Oli
12:11 AM
Well that was less painful than I had feared it might be.

Oh, good.

Oli
12:39 AM
And I'm finally done. Chrome is a paranoid POS when it comes to userscripts.

12:54 AM
We're ready to begin?

Oli
Yeah just testing my Chrome edits haven't broken Firefox.

1:10 AM
Don't forget that a lot of Ubuntu users use Opera :)
...but if it works in Chrome and FF, it probably works in Opera.

Oli
I'm not spending another hour catering to another browser. Not at this stage. Opera can burn in a fire. I've no idea why people choose a closed source browser when the open alternatives are as good as they are.

Well... a lot of people use IE and that's far more worthy of a fire-burning.
That's closed-source at its worst.

Oli
Yeah but they don't go out of their way to choose that. Most just stick with what they're given.

Oli
1:29 AM
Right, email sent @GeorgeEdison

K. Test in progress!
@Oli I sent a suggestion... kind of minor though.

1:44 AM
@Oli cheers to that!

Q: Recover files in Ubuntu from USB stick

JonI have Ubuntu 11.04 running from a USB stick. I think I ran some updates in terminal and now it has a kernel panic during boot up. Is there a way I can get hold of files I saved when Ubuntu was working? I just managed to watch the booot screen and it looks as if there are some errors saying ther...

can I get another upvote on users solution plz?

@Oli: I found a much more serious bug and sent another email :)

Oli
@GeorgeEdison Yeah that's Chrome's fault for making me import another copy of Jquery. Working on it now.

@BrunoPereira i'd like to see more data in the post rather than a link thats probably going to 404 at some point in the future.

@Oli You don't need jQuery at all on Chrome.
The site always has jQuery loaded by time your UserScript is injected.

Beautiful
+1'd

@Oli oh wow, this is fun!

Oli
@GeorgeEdison But how does it communicate with it? unsafeWindow doesn't exist and window seems to block it (based on my earlier hackings)
That's what I was originally doing for Firefox - just pulling in the SE copy of Ask Ubuntu by reference to $
It's weird that it only affects flag. Perhaps I should target that rather than trying to rewrite it all over again

Q: My laptop freezes after enabling extra visual effects

ok compI recently updated everything to the latest version through Ubuntu tweak. My compiz PPA is also enabled in Ubuntu tweak. After the update, the extra visual effects are all gone. When I enter Compiz, I try to enabled the effects & the others settings, Compiz suddenly close automatically. Th...

Oli
My bad. Flag, Close, Mod all die. Anywhere that's loading up a big jibbery-box

2:02 AM
^ we can close that one

@GeorgeEdison what version of qtcreator are you using in Ubuntu 11.10?

Oli
2:15 AM
@GeorgeEdison almost fixed it (flagging etc work but the textarea is chucking out an error, probably something to do with me loading another jQ)

2:34 AM
@Oli scores should be updated every 30 mins right? Is that part not functional yet?

Oli
@BrunoPereira They should be updating unless there's a horrible bug in the code. I'll run a manual update now and see what happens.

@oli let me know when done

Oli
It's running now.

did not do it automatic, did the work now
this is solved, can we get a upvote on any of the answers to see it gone for ever? askubuntu.com/questions/62086/…

Can you answer this? Desktop background won't change until restart http://askubuntu.com/questions/82581/desktop-background-wont-change-until-restart #desktop

2:40 AM
hide yo kids, hide yo wife, @MarcoCeppi is here

2:52 AM
@lazyPower I'm using Qt Creator on Windows these days :) I forget the version.
@Oli Why do you need jQuery?
The Ask Ubuntu pages already embed jQuery.

You've earned the "Revival" badge for Recover files in Ubuntu from USB stick. See your profile. More badges! Thx @Oli :)

Oli
Mainly because I'm lazy and don't fancy coding my own JSONP decoder.
Yeah, as I said, I can't talk to the page's copy of jQ from a userscript in Chrome. You can in Firefox - that worked great.

JSONP isn't 'decoded'... it's actual JavaScript source.

right, JSON is an actual javascript object by definition

Oli
@GeorgeEdison Yeah I really just mean writing the garb around it. I guess it wouldn't be too hard but I think I'm almost there fixing things. Firefox is the only problem now so I'm just going to add a shortcut back in to just use the direct copy of jQ

2:58 AM
haha, hack on top of a hack. hi5 Oli. i do that too then regret it five months down the road when i re-visit the source.

Oli
@lazyPower It's actually not quite as bad as it sounds. It also speeds things up for FF users so that's nice.

@Oli leader-board / My open questions failed to update again

Oli
@BrunoPereira Yeah I've just found a stupid error in my cron entry. Fixed that now and fired off another manual update.

@BrunoPereira This is in response to your comment on my vbeinfo question...how can I switch to a tty and try that out? I won't be able to test it right now since my desktop is back in my dorm room, but I'd like to know so I can try it.

Q: Is there a way to save the output of vbeinfo?

WarriorIng64I'm trying to correct some GRUB2 and Plymouth display problems in 11.10 as part of an ongoing saga. I'm going to run the vbeinfo command to check supported display modes, but unfortunately from what I can tell this command can only be run from GRUB2, and hence the output is only visible while the...

nvm, found my answer:

Q: What is a tty, and how do I access a tty?

jrgI keep hearing about these things known as tty's. what are they how can I access them what do they do?

Heh, just tried it on my laptop...I've been using Ubuntu since 9.10 and never even knew about these things :)

3:53 AM
@lazyPower No Fixes?
Why is this room so quiet

No clue.

@AmithKK Everyone must still be sleeping off all that tryptophan from the Thanksgiving turkey...

Hey @GeorgeEdison
I wonder how Turkey tastes
Ah, now I have to get 7 euros for just a ubuntu pen?
No Fair

@AmithKK You haven't had turkey? I'd say it's like chicken, but drier.

@WarriorIng64 Is Thanksgiving a Religion or state based festival?
I'm Hindu and I live in India

4:06 AM
Ah, okay...well, Wikipedia seems to have a general guide to Thanksgiving (I'm from the USA).
It's not really a religious holiday, but more national...something having to do with the pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock and surviving in the New World with the help of the Native Americans or something like that
Wow...I just realized how much I've forgotten from primary school 0.o
Actually, this is more specific to the USA's version of Thanksgiving: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_(United_States))

Yes, Thanksgiving is a religious holiday.

How do i change the time zone after installation of ubuntu server
@GeorgeEdison Cool

@AmithKK sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata

@GeorgeEdison You know C++?

@GeorgeEdison Is it? Aside from the pilgrims, I didn't see any connection to a particular religion

4:10 AM
@AmithKK Yes.
@WarriorIng64 The pilgrims instituted it.

@GeorgeEdison There is no India

@AmithKK There isn't?
It was on the map last time I checked :P

@GeorgeEdison On the time zone list

No clue.

4:12 AM
@GeorgeEdison Do you know Embedded C?
(You do own an arduino.. so you would)

@AmithKK Not necessarily... the Arduino executes machine code so it doesn't matter what language I write "sketches" in as long as the output is binary machine code.

heh

...and the compiler that Arduino encourages everyone to use is extremely similar to C++.
Not C.

Did you see my LCDCAM
@GeorgeEdison Noted!
are you there?

Yes.
I tried something.

4:25 AM
saw the display?
no, unicode wont work fully

Oli
I'm trying to read you Macbeth but it seems like the camera is mounted on the back of a spider. One who doesn't want to be in the same room any longer.

@Oli LOL :) Im mounting it

It isn't working.
I'm entering text, but it won't display.

mount complete... script resumed

Aha!
Now it works. Neat!

4:41 AM
Both @GeorgeEdison and @MarcoCeppi can replicate this

What happens when more text than can be displayed is received?

It gets cut
I could make it autoscroll
ut that would be complicated
Considering the somewhat small memory on the atmega
Python would have to query the memory and send the text b2b

It didn't like my carriage return and linefeed :)

It autowraps

Lol.. that didn't work.

4:45 AM
and the good part is, you can write another client side program using the var ?textToShow=<input>
@GeorgeEdison You use the dollar system?

The "dollar" system?
Are you asking what currency we use?

yes

We use the Canadian dollar.

nice
How long are you going to be about here
Im shutting down the LCDDISP :)
@MarcoCeppi Around?

5:04 AM
Okay.

How can I make all user's have a /var/www/<username> dir(automatically)

Oli
@GeorgeEdison Well you were right. Rather than doing real work as I'm supposed to I've been refactoring and refactoring my userscript code and now it's shorter than the original, doesn't need an extra copy of jquery, doesn't need hacks or special GM garbage... and seems to just work.

Hi @MarcoCeppi
6 mins ago, by Amith KK
How can I make all user's have a /var/www/<username> dir(automatically)

@AmithKK You'll need to edit the adduser/useradd function

@MarcoCeppi And can I make it do so that other users cant access another users dir?

Oli
5:13 AM
I suppose you could write a FUSE filesystem that knows where to look.

@Oli I can write a what?

Oli
A FUSE filesystem. It's a quick way to make a fake filesystem that behaves in a custom way on top of an existing, standard one, using whatever language you like.

Hey, On a VM on 192.168.1.3. I do have to disable the Webserver and ssh server on the host?

@Oli Great.

My server install is booting!
I need help
What should i set in the Vbox port config

5:30 AM
Port config?
What are you trying to do?

Set up a SSH and HTTP server

@MarcoCeppi: Handy testing tool --------^

@GeorgeEdison Is that windows 8?

What should be "Host IP" and "Guest IP"

5:32 AM
Where are those settings?

Port forward in Vbox
network settings

Then I believe you can just leave the IP settings blank.

@GeorgeEdison Do you have time to help me set the internals up (If you are willing)

Bounty offered: Is there a way to save the output of vbeinfo? http://askubuntu.com/questions/67236/is-there-a-way-to-save-the-output-of-vbeinfo #grub2

@AmithKK Set what up?

5:38 AM
@GeorgeEdison The useradd... And permissions (Via SSH :))

For... an Apache setup?

Yes
How can i find out the IP?

Is this a virtual machine?

yes

Then it doesn't have an external IP address.
The only way to access services on it is to map guest ports to host ports.

5:44 AM
Done
so, this would work: ssh amith@localhost -p 7070

Where are you entering that?
In the host or guest?

On the host
and seems that the vm cannot access the outside network

Can the host ping any external IP addresses?

@GeorgeEdison yes

Then what's the problem?

5:47 AM
the guest cannot access any external ip's

Example port configuration -----^

@GeorgeEdison Did that

What that does is map the guest port 22 (ssh) to the host port 8022.
Is the guest's network interface up?

I already binded 22 to 7070
@GeorgeEdison Huh?

@AmithKK Is the guest connected to VirtualBox's network adapter?

5:50 AM
@GeorgeEdison Yep, its NAT
(Soory I'm n00bish, Im very new to getting a server working on a VM)

So can you ping your host machine's external IP address?

No connect:Network is unreachable

Ah, so your guest can't see the network.

yes

Well that's the problem then.

5:53 AM
@GeorgeEdison Fix??

Try the ifconfig command.

Oh yeah, I remember, I did not do a DHCP config during install
@GeorgeEdison there is lo

Is there eth0?

no

I believe lo is the loopback interface.
@AmithKK Then that's the problem.
Does your VM have the X server packages installed?

5:56 AM
@GeorgeEdison I installed from the Server Disc

I'm not familiar with that... do you have a desktop environment?

@GeorgeEdison no
Where is @MarcoCeppi when you need him.
YES eth1 works!
Still fails

eth1...?

yep

Q: What's the next step in troubleshooting this wireless connection failure?

Brian DantI just installed Ubuntu 10.04.3 to dual-boot with Windows. I can connect to the Internet using a wired connection, but not through wireless. The first time I booted, the wireless notification bar said "Device not ready". The next time I booted, the wireless notification didn't show any availab...

7:14 AM
Hey guys. :)

Hello.

@AmithKK try going from NAT to bridged adapter mode
if that fails swap back to nat, but for whatever reason that worked for me once or twice. using bridged adapter, where nat was failing.

How do you get an apt url of a package?

Thanks.

A: How to disable notification from network-manager

jokerdinoGconf-editor lets you edit the network manager notifications. To alter these settings, install gconf-editor. / â–¸ apps â–¸ nm-applet â–¸ Check disable-connected-notifications and disable-disconnected-notifications settings.

I sound like a novice. (which I am :( ) :(

7:31 AM
@lazyPower Is there any solution to my wp prob?(and id you arent busy can you upgrade me to 3.3 beta)

@AmithKK have you changed your prettylinks/permalinks settings? try doing so to force a .htaccess update
get your links working before we break it with beta software :P
Interesting! Thanks for the update @GeorgeEdison (regarding the MinGW vs MS C++ headers)

@lazyPower No problem.
It's interesting to know.

well its always bugged me that certain headers are cool cross platform where as some are not. Posix systems seem to be very strict on what they include and where.

Yeah, so I guess the ideal scenario is that you're developing on a POSIX-compliant system and then just testing on others later.
...but 'ideal' != 'reality' :)

haha :) well i was using code supplied by the book vendor since my lab is to modify the simple hash table into a behemoth of added bells and whistles
it did not compute that the supplied source was not compiling, however since it was written in VS 2005, it makes sense that g++ hated it.

7:45 AM
@GeorgeEdison Your on Win8?

Win8 is the host OS.
And probably Ubuntu is the guest OS.

I wanted him to test something

@AmithKK Yes.
I have Ubuntu 11.10 in a VM.
...but it's powered down at the moment.

@GeorgeEdison Ok, look at this page in win8 amith.dasroot.net/?p=155
Do you see the ubuntu font?

@AmithKK you can over-come that using Google Web Fonts
the Ubuntu font is offered, all you need to do is link in their distributed CSS file

7:49 AM
@AmithKK Yes.

@lazyPower That's what Im doing now :)

8:26 AM
Wow , Im still having Microsoft Train Simulator!

Q: Segmentation Fault and other issues after switching to XFCE

Amith KKAfter switching to XFCE.. Many apps are segfaulting including VirtualBox and MonkeyStudio. Apps like Minitube give this warning Creating accessible with different object than the original interface! Is there any fix?

Awesome answer! Give FossFreedom an Upvote!

@lazyPower Works!

Not, completely
now it says desination unreachable

what are you going on about?

8:37 AM
The vbox server

Oh ok :)

amith@amith-desktop:~$ ssh amith@empower
ssh: connect to host empower port 22: No route to host
Bridged works..
@lazyPower can you ssh to my real comp?

as opposed to your fictional comp? sure

8:52 AM
@lazyPower Does ssh'ing to port 7070

nope

@lazyPower Hmm
@lazyPower Now?

hey guess what @AmithKK

I like apple juice

9:01 AM
Awesome!

Q: I can't enable extra effects in Ubuntu 10.10. Please help?

jasoncruz98I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Ubuntu 11.10 to use an older version of Compiz. On Ubuntu 11.10, Compiz was enabled by default and I didn't need to use any graphics driver to enjoy the effects. All I had to do was install CompizConfig Settings Manager and enable those extra effects. That was C...

@jasoncruz98 did the restricted drivers manager not find the card?

user26781
@lazyPower all I got from the additional drivers was the same driver I installed on Ubuntu 11.10

sounds to me like it defaulted to the intel integrated gfx driver, which is a 'failsafe' type display module. You need to get whatever the restricted-drivers-manager detects your card as. That will add OpenGL support and allow you to enable desktop effects.
Interesting. Not sure whats going on then, unless there are some patches that were made to 11.10 that have not been backported to 10.10

user26781
I didn't want to download it because I am scared it would go to 2D, which I am already using now.

user26781
9:13 AM
@lazyPower should I install the driver anyway?

if 10.10 is using 2d only, you havent lost anything by swapping the display module...
worst case scenario, the video fails to work and you spend a few hours scouring resources and curse my name for suggesting you try it

user26781
I didn't install the driver yet.

user26781
In Ubuntu 11.10 it went to 2D after installing the driver.

I know some people who swear by the RDM (like myself) and I know some people that have had nothing but trouble with it
so ymmv

user26781
Would the same thing happen in Ubuntu 10.10?

9:16 AM
its quite possible, yes

It might not, due to Linux 3.0

user26781
3.0?

Gnome 3.0
11.10 was a major update to the backend GTK/Gnome libs

user26781
Thanks for your help, guys. I am going to try installing the graphics driver

user26781
9:31 AM
@lazyPower sorry I just couldn't stand waiting for so long.

user26781
my bandwidth is so slow

user26781
I even checked the jockey.log file and it didn't have any progress

user26781
@lazyPower How do I solve my problem, please? I need help

@jasoncruz98 if the driver is not installing i'm not sure what to tell you since thats square one for me. sorry thats not much help but I really dont know off the top of my head.
Chances are you'll have to wait until someone answers your question on the site.

Danger mouse commented something on his question.
