@JorgeCastro thanks for the email.
On my laptop I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04, 3 or 4 weeks ago. Recently I had trouble logging in - I'd type in my password but it would hang on the 'logging in...' message you get after pressing enter. After rebooting a few times I was able to log in. Now, rebooting isn't helping, I'm unable to log in at all. I stay at the 'logging in...' message until I shut down.

Ok, so for those of us who were dealing with all those "can't login" questions, Jorge sent me an email about that, and it appears to be this bug.
If someone can investigate, that'd be great.
and then we can close all those questions as duplicates of a master question or something

Hi guys, are you sleeping?

@Prasad: I'm not. :-)
I'm at work, though.

here

OK!, do you guys found any huge performance difference between live version and the installed version of the ubuntu 12.04?

To be honest, I have never used the live version of Ubuntu 12.04, but I can imagine that there will indeed be quite a performance difference.

I actually haven't trying the live version yet. Which ones has the lower performance hit?

2:27 PM
Especially if used from CD.

Agree with @NiekBergman

Of course, I'm spoiled with having an SSD :-P
(though it's only 64GB :-()

Even when I use a USB boot for 11.04 and 11.10, I saw long waits when just loading up the live instance of ubuntu.
yea, that's the one problem with SSD's right now... going to hold out for now ;)
my music would use up 20GB of that space :P

@ruffEdgz live version got paddle to the metal performance!!!!!

@ruffEdgz: Install 2 drives in your laptop, one SSD, one HDD.
Performance win, storage win :)

2:30 PM
@NiekBergman I tried from a pen drive and it's much faster then CD!

@Prasad: yes, generally optical storage will perform bad.
Pen drive will be faster.
But HDD will usually be faster than pen drive :-)
And SSD definitely :D
Most pen drives are not made for high performance.
But will at least perform better than a CD :-)

then why a installed one get slower!, I can't imagine, my 12.04 is slower than the live version (with the default settings and apps)
may be it is a wubi one?

Hello all
Hello @RolandTaylor
The Force is strong with this one

@Prasad is your instance of Ubuntu on a laptop or desktop? I'm just curious since on most laptops that are a bit older, the HDD speeds were slower (some came in 7200RPM but other were 5400).

@AmithKK Helllooooo

@ruffEdgz: Yeah, some laptops don't have the space for 2 storage devices.
Mine comes with a docking station that I could put a HDD in (though I would need to buy a bay for it)

then i'll give a try to install it on a dedicated partition. but I have no good experience, help

A: What is the most "Ubuntu" way of preventing certain users from shutting down, suspending etc?

James HenstridgeAs mentioned in the other question, you can control these actions via PolicyKit's local authority system. If you create a file /etc/polkit-1/50-local.d/restrict-shutdown.pkla with content like: [Disable shutdown/etc for group restricted] Identity=unix-group:restricted Action=org.freedesktop.con...

Isn't this like only for UI based shutdown?
If a user tries sudo reboot with his password it should still work as long as reboot isn't blocked via sudoers.

UGT morning e1 :D

@htorque The one window layout is pretty neat. It is available from 2.7 already. ;)

2.7 is not in quantal, though :P
and i'm allergic to PPAs
@OctavianDamiean depends on what "certain users" mean. a non-admin can't do 'sudo'.

5:48 PM
Mhmm, good point.

sudo userdel foo admin - problem solved.
why give someone root privileges that's not supposed to shut down the system.

There seems to be no update manager Gnome Shell extension. adds that on his to-do list

@Dave did you solve that question about the ntfs question?

6:05 PM
@OctavianDamiean better add learn how to use unity to your to-do list :P

@htorque I was an Unity user since day one of Unity. :D

then it's your duty to hate gnome shell! :D

Nah, Gnome Shell is actually pretty good.

Wow, the last time gimp released I had a heron for a wallpaper
Good tiimes...

I kinda enjoy it.

yeah, since they made it look a lot like unity, it's much more bearable. :D

right, that's the plan.
don't know why they make stuff bigger bigger bigger. how are you supposed to carry it around? in a "man purse"? :D

Well, you need to grow man.

No manual entry found for purse

Q: KUbuntu 10.04 / Dolphin File Manager: Is there a way to make .desktop files display the filename the same as the NAME= in the metadata?

user66001As shown in the below screenshot (sorry I couldn't make it inline - Seems points on other stackexchange subforums don't count here), if I have a Folder Widget setup to point to the Desktop "place", the .desktop files appear with the filename of the Name= value in the file. http://imgur.com/FGTZh...

Hi all

hi @Takkat

Hope I didn't miss too much.

@Takkat it was announced that Wayland will be pushed to 12.04 in three days as an SRU, and that Ask Ubuntu will be required to accept, process, and resolve any bug reports that might result

lol - there will be no bugs.

7:42 PM
@JacobJohanEdwards as the default compositor or just as an option?

@aking1012 default compositor. The update will also migrate users' ext4 filesystems to ReiserFS, which the tech board has decided should be the future of Ubuntu file storage.

i'd make tmpfs the default

@JacobJohanEdwards the plan to make NTFS recognise Ubuntu permissions was buried.

It's okay, Hans has agreed to lead Canonical to the body
of unfinished work he was doing on this feature
Hopefully that will sentence us to fewer years without NTFS permission support

:-o

7:53 PM
Oh, and steam is coming to linux
(guess which one of the above pronouncements is true for a prize)

They are all worth a prize ;P

Very well @Takkat. You're now eligible for unlimited free downloads of the Ubuntu operating systems, you may claim your prize at www.ubuntu.com.

Why is it that we hear only around releases about Ubuntu is "not woking", "stop working", and such?
People should take more care on their OS.

@JacobJohanEdwards I knew I shouldn't have upgraded...
thx for the info

sudo userdel $USER admin - most problems solved. :D

8:08 PM
brief aside, it mildly bothers me that pylint detects camelCasing as a syntax error

@htorque :) a static OS - no more harmful tweaks made - will run forever. No more upgrades needed.

that's harsh
@Takkat exactly. it's called "user" for a reason. use, but don't modify.

@aking1012 just obey pep-8. For the love of <s>god</s> Guido, just obey pep-8
I love golang because it actually enforces code style with go fmt. Let that particular type of bikeshedding wither on the vine.
pep 8 is completely optionally, but advised for the same reason.

An unmodified Ubuntu always looks so fresh, so nice and so clean. Like on the first day we met.

@JacobJohanEdwards I understand. It's just hard to change habits sometimes.

8:12 PM
@JacobJohanEdwards are you using go? i read google's intro of go, sounds interesting, but had no time (or project) to play around with it yet.

Go seems interesting. Vala seems interesting too, but I haven't looked at the syntax for either.

Yup, I've been waiting on a good project to use it. The concurrency model rocks; it's as robust and simple as Haskell's while still keeping a standard imperative coding paradigm. Compiles fast as lighting. Also, the go tools rock at dead simple automatic building, dependency resolution, unit testing, etc.
In five years, I think Go will be in a similar industry position to what Python is now.
@aking1012 Vala is nice. The next time I write a Python C extension, I'll just use Vala and wire it through introspection. That said, the language seems a bit directionless and is unlikely to ever wander far beyond the GNOME camp's git repos.
It's just C cleaned up, really. It's approach to (non) garbage collection is interesting, but probably more complicated that just free
On the topic of new languages, Dart is an abomination. Don't even look.
For example, this is Dart's approach to threading:

@JacobJohanEdwards thx for the warning

new HelloIsolate().spawn().then((SendPort sendPort) {
  sendPort.send("sailor", receivePort.toSendPort());
});
This is go's, semantically equivalent:
go Hello(words chan)
words <- "sailor"
@aking1012 no problem. Like any petty programmer, I love complaining about languages I don't like

You know what I think a super interesting project would be? (all or most) Gtk widgets as html/xml elements with CSS and possibly JS. Make it all render-able as a browser. Then you just have connective tissue from gtk ui files to a neat web-ui

8:27 PM
That already exists. Search for "broadway GTK+"

that's neat. reading...

hi @labarna - do follow the hybrid graphics project for ubuntu. i like the concept, but the details aren't working yet. it's def something to keep an eye on.

@aking1012, it seems to mostly just work for 6xxx cards

@labarna really? maybe i have some bias from only seeing 'i have a problem' in questions instead of 'works for me'. it's def a great thing to have though. i would REALLY like to have the ability to do opencl only on a powerful card and handle WM/DE on a weak card

i was trying to find a way to build 0.1 more than once without adding a .1 to the end via launchpad

more than once...
for individual versions of ubuntu?

yes, like it doesn't merit a point release for code cleanup

packaging string formatting: 0.1-1~[release]1
for example :P

yes like that

that's what needed to be done :)

11:13 PM
~[release]1 must have been what i was missing

mhm
that shows you the naming algorithms :P
(Oneiric's still in the works for updating :P)

it's in my bookmarks
thx for the help btw. like i WANT to know how to do things right, i just can't always find the right documentation

on IRC, go ask in #ubuntu-motu or #ubuntu-packaging
i prefer the MOTU channel, but i'm more advanced of a packager so i know more of what they say
:P
(on irc.freenode.net)

i really like the ubuntu software center application but .... is there any way to get it to do batch installs? That was where synaptic shined, where I could check a whole bunch of packages and have it install them all at once. Because the software center does it all one at a time, it takes forever to finish.

What is the difference between "Nautilus", "Files" and "Home Folder"? http://askubuntu.com/questions/131075/what-is-the-difference-between-nautilus-files-and-home-folder?atw=1 #nautilus

11:23 PM
@JoshuaRobison dpkg --set-selections is great for that

@aking1012, that will change the behavior of the software center?

no

apt-get works too though... just stringing along the package names... but it would be nice to get the software center to mimic the same behavior....

I think SC is targeting end users, not system setup ppl.

end users don't want fast installs?
end users don't search the software store and click to install a bunch of stuff and then they aren't like "wow these installs are gonna take forever"

11:29 PM
I think the idea is that end users should only need to install a package or two at a time. Or a meta-package needs to be created for that purpose.

fine, if that is how end users really behave... but even so , the software center could at least batch the future installs while one of them is installing
it doesn't have to do each one one at a time
the end user would click on one and it would install and while it is installing the other ones in the install list would be batching. once the first install finished , the batch that had been waiting would all install as a batch

open a feature request/brainstorm/wishlist bug for a batch processing tab if that's how you feel

the end user would have no idea what hit him except .... it would be a lot faster
i guess i should :p
sorry for the rant

np. i do it frequently too

it was more like ... i didn't know that the feature did not exist
but now I do. thank you

11:37 PM
@JoshuaRobison I can say from direct experience that sometimes saying "this is low priority, but i think it's counter-intuitive" results in magic fixes without much in the way of "WAT?"
