3:12 PM
does anyone have experience from StackOverflo?
stack Overflow?

@poka.nandor A bit, why?

I just got one of my question downvoted 2times and no comment
i don't care about the downvote
but I'd expect people to tell what's wrong with the question
so all i wanted to ask if that's common over there?

3:32 PM
@poka.nandor Very. What's the question?
Oh, @poka.nandor that question is completely off topic on Stack Overflow. Remember to always check a site's scope before posting.
You should delete it and ask instead on Super User. Stack Overflow is only for programming issues, not for general usage questions.
You should also add a screenshot showing the problem and mention the version of whatever mail app you're using.

I've thought that i might be off topic
but this is why the flagging and close voteing is for
@terdon thx for the insights though

Stack Overflow gets so many thousands of questions, they have very little patience for people who post and don't take the time to see if their question is on topic.
There's a lot of vitriol there.

I see
MAybe I got softened up here.... :D :D

@poka.nandor SO is not a friendly place. To some extent this comes with the kind of volume they get.

well I can imagine,yet sheer volume should not result in hostility

3:41 PM
That is one reason I think that a group of smaller sites would be a good idea. But I think the giant SO site is tied to SE's business model. So that is unlikely to change in any substantial way.

You think that was hostility? You have no idea...

@poka.nandor I don't think you understand the dynamics here.
And anyway, SO is not that bad. The net can get a lot nastier.
At least they'll answer your question, if you ask a sensible one.

I don't think that was hostile in any way I'M just not used to it

There are places where it is not uncommon for people to insult you are a response to asking a question.

@FaheemMitha what dynamics did i miss?

3:44 PM
@poka.nandor Ah. Well, imagine you are someone who regularly answers SO question. Let's say you are a high-rep answerer. And you presumably have your favorite tags.

anyway I deleted that post and look around elsewhere

Now, some tags on SO receive floods of questions every day. And many of them are poorly written, maybe unintelligible, maybe the poster isn't a native speaker.

@poka.nandor It would be on topic on Super User.

The natural reaction to this ongoing flood of posts is increasing impatience.
After all, the people answering aren't getting anything from it.
Except the satisfaction of helping people. And that can wear thin after a good long time spent dealing with morons.

@FaheemMitha I understand your point but wrint a comment takes like 1 minute maybe?

3:46 PM
I once posted a question asking for a script. I was downvoted 5 times, and then the question was closed.

@poka.nandor 1 minute x 100000000 posts = a lot of time
@FaheemMitha GIVE ME THA CODEZ!

I got the message and deleted the post. As it happens, one person left a helpful comment, and that helped me do what I wanted.

@FaheemMitha I teach univ. fresh men and correct test I see alot of BS on their test and yes patiente wear thin yet I don't give them low scores unless necessary

This all happened inside 1 hour I think. If I was Jon Skeet, people would probably have been more polite.
@poka.nandor Yes, but you work there. These people don't. That's an important distinction.
They aren't paid to put up with clueless users. They are typically doing it in their spare time, and probably have a lot else going on.

@FaheemMitha true that is..

3:49 PM
@terdon :-) My spelling isn't quite that bad...

I'm not offened by the downvotes and it is tru the quality must be kept

@poka.nandor having said that, I practically never downvote, but if I think a question has problems, I do post a comment.

i was just unprepared like mortals in WoW entering thorugh the portal.... :D

Which doesn't seem such a common thing to do, even on U&L. Which has a much friendlier atmosphere than SO. @terdon, do you concur?
@poka.nandor Are you new to SO?

in some sense yes

3:51 PM
ok

i've got work to do brb

@poka.nandor well, welcome to SE, anyway. I see you are quite new. Nice work on the Biology site.

@FaheemMitha I wish you would, as you know :)
And yes, of course we're friendlier than SO! Talk about damning with faint praise.

@terdon Yes, both you and Gilles disapprove. I know.
And maybe others, but Gilles made a point of it. He described it as anti-social, as I recall.
@terdon No criticism implied.
And I don't think SO is that bad. You just have to be careful not to push people's buttons.
And as with any community, once you have been around a bit and people know you, it gets easier.
If you are some random stranger off the street, they aren't going to throw their arms around you and invite you to have a drink.

@FaheemMitha I agree. I've gotten perfectly decent answers there, but I am now an experienced SE user and know how to post accordingly.

3:59 PM
@terdon well, I've learned not to ask for scripts. :-)

I'm back
@FaheemMitha thx I try my best.
