Does the Launchpad API support JSONP?

1 hour later…
5:05 AM
@StefanoPalazzo sorry I was out drinking
what did I miss?

morning :)
@JorgeCastro Not much, I implemented using the new renderer and short-cuts for every se site.

omg is it awesome?

@JorgeCastro Quick question... does the LP API support JSONP?

It's pretty great, yeah
you'll see what it's like the next time you boot and upgrade your natty machine ;-)

@GeorgeEdison not sure
I need to get more launchpadders reading AU

5:53 AM
morning @StefanoPalazzo

hello @karthick87 :)

which is the best remote controlling software for ubuntu?

no idea :-) Have you tried a few of them?

Tried remote desktop..But that is not much fast as vncviewer(windows)

I've never used them, so I have no clue. I guess it makes sense to just try all of the ones you can get your hands on

5:58 AM
Fine let me try..
I dont want my users to delete files from trash. Is there a way to do this??

You could set the 'undeletable' attribute on the trash directory, but they would still be able to delete files via rm
I think you can do it with chattr -u dir/, but you should ask a question on the site to be safe

Oke i will rise a question on the site..

I'm sure that's wrong, normally you'd use chattr for a single file. Also, I think it should be +u. It's not an every-day problem (:
Opps, reading the man-page, it doesn't work with ext4

1 hour later…
7:08 AM
@StefanoPalazzo one of my friend is using ubuntu 9.10.Recently he is facing resolution problem..Is it possible to restore back the previous settings?

uhm.
You can't revert to settings if you haven't saved them somewhere, but he might want to reconfigure the xserver entirely
`sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg`
something like that
or throw in a lucid cd ;-)

I have tried that command already but no use.It is still the same ;)

Any reason he's using such an old release?

No reason.He said that he is satisfied with that version and he dont want to upgrade to newer version..

Well, He's going to have to upgrade in about 26 days
9.10 is going out of support then
An upgrade to lucid will give him the "buttet proof x-server", that should be a convincing argument (:

7:19 AM
Fine i will tell him then :)

Wish I could be of more help. This might be a topic for the ubuntu-forums. But generally, using an end-of-life release is not a good idea at all

Q: How to restrict users on deleting files from trash folder?

karthick87I want to restrict my users to delete files from trash. Also i dont want my users to delete files bypassing trash. Is there any way to do this?

morning @StefanoPalazzo @karthick87

Hi @lazyPower :)

7:56 AM
Good morning all

Morning Takkat

Anybody knows how to debug a pulseaudio issue?
I am having this eerie silence here :(

8:43 AM
@Takkat any luck?

well sort of: rm ~/.pulse and reboot gave me some luck
not so sure how long this will last :/

hmm. thats odd, is this happening on 10.10 or the beta?

oh no this is 10.04 LTS still ;)

AH, ok
I'm running a hodge podge mixup of 10.10 and one 11.04 netbook. As of the updates lastnight I havent had but one compiz/unity crash knocks on wood

@lazyPower that's good :)
brb

8:58 AM
Too bad. Still can't have sound on 2nd user login :'(
log says: protocol-native.c: Denied access to client with invalid authorization data
and: module-alsa-card.c: Failed to find a working profile
has no idea why that is so
we are not in the Audio group btw

Welcome to the first day of the spring month april! :)
Sitting in an school having an alday test. :( any more first of april jokes?

@Alvar it's March 33 still :D
was launching pulseaudio in a terminal:
E: module-alsa-card.c: Failed to find a working profile.
But, there is sound :/

1 hour later…
10:24 AM
I go bonkers on this.
0
Q: What user settings control audio access?

TakkatRunning a regularly updated 10.04 LTS we have a weird issue with access to audio with pulseaudio 0.9.22. Sound device is ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) Login user1 after reboot: sound OK Login user2 after reboot: sound OK Login user1 then user2: sound OK: both have sound Login us...

I stay away from sound stuff. I normally break it even more more often than I fix it. :p

lol

sorry. lol.

@JamesGifford WHatup

Here I should restrict user access to myself - then I'd have no problems :D

10:27 AM
@lazyPower nothing really. Just jamming in the tag wikis. :) You?

toying with javascript and the last.fm api

I will never list my last.fm profile on a site (Or my pandora one either) - I don't want clients finding out I like dubstep. :P
Looks good though. :)

Finally got the cover-art business styled into a page design, the side-hub area which will eventually be tied into a template for some brand-name CMS thats undecided as for now. Trying to get some xdebug loving working in gvim (i forgot the keyboard commands...)

oh cool.

I've been spending way too much time in VS...

Why not James?
doesnt everyone want more Icon clutter?

Last thing I want is blinking icons. :p
as if that darn envelope in the messaging menu wasn't bad enough...

i vote that we bring back the <blink> tag

Are you April fooling me a day late? ;)

no, just being a rabble rouser ;)

10:33 AM
hehe. ;)

A: How do I enable automatic updates?

WeboideUsing apt-get upgrade -y is a WRONG way of doing this because it will suppose you say YES to any question! unattended-upgrades is the best practice of having automatic updates! You can set up unattended-upgrades pretty easily by typing this in a terminal: sudo apt-get install unattended-upgrad...

oops. apt-get upgrade -y is wrong. oops. That's how I do everything. :l

bad practice
it'll over-write your configs if you're not careful, which is bad mmkay

I know that now.

@RolandTaylor a Watermelon Cat feature?
I cant wait, i ordered one of the OGIO messenger bags from shop.ubuntu.com this morning, and a T-Shirt.

11:06 AM
"printers" has about 50 questions - that's good. Means getting a printer up and running is super easy.

it really is. Compared to how it used to be "back in the day"
i <3 using the ubuntu printer wizard. Makes life easy compared to searching for your own config on linuxprint.org

Haha - I remember the sleepless night dad had when he used Fedora, and he needed to get his printer working for a work paper thingy...

The thought of going back to rolling your own solution with the mess of ghost-script instructables out there makes me cringe. Thank the compilers that we came up with something better and user friendly to boot.

I just hate the Windows setup...

That seems to be the general consensus around these parts. uh-yup.

11:32 AM
Thinking that I should have a cron job that runs "compiz --replace" every 5 minutes - that way I don't have to reboot each time it crashes.

11:59 AM
i imagine it would eventually get in the way, but its worth a shot
and not to be a know-it-all but did you grab the latest xorg updates? i updated lastnight and thus far knocks on wood haven't had much of an issue. its reduced the crash rate about 80%
but anyhow, i have to get ready for school. I'll catch ya @JamesGifford

12:15 PM
@lazyPower I did grab them. I haven't noticed a difference (yet). have "fun" at school.

1:14 PM

A: How do I upgrade to the development release (aka. Ubuntu+1)?

AlaukikFrom 11.04 onwards when you boot the livecd and start installing it will give a option for upgrading it will automatically detect installed apps and installs the updated version of your apps also. Source

'lo, everyone!

1:30 PM
hello :)

2:14 PM
Anyone else getting this when they try to edit something?
been that way for about an hour, maybe two.

1 hour later…
3:31 PM
mac guy, but just bought a new pc and about to install ubuntu on her. I want to install ubuntu on a usb thumb but not the live cd. And I'm also hoping to do this wihtout having to burn a cd
lots of the info I find online varies. most of what I find is instruction for making a live cd
or for installing a live cd on a usb thumb

@JoshuaRobison so you want a full install on an USB stick?

exactly
ive got a 8gig stick
im thinking put the OS on the stick and use my comp HD for documents etc

@JoshuaRobison what is the problem with a Live version?

if I asked what the difference between the full version and the live version was, then that would probably be your answer
from what I gather, the live version is not the full version. you can not save your preferences or data etc...

@JoshuaRobison I'm not exactly the Live OS pro but as far as I know not much
@JoshuaRobison oh well you can on an USB stick
of course on a Live CD persistence is not really possible
but just because the medium is a CD and not a pen drive

3:37 PM
Hi all :)

@Takkat hello :)

@OctavianDamiean afaik when ou prepare a live USB that is big enough there is some space reserved for individual settings

@Takkat yup thats what I meant :)

However the better way would be to make a real install on USB and boot from there

@Takkat thats exactly what I want to do
but looks like i have to make that real install during a live session

3:40 PM
why don't you want to burn a CD?

one reason only
im lazy

@JoshuaRobison oh lol

lol good reason

if there is another way or if I dont have to ... why do I need to

if you had 2 pens?

3:41 PM
@JoshuaRobison there is none except of another usb stick

if I put the live cd on the usb stick then can I install ubuntu on the same stick?

@JoshuaRobison no
you need either two USB sticks or one USB stick and a CD

@JoshuaRobison you'd need 2 boot partitions on the stick- that's complicated

actually a lot of mac people are putting a small like 80mb install of debian on their usb and then booting up from that and doing an internet install

@JoshuaRobison well if you partition it well it might work but I have never tried anything like that

3:43 PM
never done that either - too lazy ;)

the easiest solution is like I said either two USB sticks or a CD

or HD :P

@Takkat well yea or that :D

@JoshuaRobison: were you able to boot Ubuntu from a live USB?
I mean the EFI thing with PPC solved?

@Takkat not solved

3:47 PM
too bad. I heard the Linux Kernel and Grub are EFI capable. Don't know about PPC though

its not fair that pc users get all these nice little usb creator software and ppc has got nothing

I always wonder why people keep buying that stuff. They sure have to be slightly masochistic. I mean that bitten into apple stuff.

@OctavianDamiean oh, a second hand PPC wouldn't be too bad a thing. Nice to gather a lot of experiences :P (could be bad experiences included)

@Takkat well the only nice thing would be to gather information on how to solve just those problems other than that I don't see the benefit

was a bit sarkasm involved

3:51 PM
I see :D

@JoshuaRobison I understood that the PPC architecture is already a bit history

ive been using apple since I was 14. it was my first comp. Linux has come a long way actually. when I was 14 mac was it. linux has done a lot of catching up. Since I stopped using most of my commercial software and moved onto open software the need for my mac has also kind of dwindeled
@Takkat it is exactly that it is history that is why linux is great for it
ppc has totally been dropped by apple
which has left people like me in the dust
no support for ppc anymore even though more than have their user base still uses them

Apple should totally be dropped by the world but it just doesn't happen for a reason I don't understand.

@JoshuaRobison ack there were times when you had no alternatives to a Mac, really. is glad these times have changed

that is what I love about linux is that there are great distros that can run like a titan on even the weakest of machines
4

3:54 PM
nice said :)

welp im gonna have to get off my lazy asdfdsaf and make a cd it looks like

I think running Ubuntu on a PPC would be a very great idea - hope you get it running!

@JoshuaRobison this would be the easiest solution yes

@Takkat i hope so too. some people have got it working it is just that my ppc CD drive is busted
other wise i would have had no problem
the linux world has great stuff to offer the ppc world rght now since we got dropped

3:57 PM
Even if it had not been dropped :)

the Linux world in general has great stuff to offer. ;)

FLOSS \o/

@OctavianDamiean never took me longer than just now to find the backslash :D

@Takkat hehe

4:01 PM
@OctavianDamiean the reason i can not trust linux yet is because of it's hobbyist nature

Booo

I need more garantee that all my hardware is gonna run
when I buy a printer I cant be worried about it

@JoshuaRobison well that is actually one of the most untrue statements ever

but by nature open source means that people are doing this in their spare time

Linux is the state of the art when it comes to servers and serious stuff

4:02 PM
@JoshuaRobison There are some problems, but looking closer i feel there are fewer than they are in Windows or Mac

@OctavianDamiean hrmm that s true

Try running non-Apple hardware on a Mac - outch
Or try running old hardware with 7

@Takkat i actually see what you mean takkat and you are right that support for hardware is about equal right about now (im speaking from complete ignorance) but this wasnt always the case

more and more public sector bodies transition to Linux lately (in Austria at least)

@JoshuaRobison yeah true, but times changed a lot!

4:05 PM
im a simple user mac guy and have always heard of linux but would have never taken it seriously if it hadnt reached the height that it has today. I feel really safe about it actually.
a lot of people have really worked hard and made linux a great thing i think. and that community support is really kind of what makes me feel like I can trust it.

@JoshuaRobison yea the big difference was that OS X and Windows had big companies behind them with lots of money to push them, Ubuntu has too and apparently that is the key

@OctavianDamiean cool

4:14 PM
what's with all the hypothetical questions?
5

another thing is like, the majority of developers are developing for windows or mac which puts most of the cool stuff UNFORTUNATELY on that hardware

@JorgeCastro that was what I was thinking right now
we're getting flooded by them at the moment

like every year my wife makes new years cards and she has to use this special software that comes in her favorite magazine.... and its windows software

@JoshuaRobison well for such stuff there are open source alternatives for Linux too it is just up to your wife to try them ;)

right but that is like saying there is an alternative for xmass

4:16 PM
an area which needs love is CAD
that'd be a major step forward for Linux

not to mention that when you surf the net you see links to download software right but never any links to download and install linux software (almost never)
I do like the way that have installs set up lately though with gui interfaces to search kind of like an app store kind of idea

@JoshuaRobison well yea as sadly the majority of computer users around the world still are Windows users

and if only they were linux users the programming community would switch as well... possibly

@JorgeCastro I think we need a banner or something that reminds people those kinds of questions are inappropriate for the site (and points them nicely toward the right direction)

except ... i don't see how money can be made with free software yet.
adds?

4:19 PM
@JoshuaRobison support

@JoshuaRobison services

consulting

I've done it, providing support for ubuntu in my country for money
(it's my business - just right now I need to advertise :P)

As @JorgeCastro said, "Whats up with all the hypothetical questions?"?!!?
This is nuts.

probably the influx of new users from global jam
shrug, vote to close and move on!

4:25 PM
the things that's cool about the intel macs right now is that you can run windows mac and linux on them which means you dont have to worry about not being able to support something

True. * shrug *

yay burning my first iso now :D
im feeling the computer nerd rush

meta.askubuntu.com/questions/1089/… - something tells me people are downvoting here out of boredome :)

its slightly different from the rush you get playing a sport etc. but ... its there

lol I know the rush :P

4:32 PM
or that might just be my heart fluttering from sitting in this chair too long O_o
great finished. time to boot up
see you on the other side

@JoshuaRobison Cya man. Good luck.

goes for some inline skating :D

the... other side?
askubuntu.com/posts/33140/timeline - take a look at my edit :P
(especially the reason)

If you weren't my elder, I'd probably be spewing something that isn't very polite. :P (joking)

5:07 PM
@JamesGifford keep em coming!
I am out of accepts for you today though

Q: Is "Ubuntu Tweak" considered to be a "safe" program?

RobIs "Ubuntu Tweak" considered to be a safe program for us on my 10.10 OS. Also I was concerned whether or not it was safe to delete all the programs that show up in the "Package Cleanup" option?

i wish someone could review ubuntu tweak like it was done for automatix a few years ago

@JorgeCastro need to wrap up this school paper and then I'll get back at it. :)
it'll be a few hours... Might not get to it today. :(

it's ok I am out of votes for you anyway!
you get +2 rep for each one right?

ok got the live cd booted up but after going through all that work im beginning to think i cant do what I am attempting to do
I just want to use my usb stick as if it were an internal hd and make a clean install of ubuntu on it right from that ubuntu installer

@JorgeCastro Yeah, that's right. +2 for each accepted one.

5:20 PM
but will that actually work?

@JoshuaRobison yeah that works
one sec we have instructions

this one got me confused

5:26 PM
@JoshuaRobison Pretty sure you can update it as well, as long as you have enough space.

@JoshuaRobison just keep in mind that the read/write(especially write) speed is not that amazing on USB sticks

great. thanks you guys

you're welcome. :)

@JorgeCastro shouldn't that How to install Ubuntu to a USB key be kept more generic? I mean right now the answer tells you to get the latest nightly

@OctavianDamiean yeah it would be nice to have it updated
(hint) :)

5:31 PM
@JorgeCastro I know I can do it, just wanted to get your opinion. :)

Rather mature for a teen, like I was at your age ^^
makes me proud to see mature teenagers in this dying world

makes me proud to be one. I think I can thank Ubuntu for helping out with that. I got hooked on tweaking my system, and that kept me off the streets/out of trouble. (seriously)

(and reminds me of my days at our local college just last year launches into a rant about what my friend from Africa and I used to discuss about how poorly developed the minds of our local youth are, and how they need to think and act more maturely)

nice :)
I grew up away from the streets and trouble too
wasn't cool missing out on a million friends, but it sure pays off

@RolandTaylor what does that word mean? friends? Whats that? Is it a package?

5:40 PM
lols to self - @MarcoCeppi and @JorgeCastro must be reading this chat and going O.o - Roland Taylor - is... being... mature D:! - must... drink... coffee
@OctavianDamiean it's an ancient African word that means Fedora
a kind of hat

@RolandTaylor what are these friends of which you speak??

Idk, must have been a typo O.o

that's a freakish typo...

I want to convert someone who is into audio stuff to Ubuntu, lets see if I have the tools for it. :P

Sk8erHi all. I have a problem with Docky. When i open some foldier (foe exaple home directory) Docky always show name "Диск C". This is Wine directory, in english it's "Drice C". See: How can i do, that in Docky shows name of oppened foldier?

@OctavianDamiean you wont.. everyone who is serious about their sound is using a real serious operating system mac os x! :D

aha! soviet russia (I love russians btw)

@RolandTaylor Red Alert 1?

@Alvar grammar/spelling alert

@RolandTaylor right....
@RolandTaylor Whoot?!

jesus christ there is tons of Audio stuff in Ubuntu studio
man I really have to start doing some web development again, the world definitely needs another website without real use :D
oh yea if someone is into web development and needs a sandbox (an extended one not jsfiddle) then have a look at kodingen.com

@RolandTaylor It got really bad after last weeks Unity update for some reason. Hence why I made the switch to Chromium.
@OctavianDamiean I looked at that. Looks awesome.

@JamesGifford heh I couldn't get more than 6 of them accepted
then it told me I was out of accepts for you
there are 15 pending

im trying to run it via the livecd i might add

@JorgeCastro @JamesGifford There are 0 pending :)

@MarcoCeppi yay. :) @JorgeCastro

welcomes @MarcoCeppi

can kvm be run during the live cd session?

6:35 PM
@JoshuaRobison No idea. That's something you could ask on the main site though.

i dont have enough rep to comment on that answer

@JoshuaRobison no you can ask that as a question. ;)

@JorgeCastro you appear to be mistaken,
I AM THE INTERWEBZ!

@JoshuaRobison I don't think so, I think you need to do it from an existing ubuntu install

music starts to play - epic battle pending (after approved by epic battle release team)
correct, a livecd is not exactly kvm friendly ;)
a live usb - maybe - if you manage to get local storage working :P

6:45 PM
but that defeats the whole purpose ... arggg

yeah it's definately annoying to make a USB key with persistance
it would be nice if wubi had an option for that "Make me a pocket version of Ubuntu"

is there a way to do the install without the gui installer?

@JorgeCastro why not try to just install Ubuntu on your USB?

@JoshuaRobison can you boot from USB? I mean from BIOS?

6:50 PM
@Takkat when i start the installer i get to the syncing the time and then get the the keyboard window and select my keyboard and then press "forward" and it just hangs
boot from bios? im booted from live cd. do you mean just boot up into the pc bios? and then what?

@JoshuaRobison installing an OS to a stick only makes sense if your BIOS is capable of booting from there

my computer is very new. I think it can. when i startup it asks me to press f12 to select startup disk
i then get a long list of options to boot into.

it should, most do it these days now

@JoshuaRobison what Ubuntu version do you try to install?

linux mint version 9 ;P

6:55 PM
don't now much on the mint installer :/

Mint installers more or less the same as Ubuntus. Similar options.
goes back to work so he can get back to tag wikis
(So in other words, it's almost exactly the same)

right. just wish kvm would work. if not then a terminal installer would be nice

@JoshuaRobison for Ubuntu that would be the Alternate CD.

7:27 PM
im now trying this. if this works i waisted a dvd pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3
