blah.
At least now y'all are closer to your privs.

@DoorHandle BaconBot = ?
@J.Musser You used all your votes in under an hour???

@Shokhet yup

@J.Musser I am in awe.

@Shokhet y?

@J.Musser Um.....because you used up all you votes in under an hour?

12:35 AM
@Shokhet about mins, actually.
@Shokhet at least I still have 9 meta votes.

@J.Musser Wow. Not bad!!

@Shokhet just in case something new comes up.
I need to be more active on meta.

Yeah. I'm starting to realize how important Meta is to a new private beta; especially for one as off-the-wall as this one ;-)

Hiya @Vogel612

Hiya @J.Musser ...

12:44 AM
Hey @Vogel612; what's doing?

I see you did approve that single word edit on my answer about firefighting in my mouth...
I took the liberty to bindingly reject that edit

@Vogel612 I think single word edits can be good.

@Vogel612 Which one? .....I've approved a few edits by now, hard to keep track of them all
@J.Musser in certain instances

@Shokhet In most instances I find them useful.

@Vogel612 "you" = Shokhet, or @J.Musser

12:46 AM
@Shokhet j. He also replied already :)

@J.Musser What about this one? (I approved only so as not to discourage editing)
@Vogel612 Oh; got it. Was confused, am no longer :)

@Shokhet That's a completely superfluous edit and should be rejected IMO
Changing How to to How do I is unnecessary

@Vogel612 As I said, I would've rejected, but didn't only because I didn't want to discourage editing in general. @abbyhairboat agrees with you

@Shokhet I make those edits on GL all the time. They improve readability.
They aren't a problem unless they begin flooding the review queues.

@J.Musser I actually prefer the "How to" title; it suggests what an answer would say

12:49 AM
I like titles to be actual questions.
Not that it matters though - it's a personal opinion.

@J.Musser See linked comment above; abby doesn't think that there is a "correct" way to title questions, so long as the intent is clear

Not that it matters though - it's a personal opinion.

True that

If it's an issue for you, bring it up in meta.

I don't really care -- so long as the title is clear.
I generally avoid editing others' titles, unless there's a real problem with it
Like lack of clarity or something

12:58 AM
@Shokhet When I have editing privs, I edit every question I answer, for the Illuminator badge.

;)

@Shokhet I do have only 181/500 or so towards the badge on my top site.

@J.Musser How'd you count that? Is there a SEDE query for that? ( or did you just count by hand? :P )
AFAIK there's no official counter, the way there is for Copy Editor and Reviewer badges

@Shokhet yeah, there's a sede q for it.

@J.Musser Nice. I'm gonna calculate that for my top site; I'm curious now
Only 11!?!? .....that's a problem that needs fixing. NOW!

1:05 AM
@Shokhet see, my method is useful.

@J.Musser yeah, lol

What is your top site? (I'm lazy)

Mi Yodeya (Judaism)
I'm a shochet, after all ;-)

ah.
My new meta post - I wonder if anyone is going to have any thoughts.

Guessing from the tree icon.....Gardening is your's?

1:07 AM
@Shokhet yes.
@Shokhet I think I answered a question of yours there, too.

Tip: @Shokhet you can also check the network profile's reputation tab

@J.Musser I only asked one.....it's very possible
@J.Musser Yes, you did.

Anyways I'll be heading for sleep now..

@Vogel612 I know; I'm just lazy
@Vogel612 Gnight!

@Vogel612 ttyl!
@Shokhet That makes two of us.

1:09 AM
@J.Musser Although I still haven't done it (your answer to my gardening question) yet.
@J.Musser Yup
I figure I'll accept this answer now, even though I haven't actually done anything yet, in case I do it and forget to come back here later. Thank you for your detailed answer! — Shokhet Oct 12 at 5:19

Q: Graduated design for lifehacks.stackexchange.com. Ideas?

J. MusserIt's never too soon to start thinking about our graduated site design. Be creative. There are a lot of ways we could go. What do you think would best fit this site? What would be a good logo? What would make a good overall theme? What should the voting arrows look like? What should the 404 page...

likely someone thinking it's too early :P

^^necessary question.
@ZachSaucier Never too early.

1:21 AM
I am fine with the question and answers, wasn't me
just not going to upvote it because I don't think it's the most important thing we can do right now

@J.Musser Sorry, but that's not going to be a useful question.
The site design is decided by Stack Exchange designers, and we get no input.
(Aside from the feedback stage after the design is created.)

@MacGyver Thanks, feed

(Oh, also, by the way, I wasn't the downvoter either.)

@Doorknob冰 Yes we do.

@J.Musser That's old. Very, very old. Most of it doesn't apply anymore.
There's a new version on MSE; let me find it...

@Doorknob冰 they really should update it
it's not like it's very hard to do

@Doorknob冰 Hey, I was going to say that!

Q: The Real Essential Questions of Every Beta

AsheeshRThe blog post Seven Essential Meta Questions of Every Beta gets linked to prominently from every beta's meta. However, this blog post is somewhat inaccurate and misdirects new users. In almost every beta, the site design question, for example, gets asked and undergoes a fair bit of discussion eve...

@ZachSaucier See my profile "about me" section. :P
And @hichris is about to say something now, isn't he...

@Doorknob冰 link-only....
@Doorknob冰 Yes.

Q: Design ideas for gardening.stackexchange.com

Tea DrinkerGardening may be some way off graduating from beta but it won't hurt to start thinking about design ideas. While we're still in beta our background theme is the generic "sketchy" design consisting mostly of blue graph paper. When we graduate we'll get a design all of our own. It'll be so much bet...

@Doorknob冰 I knew what it was, was wondering why

@ZachSaucier I think he just wants to be wintery.

1:27 AM
@ZachSaucier Yes, I explained that in my profile

Because it's hard for a Doorknob to be related to winter.

ah, frozen doorknob

@J.Musser That was a few years ago, though. Things have changed since then.

@Doorknob冰 true.

shouldn't the character be in front of your name then? I suppose it would make pinging harder...

1:28 AM
@ZachSaucier Yeah, I still want @Doorknob to work.
Just like last year, when I was Doorknob of Snow

@Doorknob冰 Yeah, no one can ping my sock.

@Shokhet +1
BTW, @Shokhet do you eat chicken a lot?

@Mooseman Yes, but only because that's what they serve in school. I've only ever eaten one chicken that I've killed myself.....I haven't done many, because I don't get many opportunities to practice.
And I can't practice w/o supervision

@KhanPower I killed it because it made no sense. It used to be on this question about reading.

Check out the new answer to that question ;-)

@Shokhet haha alright

2:16 AM
Someone with 500 rep (esp @Mooseman) approve lifehacks.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/288 ? ....I have a comment that I wrote to the editor; can't post it until the edit goes thru
I mean, I could post it, but the editor probably wouldn't get it.

what do you guys think of this meta question? I have it in a gist so it can be nearer to its best form before posting: gist.github.com/ZachSaucier/e3ca98b4db126fbf664f

@ZachSaucier I just skimmed it....I think we should wait until meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/questions/8/what-is-a-lifehack is clarified

mind reading through it in more detail?

@ZachSaucier Sure, will take a while, though

I mean for my focus to be on closing/requiring improvement for unclear/too broad reasons
if the part about scope is mostly off topic from that I don't mind making the emphasis smaller

2:22 AM
Tip for you, @ZachSaucier: You can post the Q and A at the same time, by hitting this checkbox

yes, I know :)

All right, just checking :)

I have like 15k total rep, I should hope all users with that much know that by now :P

No harm in telling you

I know, ty

2:23 AM
@ZachSaucier I hope so too :)

@ZachSaucier I totally agree with you, I was thinking the same thing. This site has a lot of little unresearched answers and questions. This needs to be fixed 1+

like I said, I'd love feedback, particularly if I should take out most the part about the scope
also note that the name of the questions will show in the meta version, not just the url

"questions being asked in hopes for reputation" .....do you really think that's the case? ....I don't think we should really care about rep at this point; it's a private beta site, and we're trying to figure out what's going on
@ZachSaucier I know that, ty ;-)
@Shokhet I certainly don't care about rep here
@ZachSaucier Re "We also need to come up with more clear off topic close reasons." ....I totally agree; I just dk if SE staff is up to doing that this early in the game. Maybe we should ask on Meta?

@Shokhet the staff doesn't want a direct question asking for a list of close reasons, they want it to be decided naturally by other meta questions and such, but they do want us thinking and discussing it for sure
@Shokhet I do think several users are
I can list them if you'd so like :P

@ZachSaucier That's certainly unfortunate. You can't even display the rep yet (I think), as the site is still private.

2:29 AM
I rephrase that part anyway

@ZachSaucier I'd rather you didn't ;-)

@Shokhet it's only displayed on the beta, yes, but that doesn't matter to most people, me thinks. They bank on this getting out of beta
@Shokhet I'm all for not talking bad about people
was just willing to prove my point :)
:I really should be studying for my final tomorrow morning:

@ZachSaucier Already? Finals week for us is next week.

@ZachSaucier Hm....I was reading a Coding Horror post last week that someone linked to on MSE ....apparently, if you put a number next to a name, people show an amazing propensity to do whatever it takes to make that number go up ;-)

@Doorknob冰 ours start tomorrow and go until next Friday

2:31 AM
@ZachSaucier And I have a major presentation 2 days from now.....that I'm not ready for.....

what do you guys think of this meta question? I have it in a gist so it can be nearer to its best form before posting: https://gist.github.com/ZachSaucier/e3ca98b4db126fbf664f

@Mooseman Thanks; comment posted :)
@ZachSaucier Your first psych example has been closed; you might want to edit or switch examples to cover that

I don't mind posting closed questions, the upvotes show the disagreement in the community just fine

2:35 AM
@ZachSaucier At first glance, I think it would work better if you put it all in the question, and let other people answer it in response to your observations.
Sorry, I don't have much time to read it thoroughly right now, but everything looks pretty great otherwise.

@Doorknob冰 I started with it that way but couldn't figure out how to make it a non-broad question

@Doorknob冰 I don't think so. The question is the problem, the answer is one possible solution; let people post others

it'd end up being "do you agree"?

@Doorknob冰 Then it gets the XY problem, I think

@ZachSaucier The feeling I get from him is that he's treating this site as a "catch-all, everything goes" kinda place, which is definitely not what we are looking for.
Someone should point him over to Meta so that we're all on the same page

go ahead

@ZachSaucier I think your final paragraph, the "call to arms" if you will, is a little directionless.
Meaning to say, I think it should propose something to do, rather than just restate the problem
@all I have to go in five minutes....don't expect me to hang around, and don't blame me if I drop off w/o warning.

the call to action is in the unclear/broad section, though I think I'll restate it at the bottom

@ZachSaucier I'll have to look at the revised version later; I don't have the time now.
I'm pinning it to the star wall so I can find it later ;-)

kk, I'll likely post to meta by then
it's mostly good as is

looks like I'm the only person around here who thinks that "use common sense" isn't a legitimate rule... something tells me if that rule was one that could be moderated for though it would already be used on basically all SE sites...

@JimmyHoffa it's not decided, post on meta is relatively even

I wouldn't call that vote count even, though yes it's not decided. Much of an SE site will continue to change the decisions that are made as the site progresses in the early phases, I just find it interesting how the vote skews right now.
It will surely be raised again a month or two from now, and a couple months after that. Early times always have lots of course corrections and long running debates
? How do you figure? It's +7 against

so comment/close/reopen to agree with it and link to the meta
Oh, sorry, misread :/
then you're in the wrong ;D

heh aye, I am right now. I just find it interesting, I mean, "common sense" as a rule? really?

I'm curious why you think that way though, I'd love to see your answer flushed out more
@JimmyHoffa what if I asked, "what's a faster way to brush all of my teeth effectively?"

Do you think "common sense" is a clear line that can be moderated to?

@JimmyHoffa absolutely not completely clear, but then again neither are many close reasons

@ZachSaucier I'm not saying there shouldn't be a line, but "common sense" ?? That's what that question is askinga bout

Q: Why is the quality of questions and answers not great right now?

Zach SaucierEven though we're in a small group of somewhat enthusiastic supporters of the idea of Lifehacks, the quality of questions on Lifehacks in general is a bit lower than I expected it to be. Many questions, though most are upvoted and have several answers, seem unclear or too broad. Why do you think...

3:08 AM
so I can ask, "How can I prevent from tripping over things when I walk?" ?

@ZachSaucier you're dodging my point- that question wants to make "common sense" a rule defined in the FAQ about what's on topic and what's not. There should be rules in the FAQ defining topicality, but "common sense" being one is just a blank check

it could be phrased better, but the need is there, don't you agree?

no. for common sens as a rule? Not at all. For rules? Yes. "Common sense" ? Only if you want a meta flood from everyone who gets questions closed under the common sense rule arguing about the definition of something utterly ambiguous.

@MacGyver Thoughts?

2 mins ago, by Zach Saucier
so I can ask, "How can I prevent from tripping over things when I walk?" ?

3:11 AM
still dodging. Write "Questions must use common sense" or some other rule that uses the phrase "Common sense" into a rule and then try and tell me it is a sensible rule.

Would this apply to psychological troubles as well? How about law? What about needing to hire a professional to fix something? — Zach Saucier 10 secs ago
@JimmyHoffa I am trying to get you to see the need for a rule to make the question I asked off topic
I don't care if you call it common sense or something else
It needs to be off topic

I told you I agree we need rules

what's a better alternative?

that question isn't about rules in the general, that question wants to make a rule called "common sense" -> Someone should ask a question about what rule we should have defining topicality around that stuff
but that question, wants the FAQ to dictate common sense as a rule

provide a better alternative rule that covers the same type of thing and I'm sure they'll be happy to switch over :)

3:14 AM
like I said countless times above, I think we should have rules. I don't know what belongs on or off topic, I just think the wording "common sense" is shit

it's trying to fill a need - help it out :)
@JimmyHoffa I mostly agree with that

I think most people do as well- which is why I'm confused on the voting in that question. I think that question is confusing people perhaps because it's asking for one thing but as you suggest - you wouldn't want that in the rules as it's suggesting
I can't believe people want ambiguous rules, and nothing's more ambiguous than "common sense", yet a bunch of people are voting to make it a rule
makes me think the question is confusing people

we want a solution
an ambiguous one is better than nothing at all
I want a clearer one, no doubt
I can't think of one at the moment

That's like people saying they want a solution to world hunger so they're going swimming because it's better than doing nothing, it addresses the problem in no way

not at all

3:19 AM
I used an analogy! I love me! Woo! anywho, later :D Do hope this site works out, seems like it could be neat

closing for being against common sense is getting the job done, it's just ambiguous so is likely to be misused more than a clear reason
it's more like giving a politician power to defend the people
they usually do the job, there's just usually something not exactly correct - either they're too aggressive against other nations or require too much of their people (meaning tracking them and such)

I always vote for turtles instead of politicians, perhaps that's the solution here! RAPHAEL FOR LIFEHACKS MODERATOR!

:changes name to Raphael and portrait to the ninja turtle: ;)
jk, I don't want to be mod of this

@ZachSaucier Why not?

not interested enough
I'm just curious about the topic and how the site will work

3:31 AM
@ZachSaucier Really?
huh.

I don't do any of this crap often, haha
I'd rather spend my free time on things I care about
using it more as practice for personal practice on helping run a community and improving my writing than anything

I do too. I wish I did manual labor as a living some days
seems simpler for the most part

I couldn't stand a desk job unless there was a gym in the next room and you got 5 15 min breaks a day.
@ZachSaucier For the most part, yeah.
The most complicated things are like calculating that if you have 12.7 acres of lawn, and your sprayer covers a strip about 18' wide, how many gallons you need to cover the entire thing, how many mph you have to average, what concentration of chemical you put in, etc..

is there a home improvement SE?
