A: How Does Gnome Know Where To Categorize & Place Shortcuts In The Gnome Menu?

NateWThe files in /usr/share/applications are *.desktop files. They are simply text files that hold the shortcut data. If you want to reorganize, I would not recommend editing those files, but using the application for editing the menu (alacarte) You can get to it three ways (I'm assuming you are usi...

needs peer review tho, didnt know it did that. hi5 to SE for not being retarded with edits.

@lazyPower nice work!

@JorgeCastro you inspire me

Q: Trouble with DisplayLink device in Linux virtual machine.

George EdisonI have a virtual machine running Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit. Using the tools provided with VirtualBox, I have added a DisplayLink device to the VM and created the following xorg.conf file: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Server Layout" Screen 0 "DisplayLinkScreen" 0 0 ...

@RolandTaylor your comment could've been nicer ;-)
Okay I'm not in natty at the minute, but doesn't it already ship Banshee?

@StefanoPalazzo lol
since I can't edit it, I replied to my own comment

hehe
there's a trick to editing comments @RolandTaylor, you can always delete a comment and post another one
Ah I'm frustrated with HTML and CSS :\

2:57 AM
oh ya

Do you know any CSS?
<aside>NEW</aside><h1>Hello World</h1>
I want the aside to be on the same line as the h1, and centred vertically.

I've never seen <aside>, but I believe it may be possible to get it to line up as you wish - I would suggest using KompoZer actually (to automate things)
I could try to give you by hand but it's a bit tricky with CSS at times ;)
then again 1 sec let my try something

I've already decided not to bother with anything older than firefox 3.6 :-) But I can't even get the aside to go on the left. display:inline seems to put it on the same line, but only once.
<aside>NEW</aside><h15>Hello World</h1>
<aside>NEW</aside><h5>Hello World</h5>

I will try something in bluefish

Isn't that toxic if prepared improperly?

3:07 AM
:P yep

or maybe it was Blowfish :P

hmm, aside is not a tag that either I or bluefish seem familiar with :P
is that and HTML5 feature?
ahh yeah
google is my friend

yeah, aside is new

HTML5 is going to be more headache than anything else for web developers :)
oh joy! bluefish crashed as soon as I saved a blank css file :P
pulls hair out either I'm missing something or the css isn't even touching the <aside> tag O.o
I think the best solution might be the old borderless table trick :P

heh
I'm a bit closer, but it looks totally different in firefox, as ever

3:19 AM
oh wait - it works, partly

I got pretty much the same result

impressive... :)

I'm going to try chrome

this is how it looks now, I can move it around using "top: "
@ajmitch really?
:-)
Also, <BLINK> doesn't work

3:22 AM
@StefanoPalazzo oh yes, I can see that it's the UI of the future & will amaze & astound everyone who dares to glance upon its glory

HTML5 is cool and all, but it needs the <headache> tag removed

hehe
Oh hang on! <MARQUEE> works
now where do I get some of them animated gifs?

it does?
so they basically revived the one thing that made internet explorer useful?

@StefanoPalazzo I think you can get <blink> to work with some javascript :)

@ajmitch no that's too modern, I'll just use a java Applet
In fact, I think I'll make the whole site in a java applet :P

3:26 AM
@StefanoPalazzo pity that you can't have ActiveX instead

well you can't always get what you want (:

I must be SERIOUSLY addicted to searching for bad answers or questions, and flagging them >.>
can someone slap me to stop me from being a moderation addict?

I'm not quite getting how to get <aside> to bend like a spoon :/

I've spend a day with this and got as far as having nice fonts and a heading...

3:28 AM
perhaps @StefanoPalazzo or @MarcoCeppi? :P

I had a whole site yesterday, until I opened it in firefox, when all my dreams where shattered
@EvilPhoenix don't tell anyone, but that's how this site works :PPP

cries
I'm still thinking of ways to get money from my web development awesomeness :)

Oh I know, I'll try a pseudo-whateveritscalled

@StefanoPalazzo but do you have to have stuff working with IE?

@StefanoPalazzo yeah, but i managed to get my flag weight of 504.???? to 533.6631 in only a few hours o.o
hell I dont even ask questions anymore, nor do I answer them... i just go around sifting through the long list of questions and answers with /review, and flag them as I go, where appropriate

3:31 AM
@ajmitch nope; I know perfectly well how lucky I am and that I should stop whining about it :P
.new:before {
    content: "NEW";
    font-size: 8px;
}
is that bad style?

looks okay to me

I was thinking about doing the whole site in CSS, so as to have a completely empty html. But it doesn't work, you can't have markup in content: ""; :-(

@StefanoPalazzo yeah, doing the whole site in CSS just doesn't sound right :P
it's like going from one extreme to the other

@StefanoPalazzo do you happen to know the exact increment value for flag weight going up past a +500 flag weight?

it would've been fun though (:
I like to break things
@EvilPhoenix I think that's a secret. But in any case, I don't know it

3:39 AM
:P
was only curious. ;P
on another note, any of you got a clue about this?

Q: How to create a meta-package that automatically installs other packages?

EvilPhoenixI'd like to be able to create a package that doesnt contain any code or programs itself, but instead installs other packages that exist in the repositories onto a computer, sort of how the ubuntu-restricted-extras package does?

I wouldn't even worry about flag weights or various things like that
@EvilPhoenix yes, you just have debian/control declare the things that it should depend on

starred

and not include any source or anything else?

I remember one time hearing about CSS only sites, but I've never tried that

@EvilPhoenix The simplest way is to use equivs
I'll write something in an answer if you prefer

3:41 AM
@ajmitch i'd rather you do that
that way, I can take a look at it when i wake up and am actually able to process information effectively :P

That way, other people can use it as well

@StefanoPalazzo thanks for asking for help :D
I don't know if you believe in God but that was a God-send
found something very useful on the w3c
I am so excited!

what's that?

their certification options :)
you see, my country makes it almost impossible to get certified even after all the hard work I did studying
felt like a waste of time and free education, and long sleepless nights (literally)
to get next kin to nothing
cause here it's crab in a barrel vs dog eat dog
but!

is it expensive?

3:44 AM
I have found my solution!
it starts off seemingly cheap, but it quickly becomes expensive
and the process isn't worth the result
more than half of our students often end up failing or giving up
and many of them literally (no joke) get nervous break-downs

dang it, i must have been doing so much flagging, that the system is taking me for a bot rather than a human >.>

@EvilPhoenix you're down the guinea pig hole Neon

You're talking about the bajan educational system now, right, not the w3c certification process?

The Matrox is a virtual reality construct, that runs on ReactOS
@StefanoPalazzo yeah

Oh I see (chat is messed up as always)

A: How to create a meta-package that automatically installs other packages?

ajmitchA meta-package like this can be created with a tool called equivs which will create a package with just dependency information. From the equivs manpage: To use equivs, you do: a. cd /tmp b.1. equivs-control ns-control or b.2. cp /usr/share/doc/equivs/examples/<a control file> ns-control...

@EvilPhoenix there, nice & simple

w3c's certification is like manna from heaven :D

I haven't tested it of course :)

perfect!

@StefanoPalazzo great, you can fix up the formatting & add useful stuff then :)

yessir /o
@ajmitch it's okay to to use any directory, other than /tmp, correct?

3:51 AM
@RolandTaylor why did you remove that text from there?
@StefanoPalazzo should be, I don't think it need an empty directory

@ajmitch remove which text?

@RolandTaylor it looked like you removed <a control file>
this was a copy & paste from the manpage - it's saying to copy a file from that directory as an example

I didn't on purpose
I think it must have done it by accident

interesting

I figured it out

3:54 AM
that line was also split at the 'or'

using the quotation cause the "<a" to appear as an <a> tag

amusing
first rep I've got for over a month, too :)

finally I got it back to normal :)
nice :D
k guys I gotta run
getting sleepy
@ajmitch check your rep now :)

We now have syntax highlighting
2
interesting...

@RolandTaylor yeah ok, I can see lots of questions getting votes at once :P

4:02 AM
@StefanoPalazzo I can't wait to make use of it :D

@ajmitch I've edited your answer, but I've changed rather a lot, check it out and see if you're happy with it
I don't normally do that...

@StefanoPalazzo that's fine, thanks :)

This is just such an awesome answer, it seemed a good idea to make it into a step-by-step guide

The man page was just a little rough

@ajmitch the depends are separated by commas, that's correct isn't it?

4:05 AM
Yes
Having too many blank lines isn't though

You take care of that, when it comes to packaging, I really don't know what I'm doing :P

they're grouped into stanzas separated by blank lines - one source stanza, then one per binary package :)

4:54 AM
yawn
@ajmitch: I get a weird error about standards or something when I use the method you described for metapackaging
:/

that the standards-version is too old?

mhm

change it to 3.9.1 or something, the example from the manpage is old
I just changed it in the answer

that fixed it :)

where?
no
it's stating what debian policy version your package adheres to

5:01 AM
@ajmitch should I be worried about messages like this?
dh_md5sums: Compatibility levels before 5 are deprecated.

No

during the build
ok
thanks

good morning/evening all

Hi @OctavianDamiean

Q: How to disable the windows 7 flavor in Ubuntu 11.04?

谢继雷My friend Smith upgraded his Ubuntu from Maverick to the recent 11.04 alpha release, though I haven't tried myself, but it seems like the appearance is changed a lot. Now, he wants to disable those Windows-7-like features, whenever possible, such as Win+NUM shortcuts, is it possible?

O.O
Who tf is Smith?

this question deserves a -1 only for comparing Unity with Windows

@OctavianDamiean hehe - deserves -100 for that.

7:45 AM
@OctavianDamiean in indented code segments
Interesting question, if Smith had updated, he'd just get the regular gnome desktop (classic), not Unity.
maybe smith is a metasyntactic variable and he doesn't know that an upgrade won't change the desktop

Smith should be recommended to run Server edition to avoid any similarities :P

I can't figure it out, either this is a rant disguised as a question, or I'm completely missing the point.

@StefanoPalazzo he got my down-vote for it
plus an explanation on why

+1 for explaining your down-vote, that's what we like to see!

oh he removed the question
one down-vote before peer pressure

7:54 AM
@OctavianDamiean good idea ;)

yeah, too bad, i was about to hit the icon :D

8:11 AM
the testing and discussion forum is becoming a "tell everyone in every thread that unity is no good" forum. :D

@htorque best solution is not to use forums at all
from my experience I can tell that discussions are never productive on the internet

@htorque innovations always had a hard stand - that's life shrug

@OctavianDamiean "arguing on the internet is like f**cking for virginity" >:D

I'm happy to be an early-adopter ... god knows what I may have missed and what I may miss otherwise
@htorque lol

negative critisism is the best way for improvements - positive critisism leads to a standstill

8:20 AM
thats why I love this platform so much. Here we don't have discussions but only answers (facts). All is logical and without emotions.
2

@OctavianDamiean +1

@Takkat hah, negative critisism! you clearly haven't visited that forum. :D

@htorque I admit I haven't - hate endless (pointless) discussions

that's the point. despite its name, the "testing and discussion forum" isn't about writing how you like things (or how you hate that ubuntu isn't exactly how you want it to be) - it's all about testing and development discussions. besides, it's also the wrong place for negative critisism - constructive posts belong to the appropriate mailing lists.
for a while it was fine, but with every new release the quality of that forum sunk to a new low.
that's why i'm glad about the rise of AU :-)

and there is a slight difference between criticism and constructive criticism, the later includes an improvement suggestion
on forums you generally get the first one

8:31 AM
well, i'd call the former pointless ranting/fanboying :P

@OctavianDamiean true that, but many people simply can't do that due to lack of ideas

@Takkat then they should stfu and gtfo
sounds harsh and is harsh but true

well, i know about a lot of things that they aren't optimal without having a better solution at hand :P
the difference is, that i don't say "XYZ is crap" but "XZY isn't optimal, because" :)

We also need to know what most people dislike to get ideas

8:35 AM
@htorque if you are serious about them, sit back, invest some precious time thinking about a solution and then post it. ;)

@Takkat what are "most people" in the first place :P a lot of forum users think they represent the typical ubuntu user - that's where all the fail begins.

Often critisism is also the result of mere ignorance.
That's where AU helps a lot
@htorque that's true: happy people won't post

"Don't worry about people stealing an idea; if it's original, you'll have to shove it down their throats." ~ Howard Aiken

lol

lol

8:50 AM
there should be URL/path completion in AU ;)

9:49 AM
meh

I wake up to a discussion on how un-cool the Ubuntu forums are?! No offense the the Ubuntu forums team, but I never really got into it. Was too… seedy for my tastes.

10:13 AM
not uncool, they just need stricter moderation to make certain subforums more useful

10:58 AM
hi, how often do the moderators checks the community edits? :)

Q: Why is unity so f slow? Can I switch back?

YannisHi, Im very upset with the last Update on my EEEPC. Everything ist lagging as hell. It wasnt a Problem before. Personaly I dont like the new design, but I wont care if it works. But the "new" way of browsing files suxx for sure. Slow too and not very intuitiv. Sometimes there is the Icon to go ba...

@BRoland i think you're asking because of this?

yes, and the other question about software center

I am not sure if we can/should save this question

:D

if it wouldn't carry so much negative energy i would point that guy to the faq, but i'm all for just closing it :D

11:03 AM
@BRoland approved your edit. No Mod needed community can do this when we have enough rep. Big advantage as compared to ^forums ;)

i'd love to edit forum posts of other people :D

@htorque we could change it into a Q on how to install 11.04 on slow hardware, but I doubt this was meant by the asker.

i even think he's using 10.10 unity, which does suck on some older hardware

@Takkat nice, thanks - I'm understand now :)

#ayatana is dead - the power of mondays :D

11:09 AM
oh - I thought it's all dependent on the moon phase
but on mondays gravity seems more powerful - always drags me down

nice, it's closed :)

11:45 AM
just filled my hard disk and was looking through the file system here to find out what I can delete
any suggestions? /rofl is taking up a lot of space and looks like it has a lot of duplicates of other directories
sorry , not rofl , /rofs
read only file system

@JoshuaRobison rofl :D

xD :D
I'm leaving, bye

Think has got to do with the USB and is a read-only mountpoint
bye @B. Roland

@Takkat thanks. ill leave it heh
what I want to do is keep some of my pkg's on another drive
all my software is what is taking up the most space

12:01 PM
Hi all
can anyone me to install grub boot loader
on my laptop ...
i had ubuntu .. and i tried to install windows server, the boot loader is gone

@experimentX Run sudo update-grub

i cannot access ubuntu
that is installed
only from live usb

So you're in the live USB right now, correct?

yes

@BRoland All the time :) but there are other people (like 3k+ users) who can see and accept edits
I think it's 3k - might be 10k
Continues to read, see you got your answer

12:08 PM
I'm not sure how to reload GRUB on another disc....

well, you tried ,, thanks to you
Anyone any ideas???

@experimentX There's a way to do it - you can set which disk to install grub on with a command in the command line. I'm not 100% sure of it at the moment

well, if you please

12:24 PM
@Takkat That would be the right guide @experimentX

Yup, going through it

Are we supporting Linux Mint? Not really, are we?

@OctavianDamiean There's a topic on it in meta digs but I personally don't think so. Neither Mint or Backtrack
8
Q: Linux Mint (and other unofficial derivatives) - on topic?

fluteflute(Inspired by this question about Mint. ) You only have to look at Wikipedia to find a long long list of Ubuntu derivatives - should we allow, or even actively encourage, questions regarding these on Ask Ubuntu?

They should be flagged as migration to Unix.SE

cool, thanks :)
oy
should consult the meta more often

Meta for this community is like Cthulhu to the Lovecraft Mythos

12:39 PM
some questions just confuse the shit out of me wonders if that is possible

1:09 PM
god ... I'm so fed up with the Android tag already ...

On AU, or SO?

oh, haha

I think that our site name (AUs) is a bit misleading. That might be the reason why we have to many offtopic and Why is this version not in the repositories questions lately
more and more new users read Ask Ubuntu and think, "nice lets ask Ubuntu!"

It's possible, but it's just a matter of light reprimanding :)

1:16 PM
@MarcoCeppi yea you might be right. is a bit frustrated with SO

@OctavianDamiean spend an hour in #ayatana on freenode ;-)

@StefanoPalazzo is at work and can't use IRC :(

@OctavianDamiean Not even Web IRC?

@MarcoCeppi doesn't really like Web IRC clients but I could try

@OctavianDamiean irccloud.com kind of rules - but I don't have any invites

1:24 PM
Just saying, the problem isn't very bad at all, here. It's much worse in other places

@StefanoPalazzo you mean it can be worse than on the Android tag on SO? I can't believe that :(

shudders to think about all the misappropriated tags on SO

I can imagine ;)

@MarcoCeppi 7pm this Thursday right?

@lazyPower Uh, I think it's Wednesday. Speaking of which I need to organize some food

1:30 PM
Its on the sixth?

Oh man, I think THE Jin is going to be there

I need some good music for a deploy, any suggestions?

you know the problem is not only the low quality questions actually ... it is also the users that answer such questions right away just because they don't understand how SE is supposed to work and of course all the other experienced users that don't educate the not experienced users
I think some kind of mentoring program could help

@lazyPower TeamTeamWork Albums: Ocarina of Rhyme and Super Nintendo Sega Genisis

:O Seriously?!
Thats awesome, nice find @MarcoCeppi hi5

1:53 PM
@lazyPower Can you still make it - even though it's on the 6th?

@MarcoCeppi i just submitted a correction on my day off request
so i will know by the end of the day

Ah, kk - and if you haven't already, you should fill out this: spreadsheets.google.com/…

morning @lazyPower.

Morning @JamesGifford

How's it going?

2:00 PM
Trying to figure out what in the world i did on meetup.com to not use my standard account for the SE meetup
:|

Signed is using Facebook?

nah, i just wasnt locating the meetup on my account, however following the direct link from marco's twitter showed me as already attending. shrug
i dont spend enough time on meetup to know the ins ans outs of it. I'll have to make it a priority at some point.

odd. doesn't play with meetup, probably should eventually
Actually, thats not true. I found this Ruby group through meetup. But it turns out that Dad had known about it since day 1, he just never told me. lol

Anybody get Firefox 4 installed on a 64 bit system?
oopps - I mean - Good morning all

2:19 PM
@sadmicrowave yes...
@sadmicrowave but under Windows 7

Oli
2:31 PM
@sadmicrowave Yeah
Just using the mozilla-stable PPA

@sadmicrowave same here. I was using it at home from the PPA.

2:56 PM
that sucks, my work intranet will not allow me to add PPA's to my sources list. The key never authenticates meaning only the default PPA's are allowed through the firewall :(

@MarcoCeppi what's this? :D
