Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, AFAIK does not kill X processes. It only restarts the X server, Probability is gedit and firefox are still running.
To confirm this:
After pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, Press Ctrl+Alt+F1,which will take you to the CUI console
In this console run the pgrep firefox or pgrep ged...

Guys, I have a noobish question. I have cheese installed but I have a few ideas (extensions to existing codes mostly). My version, however, is a version older than the latest stable one. Do I have to remove existing cheese before compiling from source? or should I let them co-exist? what would be a better strategy?
@Nunoxic You should almost always have the same version you're compiling against installed. Then if you make install something, you'll clobber anticipated to exist files. So updates still work
The scrollbars in Unity are of very low contrast, and I can't notice where the scroll bar bug is just with peripheral vision. I have to look at the scrollbar. With a very 22" monitor, 1920*1080, the bar is quite small, and it's hard to notice where the bug is.
Look at Mac OS X interface and noti...

Wow I couldn't login to the chat for some reason. It appears after 10 minutes looking for the problem that I had to logout then login again. Maybe the system does not support 7+ days of logged in status or something.
Can anybody please explain since I don't understand it clearly, the change proposed for Wubi. Will it be removed or will something from it be changed?
@LuisAlvarado I think (after reading things for a very short time) they're talking about removing it from the CD so they can update it faster than the release schedule allows. Seems to make sense to me if they made a little downloadable installer that when run, just downloaded the image and installed it.
And yeah, Chat's login system can be really bizarre at times. Logging in and out several times usually fixes it :)
@LuisAlvarado Ha, yeah more than a couple of people have accidentally misspelt it. No, I build websites and to my knowledge have never worked directly (or indirectly AFAIK) for a company in the oil industry.
Well it turns out the people in charge of the event didn't mention the point again or at least not find it good. So basically I left it there. Don't want to pull one of you guys to an event and then tell you that the live chat will not go.
Showing my appreciation to Ask Ubuntu (and numerous others) for being a reason behind me becoming an Ubuntu member.
Warning: Uber long blog post that is pretty geeky. Only bother to open the link if you know what #Ubuntu really means. http://unbrokenspectrum.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/i-am-now-an-ubuntu-member/
I need to setup a Linux-based server which is going to be the backend for our web services.
This is what I need: (In order of importance)
A GUI to manage applications and files
It would be running a custom built C++ server
Probably also the LAMP stack, if needed.
I would be trying out ERP or ...
Hi there, quick question: I am remotely connected (via ssh) as an administrator, and there is a standard user already logged in to that machine. I want to force a log-out on that user - how do I do that?
OK, I tried the 3 suggestions (sudo su - ...) but none seem to work. I am no longer sure that the user1 is connected locally and not through ssh (although I cant see where it connected from). So, in that case, @MarcoCeppi mentioned "you can kill their ssh pid" - how?
well, this takes too much time (i thought an admin can easily terminate a user session, but it seem to be more complicated). I am rebooting the machine.
