12:35 AM
@Almo aRE YOU STILL WITH US?
Whoops caps.
@PearsonArtPhoto Instead of all that guff at $666 you become a satanist and call it a day?

1:21 AM
LOL.
I'm going to wait until I have a game worth playing, right now all I really have is a demo/prototype.
Wow, I hit 4000+ on a reddit post... I'm getting somewhere...
Now if it could only be to one of my items, I'd be set...

5 hours later…
6:34 AM
@ChrisMcFarland Thanks for sharing your experience, never heard a greenlight story before. At what stage the game can be shown on greenlight? need to be fully completed?

6:47 AM
Your game doesn't need to be completed, but if you want a lot of Yes votes, you should have a nice gameplay video, several gifs, several screenshots. and the more diverse your media is, the better (eg show off different environments and enemies and items or whatever your game has)
Find the most intriguing and best-looking Greenlight listing that makes you wanna click Yes, and study what they do that grabs your attention

@chrisMcFarland the trailer you have on steam is the one you used for greenlight?

I don't remember, but probably lol

the one with femal robo voice

Stitching together video is hard hahaha

:)

6:56 AM
Not many people like my video lol
it's a bit long and the voice is kinda weird I think

well your reviews are mostly positive

Yeah, cuz the gameplay is fun :D

I wanted to test this shit
it is right to say that

most of the negatives are just cuz my game doesn't have enough enemy and item variation

wait
does tallowmere sold closely to 13k copies?
on steam I mean

6:59 AM
I can't say exact numbers
but between Steam, iOS, Android, and Fire TV, over 14k ;)

I've always been curious if this is reliable
gives a lot of informations about games on steam

the margin for error is fairly wide, but it's a good estimate
I use steamspy to look at how other games are doing for comparison :)

so it is kinda reliable
good to know
:)
bah, there are far too things to do in order to promote
I should build a lot of accounts in socials I don't give shits
so annoying
and build and follow a blog

yeah, it's not writing code :/

but first of all I need to finish to ncode the game or at least
yeah cuz writing code is quite funny

7:05 AM
blogging is marketing, publishing -- whatever you put out is then consumed by people for better or worse
I'm not much of a marketing person so I just whip up whatever

your blog is directly www.tallowmere.com ?

big companies though, fancy trailers and excellent websites and art and images and effects and really fine-tuned stuff
Yeah, though tallowmere.com never really had a dev blog of sorts
www.tallowmere2.com though, making an actual blog this time around
Really though, if you look at say Valve's TF2 / Dota 2 / Left 4 Dead blogs, they only post updates when they update their game, not much development stuff
But eh, you can do whatever you fancy
Rust, they write weekly updates and show off what they're creating
Edmund McMillen, writes up little teasers about what's he working on now and then :)

well with so many updates probably they have something interesting to say, ahaha
I woud ashame to spam posts on whatever shit I do in the game

That's the thing - if you have something to actually show off (ideally that's playable), updating the actual product speaks volumes
the early stages of writing about your game development, kind of boring tbh
but once there's substance to your game and it looks fun, easily attracts attention
but yes, shouting about yourself is very easy to make it feel like spam
It's a hard feeling
you don't want to annoy people, but at the same time you gotta say a little something, else nobody will know that you exist
but if you have a fun game, people will like and they'll tell their friends and share links and stuff, it spreads

ahhahahah

7:15 AM
but if whatever you're producing looks boring or same-old or lame, nobody's gonna care

holy lord, the hard truth
so many things to do, so low time
kinda despairing sometimes

haha yup
If you wanna aim big, yup, takes a lot of time
Nothing wrong with a small game if it makes you happy
might not be financially viable to make a living out of small stuff though
never know til you try
Angry Birds was Rovio's 20th mobile game or something

and if you have a shitty job because otherwise no food comes at home (or even the home does not let you in any longer) things get worse

yeah..... Common developer saying is, "don't quit your day job"

I think you can undertand me, not a matter of developer thing. If I was alone, I'd quit the job immediatly :) not with 2 kids rofl

user92578
7:20 AM
Morning

hello tyyppi

@Leggy7 haha yeah. my wife and I have two kids. My wife is the one with the stable income!
@Tyyppi_77 good mooooorning

user92578
This morning's task is to add switches for unlocking doors

Ah yes
I've spent most of today doing Android stuff for customers
played some Overwatch and some Dota 2 though too

user92578
Cool

user92578
7:23 AM
What's android stuff for customers

adding new controller profiles ._.

ah @ChrisMcFarland how does achievements work in steam? does steam provides you with something to implement or what else?

user92578
Also, I've meant to ask this from you: at what point in development did you add achievements? was Tallowmere ready and then you just "ported" the game to have achievement support?

user92578
@ChrisMcFarland This is where SDL comes handy

user92578
7:24 AM
SDL_GameControllerAddMappingsFromFile("gamecontrollerdb.txt");

@Leggy7 Steam has a Steamworks API that lets you call when achievements should be earned. partner.steamgames.com/documentation/api You can sign up on the site for free to get access to the documentation
@Tyyppi_77 I added achievements after I got greenlit

user92578
Yeah that's what I'm hoping to get to do too :)

user92578
Did you have some sort of event system in place before that?

user92578
Meaning that did achievement adding consist of adding the SteamWorks calls, or implementing a whole progress-tracking system and so on?

user92578
Sorry for the overly generic questions, but you happen to be my go-to-guy on these kind of questions :)

7:27 AM
@Tyyppi_77 Nice, yeah that's a big list. that's basically what this InControl plugin I use does. a large list of ID numbers mapped to various buttons and sticks. doesn't have every controller though, but has a very large number. So I ask the customers to use a dev controller app I made that displays the IDs as they press stuff, and fill out a form. Kind of inefficient (ideally would be built in-game), but eh it's good enough

user92578
Ah yeah

yeah like if I were to do achievements in my sequel, I'd make an AchievementManager, have a list of Achievements (id, title, description, image), and something like AchievementManager.AchieveAchievement()and then do a check to see if we're using Steam, make the appropriate call to Steam's servers, or if we're iOS or Android or whatever, wrap it in there
for my DRM-free version I made a local achievement system with a banner that pops up

user92578
Ah yeah. And the player class would do like if (bulletsShot > 10000) AchievementManager.Achieve(Achievements::MASS_SHOOTER); or something?

yeah
some achievement types also keep track of ints
(without you having to keep track of it locally yourself)

user92578
Does that mean that Steam allows you to do like SteamAPI.IncrementAchievementProgress(Achievements::LEVELS_COMPLETED, 1)?

7:34 AM
I think so but you'd have to check. I just stuck with the simple bools

user92578
Aight, okay

the Steamworks SDK is C++
I used a Steamworks.NET C# wrapper :D

user92578
Yeah, so that might be a little easier for me then at that point

but yeah, achievements, leaderboards, opening the overlay/browser, also user-generated content for the Steam Workshop stuff, and in-app purchases too
some networking stuff too

aww great!

user92578
7:38 AM
I'll probably be using SteamWorks for the achievements and for a level workshop, so that people can share the levels they create

user92578
Won't really do leaderboards as the game isn't hack-protected at all

yeah sweet

user92578
Oh and config & save file syncing ofc

user92578
But yeah all that stuff won't happen unless I get greenlit

user92578
But I'm really hoping I'll get a chance to get to that stuff

user92578
7:41 AM
I talked with some friends about my game dev thingy for the first time yesterday

user92578
They seemed quite interested

I also thought in keeping some local class to interact with steamworks
goal for this morning is to script player walk in new room
gonna spam over the socials!!!!!!!!!!

user92578
Sounds cool!

ahahah

user92578
Look at us, making stuff at the morning :)

user92578
7:44 AM
A good motivation for me is "just a little polish and then I can show this on Twitter"

aye, nice
I used to get enthused to do every screenshot saturday

rofl I hate twitter. built an account several months ago for a job I did and now it only spams me via sms what our prime minister says while sitting on the potty

user92578
I try to do that but I just can't work on cool stuff every Saturday, and memory leak hunting isn't very screenshottish

8:03 AM
and maybe if my wife finish to draw the good tiles, I'll insert them. cann't wait to have the new look. THEN I will seriously think to show it

Good art sells

user92578

8:18 AM
how was I able to live without resharper? I really don't know

user92578

user92578
You can also shoot the switches

cool
I really like your door animation
I'll have to try out Resharper one day

user92578
Thanks!

8:53 AM
I agree with chris but, generally, your whole art is really effective! Very simple and very good looking

user92578
thank you! <3

If I will be able to be a gamedev by profession I'll enjoy to have time to practice painting graphics for my own videogames. It should be really rewarding to bring your own fantasy to life

9:33 AM
yeah, half the reward is watching your hard work come together

Jon
The other half is all the attention you get from hot babes

9:55 AM
HEAPS

Anyknow why I have to allocate char pointer array with char[size];
char *vertchar = new char[vertlength];
just so I can use it with glShaderSource(vertshaderID,1,&vertchar,&vertlength);
?
I don't think it's because of vertchar = vertstring.data();
I'm gunna go with that it needs a size too work..
@Tyyppi_77 I would get all emotional if I could see like a full dev vlog or website too see the development of that game.

user92578
Not full, but loads of progress: gunhero.surge.sh

you little star :P

Jon
10:11 AM
Programmer job with Canadian gov if interested
Must starts at 66
No must

@Tyyppi_77 Hahaha panicing on fire enemies that is golden.

user92578
:)

@Tyyppi_77 You wouldn't happen to know the real difference between a char *buffer and allocating a new char[arraysize]?.
Because apparently OpenGL can't convert a char buffer only a allocating new char[arraysize] whatever that is? :/

user92578
Do you want an array of char pointers or an array of chars?

const GLchar **strings

user92578
10:21 AM
so do you want a string or an array of strings

glShaderSource wants a pointer of strings .
sorry string
Oh I see so it's the difference between an array of strings and a string.
interesting

user92578
char** array = new char*[size];

which would give you a pointer to an array of chars of size?

user92578
that would be an array of char pointers

user92578
so an array of strings

10:25 AM
hmm
Oh okay so const char *vertbuffer[vertlength]; would give you a pointer to a vertbuffer array rather then a array of strings like const GLchar *vertstring = new char[vertlength]; would?.
Now it's becoming clear , you should never give a buffer unless it specifically says it needs a buffer. : P
I need to read more into memory management especially new , delete :)

user92578
@DominicHughes You're allocating an array of char's in poth of those

user92578
Actually I think the second one might not even be valid

user92578
Does that actually compile?

user92578
Oh wait yeah it does

DH.
1:44 PM
Unity requires quicktime to run videos as textures, really?

1:57 PM
unsuprising
ball of mud design

@DH. be grateful you can do it at all
on mobile you can't without a plugin or coding it yourself

2:35 PM
@Almo that's a good point for unity
I found out last night my new engine doesn't have a networking layer ... but the next version of .net has a multiplatform supporting version of System.Net.Sockets
I have most of a cross platform C# async socket client coded up now :)
its nice to be able to just "update .NET" as I see fit for my game :)
Not missing unity yet at all!

Sie
3:06 PM
Stupid bank.
I tried to get that wonderful fog asset last night and they put a block on my card. Saying that they thought it may be a fraudulent purpose since the payment was going to Germany.

Sie
I should probably call them up and see if I can't get the Unity store white listed. I mean I don't use them much but sometimes for art assets.

Jon
another day, another sexual harrassment charge at work

Against you?

Jon
naw i write up one per day

Sie
3:14 PM
Geese. That's not good.

Jon
life sucks being this sexy man.

Geese? Like flying honking animals?
probly mean jeez. come on man! :)

Sie
This is going to make me sound like a lazy fuck but oh well. Ya I just woke up at like 10:45AM.
Still groggy.

Jon
wow the new final fantasy looks ridiculous

Sie
I've tried to get into Final Fantasy quite a few times but it never really clicked with me.

Jon
3:28 PM
did you see the new one?

user4704
The new ones are almost universally the kind of stuff I don't like.

Sie
The only game I liked related to them was the Final Fantasy Tactics game.

user4704
FF15 is hilarious, it's been in development for so damn long.

user4704
FFT is one of my favorite games. :D

Sie
3:29 PM
Oh god those voices. Christ almighty that sounds bad.
That blonde haired kid sounds like a robotic chipmunk.

Jon
i beat FF1 and FF3
then I played FF7 and was like... wtf is this shit
oh, and I beat a final fantasy game on gameboy

user4704
Those weren't FF games, they were re-branded SaGa games.

Jon
right

user4704
I've finished all of them up until 13, except the MMOs. 13 just... I couldn't do it.

Sie
@JoshPetrie Same. I never did get to play the PSP one though.

Jon
3:30 PM
i also don't understand the huge hype surrounding ff7
the game is literally a movie
a boring movie

user4704
It had a lot to do with the time.

Sie
I actually liked 13 a lot because of the characters but the game just felt way too on the rails for me.

user4704
I think there are some good, overlooked parts of FF7.

Sie
My cousin promised to kill me if I ever touched his copy of FF7.

user4704
But it's from an era where it's hard for it to hold up.

Sie
3:31 PM
Said it was worth $300+ or something along those lines.

user4704
Pff.

Sie
No idea where he got that figure from.

user4704
"Unopened" copies of the game are like $100.

user4704
He's just being silly.

Jon
he's being a huge turd

user4704
@Sie That's some guy trying to SELL it for that much.

Jon
haha
good luck getting that.

user4704
Look instead at the sales that actually complete.

Sie
@JoshPetrie True. I did cherry pick that listing but I bet there is some sucker who would buy it.

user4704
It's worth what people pay for it, not what somebody wants to get for it :D

user4704
3:33 PM
You're right, there might be, but that doesn't mean your friend's valuation is good :D

Jon
i'd like to get 1 million for it

user4704
Anyways.

Sie
Ya. It'd probably fetch like around ~$100 if (keyword there: if) he gets lucky.

user4704
I think I have the most nostalgia wrapped up in FF7, even more so than some of the earlier games I like more, overall.

Jon
FF1 and FF3 for life here
FF3, the number of unlockable characters and secrets.. man

user4704
3:35 PM
I really didn't like the direction they took the FFT sequels.

Jon
that was insane at the time.

user4704
I liked FF10 at the time, and I still think the battle system they employed there had the distinction of taking the longest to feel really boring and grindy, but I recently re-watched an LP of it and it really shows how horrible the writing is on a closer inspection.

Jon
Terra
Locke
Edgar
Sabin
Cyan
Shadow
Relm
Strago
Gau
Celes
Setzer
Mog
Gogo
Umaro
14 playable characters

user4704
And the FF10 endgame was a litany of misery.

Jon
back in the days of SNES
I really like the battle system in mario rpg

user4704
3:36 PM
That was a fun game too.

user4704
I need to start collecting some of these old console systems.

Sie
I was watching a lets play of the new Ratchet and Clank and noticed that the game looked great. However they couldn't even get the turd to hold a solid 30FPS. Who thought that was a good idea?

Jon
console developers

user4704
When I have kids I'm only going to expose them to video games in the order I was.

Sie
I mean the player could turn the camera too fast and you could see frame drops. It was horrendous.

Jon
3:37 PM
LOL @JoshPetrie
First game my son played when he was 1, was excitebike
he could beat the first two levels by just holding down the A button
I tried to get him to play mario 1, but that first goomba kept killing him

Sie
lol
So did you sacrifice him after that point?

Jon
i told him, everytime you die in the game, dad punches you in real life
5
he hates video games nowadays

Sie
We need more parents like you.

Jon
haha, that is what my brother did to me
if I won at 2 player games, he would punch me and say he can beat me in real life

Sie
The good old days. Nowadays you just have kids threatening to f*ck your mom over the computer.

3:40 PM
@Jon you mean super mario 1?

Jon
really?
@Almo I shit in your direction

that's what I would call "mario 1"

Jon
not me
mario 1

but that's "Donkey Kong"
the other game is "Mario Bros."
making it "Mario 1"
where as Donkey Kong is just the first game with Mario in it. :)

Jon
his name is jumpman

3:44 PM
yeah funny that

Jon
funny thing is... i never liked this game
I always thought it was stupid and boring
The hammer powerup, can't even go up a ladder with it... unplayable

I liked it un til I saw how to beat the elevator level, hiding in the spot where the thing bounced over your head
first example of knowledge is more important the skill that I ran into

Jon
this was a similar game, but way better
it did come out shortly after -- but it was insanely better imo
so I got a new work laptop today -- i7 baby

Sie
Need all the processing power you can get for them solitaire games :P.

Jon
that is not what I do at work

user92578
3:52 PM
I made a puzzle where you have to locate a switch for a locked door from an alternative path:

user92578

user92578
The last door is locked initially

user92578
creates awkward silence

Jon
that is stupid
i like it

Jon
4:08 PM
cool, can you push crates?

user92578
No

Jon
can you make slaves run into lava to allow you to complete gaps?

user92578
nope, mainly because bodies fade away

Anyone know if bullet physics is multithreaded?

Jon
4:25 PM
no one knows

Yeah; you have to ask "errr, dude, bullet2 or bullet3?"
and then which version..

user92578
4:37 PM
Whoa new Office has a dark grey theme, awesome

DH.
I didn't even get to Disc 3 in FF7
The game was huge

I don't think I quite like it, but it's interesting at least...

DH.
The drunkness effect to me is good

I could put a trail renderer, that would actually look neat...
Yeah, I'm not as worried about that. I sobered up the sailors a bit.
I'll do some more tweaking sometime, but...

DH.
Just need to improve that "light path"

4:48 PM
What I added was the light path.
It's almost right... Sigh.

DH.
Yeah you need to smooth the curves

Jon

user92578
=SUM(INDIRECT("B2:" & ADDRESS(ROW(); COLUMN();4)))

user92578
This is just displaying 0 for me

user92578
Ideas?

user92578
4:53 PM
I'm trying to calculate the total of a column dynamically

Yeah, it does look better backwards than forwards, doesn't it...
I hadn't even thought to add that as a feature, but I think I will be doing so now...

DH.
Would still need to smooth the curves :P

user92578
@Jon This actually looks pretty good

user92578
What? It might actually not be the formula

user92578
Even a static SUM won't display anything but 0

Sie
4:55 PM
Anyone want to see a live stream of a burrito sitting on top of a poll?
well too bad I'm eating it now

user92578
Ah

user92578
Can't reference the current row there
