12:35 AM
@NathanOsman Your tuto doesn't mention what to do after edit a Model. It just mention the commands for the first time.

You mean when you add something to the model?

@NathanOsman right
Add/Remove/Edit

Maybe that will be part of Part 5 :)

hehehe

In the meantime, I can tell you how to do it.

12:41 AM
:O

That looks exactly like my webcam.
O_o

And the glasses looks like, your glasses!
Here comes a burst of funny pics recently found:

What to do after you change the model varies GREATLY from django version to django version. It's my understanding than in django latest, south-like functionality for migration is a built-in not a bolt-on

you've ruined my burst..

you should only have two left for a burst to finish...
one now...

12:49 AM
it is ended now :)
@hbdgaf I have the latest one

from repo or from git? from git south is built-in
i guess i played an interrupt...

django? 1.6.1

beta is at 1.7 from git

I am an stable guy :)

Wait.

12:52 AM
waits

Isn't 1.7 the latest beta release and dev. is on 1.8 now?

afaik yes
the django release model breaks my mind. how can something be in beta/non-stable state and still not be dev branch?

It was confusing to me too.
It's kind of like Chrome.
They have a stable channel, a beta channel, and a "nightly" channel.

xD

so there's stable, awesomesauce but buggy and needs work, and where the work is going on ;)
<.<

12:55 AM
That should be the title.
so
@NathanOsman what can I do?

everyone: downvote this, and flag it: askubuntu.com/a/403681/10616
it's a random downloadsite link to some random tarball
and that's all it says in the answer.

> You have already flagged this post for moderator attention
I thought it was going to be history soon.

""

@Braiam you are starting to worry me :/

@Lucio it still shows on the 10K_tools window

1:00 AM
what is that?

mods has to handle the flag, or 20ker vote to remove
more or less..

but I'm not there

start working ;)

@Braiam flags/edits/reviews don't get you to 10K

err... I was talking about answering questions but ok...

1:07 AM
@ThomasW. oh lord. might as well just ask for rootkits.

@hbdgaf my point exactly. flag it as spam

Guys!
Kill it with fire: askubuntu.com/q/403704/62483

i need to make a better music player. one that lives on my desktop background with clickables.... i shouldn't need a window to have seekable background noise...

@hbdgaf what a great idea!!!
Stolen. :P

it's the things that awesomesauce is made from. pure unicorn rainbow shit.

1:11 AM
lol
IIRC one of the addons for foobar did that pretty well

@JourneymanGeek might have. i've only played around with amarok, gmusicbrowser, and rythmbox... if it's not the default, it's probably not worth it yet...

Did I used the CC ok here?

Yes.

1:12 AM
\o/ :D

Used it well. I might have used ^^ though

Right, I'm used to ^ but CC makes me like a native English.

;) no it doesn't. My coworkers laughed at me for using the phrase blind-carbon-copy in verbal conversation.

lol <-- English native

i'm gonna stop. i have work to do anyway...

1:16 AM
Last one..
Do you know what makes you an english native:

I have a question for you all.

:(

since mod elections might be coming up, should I consider nominating myself?
like, do you think i'd even get any votes

This is radioshack, you have questions we have answers
fwiw - I'ld vote your way.

What the heck!!
@ThomasW. you'll get mine :)

1:17 AM
shift+enter bro... shift+enter

I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for the elections announcement

this

enters foxhole

@hbdgaf you just made me found a never used before feature
Press SHIFT+ ARROWSsssssssss up and down..

1:20 AM
it happens... use it sparingly
@Lucio on your database migration thing earlier, i don't like doing auto-migrations because i want to populate the empty fields that i add manually for each record. it's just my cdo.

@hbdgaf your foxhole is no match for the Internet Ballistic Missiles (IBMs)!

how the hell do you run a command at GUI logout?
is there a dbus event? How is Joe Average Ubuntu user supposed to figure it out?

@Gilles just at logout or generally shutdown?

Q: Script Execution at user logout (non root user)

geo909I am in my university labs running ubuntu 12.10 with unity and I don't have root privilleges. I need to run a script at logout. Is this possible? Note: this is probably a duplicate of this question, however the answers given are quite cryptic and no specific directions are given.

and for those who don't use Unity:

Q: How can I run a script during GNOME logout if I don't have admin privileges?

missingnoI want to run a script before I log out of my GNOME session, to warn myself if I have forgotten a pendrive plugged into the machine. However, all solutions I have found have not been enough for me: This similar question suggests editing the /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default file, but I don't have t...

1:28 AM
@hbdgaf and what would you do?

script it manually.

@hbdgaf X11 logout. Without root access.

without root access at runtime or at implementation time?

@hbdgaf you can request that root installs a package, but that's all

Add it to a service init script or add some random application with no gui presence that has a cleanup routing that does it for you ftp.gnu.org/old-gnu/Manuals/glibc-2.2.3/html_chapter/…

1:32 AM
@hbdgaf how do you “add to a service init script” without root access?
@hbdgaf I'm talking about a GUI session

you said "at install time" was in bounds

@hbdgaf only that if you want to use an Ubuntu package that isn't installed by default, it's ok
because most admins will consent to that
no admin will let you add arbitrary system jobs (or else they'll give you root access in the first place)

it just means there should be a package that exists already, but doesn't, for logoff jobs
like cuttlefish did for handling usb events. it so should have existed already.

maybe write your own custom logout script? ;p

@JourneymanGeek the question is where to put it

1:37 AM
could do that too, but it wouldn't apply to all users...

@Gilles: or write something that replaces the current log off script

@JourneymanGeek which is?

cause I do suspect that the log off procedure is a wrapper
I need to dig, I don't have any graphical linux systems running at the moment

@hbdgaf what do you mean all users? The question is about doing something on one account, it shouldn't affect other users (and won't, since we have no root access, anyway)

1:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek no, that's a text session logout

Q: Create a logoff script/task for Linux

warrenIn similar vein to my question for Windows and Mac OS X, how would one go about creating a logoff script for Linux? Any distro is fine, as I'm sure it'd be extendable across others. I'm most familiar with RHEL/CentOS/Fedora and Ubuntu, though. addition If this exists for both a graphical login...

I know how to use the command line, thank you very much

@Gilles: searching is iterative
;p

lol

@Gilles sorry, i wasn't looking at it in the context of the question. i was thinking of how i would use it.

1:39 AM
@JourneymanGeek none of the answers apply here
reminder: no root access, GUI session (Unity or Gnome)

evidently our spammer needs a little youtube.com/…

@Braiam I'd seen that but the answer doesn't actually answer the question

There is the other room although most don't have access I think you do @RPiAwesomeness

hmmm, the comment might
If you can confirm it works and explain how to use it, you'll get at least 110rep on Unix & Linux

@Mateo Depends on the room. I had access to the (S)pam thingy and the one before that. Been fighting this right alongside yall.
Watching the Hobbit Numero Uno right now :D Good movie. Like the second better though

1:55 AM
Haven't seen the second yet, almost want to wait for the third to avoid another cliffhanger

@Mateo If you hate cliffhangers and thought the first was bad, DO NOT see the second. Believe me, it's worse...

:)

@Mateo Would you like a spoiler?

nope... Someone dies - the butler did it.

Well, Brask is on a rampage. What is it with users doing that?
First Braiam, no Brask...

2:06 AM
this askubuntu.com/questions/403586/… was not a dupe.op asks for how do i find the Ubuntu on dvd is 32 bit or 64 bit?

@Mateo Did you see the now-deleted spoiler?

@RPiAwesomeness You should pay more attention to the way you flag questions. In particular, when you flag duplicates I have noticed that you sometimes link to the wrong duplicate. When you're flagging a question, the flag should also help the OP to find an answer to his question.

@AvinashRaj Never hurts to ask the little questions like that. Amazing how many are caused by something like that. The OP didn't mention that in his question.
@karel Really? Sorry, could you give me some examples and what it should have been? I don't want to give bad flags :(
Eg. What I said the dupe was and what it should be?

2:36 AM
@RPiAwesomeness Sorry, I don't remember. It happened about two weeks ago, and I noticed a string of about five consecutive flags with bad links in the review queue. I'll tell you next time I see one. It can sometimes take quite a while to find the right duplicate to a question when you're flagging it.

@karel Thanks! I don't want to flag badly...

3:04 AM
@RPiAwesomeness remember, if you are not sure, you can bring it to chat

@Braiam Yes. Will remember that :)

3:44 AM
Why are we trying to reason with idiots?

You mean my letter?

Yeah, why waste time

I needed to get that off my chest.
And besides, you never know if it might deter others.
(I doubt we're going to get through to this guy.)

It's not going to deter anyone, we're dealing with a troll. You can't reason with them, all attempts to reason with them only result in fueling them

is the the guy who wants to be a mod?

3:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek yes

@JourneymanGeek The one and only.

just keep whacking his questions and answers ;p

We're doing that, and with vengeance too.

don't keep eye contact. Just walk away, and press down on the big red kill button ;p
Laugh maniacally.

3:50 AM
I fear your meta question may fuel them to continue :\

Seriously?

"Oh, we're really annoying them, they made an open letter, lets keep going until they crack"

these people want attention
you're giving it to them

When I once was a troll, and I read that, I would juts be wetting myself with joy

3:52 AM
I purposely tried to word it in such a way that I wasn't giving them anything to gloat over.
I tried to avoid indications that we were getting tired of what they were doing.
I also tried to make it clear that it was a losing battle on their part and they could save everybody's time by quitting.

You're addressing them, doesn't matter how you word it. Once you acknowledge them it's a victory

I mean we aren't going to make them mods even if they find an exploit in Windows Server, gain access to the production DB, and manually assign the permission to themselves.

Right, it's just a matter of how much longer until they get bored and go away
When you write an open letter it's like a "we're not afraid, come at me bro" sentiment, regardless of the wording

I didn't intend it to come across that way.

doesn't matter the tone or the content of the message, the fact it exists is enough

3:55 AM
All I wanted to say was "are you guys really expecting worse and worse behavior to be rewarded? srsly?"

Again, people are literally trollling. Logic left the second they started

Well, that being said - I doubt they even know Meta exists :P

No, they don't think they're going to be a mod, they simply want to become as much of a problem as possible for the site
5 hours ago, by Nathan Osman
Request: please continue to flag "MOD" spam and please post a link to this question as a comment.
They do now :)

Yes, but our research so far has suggested that they don't even read comments to their own posts after they are made.
At least not some of the later ones.

Anyways, if we could just stop engaging with them, flag the posts, and move on that'd be greatttt

3:57 AM
Fair enough. I will continue to flag.
And I will try to keep silent.

<3
If it is getting to you, just step away for awhile. It's seriously not worth it

Trust me, what I said in comments to their posts (which is nothing - I never commented) was not what I wanted to say.
@MarcoCeppi I'm sure we both agree that this distracts from time spent answering questions on the site.

@NathanOsman Has the spam started again?

No.
The last one was a veiled threat about DDoS-ing the site from a botnet.

Oh.

4:09 AM
So, the "make me mod"s are back?

In the immortal words of Nick Craver:

Nick Craver Hope your server can handle it Bring it.

@NathanOsman But they read the chat

I can't believe my NAA flag here was disputed... whatever.

@AmithKK They do?
Alright, everyone put on their tin hats and we'll stealthily switch to our protected chat room. Stand by.
@AmithKK: Check hangouts.
@Seth: not sure if you'll receive a popup or not... but you were added to a certain "room".
Oh hey - I can just paste the link here: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/12386
It doesn't give away the title or anything.

4:48 AM
@NathanOsman So it did start again?

Darn spam.
Just finished watching the Hobbit: Unexpected Journey :D Good movie
Last 5 minutes of the movie in 20 words: Orcs! Eagles! Our home. Pretty birdies! Oo! A snail! Knock Knock Echoes Dragon nose fart. Eek! Evil dragon eye! Muzik!

@RolandiXor it's not zoomed out far enough to see the bucket...

@hbdgaf who is all going?

@Lucio wait what?
I was going for the drop in a bucket reference...

forget..
just asking what was you doing
(bored)

lots of things. waiting on my scheduled task db job to finish so i can see if it worked.

@hbdgaf what platform? MS, Psql..

@Lucio what's up - what's going on - etc is how to say that

@hbdgaf got it

6:24 AM
@Lucio linux, but sqlite for testing so i can just nuke a file to start over. i populate it all from static local files for testing. it will be postgres when actually deployed ... probably ...
i wouldn't use mssql if you paid me to do so
sorry stackexchange

@hbdgaf even if paid?

well, it would have to be a substantial amount ;)

The first time I hear that from a developer.
Oh, ok then :P
hehe

also, check the star wall. the mso link there is epic. i starred it for a reason

I already read that post

i was all - SE mods just went "BEAST MODE ACTIVATED"

i commented there to, but yes. i like the attitude

yeah, I saw that one
You know, your user name is hard to search.

that might be on purpose...

I know, I know
You use Tor so I expected that :)

6:32 AM
i don't use it consistently.

No one does ;)

if i really cared i would use tails or something...but i don't.

yep
a live edition is the way to go

no idea. it's an effort reward ratio. i just don't do enough things that require it to need to use something like that.

@hbdgaf I know that you hear music, so I guess that this song will like you youtube.com/watch?v=Adgx9wt63NY

6:37 AM
@Lucio i've heard that song before and liked it at the time though

right

Yeah, he made some songs that got featured in previous versions. The "in frame featuring" is just branding now.

There is a really dynamic business around YT.
Vevo, LLC (stylized vevo) is a video hosting service owned and operated by a joint venture of: Universal Music Group (UMG), Google, Sony Music Entertainment (SME) and Abu Dhabi Media (ADM). EMI Records licensed its content to the service before being purchased by UMG in 2012. It was launched on December 8, 2009. The videos on Vevo are syndicated across the web, with Google and Vevo sharing the advertising revenue. Vevo offers music videos from two of the "big three" major record labels, UMG and SME. Warner Music Group was initially reported to be considering hosting its content on the se...
I don't get this.. ^

example: youtube.com/watch?v=dFs6cIxuMH4 i guess they found that youtube hits for the trailer were ridiculous and they needed to commoditize
it's even the same franchise
@Lucio vevo is just a way to say - higher resolution playlists that don't show up as readily in search

I don't know what about downloads and so on..
anyway
too late here
cya!

@hbdgaf good luck with your cron job

@guntbert I agree with your idea about cleaning up comments but since I'm not actually totally sure I'm right, I've removed my first comment as well as the others and replaced it with a new one that expresses my newfound uncertainty.

@EliahKagan, looks good, the warning is still there :-)

@Braiam Hi.

11:53 AM
@EliahKagan I was installing Xubuntu for some guy, and the USC apparently froze. I minimized it to see what was the matter and guess what? - it's the MS Core Fonts EULA.

@karel Was there a way, in the Software Center itself, to enable the installation to continue (for example, to accept the EULA)? If not, I recommend reporting this as a bug.

1:27 PM
@EliahKagan The problem was that this guy had a 17" low-rez screen and the USC was blocking the MS EULA window which was underneath it. The USC was running and it was just waiting for me to click to accept the EULA so it could continue. No bug, just more MS kerfluffle.

@RPiAwesomeness As bad as XP is, it's only going to get worse when the support period ends on April 8.

Well, XP is better than Vista and 95/ME
I have XP Pro, and I can't afford to upgrade. Then again, I don't even know if my system could upgrade :D

@karel the EULA should get focus and be on-top the USC... not a bug, but a expected feature

@Braiam OK, so I was sitting in front of the screen waiting and after 10 minutes I gave up and minimized the USC and saw the EULA. I have learned not to expect too much from Microsoft.

1:40 PM
@karel What was the resolution? I'd say that if it was 600 pixels tall or more, then this is actually a bug. My understanding is that Ubuntu developers try to support small widescreen resolutions--where there would be a problem whenever there's a problem on an old low-res monitor of the same vertical res--at least in the minimal sense of ensuring that it is possible to use the system at that resolution (so: all the important apps that could work at it should).
For example bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/727905 is considered a real bug.
@Braiam The foregrounding issue may not be a bug, but if it actually doesn't fit on the screen, I think that probably is.

@EliahKagan OK, maybe it IS a bug. I've been f**ked over by MS so many times, that it didn't even occur to me to report it as a bug.

Blech. MS

@karel Well atually, Microsoft really has nothing to do with the problem here. They created the EULA, but they did not create any part of the interface that's displaying it. For the same reason, this is totally fixable by the Ubuntu project, since fixing it only requires changing something about the way [n]curses interfaces called from installation scripts are displayed by USC.

Q: Does my VM need to be on the same LAN IP rang to ping?

oshirowanenI have a home LAN where all internal IP addresses are in the rang 192.169.0.0-254. However, on one of those computers I have setup a CentOS VM, which currently seems to be set to 10.0.2.1. So the VM can ping the host (192.169.0.1), but the host can't ping the VM (10.0.2.1). Why is that? Does ...

@RPiAwesomeness I really believe that Lubuntu 13.10 is better than Windows XP. And it will run on the same hardware.

1:45 PM
oh definitely

@EliahKagan I'm saying that USC should always put debconf window on-top, if it doesn't then we got a problem. Gnome/mutter has a feature that child window always open on-top of the parent one, Unity should have that too somewhere

@Braiam When you say on top, are you talking about which window has focus, or about which window is vertically at the top of the screen? My understanding is that part of the problem in this situation is that not enough of the interface shown in the window would fit on the screen, at least where the window was placed.
But yes, either way, I totally agree with you. USC should give debconf windows focus as well.

@EliahKagan Actually this helps me to understand better what might have happened. The computer had on old graphics card with only 64MB built-in memory. The RAM had been upgraded to 1GB, so it was running Xubuntu alright. I think the timing between the graphics card and the CPU might have caused a delay which covered up the EULA window. Not necessarily a software bug. It could have even been an unfortuitous combination of hardware.
@EliahKagan In fact it does seem to give debconf windows focus generally - except for the EULA window.

@karel I'm not sure I understand what you mean (about CPU/GPU timing here). That doesn't sound like something that would happen. But since I don't entirely know what you mean, I could be mistaken.
Btw I might go afk for an extended time without warning. So if I don't respond (for a while), you'll know why. :)

Whoa. Long messages

1:57 PM
@EliahKagan It's a guessing game, but the computer was probably designed for 256MB RAM and a 128MB graphics card. However Xubuntu's performance with 1GB RAM is quite acceptable. Nothing wrong with the web browsing experience.

<-- remembers having had an EULA message on a debconf window only showing up in text mode on clicking on "details"
An EULA is a "won't fix" bug anyway
<-- never accepted any EULA just to get rid of that annoyance

if it was a problem with the way USC shows debconf messages it would be fixable...

do not distribute stuff needing an EULA would also be a permanent fix.
is there any use case where we really need these ugly extremely beautiful fonts?

stupid old new webpage that doesn't know how to properly set fonts?

awk '{print substr($1,5,3)}' filename in this command $1,5,3 represents what.plz someone answer me.

2:14 PM
echo "HelloWorld" | awk '{print substr($1,5,3)}'
oWo

$1 represents first column and then 5,3 represents what

man awk says: substr(s, i [, n]) Return the at most n-character substring of s starting at i. If n is omitted, use the rest of s.
it says, take from the 1st column from 5th character 3 characters

i think starting from the 5th letter return the 3 letters

Bingo! Cracker is the bad term :D
Hacker == someone who "hacks" together (creates) something
Cracker == something you eat and a bad dude that likes to get into stuff without permission.

@Falconer If you are there please ping me. :-)
