I need some help formulating what/how to ask a question regarding slow networking on localhost. I'm really at a loss for where to start. Its a stock 12.04 install, and every connection is taking upwards of 15 to 20 seconds to initiate.
example, connecting to a localhost mongo db - takes 45 seconds to recognize that its there and go. On other PC's its instant. And it doesn't end there, even ssh handshaking which normally takes circa 3 to 5 seconds is taking 30 to 45
Thats what i'm looking for, is hte magic setting thats causing the trouble. I didn't know where to start and it really seems like its too localized to be asked on the site.
I have no imperical evidence other than "it just doesnt feel as snappy as it used to be"

I tried logging in in low resolution mode (sorry if I misspelled the name) and I got a message saying "Your system is running in low-graphics mode, Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself."
