Jon
12:08 AM
Stock shelves
No need to talk to people

Sie
That was part of my job actually lol.

Jon
Hard to be bad at

Sie
True. I kind of wish I hadn't taken the meat/seafood position.
I kind of wish I had chosen to work up front with people my age as everyone back in the meat department were usually like 35+.

Jon
12:26 AM
@Chris McFarland did you make your trailer for talllwmere?

@Jon yes lol
I did it in like 2 days and never touched it again

Jon
Ok lol

people don't like the voiceover

Jon
Yeah I can see that

but, it shows the game for what it is
so if you dont like the gameplay youre probably not gonna like the game, which is okay with me
would rather only have positive reviews from those that bother to buy it, rather than being letdown lol

Jon
12:28 AM
I'm just gonna try my best

Sie
At what point do you usually release a teaser?

Jon
Fuck man I feel like I am winging a lot of things

Add some nice music, maybe some quick text instertials (but not too long)
My trailer is from my alpha builds
I never bothered to make a new one for a full release lmao

Jon
But I do a decent job at every thing I touch

Long as you're showing good gameplay, that's the core of a game
unless you're trying to show off some fancy generic story cinematics

Jon
12:30 AM
30 seconds
How hard can it be :)

Sie
shit

my iOS App Preview videos, I just show clips of gameplay
on youtube, my gameplay videos get thumbs-up
can't be bothered trying to make it all prettied-up

Sie
I forgot about the story entirely lol.

I want my sequel to have an actual plot

I want to make something like Tallowmere.

Jon
12:31 AM
:D

Dark 2d roguelike with melee

Go for it
it's just blocks, rooms, jumping, weapons, and enemies
let the AI do its thing once you add in the enemies
slap in some sound effects and particle effects
bit of RPG stats
call it a game

Jon
Let the ai do its thing lol
Classic Chris

two states: patrolling and attacking
you could do more depending on whatever variables, but that's the core of it
my first 3 enemies didn't even have states
spaghetti code out the wazoo
3

Jon
Hehe that is cool
I like seeing and reading about game DEV progression

12:35 AM
Today I'm actually finally getting around to enabling/disabling platform-specific settings based on my "Scripting Define Symbols", rather than toggling a bunch of platform-specific gameobjects

Jon
Man when you get bigger you should start publishing for a couple of us here

desktop - steam? drm-free?
android - touchscreen? fire tv?
iOS? which shares touchscreen features with Android
xbox one?
wii u?
nevermind that the mobile platforms don't support local co-op so I disable that scene manually
and Unity's Audio DSP buffer sizes can't be set via scripting so I have to change them manually every time I switch my build platform lol :( so much manual stuff... trying to automate it a bit more today where possible
Maybe. Thing with being a one-person band is every task takes up time
can't delegate :/

Jon
Working with someone like me

In theory though, since I have a Wii U devkit, could sign some deals if I was bored

Jon
All you need to do is publicize to your fans. And make some select builds
With live Skype support

12:39 AM
haha :)
ports, it's really just about handling platform-specific controls, saving/loading, and achievements
one thing I like about selling on itch.io, is there's no payout threshold :)
can do instant payout to your paypal

Sie
I wonder if it's worth porting to Fire TV.

For me, not really

Sie
Most people use it for streaming iirc.

I only did it cuz Amazon gifted me one
made like, maybe $200 over a year lol
sold more copies on the Fire TV than the Windows Store though lol
Windows Store... 2 copies last I looked

Sie
Sounds like a poor choice of time invested tbh.

12:46 AM
Yep, and now I know
thing is, doing this blindly, I have no idea what to expect
doesn't help that I don't really do marketing, but organic purchases without advertising are a thing on some platforms
other platforms, not so much
Windows Store was a joke though cuz my game wouldn't appear in the platformers category
didn't even appear unless you searched for it
I think they've updated the store a little so it's better now
but I put in a ticket going, uhhh where is my game? And MS replied, "mmm something something algorithms"

Sie
lol
Sounds typical.
Everyone over on Reddit seems happy about games coming to Windows 10. However really all they are doing is just swapping from one closed garden another lol.

so this Wii U, hopefully I'll get this out to USA, Canada, and Mexico in 3 months maybe if I'm lucky. will tackle Nintend of Europe during or after that, but I have no idea how many copies it will sell. Only one way to find out though
Same with this Xbox One thing
haha. My experiences with Windows 10 aren't that great

Sie
As far as VR goes on my end. I kind of feel a little bit of a rush. Consoles are starting to get into VR and tbh while I want my game to be the best it can be I'd also like it to be kind of novel too.

some of my nz dev peeps, we were discussing VR userbase yesterday
if you look at Valve's "The Lab" listing
there's like maybe 150,000 users
which is probably a good indication of how many have purchased a Vive

Sie
That doesn't sound too terrible tbh.
@ChrisMcFarland Well you might want to take into account how many aren't able or don't care for room scale. I'm in the first half of that group.

12:54 AM
Yeah, I don't have the space.. - well, I could have the space but I've got 2 kids who would love to tangle up the cords I'm sure :P
plus the cost
and I've yet to see a game I'd be wanting to play every day for a month
I'd rather buy a new iPad than a VR set atm

Sie
Honestly I like the idea of room scale VR but as it stands it demands too much and feels like a gimmick.

mmmm
time will tell if it stays as a decent thing or not
I'd love to try it

Sie
Room Scale or VR in general?

Both I guess
the practicality of hooking a bunch of wires up and zoning myself out from the world
I have no free weekends, and when I do have free time during the week, I'm working

Sie
Before Google Cardboard I was a skeptic of VR. After that though I was sold on just how immersive it makes games. I like the Vive a lot but not so much for room scale but more so for the motion controls.

12:56 AM
just not gonna happen any time soon with my lifestyle
I've tried a couple Samsung phone VR thingies but wasn't that impressed

Sie
Ya. Definitely going to need to be stream lined for the main stream audience.

it's a big obstacle

Sie
Have you tried a Vive or Oculus? The Vive is amazing.

whereas phones, super accessible
consoles and computer, just need a screen and a pair of speakers or headphones
Nah haven't tried either, would like to though

Sie
As far as the Oculus it was practically dead after it sold out to FB and I think it will be on it's way out in the next year.
Only time will tell though.

12:58 AM
yeah
reminds me of the Blu-ray and HD-DVD fight

Sie
Wasn't much of a fight lol. Blu-ray noticed HD-DVD and looked back and then when it looked again it was gone. That's what happens when you have an inferior product and a high barrier of entry though.

1:18 AM
I personally think HD-DVD was a bit better, but I never owned one of them, so...

6 hours later…
user92578
7:54 AM
Morning!

user92578

user92578
Improved the crushing transition

user92578
Weapon still drops trough

user92578
8:10 AM

user92578
Smoother!

i.stack it please
ffs I still can't see it

user92578
Can you see gfycats?

user92578
The gifs are too big to upload to imgur

I think so
No I can't
wtf is this

8:14 AM
More blood plz!

btw lighting is very good looking smooth

user92578
that's nice to hear

Can you hardlink the actual back end webm from their cdn?

8:18 AM
Was worth a shot

user92578
damn imgur's size limits

So I took a look at Slick2D yesterday
And it's sooo intuitive and easy to use
And you can render loads of images without any performance loss
I can't wait to make my first proper game on it

user92578
that's the advantage of accelerated rendering! :)

I want to see the whole of the lighting, mind uploading a screenshot?

user92578

8:23 AM
Wow that's awesome
Damn I'm envious of your drawing :(

The lighting really makes hack of difference I can tell, though I wouldn't mind ambient light added instead a total dark

user92578
I've spent time working on it, I showed you sprites from when I started, right?

user92578
@BlueBug Yeah I can see your point but I think I'll go with this approach

@Tyyppi_77 no

user92578

user92578
8:29 AM
That's from the GunHero prototype that took me like a year to make

oh man...

user92578
yeah, I've come a long way

user92578

user92578
that was a little later

your character now looks more civil, than a soldier.
is that intended?

user92578
8:34 AM
yeah it is, GunHero in the currect iteration is just a normal guy who's had some military training

Your art then is far better than mine now though..

user92578
The point is that I practiced. Nothing comes for free.

Meh I think I'll just quit forever
Bye everyone

bye

8:56 AM
Bye..

any easy way to expose a array of Color32 in the Unity inspector ?

make it public

it is public

Then it should be exposed

its not. I;m gonna restart it and see if that helps.
yep
that solved it

9:06 AM
You're welcome

you didn't actually help me but thank you.

Hahaha
I set you on the right train of thought

Is there any difference between Color and Color32?
cuz I know Colors can be exposed/inspected
oh you solved it, nvm :D

Color is floating point I believe
Color32 is a 32bit int

9:12 AM
0..1f vs 0..255 per component

ah yes, cool

Hey Chris, without googling it...
Why is the sky blue?

science

Noice
Nitrogenous Refraction?
Is that a thing?
It should be called that if it is.

something like that, yeah

9:31 AM
Jesus, companies are cramming 512GB into MICRO SDs nowadays!!

cool. :D

What did you remove?

Jon
9:48 AM
none of your business
was a guy shooting up here last night
at 2am

Jon
he shot up a car down the road
cops had the area locked down until just now
so i'm working from home

Ugh I hate your country.
First Orlando
Now Jon's street

damn canada

9:58 AM
hahahaha

Jon
friggen canadians with their bolt action rifles

gun should not be allowed in the hands of civilian, I think.

^
They shouldn't allowed in the hands of anyone!

idly ideally... yes...

10:07 AM
idly?
I don't love you?

lol typo

You actually striked it through so people knew what I was referring to
that's so stacky of you
**Stacky**

*Adjective*

*Someone who uses many mannerisms and copies many traits of the StackExchange Community*
That's embarrasing
Why didn't it format

I don't love you @ShaunWild but I don't dislike you either. And I am willing to love you if you happen to be my lover of destiny. I am open to the possbility @ShaunWild Do you want to netfix and chill with me perhaps?

It depends. Are you male or female?

it is 21st century, come on.

10:11 AM
LOL
Imagine if sexuality just wasn't a thing by 2200
Everyone was just bisexual

yes people will no longer continue physical activities and just crawl back in their room with virtual reality.

Hahahaha oo spoo🗝

I have hooked up everything from opengl stuff to glm. I am like super close to rendering light and shadow map.
I just realized I am just rendering basic shapes and bunnies for 10 days; just to set up things and start to going.

@ShaunWild it doesn't format if you add a newline. it's pretty poor

I really want to make a game :(
**Stacky** *Adjective*

omeone who uses many mannerisms and copies many traits of the StackExchange Community
ffs

10:16 AM
I want to make a game too!

You just can't win can you
Blue Bug can we make a game together
As a 21st century couple
I want to make a 2d platform arena

yes we can. I will come up with ideas and you do the art and programming.
No I said I will come up with ideas.

You do the art I'll do the programming, we both do ideas

I want full 2d lighting+shadow and fluid particle effects including gas.
gas has to be interacting with world geometry.

Jon
like fart gas?

10:19 AM
also my art will require you to compute the game to be able to slow time back and forth like in game Braids.
Fart gas sounds good. We will require fart samples for that @ShaunWild

Jon
good idea, start with fart sounds Shaun
get us a nice variety
preferably various ethnicities as well, just go around public and ask politely, should be okay

@BlueBug it just has to use some euler fluid action as well
ya know, for the more wet fart or whatever

Jon
that would be a shart

just add some reverb

"leaen c++ in one video" okaydokey

10:43 AM
guys
Where in the world are those dino games? When I was really young, those games were THE thing but nowadays it's just zombies

Jon
Yeah man we need to bring back the dinogames

I want to make a tile based game
With a gas mechanic

Jon
no you don't

I dunno how the gas works exactly but with some kind of 2d flooding
And gasses interacting with the player/ other gasses

@NaCl ARK?

10:46 AM
the gas could work like cell autoomata

but yeah, Jurassic Park and DinoWorld and stuff
Turok

ARK is not the 'same' :(

Jon
Chuck Rock

haha yeah :(
ohh yeah!
those 16-bit caveman platformers

Jon
BC's quest for tires

10:48 AM
not exactly dinos, but
RAMPAGE

Jon
bubble bobble

I also remember a dino fighter in the arcades

With my new found love for accelerated rendering
ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

You abandon Java?

Nope

Jon
10:49 AM
Primal Rage

I just use a library which supports OpenGL

She'll be sad you love another one

Slick2D

Jon
remember primal rage? one of the dinosaurs farted on you
and pissed

Yeah xD

10:50 AM
Oh god you just reminded me..

Jon

Who remembers The Stomping Land

Jon

@Jon lol, i dont remember the pissing, but that's the one

Jon
Here is the fart attack

10:50 AM
lol

Much better than zombies

Jon
user image
3
gif of piss attack
This was a fatality move

lol
soon we'll get robodinos

Jon
wut is that?

Horizon: Zero Dawn for PS4

Jon
10:53 AM
meh.. console exclusives are all shit except for zelda :)

I can never remember the name

Jon
PS4 has gotten themselves quite a nice lineup of exclusives

I just google "redhead robot dinos"

@Jon Crash Bandicoot

Jon
not buying one though, frig that.
I KNOW
GODDAMN REMAKES OF 1,2,3
That is pretty gangster

10:54 AM
How did game developers pack entire games into so little memory twenty five years ago?
"Here's a related anecdote from the late 1990s. I was one of the two programers (along with Andy Gavin) who wrote Crash Bandicoot for the PlayStation 1."
good read

Jon
Read it a while back, agree it is a great read
There was an expanded article on it too
Here is the actual article in question.

ah nice

Jon
it is a long read ;)

"Try explaining this to a crabby artist at 3 in the morning. :)" lolol

Jon
you don't get a game like that published by sleeping at 3am

10:59 AM
"Yes, 4 bytes out of 2097152." Bet he knows that number by heart
