@chr
@Chris.. Well.. I cant fully agree on it..
if the science degrees covered many aspects of human biology then it would be fine
Doctors in old times were researchers
not to old a time
i mean last century
@Chris.. if you generally spend time in the lab then we can have a chat about your work etc
or other science discussions
we can talk in gmail chat if you like

@WYSIWYG But I think today this is the case. There are clearly doctors who are capable of doing science in the lab - but most are not. And how should they? They are trained in a completely different field. I will not go into a hospital and pretend to make good surgery...

@Chris well thats true.. that is why i said i dont "fully" agree with you ;)
but what if i wish to learn surgery just like that

@WYSIWYG Then you have to study medicine and everything is fine.

@chri
@Chris.. but then i cant do research

I would say you have to make a decision on some point. When you want to do research, I don't see the point to go though medical school, which is pretty hard. You certainly lern a lot of things there, but most of them are not really useful for doing research work. If you want to do that, you are probably better suited as a biochemist.
Athough studying medine has the positive side that you can still work as a doctor when research is not turning out nicely.

12:20 PM
hmm.. well.. I just hope I finish my PhD soon :P

what did you study?

Engineering
bio-engineering/bio-technology
4-years UG and then PhD

This is certainly also useful.
And PhD is hard work, I know

its not about hard.. i like it if the problem is hard..
but all I had worked on tilll now didnt turn up that well
the plan was good on paper.. the glass ditched me
:D

This is also one of the nice things on bio.sx. You can do research on new topics and find out stuff

12:23 PM
yeah.. i like that part

thats not nice - although I also worked for 1.5 years for nothing

but in the 5th year of PhD i should not deviate much

until we decided to change the strategy and things turned nicer

i have 1 year to finish and look for a good postdoc
well.. there was not much of a "we" on my side.. and well I have 3 advisors with different backgrounds :P

which is a lot of work for a year - writing a thesis, publish something...

12:26 PM
so this is what i say to a young PhD newbie- if you want to do synthetic biology then join a huge lab
with lot of technical staff
well.. thesis writing is not much of a job..

fortunately i seem to be more lucky with supervisor

perhaps a week's work

if you can write all the stuff together so fast - perfect

but i am in a back to square1 situation
find an objective. but i am not going to do any experiments anymore.. just modeling
Paper is what I need desperately :P Like a ravenous wolf :D
but all said and done.. i learnt a lot in these 4 years

And there is no chance that somebody helps you becoming a co-author?

12:30 PM
well.. yeah... i help my friends with some stuff.. for which i can become a co-author
but paper in my work is what i really need
and I dont know when my friend will finish other experiments

I've got to go for a few minutes...

no prob.. I might leave in some time.. or perhaps not
i need a beer company

12:45 PM
@Chris.. you can ping me on my gmail if you want..
I'll mail/chat back
i find it more convenient for a one to one conversation
