@terdon I meant what the .desktop files execute. NOT where they're installed to. But again postinst can be malicious sometimes

@ThomasW. Ah, could they be dangerous without the .deb itself installing something for them to execute? xdg-open URL perhaps.

I don't see one day anywhere in here "The man left Liberia Sept. 19 and arrived in the USA the next day but had no symptoms when leaving Africa or arriving here, said Thomas Frieden, the CDC director. The patient became sick Sept. 24, and he sought care two days later. He was sent home but returned to a hospital and was admitted Sept. 28. Frieden did not reveal the man's nationality but said he came to the USA to visit relatives."

bleh, where is @ThomasW. when you need him :P

He's off killing something with fire

> The man left Liberia Sept. 19 and arrived in the USA the next day
I should have read that better though, I missed the place where it countered my argument. If it took that long to show symptoms, the incubation period couldn't have been so long.
Dunno, when I had looked it up in preparation to a canceled trip to Angola, that's one of the things I'd read.

2:14 AM
19-24 was supposedly incubation. 24 to 26 or 26 to 28 contagious.

@terdon Thats usually true, but most outbreaks were in remote areas

@hbdgaf OK, in that case, I was right. If he only had 2 days of being contagious before the symptoms were heavy enough to land him in hospital, that's not a very dangerous bug in terms of spreading.
Compared it to, say, the flu which keeps you asymptomatic and contagious for at least a week.

comparatively speaking it would spread slower... but your organs don't turn to jello with the flu.

With a >90% mortality rate, not many victims will survive long enough to be a serious public hazard. That's the irony, it's precisely the most horrible thing about this virus that is also making it less dangerous than it might have been.
@hbdgaf Nope, I'd rather have the flu thank you very much.

2:29 AM
You can die of the flu too

Yes you can, but liquified organs vs coughing, sneezing, and generally feeling horrible? I'll choose no liquified organs thanks.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, but I'll take my chances.

2:47 AM
Nothing is going to happen, guys.

@Whaaaaaat: Thats what they will say!

@Seth hiding behind you with a shotgun.

@ThomasW. :O
Got a minute to answer another packaging question or two?

@Seth sure, but i don't have long... the fiancee needs snugs as she falls asleep. :)

first question: I accidentally found this bug on LP: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-packaging-guide/+bug/1313053 Since it doesn't seem to be fixed, is there some extra step I should be aware of that the packaging guide misses for uploading to launchpad?
Or should I just ignore it?

3:27 AM
recomm.: #54

heh
@Whaaaaaat we also patched the bash bug... right?

@hbdgaf Did we?
I was too busy patching Skyrim

idk, it has been patched a half dozen times so far and has no less than 4 cves
@Lucio nice

@Seth are you using bzr dh-make?
(sorry for late response, had something to finish)

sup LoT

3:37 AM
@Seth or are you using bzr builddeb?
if you're using neither its not relevant then
@hbdgaf not much

I finally made it home.
You know you're in trouble when the train station's platform looks like that.

well that's good. i remember having trouble finding a spot on the train

A switch broke and they weren't able to run any trains past it.
Thankfully they have two lines running.
This is a picture of the other line.

sometimes you just need a bigger hammer to fix the problem

It doubled the time of my trip home. But those things happen.

3:42 AM
in other news, my boss showed up at my door and i answered in my underpants... so it's not all not hilarious

Okay... you win.

i was looking for the carlos mencia whole nother level soundbyte, but i lossed
@Lucio I rather prefer this one openbsd.org/songs/songsh.mp3

3:59 AM
@NathanOsman I see no penguin. You weren't there.

@Whaaaaaat it wasn't a selfie... wait, let him take a selfie

sigh
I'll just photoshop it.
OH COME ON OSMAN.

4:21 AM
One crappy photoshop coming right up:

^^ what no waldo shirt and hat?

You think I'm that good?!?!

i was kinda hoping

here. with hat.
i can not do the shirt.
not to mention scaling.

4:38 AM
Slow clap.

Is that a "nice fail" clap, or a "okay work" clap?
because my photoshopping does not earn a "good job" clap.

That's an "I take my hat off to you, sir" clap.

@NathanOsman Your black terminal with the black penguin fluff was a challenge.

that's why the dimensions are off.
I used your avatar, but I don't think I even came close.
WHAT. I CAN RESIZE AVATARS???!?
DAMMIT.

4:41 AM
Just change the s parameter.

I just realized that.
/me is very stupid
Guy in red circle: "Why the hell does he have a stuffed penguin with a badly-scaled Waldo hat?"

Eh, can an 'experienced' Linux user look at what this post is suggesting to improved system performance. I don't know how that could work!?

Am highly skeptical after reading that.

Taz D.I am trying to attach the code given for my AskUbuntu flair or the other one, the combined Stack Exchange flair, at the end of my emails just for show-off but it doesn't work. Hey guys
i am trying to unmet some dependencies but not quite sure what to do
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
openjdk-7-jre : Depends: openjdk-7-jre-headless (= 7u3-2.1.7-1) but 7u51-2.4.4-0ubuntu0.13.04.2 is to be installed

Hey guys, yum update bash is not fixing shellshock issue for CENTOS 5.8 i686. what should I need to do update the latest version of bash(current version is : bash-3.2-32.el5_9.1)

@gowri Go to Unix and Linux and ask about it
@gowri this is Ask Ubuntu after all.
(not Ask CentOS)

@ThomasW. I'm using bzr dh-make, bzr commit, bzr builddeb.
(in that order)

@Seth Then yes it does affect you. Why in god's name would you use such evil

Because the packaging guide does it that way?

@ThomasW : okay sorry

1:20 PM
I'm just feeling my way around all this right now, no idea what is a good idea or what is not ;)

@Seth I'm oldschool, I work off of git repos and then build the packages by hand
but i'm odd :P
(debdiffs ftw)
@Seth I'd refer to #ubuntu-motu and #ubuntu-packaging then
@Seth it's likely those bugs DO affect you
(for PPAs, UDD method isn't the only method)

I didn't get an answer in #ubuntu-packaging :/
Perhaps a bad time.

did you see the other channel i suggested

yeah, I did.

mention nobody's responding in -packaging and they might help

1:21 PM
okay.

@Seth bet they are all busy on touch and also 14.10

It's possible :)

@Seth that's most likely, i'd wait until after final release
since they're in "Get it done" mode

hm, ok.
Thanks for the help! I've got to go get things done myself now ;)

Q: unable to boot ahter instalation : freeBSD

munjal007I have ubuntu installed in my system. I just installed freeBSD 10.0 in to my system. Here is the screenshot of GParted. Where /dev/sda1 is where my ubuntu is installed , and /dev/sda2 is where I install freeBSD. Installation of freeBSD is clean. But when I restart the system , all the time...

that theme looks pretty nice @RPi.
What icon theme are you using?

@Seth Moka

hm ok. I keep thinking I will try a new icon set, but I never actually do ;P

I tried using Numix Circle and really liked it, but it screwed with my system and when I changed it back to Moka it screwed up my X-server configs and stuff
Soo....I've been kinda scurred to mess w. it again :D
@Seth Yeah, Numix Circle and Moka are really great icon sets
Sigh
Having a computer than can handle 3/5 tabs in Firefox w.out lagging out is sooooo amazing

7:35 PM
@hbdgaf @Seth Question for the far smarter! I'm trying to mount an NTFS partition in the Xubuntu installer. However, it says that it needs the packages ntfsprogs / ntfs-3g
ntfs-3g is already installed, but ntfsprogs isn't available.
:P
Halp

hm, I think they replaced renamed those

Q: How do I install ntfs-3g (ntfsprogs) manually on Ubuntu?

RavinduLRecently I wanted to fix one of my SATA Hard Disks that had a damaged NTFS file system. For this, I referred to this question: Ubuntu 13.04 is unable to mount a disk drive from ex-windows system in which a tool called ntfsprogs is installed in Ubuntu. As I did not encounter the package ntfsprog...

@RPiAwesomeness so what tool are you using, the disk manager?

@Mateo Well, I was attempting to install Xubuntu, so the Xubuntu installer, and also Gparted
Wonder why Xubuntu hasn't been updated...
The installer is 14.04.1 LTS, and that change was introduced in 13.04
...

might be a gparted thing...

Might...
@Mateo How would I find the device to mount it manually?

try using gnome-disk-utility

7:44 PM
@Mateo Never mind :P

found something? or did you hibernate windows ;)

@Mateo I got it. :)

cool

Yeah. My mom + siblings are cool w. me installing Linux, so Xubuntu 14.04.1 LTS is going on!

so, sounds like you got your computer together, how is it?

7:45 PM
@Mateo lol, no
I still only have Mobo, RAM, and PSU
Operation: Linux Convert is a go

aw, just a few more parts!

@Mateo Yeah, CPU, GPU, storage, case
Almost halfway

my sister is using it on her desktop and netbook, the desktop cost 200 to put together, back when celeron processors were $40

Xubuntu?

unity 2d on 12.04

7:48 PM
Oh, lol

but yeah, it is going to another desktop next update

Time to run my first real backup!
@Mateo Should I password protect my backup?

backup?

;)

7:52 PM
Well dangit. Winks. So not helpful

I'm going commando on backups.

Bother you GParted!
Won't let me resize an NTFS partition. Gah

bet there is data written at the end

@Mateo Well, screw you Windows
Installs Xubuntu over top of Windows 7
I am so tempted to do so...

P..
@terdon
regarding the question I asked yesterday I included the script
Can you help me?

7:56 PM
@RPiAwesomeness go back in windows and look at the disk, check to see if it says "dynamic" do a defragment, and see where the files are on the disk layout, if there are immovable files only at the end of the disk, you can turn off virtural ram to free that up

@Mateo Thanks, doing so now...

and maybe do a chkdsk

Maybe
Trying to decide whether to grab everything of my WinXP partition and wipe my PC and reinstall Ubuntu using the full 100GB....

oh, and does it have fast boot or something or was that just win 8

oogh. Decisions
@Mateo Nope, it's Win 7
I just had a sneaky idea...

7:58 PM
didn't remember when they started that

I think I may have figured out how to use an OEM installation of Windows on a different PC, or does it detect hardware?

on laptops it is built into the bios

So, I couldn't create a backup of one system and restore it to my new PC?

and detects hardware changes

7:59 PM
@RPiAwesomeness nope

Microsoft is actually smart about something.

and you can only activate a certain number of times before it auto deny any you have to call them for the same pc
@RPiAwesomeness well.... it makes it a pain to trouble shoot and backup and manage your system in general

Waiting...waiting...400+ MB of updates take a long time to download on my internet
I wants installs Steam!

well, enough about windows. I'm going to play games on steam on ubuntu ;)

@Mateo Exactly what I want to do!
But I have to install 2 months worth of updates first :P
Gah.
PCPartPicker why u no work?

Q: Listing nameservers in Ubuntu 14.04 without NetworkManager

benfIn Ubunutu 14.04, I want to list the nameservers the machine is using. Normally I would use nm-tool to list them, but it appears NetworkManager doesn't run when no user is logged in via the GUI, and I want to do this in an SSH session. I can't cat /etc/resolv.conf, since all it provides is names...

@Mateo What do you mean by looking to see if it says "dynamic"?
I'm in the Computer Management window w. the Disk Management thingy open, and I see nada...

Grrrr...

under the disk, does it say "dynamic"

Nope, they're all Basic

8:07 PM
don't change it or anything
@RPiAwesomeness that is good

Defraggler ahoy!

@Mateo I'll try and post a screenie from Defraggler of my drive...
@Mateo Do you use PCPartPicker at all?

looked at it a bit

Wow...the bass on these Approaching Nirvana songs is pretty dang crazy
Listening on a PC is quite a bit different that listening on an iPod Nano
@Mateo ^^

8:17 PM
use the system one...

Get your issue solved @RPiAwesomeness? I was at lunch.

@Seth Depends on which issue you're wondering about :)

@RPiAwesomeness programs -> acceories -> system tools -> disk defragmentor

@RPiAwesomeness NTFS ;)

@Seth Sorta, @Mateo and I are messing w. defrag and crap :P
#WindowsCrap

8:22 PM
ah, well, you may proceed ;)

:P
@Mateo I know.
I opened up the system one and it just says it's 0% fragmented

did it give you a map
like blue lines

@Mateo Nope

should look like this:
unless they changed it...

that's all I have

8:25 PM
hit the analyze button and see what it gives you

I have...it does nothing

ah man, you have 4 primary partitions...

Yeah...

:(

Wonder if I should just wipe Windows and install Xubuntu...

8:26 PM
because you can't make another primary partition

:P
Well, I've got a backup for Windows...I think I'm just gonna wipe it and restore files to the Xubuntu installation!
Just gotta check w. mother...not technically my PC

well, I would leave the recovery just in case

@Mateo Recovery Partition?

@RPiAwesomeness yeah, that will restore without tripping the activation alarm

8:28 PM
as long as the hardware doesn't change...

@Mateo Shouldn't. I know I won't be upgrading it
If I spend any money upgrading laptops it'll be my own w. a new battery & more RAM...
I think I can technically have 8GB of RAM in this laptop...
dangit.
dangit.dangit.dangit.dangit.dangit.
Just unplugged my backup HDD by accident :P
okay, laptop can have a max of 4GB of RAM...

@RPiAwesomeness the error message might not have been updated, but on 14.04 it is called ntfs-3g and it does work.

I know, that's the odd thing
@Mateo When you say without tripping the activation alarm, do you mean that I'll just have to re-activate the PC after restoration?

8:44 PM
not if it is from the recovery drive, and it is the type that has the thing in the bios, it's too complicated...
so, it might just decide to make you reactivate anyway...

Boo on 4 primary partitions... Just save a copy of the partition table before you do anything. Then split the primary partition "for windows". Generally you don't want to mess with system, recovery, and hp tools. if you do, loading in to those partitions can get to be a problem - BIOS is finicky that way sometimes.

@hbdgaf That's what I was planning on doing. However, I apparently can't resize the main Windows partition ?!??

You also have to change one of the "no don't touch these three" to be extended/logical instead of primary
I use acronis live cd for that type of thing en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronis_Rescue_Media

Hey! Where'd my auto-comment addon go?

8:48 PM
acronis and paragon disk utilities are the new hotness that partition magic used to be.

Okay...why is AutoReviewComments screwed up for me?
Huh, first time I've ever voted to close an OT because bug question on RPi.SE
Yay! Updates downloaded!
Now to install 344MB of updates
