12:20 AM
@RolandiXor sorry, i'm on openbox. no joy on me needing anything related to that bug

12:44 AM
Any mods around?

at least one should be...i mean we just got 3 new ones ;)

IKR ;)

For chat?

No for AU.
Thanks anyways @GeorgeEdison :)

Wow... AirDrop is a must-have.

12:48 AM
So you started playing MW3?

ugh, that went pretty bad. Apparently I can't seem to get ubuntu 12.10 mini running on virtualbox :/

Given an infinite amount of money, Gary Bernhardt should buy out Waters Corp for the ticker on the NYSE

ok.. this is wierd. Its just sitting there :/

@JourneymanGeek ? what black screen ?

no, at the selection screen
trying 12.04 now

12:52 AM
Hi all!

going to give it 10 minutes, then try server

the black screen for me was hardware init fail...haven't seen stall at selection screen

@Alvar Hi

@AbrahamVanHelpsing: on virtualbox?

At the hospital waaiting :(

12:54 AM
Ooh, not fun.
I know all to well.

It's 01:54 in the morning btw.

@JourneymanGeek mine was on the lappie. seems logical that if you had hardware video acceleration support in vbox it could evidence similarly

Oh nice. Just what you want when you're at the hospital.

Yeah chest pain and no computer, but only phone :(

@AbrahamVanHelpsing: turned off actually
I want a text only install so I can check out an answer that involves upstart

12:58 AM
well you understand the thought process anyway.

yeah
turned off everything that might be a problem
I'll try server, else I'll dump virtualbox and just grab an old box and a spare hard drive.
Its just more work than I can be bothered to do if I can avoid it ;p

Where do feature requests go?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing: ah hah! pae/nx was turned off in the VM software

only a matter of time before toasters require x64 hardware virtualization i guess

does anyone here have extensive experience with mdadm?

1:12 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing: annoyingly, I can't get VT-X to work at the moment

@0xC0000022L just post the question. someone will answer it or they won't
@JourneymanGeek sorry

don't really need it
I quite literally just need a bare minimum VM I can afford to trash ;p

I stopped a RAID1 (only one drive left: sdc3) to which I had just added a spare (sdd3)
then I started it anew ... and it gives me
# mdadm --assemble /dev/md0
mdadm: ignoring /dev/sdc3 as it reports /dev/sdd3 as failed
mdadm: /dev/md0 assembled from 0 drives and 1 spare - not enough to start the array.
no idea why it would claim sdc3 is failed

thanks, reading

1:17 AM
Is there a mod around?

wow, scary ...
# mdadm -Q -D /dev/sdc3
mdadm: /dev/sdc3 does not appear to be an md device

Q: Will running Cinnamon on 12.04 slow down ubuntu?

KameromI really like the Cinnamon interface ( already know how to get cinnamon on Ubuntu) Just need to know if it will slow down my computer. I use Unity on 12.04 Ubuntu As requested here are my computer specs: i5 2500k 8gb of ram nvidia 7800 gtx

No, it won't.

@RolandiXor Can you remove the tag from that?
@RolandiXor >_>

1:18 AM
@RolandiXor: gotta do it right

@Seth lol

@RolandiXor The tag won't die unless its gone.

Done :D

Thank you.

1:20 AM
I've an exam in half an hour. Wish me luck ^.^

@AbrahamVanHelpsing: thanks, the following command looks promising for the situation ... let me try it :)
# mdadm --create /dev/md0 --assume-clean -l 1 -n 2 -e 0 /dev/sdc3 missing
mdadm: /dev/sdc3 appears to contain an ext2fs file system
size=314556352K mtime=Thu Feb 21 00:47:55 2013
mdadm: /dev/sdc3 appears to be part of a raid array:
level=raid1 devices=1 ctime=Wed Feb 20 23:30:08 2013
Continue creating array?
good luck ;)

if you don't have a backup don't do eeet

lol
:)
I do have backups, but it's still open-heart surgery

Another for you @RolandiXor

Q: When I'm on the desktop and I type anything a small window opens. What is it?

Christian Rivera Possible Duplicate: What is the text box on the desktop for? When I'm on the desktop of Ubuntu, I type something and it appears in a small window in the lower right corner of the screen. What is that and how does it work?

the machine is servicing
lovely, it worked
thanks for the pointer
it's synchronizing now

1:23 AM
@Seth: thats more than one use of the desktop tag ;p

Yes it is.
That's why we're killing it.
(mainly)

@0xC0000022L awesomesauce. if it actually fully works, consider filing a bug against mdadm if the problem was disk order changing. seems like that's what confuses the jesus out of things

Done

actually the order didn't change at all

Thanks.

1:24 AM
don't know what caused it to fail once I stopped and ran it again
but --assume-clean seems to be the medication to many an mdadm problem :)

@0xC0000022L :/ it has to rebuild or fail faster than this crappy drobo we have at work. it has been rebuilding for a week.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing: this one's only ~300 GiB

@Seth np

\o/

woot woot

1:30 AM
/me subscribes

any time you see it, flag it

flag it?

yeah
you can give a custom reason

Okay, well why would that help?

Because it would point out to the mods that the tag still exists :)

1:35 AM
Okay... shrug

Or am I not making sense... :P

I promised joker I'd post a meta.

oh ok

@RolandiXor Not quite. I can't see how the mods could help... other than retagging.

Voted for you as mod, but I strongly disagree with your assertion 3h ago, @RolandiXor ... this one "Instead of focusing on phones and tablets and making us wait two years, FIX THE BUGS IN THE DESKTOP VERSION ALREADY." ... I think they are doing a good job already. And not all devs contributing to Ubuntu receive payment ... how do you think they think about it.

1:36 AM
@0xC0000022L lol you don't have to agree with someone to vote for them

Just sayin'. That has nothing to do with being a mod.

Also, being frustrated with something does not disqualify me from being a mod :)

it doesn't, true
but your comment insinuates they aren't fixing, which is IMO unfair given the contrary evidence ... also just sayin'

BTW, in that statement I was actually partly joking

didn't come across as such, sorry ;)

1:39 AM
Which is something we do on this chat a lot - we make serious statements which are part funning around :)

horrible ... funny mods :-D

I do think that more focus needs to be put on fixing bugs but anyone who knows me knows that I'm excited about Ubuntu Phone/Tablet :)

I'm moderately excited about the idea of running it "natively" on my Nexus 7 ... instead of confined the way I have to now

I actually plan to get a Nexus 10 or 7 for that purpose :)

@RolandiXor: actually the big issue I have with canonical is they keep reinventing the wheel
(as does a certain person in fedora I btich about a lot...)

1:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek: how so?

whistles
no comments

HP tried. And lost.

@0xC0000022L: Lennert something, created pulseaudio, and is trying to replace the log system (which is text based) with a binary one
also... one of the init.d replacements
and...

oh, I see

with canonical, unity would be a good example

1:44 AM
I find upstart nice compared to the traditional SysV init, however

and the 'cellphone' unity varient is different from the desktop one
I love upstart
but it co-exists with the old init system

ah, okay ... I dislike that ... always using Kubuntu, but mostly using Debian and Ubuntu from the terminal anyway

lol
kubuntu when I use linux

Q: How should questions about SPDY be tagged?

Joe Coder GuyThis web protocal is becoming more and more popular considering its' value, but it's not in the list of tags. How should a question be tagged since this tag isn't here?

0
Q: Please add the "HipHop" tag

Joe Coder GuyFacebook's virtual machine is rapidly becoming more popular considering how much faster it can make a cheap VPS. Ubuntu is the easiest (for me) distro to install this on. Please add it.

Anybody with 2 cents to see those 2 questions.

Still thinking up my answer

1:46 AM
protocol is mispelled >_>

lol
which one?

My thought is that it will make an excuse to create many MANY tags that will actually create more problems with the tag issues.

added my two cents to the first one
:-Þ

@LuisAlvarado You only create tags when the appropriate question is asked.

what @Seth said

1:50 AM
@RolandiXor: the first one

@JourneymanGeek oh I see now

@LuisAlvarado: the first one is not really necessary - it would probably always be part of a webserver or browser question

I misread your message earlier for some reason

the second one, maybe, its a standalone software

@Seth yes, but leaving tags like that, at least for me in the open, it opens many other tags to use that are not actually Ubuntu related but more related to other SE sites. Not only that but if a SPDY, AJAX, HTML5.. or any of them are allowed, think of how many protocols, services Firefox has, or Chrome, Opera or any other browser.

My thinking is that they are better placed in an existing, more general tag like browser, server, webserver like mentioned above. I mean something general that covers small cases like those.

1:53 AM
@LuisAlvarado I'm writing an answer...

@Seth you go boy!! Get em!!

lol

I wonder if we should give Seth a biscuit when he is done...

I agree with Luis, simply on the basis that tags aren't supposed to spell out the question in all detail but to categorize it ... adding more categories will make finding things harder, not easier as long as each category is a "binge category"

Yes, I could not have said it better. Categorize it. Thanks ....??? 22L Virus?

1:56 AM
huh? virus?
if you're wondering about the username, it's an allude to my favorite native error code on the NT platform ;) ... also, people didn't like to have to spell out STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED all the time

got it
so virus it is
^^
or why not instead of STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED i could just say SAD
like in the phrase "Hey SAD is here"... "He is SAD" ^^

lol
actually some did that, it was sad to see that ;)

so how are those mod badges working for you folks? ... I assume this is already the new term, since some of you weren't mods before on askubuntu.com

there's a badge for that?
well 5 minutes after becoming a mod... I hate being a mod.. how about that

2:04 AM
well, I mean the diamond-shaped thingamy behind the names ;)

@LuisAlvarado Do you really?
awww :(

it is kind of a badge, isn't it?

@Seth too much work
Toooooooo manyyyyyyy optionsss

isn't that why there are several mods, not to mention high-rep community members?

lol
mods have it worse apparently
high rep is pretty unobtrusive

2:09 AM
@LuisAlvarado /me loves options.

trust me, when you have this many, like, you want to close a question
it asks for your social security number, date of birth, blood type, number of girlfriends last year, etc..

It even asked me for my spleen!
I don't have a spleen!

its a bug

I'm an alien for crying out loud

it should have asked FOR YOUR SOUL

2:11 AM
I'm lucky to have organs!
@JourneymanGeek that was the first question
I tricked it with a spare soul I found in a dumpster

kids these days
back in the day we were so poor, we used to have to make our own souls out of mud.

throwing their souls in trash cans...
@JourneymanGeek exactly!

Q: Add a feature like one in Windows task manager?

chadI really like the System monitor in ubuntu but there is one feature that I am missing that is in Windows Task manager. In addition to showing the processes Windows task manager also has a tab that allows you to view open windows and to edit settings. This is more convenient than hunting for the p...

it looks open

I open it

2:14 AM
ah

I had to use a crowbar, but it opened

lol

My question opener is broken! It's not funny!

laughs

@LuisAlvarado they think this is funny D:
There.
You will all die from the cuteness.

I'll go afk while you die.

A: Please add the "HipHop" tag

SethI agree with @LuisAlvarado, but wanted to add some of my own input. Tags on SE sites are for categorizing questions. Since this site is about Ubuntu and Ubuntu only everything except installing HipHop (on a Ubuntu server) is off-topic here and belongs on Stack Overflow. Because of this a HipHo...

@LuisAlvarado actually want my signature on the certificate?
it'll mean an additional 48 hours, but hey, what's another 2 days on top of the 4 months that i've been trying to get this to you? :P
which one should be part of my company logo?
the first is on all my personal business cards already.

Q: How to browse the files on my Samsung Galaxy Discover?

George EdisonI just bought a Samsung Galaxy Discover and eagerly connected it to my Kubuntu machine via the included USB cable. After selecting the option to "Open with file manager", I was redirected to the URI camera: which consisted of a single folder: This folder is empty. After some further reading, ...

@jrg Go with this one.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison The admin?

@jrg first one.

I mean what's not to love about a plate with a fish skeleton on it?
Oh the joy of slow sf.net mirrors...

jrg
2:38 AM
was trying to find one with snow, since my companies name is snowy penguin solutions.
but the usual available clipart places don't have anything.

@GeorgeEdison We must have a KDE convert :/
:P

@Seth We sure do.

LOL
I like it... but it doesn't like me :(

jrg
well, lots of people are that way.

I didn't say they weren't...
nothing wrong with that.
Just teasing a little.

2:43 AM
No HipHop tag??? Oh, the huge manatee!

★
@RolandiXor Migration flag for ya :D

We should definitely use the tag for questions on window decorations and themes.

@maggotbrain oh man, totally

hehe

2:52 AM
ok, riddle me this: how can a google image search for "linux server" turn into highly suggestive girls next to dragons by page 3?
with safe search on.

@jrg You must have broken your googles. Mine is family friendly with safe search off. At least you weren't searching for "bsd devil" ;-P

user19161
@jrg Because girls are safe.

jrg
@maggotbrain oh man, yeah, i'm sure that one would turn weird fast.
well, there were some other restrictions - creative commons, commercial, etc.

@Seth next time you are running for mod.

user19161
Wait @rol When did you become modded?

3:00 AM
@JacobBlack Do you use the Bourne shell :P
@RolandiXor Probably not.

jrg
@Seth sadface, but someone has to keep the flags coming in. :)

user19161
@jrg I see you changed back to your old pic.

jrg
@JacobBlack yessir.

user19161
@jrg Google image search now is very safe. One needs to use explicit terms to search for explicit things. The algorithm changed recently.

@JacobBlack they took out my iron claws and replaced them with Tallium 50 talons about yesterday :)

jrg
3:03 AM
@JacobBlack interesting. wasn't more than you'd see at a pool here in the US, but still, was a shock.

user19161
@RolandiXor What is the i doing there, Apple fan?

It's a bit tougher to type, but now my nails are unbreakable!

jrg
I was expecting pictures of nicely rack mounted Dells and stuff.
instead i get dragons.

@JacobBlack in my name?

user19161
@RolandiXor Yeah I know @seth removed his i and it went into you lol

3:04 AM
haha
well, my name is pronounced Roll-land-dix-xor :)
so the i is less emphasized :P
The X is capitalized to match IceXsage :)
oh
@jokerdino !!!

@RolandiXor AH. French.

Hey. :D

HI!

@Seth O_o
not french :D
closer to a fictional language (Ta'Elan) than french :P

Oh. shrug.
@jrg yeah...

3:11 AM
@Rinzwind Thanks Rinz. I was sleeping :>

FOOD TIME FTW!!!!!

jumping in to the new 3.5 kernel on 12.04.2. I might be back. ;-)

lol. OK :)

Maggots got brain?
(just curious)

3:22 AM
The maggots have the brain, yes.

What phylum do they come under?

If y'all were curious, the name comes from an old funk song: youtube.com/watch?v=dh3bleXWaCk

Oh heh. I was more curious about maggots actually.

@jokerdino Arthropoda which seems odd.

Odd indeed.
Looks like they are classified as insects.
Insects do have brain. So, I'll let you off.

3:26 AM
well, most of the clan are spiders, bees, and lobsters such. Not sure where I fit in. ;-)

We can discuss it. ;)

That is a cool, little Atropoda. From Antarctica, no less.

Looks so beautiful.

Indeed.
There are some crazy creatures from down under: naturalsciences.be/amphi/carcimage.htm

@AmithKK I need some help from ya. You knows how to make logos?

3:41 AM
appears
@jokerdino Yeah?

Yeah :>
One sec. Getting the pdf.
Join the other room. I'll give you details.

@jrg you rang?

@maggotbrain my cat!
How did you get that picture?
@maggotbrain you're an insect - the larva of a fly
Food for some other kinds of fly larva.

@RolandiXor Moderators should not talk like that to other AU members... you !@#!#!

Q: How to make money from/in Ubuntu/Linux?

Dante AshtonI'm a student right now, and later in life I'd like to get really involved in the Linux ecosystem. However I recognize the need to put bread on the table, so my question is: How can I make money from Ubuntu/Linux? The situation right now is that my College can offer me Windows Certification, or...

How could we leave this open?

@LuisAlvarado You need some context. We were discussing about the classification of maggots.

@jokerdino xD

Community Ad?

@jokerdino so it's 2 mods vs one
BRING EM ON!!!

@RolandiXor We can probably close it as NC.

3:57 AM
WAR OF THE MODS!!!

@LuisAlvarado no. I was just giving you some context.
contextually, I don't find it offending.

@jokerdino gets hit by a flying Close Question sign
I dodge a downvote from @RolandiXor

So. What do you think? Will it help bring people to the reg room?

Not much.
I don't want too many flags. Sorry.

Go figure.
We have almost no one in there :/
