I think this synonym should be completed without delay:

2 hours later…
2:07 AM
Is it just me or does dh_make generate a lot of files?
So... many... files :O

@GeorgeEdison Some of them must be there I think

Some of what?

@GeorgeEdison The files:D

Where?

debian packaging tools...generate all the things.

2:09 AM
@GeorgeEdison In your picture duh

I don't understand what you're saying.

changelog, compat, control, copyright, docs, rules

All of the files in the picture were generated by running dh_make.

@GeorgeEdison They should be

Okay... I was just saying that it was a lot.
AAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!
I just spent a whole bunch of time writing up a nice post for the Kindle Forum and then when I hit submit: "You must have purchased something from Amazon to post a new topic."

2:27 AM
@GeorgeEdison LOL

After clicking back, my nicely written article was gone.

so nobody knew of a marquee/ticker app. turns out there's supposed to be marquee support in html5 and a transparent webkit browser fits the order quite simply
@GeorgeEdison if you want me to post it, i've purchased from amazon and i'll attribute it to you

I can't recover my post :(
Thanks anyway.
I'll let you know if I feel inspired to rewrite it again.

o/ @AbrahamVanHelpsing

3:11 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing see anything glaringly obvious that i'm missing?

check your iptables list. if FORWARD DROP comes before your specific dynamic forwarding rule, it will drop the traffic before it's evaluated for compliance

and this is why i ask, Thank you <3
well, its an internal server that needs forwarding for a few services. Its eventually going to land in the DMZ
I'm spinning up VirtualBox based VPS's on it for services.

p-
virtualbox.. VPS?
doth. not. compute. ;p
unless you mean a VM

c'mon man.
a vps by definition IS a virtual machine.

a vps is a specific service ;p

3:20 AM
i hate you sometimes

/me is just splitting hairs ;p

forcing my terminology to evolve

@lazyPower oh...yeah, they could need forwarding. i haven't tested it, but i would think it is determined by what kind of networking you're using

LOL

sorry, I am just being growchy ;p

3:21 AM
go grouch at a perl programmer ;) Make Marco proud

lol
been running windows 8 the past few days ;p
I have an excuse!

who's fault is that? none of us held a loaded banana to your head and told you to boot into that .. excuse of an OS

@JourneymanGeek What excuse?/

obviously someone elses.
@lazyPower: SU contest ;p
/me is pretty darned close to hitting level 4 ;p

to see which Unix user can survive in Windows the longest?

3:22 AM
lol
I use both

its like idlerpg man

I swear I probably will be throwing on a nice little KDE distro onto juno once this is done, the poor dear.

its all fun and games until someone breaks the silence, then the house of cards comes crashing down

(and run it on the next gaming box. I'm just a little nuts)

3:26 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing LOL

oh wow... facepalms

@lazyPower Awwww yeah

@lazyPower: ahh the internet. It ALREADY has every horrible thing you can think of.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Potassium can kill man...

i challenge you sir, to a duel

3:29 AM
@lazyPower /me also too

hmm
whatever happened to @jokerdino?

bring it...

oh boy, look at what i started

that's pretty epic. i see your bannangun and raise you this:

3:32 AM
I see your crossbow and raise you this:

Never bring a banana to a banana bomb fight

(Robin Hood)

@JourneymanGeek points for originality

The 1st Ask Ubuntu Chat War is now on

3:33 AM
@Joshua i think you missed the part where it shoots buzzsaw blades

you call that a CROSSBOW?

@smartboyhw I doubt it is the first... IRC we had a rainbow trout slapping fest once...

well, That isn't a crossbow, its a ballista ;p

You will never see it coming...

3:34 AM
welcome to the games ladies and gents

insert peanut butter jelly time reference

@JourneymanGeek that thing doesn't even exist, @GeorgeEdison that is a huge ass model plane...

3:35 AM
@Joshua: besides the point ;p

Then I bring this:

there was a model-like warthog with a Gatling in the nose-cone from by some aeronautics contractors for a southeast asian country. don't mock model airplanes

Waaaaay too many propellers, but :P

(I almost linked a shadow vessel, but I LOVE the white stars)

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I still think Robin Hood can take your buzz-saw blade throwing arse...

3:36 AM
@GeorgeEdison: NO SUCH THING AS TOO MAN PROPELLERS ;p
that said, I prefer pusher props
so smexy

and thats my final contribution

Is that what happens when you stop reading? @lazyPower

why can't the ender's game movie be out already so i can drop a screenshot of the mass cannon in action?

You know... it kinda looks like @RolandTaylor

dude i do that while i'm reading.

3:39 AM
Are we done discussing bananas? Or did I miss something?

@lazyPower was kind of "going banannas" but i think it's sort of done

I try to keep my spurts short lived... i get to look at the company hipchat logs... and its like scrolling through 80 pages of google image search results.

I'll bring the drinks, you bring the funny type of thing? or horrible mangle memes with no relevance?

all of the above
gah stupid forwarding rule isnt working :|

:/ i'll look again

i dont think its something you missed, i layered in UFW instead of going pure iptables
I'll ping you on G+ for some expert advice on this

well that makes me feel marginally better. it would be nice if it worked though

I've got QENet building now. (I've even got it building for Raring.)

@AbrahamVanHelpsing if ufw is the culprit i'll revisit the drawing board

4:13 AM
i'm out, gnight everybody

night all

5:09 AM
appears

Grm
Damn. @jokerdino
@GeorgeEdison Hey \o
@GeorgeEdison Ever used subway or mongodb?

Nope.

@GeorgeEdison Where does Notify OSD store its messages
Or the messaging menu

No clue.

5:52 AM
Okay, time to fire up valgrind. This. Will. Get. Ugly.
So ENet is double-freeing a packet I explicitly freed? What?

@GeorgeEdison I have no idea what your talking about
E: Write error - write (28: No space left on device)
E: Can't mmap an empty file
E: Failed to truncate file - ftruncate (9: Bad file descriptor)
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
Err
what does that mean

6:20 AM
> but you need to think before posting. (from a comment)
was this self-critisism?

Anyone know How I can make XKCD graphs?

Q: xkcd-style graphs

Amatya I received an email to which I wanted to respond with a xkcd-style graph, but I couldn't manage it. Everything I drew looked perfect, and I don't have enough command over Plot Legends to have these pieces of text floating around. Any tips on how one can create xkcd-style graphs? Where things lo...

BBL

7:08 AM
good morning

o/

hi
@Subin what is the error showing in the grub loading
Takkat around here?

@GeorgeEdison could you whip up a quick python script for me?

<-- This room is so quiet, should i flag a message to invite some mods? ;P
5

7:25 AM
@AmithKK I may be able to.

Strange! No mod here also! even after flagging

@Mahesh I should be able to drag and drop an google image result and it filters the imgurl part of the url, and downloads the full to a folder

Q: Change account login

K.K PatelCurrently I am logging with launchpad,Lanchpad id logins with yahoo id, I want to change account login details and login directly through yahoo Id. How can I do this with keeping same points and batches ?

umm.. anything with GUI, I cant be of much use. :/
actually writing a userscript should be easy there. :P

@Mahesh not a gui
It just needs to accept args
like I can drag it to the panel

7:32 AM
how exactly would you do that?

Pin the script to the panel
it then passes the args to it
http://www.google.co.in/imgres?hl=en&sa=X&biw=1600&bih=776&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=ovd2_HuFwyJtrM:&imgrefurl=tribuneindia.com/2012/20120813/…
Like that url
I just want to seperate the http://www.tribuneindia.com/2012/20120813/dun1.jpg
from the image
so I would launch the script like

hmm...

and it would retrieve http://www.tribuneindia.com/2012/20120813/dun1.jpg

thats simple.

and save it to ~/project/
@Mahesh I'm sorta low on time

7:36 AM
there is a library for manipulating urls and http request

urllib2
I know
:P
@Mahesh I just want to seperate the image part of the url

I'll get back in few minutes

BBL

okie

Hi @AmithKK

7:39 AM
@smartboyhw Hello

import urlparse
url=urlparse.urlparse(link)
params=urlparse.parse_qs(url.query)
if 'imgurl' in params:
    print params['imgurl'][0]
try that

Yep that works
now make it take link as an arg

import sys
if(len(sys.argv)>1):
    print sys.argv[1]
that spits out first argument.
now join both.
import urlparse
import sys

if(len(sys.argv)>1):
    link = sys.argv[1]
else:
    print "Expecting argument"
    return
url=urlparse.urlparse(link)
params=urlparse.parse_qs(url.query)
if 'imgurl' in params:
    print params['imgurl'][0]

@Mahesh Yay
@Mahesh now the download part :P

one minute sir

7:49 AM
thanks :D

import urllib
urllib.urlretrieve(imgurl, filename)

@Mahesh yeah, I need a way to actually make the filename the name of the image

the same name?

yeah :)
Sorry if I'm troubling you

np. :)
import os
print os.path.basename(imgurl)
now to put everything together

7:58 AM
@Mahesh That would include the http:// right?
So, It wont work :P

the name will include only something.jpg etc
imgurl includes http://

cool
so what happens if I actually input the path of an image?

as in?

like http://www.test.com/test.jpg

it prints test.jpg

8:00 AM
and it would pull the image too?

let me patch up and give you the final script

ok :)

    sys.exit(1)

filename = os.path.basename(imgurl)
you want to loop over tons of images from google results page directly? :P

@Mahesh nah

why exactly did you ask for this?

8:05 AM
Project work
I didn't want to click Save Image As each time
Yes, lazy :P
so, what happens if you pass i.stack.imgur.com/nOfMe.jpg as an arg?

hmm... you could have used one of those extensions

@Mahesh I like it the python way

it prints an error and bails
about half my rep is from bounties. :P
I lllllove bounties

8:19 AM
It actually fails on drag and drop
It does'nt pass it with double quotes
:P
@Mahesh --^

how exactly are you drag-dropping?

Pull from browser>Drop into panel

which panel?

XFCE panel launcher

@A.S. around hidden under my pile of work...

8:34 AM
a string has to be a string.
what else does it get passed as?
I have no idea what XFCE panel launcher does.

hey guys, o/

@EvandroSilva Welcome

good (morning) :)

@Mahesh as a string without double quotes

umm... if its a string, it works
it looks like its doing something evil behind the scenes.

8:37 AM
It just spits out lot of output

like?

amith@amith-desktop:~/project4$ ../pull google.co.in/…
[1] 10889
[2] 10890

@AmithKK That IS a lot of output

umm... did I use a print anywhere?
@AmithKK what exactly is in your script
I am sure that output cant be generated by my poor tiny script

:/ justchecked, and you are right!!

If you pass it with "url" it works

that is one wierd error you have shown me today

live and learn
:P

That is so called "debugging":P

well, just got in the middle of the conversation, but...
& in the terminal means execute as a new job, if you put the quotes, it would be like \&, escape the next character.
just thinking out loud...

9:01 AM
oh wait you are so right!!!

Q: How does python interpret command line arguments?

MaheshHere is a simple snippet of python code #!/usr/bin/python import sys print sys.argv Now, if I save this as test.py, make it executable, and run it as ./test.py abc it prints ['./test.py','abc'] which is perfectly sensible. But if I run it as ./test.py http://www.google.co.in/imgres?hl=en&am...

answer that and get some rep. :P

So, how do I fix that

always pass quoted :P
or figure out another way

can I make bash autopass quotes?

I recommend using single quotes, since "$VARIABLE" can be replaced by a system variable.

yup that

9:15 AM
@EvandroSilva like?

'something' instead of "something"

I can't really control how it passes
that would result in modification of the source code for chroe
BBL

can bash shell expansion and job control be turned off? :P

@Mahesh I think not
why don't you make the program receive an user input instead of sending it through args?

/me dives deep into that man bash
@EvandroSilva thats @AmithKK's trouble. He wanted a script that can pull image given a googe results url, I gave him one. :P

9:19 AM
@Mahesh xD

if 'imgurl' in params:
    imgurl = params['imgurl'][0];
else:
    print "ENoImgurl : link no has imgurl";
    sys.exit(1)
(untested)

it works. you dont need to test
though you omitted the saving part. :P
and the print should have been changed to expecting input instead of expecting argument

yeah, made it in a rush

Q: Changing ownership in Ubuntu

user654019I am using Ubuntu on Virtual Box and I have a folder which is shared between the host (Windows) and the VM (Ubuntu). When I open any file in the share folder in Ubuntu, I can not change it as its owner is set to root. How can I change the ownership to myself?
