Sie
12:09 AM
So I've been playing with this web app called Tinkercad and it lets me export to .obj. Is there anyway to make it so that I can manipulate the shapes separately? I've seen .blend files that let you do so.
The .obj file just treats the entire thing as one large model rather than a bunch of pieces that are put together.

that's either a problem with the exporter or whatever you're trying to edit the file with. the obj format does support multiple models.

Sie
Well at least in Unity it shows a parent object (that seems empty) and then a file called "default" which is the model itself.
I could try a different format I guess however none of the other formats seem to be supported out of the box in Unity.

check the file and look for lines with o [object name]
if there's only one, then the problem is the exporter. if there is more than one, then Unity is just merging them all together.
also check for group lines like g [group name]

Sie
Well it downloads as a single file [name].obj and in Unity it imports with a parent (it's empty) and then default which is the mesh/model itself.
@IcyDefiance Like open it with notepad++ or something?

yeah, it's just plain text

Sie
12:16 AM
I just see a ton of lines with the letter f and then a set of 6 numbers.
Also v, and vn.
No o's or g's in there.

yeah, so the exporter merged them all

Sie
Is there anyway to un-merge them?

Jon
heyyyyy

just for the trivia, "v" lines are the vertex positions, "vn" is the normals, and "f" combines those positions and normals (and texcoords if the file had them) into faces
and no, the separation is lost information. if you want to split them you'll have to do it manually in blender or something.

Sie
There are other formats (but Unity doesn't like them out of the box) such as .stl, .x3d, and .vrml.

Jon
12:19 AM
@MickLH how do you make that music?

Synthesizers. mostly

I don't know anything about those formats or whether they support multiple objects, and even if they did, I don't know if Tinkercad would export properly to them

Some of the synths use samplers to create the raw waveform to start from

Sie
@IcyDefiance I guess I could try that. It doesn't sound that hard. It's a shame because Tinkercad is actually really nice for whipping up models (at least for prototypes).

Jon
what app?

Sie
12:21 AM
Tinkercad is a web app. It does basic 3D modeling.

lol actually I don't know if blender's obj exporter is good either. I've only used it for simple cubes and spheres. it does use 'o' lines though, so I'm guessing it'll work.
and then you have to hope Unity supports them :P

Sie
Well I'm looking for a 3D modeling application. What do you use?

Jon
who made those cool 3d videos where blocks all fell into a cohesive image?
@MickLH i'll make a build at some point with the song included
You can play it and get a feel
it seems pretty good to me up to now

Sie
Oh ya. Btw Icy do you have any dev. blog or what are you working on? I don't recall you seeing working on anything at least not here.

I use blender, but like I said, I mostly just do simple shapes. I used to do more with it, like I made a pretty detailed model of a desktop computer a long time ago, but in the last 5 years my avatar is the most complicated thing I've made.

Sie
12:24 AM
I would use Maya or Autodesk but they are permitted for non-commercial use or edu use only.

I do have a blog but it only has 2 posts and one of them should be reworded. I can't really think of anything useful to write about.

Sie
Any projects or just doing this for fun?

once my vulkan framework is a little more advanced I might just start posting screenshots or something
all my code right now is for fun. I was contracting for a while but ran out of work, so I'm looking for a more steady job or more contract work or something.

DH.
If you want to make really good modelling stuff, you can't escape from a paid tool
There's only one tool that was free that an artist showed me

Modo is pretty cheap and making plugins for it is nice. Very clean internals

Jon
12:31 AM
oh hey man

DH.
And the most important tools he used he said it was Zbrush and Substance Designer

Modo includes a ZBrush-like functionality. works really well. It's great for the price.
Hey Jon

Sie
Don't they have the subscription model? I'd rather pay once and be done.

I paid only once for Modo. Unless they changed it since 2 years ago it should be only once.
You have to pay for newer versions but they often have rebates

Sie
It's $1799 to buy it outright.

12:34 AM
its 1200 now? when I bought it it was around $700.

@Jon here's the by-products of what I had to suppress while working on that (the title is a message to my friend to tell him he should finish it for me :P)

Sie
They have this: http://store.steampowered.com/app/321540/

Still though.
I'll try the trial version and see what I think of it.

Plus its one of the few that runs on Linux just fine
I own version 701. Was cheaper back then. I guess they got popular. They do put effort in it and they had great support forums last I checked.

Sie
MODO indie 10.0 which is $300 if you buy it outright too.

Jon
12:40 AM
@MickLH is that something you made today?

mostly, I ripped a piece from my "scrap pile"

Jon
I wish I could come up with a cool game idea to encompass your musical talent

lol I'm good at sound design, my music is meh

@Sie I don't know what's the difference between the full and indie versions tho. that's new to me.

Sie
Not sure. Probably if you make x amount of money you need to buy our uber pricey package or go screw yourself.

12:43 AM
The video says there's no commercial restrictions...
Aw, they don't have a Linux version of indie

That seems kinda backwards

Sie
Didn't Unity recently release a beta linux version of their editor?

I tried the editor on Linux and it seemed to work fine
Though compiling the projects was flaky... sketchy even, it crashed and took down my project with it a couple times

modo indie restrictions listed here: community.thefoundry.co.uk/discussion/…

Jon
blarg

12:47 AM
doesn't look like anything too strict. should still be fine for most people.

"third-party plugins unavailable" Aw, so I can't use my export plugin.

considering how easy it is to merge 2 OBJ files... I'm not sure if a polygon limit on OBJ exports is even worth implementing lol
I mean, if they use negative indices then you can literally just append the text files

Jon
i wrote a damn card game today
in unity

I prefer to build my worlds in my own editor so that wouldn't be a problem. I'd rather just model the world elements.

Jon
make me card flipping sounds

12:50 AM
@Jon what are you avoiding that has had you make 2 completely new game projects in the last couple days?

Sie
ProBuilder is a godsend for Unity @StephaneHockenhull

Jon
figuring out what Gorb is missing

@Sie I got my own engine.

Sie
Even still I love it. It's kind of like Hammer but not shit.

I only use Unity at work, making quick & dirty apps for clients, and swearing a lot at it.

12:52 AM
@Sie WOAH

Sie
Maybe it's because it's my first "real" engine but I love it and haven't had many problems with it as of yet. Some things are quirky but easy.
@MickLH ?

that's intense how deeply in denial Unity users have to go to enjoy using it, they literally call obviously the best things shit

Jon
Unity isn't so bad... its when you hit the 1 year mark, as per their terms of agreement, you have to sacrifice a innocent child

Sie
"I hate anything that is popular therefore I'm cool!"

12:54 AM
That's no reason to hate hammer bro

Jon
I poop, therefore I am normal. --Albert Einstein

Sie
@MickLH I don't hate it but it simply hasn't aged all that well.

Jon
actually, plenty of reason to hate hammer bro

All the damn bugs that were reported 3-4 years ago that are still in the engine and it'd take them 15mins to fix...

Jon
those bastards are hard to predict

12:55 AM
@StephaneHockenhull but would it break people's games??

Sie
I honestly kind of want to swap from Unity anyway. If I weren't so deep in bed with my current project I would in a heart beat.

Jon
your project is in bed with you

homewrecker!

Jon
silly coder

Sie
Wave Engine and Xenko both look promising.

Jon
12:56 AM
politicians are promising

@MickLH As opposed to all the other bugs they introduce every revisions? :P

Sie
@Jon Well ya obviously. I mean I wouldn't be in bed with the project if it weren't simultaneously in bed with me.

Jon
ahhh nice...

Sie
@StephaneHockenhull Ya because Unity is the only program in existence to ever have bugs, right?

Jon
disturbing, but nice.

12:58 AM
@StephaneHockenhull I thought of that when I was saying it but I figured that might open a rabbit hole :P
@Sie Oh now you're defending Unity? After you make it nurse your child who you have admitted to taking to bed while planning to leave Unity the whole time?

My head isn't working well enough to use complex math...

Sie
@MickLH I was just a wee boy! I didn't know what I was getting into.
@PearsonArtPhoto Join us in the bi-weekly engine wars!

@Sie I have never had a software product used by so many people that was as buggy as Unity.

I think I've personally reported something like 5 bugs that were accepted, and I'm not even trying...

1:01 AM
sometimes jon... thefuck man

Although it does seem to be getting better... Will see when 5.4 is released how buggy that is...

Jon
makes you think

Sie
@MickLH As you're busy personifying Unity as my wife lol.

mistress*
@Jon makes me think we should have robot slaves by now
we could have hella awesome everything, if human slaves could build all of this we have now.. imagine where we could be!

Jon
50 hour work weeks
that would be hella cool

Sie
@MickLH We already do. High level compilers are the whip masters and the binary code is the slaves. You monster.

Still bugged in Unity

Jon
Unity is perfect

@Jon 150* hour work weeks

Jon
Work till you die!

1:03 AM
Lost an afternoon a month ago "discovering" that bug

that leaves about 2 hours for charging, and 30 minutes of total moving from job to job each day

@Jon Said no programmer who had ever used it for more than a few hours...

Sie
@StephaneHockenhull Look how great Unity is. It even gives you free "activities" to do! :D

Sie
@PearsonArtPhoto Jon isn't real?
Well I had my suspicions.

Jon
1:04 AM
I pooped little jons today
my gf is singing that slaves song now
success.
i played it 10 times here
lol

There are too many problems that I'm trying to solve at the same time, and I think that's my problem...

lol repetition = fame

Sie
Alright serious question though. Why does it take so long for the Unity team to fix bugs? Gross incompetence, spaghetti core code, or what?

It usually doesn't take them that long to fix bugs...

@Sie I think you have some abusive relationship syndrome.
Unity can change, it'll get better with time, it still loves me, it's just misunderstood :D

1:06 AM
If your face shows up on TV >100 times a year, you are now famous even if there is no actual reason for you to be.

Sie
@StephaneHockenhull I can fix her.

Some of the bugs that are there... My game didn't work in WebGL once. It was entirely composed of primatives...

@Sie she's not open source. it's not possible.

How could you have such a silly bug, to not work with the most primitive objects. And at that point WebGL was the accepted version, Unity Web Player was deprecated.

1:07 AM
Man, that's the software equivalent of "She doesn't want to improve herself"

Sie
@IcyDefiance Unity gives source code access though (for pros). They don't let you rebuild it though do they?

Sure you technically can go in and do brain surgery by editing the raw machine code... if you can find the exact bits to flip

I think they've fixed all of the bugs that I discovered, most of them within a few weeks.

Sie
@MickLH There is a group out there literally cloning Windows.

@Sie if you have all of the code and dependencies then you can build it. it's not like they can stop you.

1:08 AM
@Sie ReactOS already got close enough

You know those OS-tans? The 2ch anime girl avatars of OSes & other softwares ... I'm afraid of what Unity-tan would look like.

@MickLH Isn't that what hackers do?

Sie
@IcyDefiance Well sure but legally speaking I don't know.

some crazy bi-polar drooling friendly beast

@PearsonArtPhoto Uh hmmm jeez I wouldn't know about that? aw shucks

Sie
1:08 AM
@PearsonArtPhoto More or less ya.

What's up

@StephaneHockenhull But with good chest and stuff

And then there are those who hack games to fix bugs...

I'm arrive

Though she makes weird faces and you have to correct her gesture, so she doesn't look revolting

1:09 AM
@Sie if they didn't want you building it, giving you the code would be stupid. there wouldn't be any reason to do that. they probably just don't want you redistributing your build.

@MickLH Unity created their own Unity-tan character but that doesn't count.

Jon
@MickLH that song needs to be more cheerful

Jon
thats me in real life

Sie
1:10 AM
@IcyDefiance I think you're on point there.

@Jon the thing with the gorb and the stuff?

Jon
its great

more happyful cheer-joy good fortune

Jon
i like it, but the more I play it the more it sounds too dark

@Sie That's 99% of stackexchange in one comic panel

1:11 AM
I'm leaving Lua

Jon
its your damn dark core shining through

lol I'm sorry jon

Jon
I am gonna use it though
just so you know

I miss everything about C++. It's not worth the minor ease of prototyping in Love2D

where is this music

1:12 AM
@Jon I'll let my musical idea cache clear out and look at it again later

Jon
its only sent to me.

ah ok

Jon
its similar to the last one, but without the... clarinet?

I changed a couple things, I can't really remember everything that's different but I did replace a few instruments and removed one of the channels

Jon
yeah, there was a higher pitched instrument
clarinet style
taht you removed completely

1:14 AM
I thought it was too... bang bang or something idk

Jon
i liked it.. but it was bang bang for the game style
i personaly prefer your other stuff

So turns out the Pi3 hasn't changed anything on the GPU API. Even the overlay code still works. I'm pretty happy with that. My engine ran on the Pi3 without having to fix anything and rendered everything just fine.

I put in a thing that was inspired by it, I think it's spiritually replaced by the xylophone thingy

you guys are mean tlaking about this music that we can't hear

Jon
but some games, need some styles :)
mick you wanna post it?

1:16 AM
haha no need
:)

sure lol sorry I just thought you might not want the music to be released early

yeah keep it private for now

Jon
up to you, i like to get feedback

like it's not even done yet right?

Jon
sounds pretty done :D
mick is a pretty awesome musician

1:17 AM
I want to give it one more pass to see if I can maybe cheer up some of the chords like you said earlier

Jon
i try to happy up everything i do
even though its not what I actually want to do
ideally, everything would rip apart, and blood would explode all over the place

yesss
you should sell DLC like that
maximum horror and gore everything with frantic death-core electro speed metal
but as an optional skin so it's still family friendly :)

Sie
@Almo LoL match? C'mon I need my fix.
Damn just missed him 5 minutes ago.
Anyone else want to play a quick round? I mostly do support or top.

Have any of you guys been following the Pyra development? pyra-handheld.com/boards/pages/pyra

Sie
@StephaneHockenhull Looks like something out of the late 80's.

1:27 AM
The color? HAHAHA

DH.
It's keyboard looks like from a calc

Sie
Alright well more like late 90's or early 2000's. The keyboard and just the look of it reek of those full keyboard slide cell phones.

lol yeah, both the device and the website look like they're from the 90s, but that's an impressive list of features

Jon
sell me a mechanical keyboard.

I got the Pandora (previous iteration), pretty stoked for this one with a regular full Debian OS.

Sie
1:32 AM
It looks like it'd make a decent little emulator device. It should run PSP emulators like a pro and maybe even PCSX2 too (well lower spec games anyway).
@StephaneHockenhull What was the battery life?

Being able to dev on the bus is a weird feeling

Sie
Coding on that thing seems like a nightmare but emulation and light duties would be good.

@Sie: the Pandora was 8hours full CPU & GPU usage, 6hrs if you enabled WiFi.

Sie
Not bad at all.

This one is estimated to have similar battery life, maybe one less hour.
Coding on the Pandora works surprisingly well. The screen was low res but I could manage.
The D-pad and buttons work as cursor keys and home/end/pgup/pgdown, left and right bumpers as shift and control
it's pretty fast typing when you get used to it for something the size of a DS
The only thing is the CPU was just 700Mhz, 256KB cache. Compile time wasn't super.
950Mhz OCed helped a bit but still took a while to build
The Pyra is dual/quad core so that'll make a big difference. Two 1.5Ghz ARM Cortex A15 and 2 Cortex-M4 but they only mention the A15 on the main page. The OS might not be using the slower M4s yet.

1:53 AM
Dat homebrew nostalgia tho

Jon
respect the oldies
wow
that is what I am giong to do after gorb
redo memorable oldies

Once I get a pyra I might stop driving and take the bus again so I can dev on my way to work and back. recuperate that lost time.

Sie
2:37 AM
Anyone know if True Blood is worth watching?

Jon
3:01 AM
no one knows

The vampire series?

DH.
Probably

Sie
@StephaneHockenhull Ya that's the one. I remember it looking pretty good a while ago but never bothered. I need something to hold me over.

looked at the wikipedia page ... a few details of the description make me not wanna watch it. It sounds preachy.

Sie
It was a bit but it looked decent.

3:08 AM
@Sie probably not

Sie
What about Dexter?
I stopped watching around here...

I'm currently finishing what Netflix has of Once Upon A Time

There's a few episodes of the series (Once Upon A Time) where the writers make all the characters fall into whiny emo bitch mode but aside from those few episodes I love the show.

i didn't get past first episode on dexter
didn't want to put up with comedy of errors with his gf

Jon
3:11 AM
i watch season 1
started season 2

Sie
Well anyone know anything good to watch?

Jon
then i was like... errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Halt and Catch Fire

Bojack Horseman?

Sie
It's all subjective but still. Come on hive mind tell me how to think!

Jon
Silicon Valley

Sie
3:11 AM
@StephaneHockenhull Seen that and it's awesome.
@Jon Yep that too. Another great show. Season 2 premier was a bit slow though.

There's a lot of cringe but I guess that's the charm :)

Sie
For Bojack?

@Sie bloodline is good

on nflx

Sie
3:12 AM
I liked it but I felt like it was trying too hard to be "deep" at times.

Jon
Halt and Catch Fire
seriously season 1 is awesome

@Sie those are the parts
really bad "deepness"

Sie
ya

lemme check my netflix ...
booting the WiiU...

Jon
the new zelda is going to be a NX launch title
goddamnit nintendo

3:14 AM
yeah, hopefully they'll make it 100% WiiU compat like what they did for the Wii launch with the gamecube version

Sie
I stopped trusting Nintendo after they released the "new" 3DS. Fuck them. Mario has been stale since the 90's.

Jon
regardless, they have been touting zelda since wii u was released
seriously they have, I have been waiting for it for a long time now

@Sie I'm guessing you've watched Archer already?

Jon
NOW all of a sudden, it is being held off yet again, to be a NX launch title

Sie
@StephaneHockenhull I think I watched the premiere and it was good. Need to catch up on the new ones though.
Modern Family is good too. Usually not my sort of show but the dry humor does it for me.

Jon
3:16 AM
Rick and Morty

I enjoyed Blue Exorcist (cartoon)

Sie
Seen taht.

Jon
if you haven't watched Rick and Morty you are stupid.

Sie
Rick and Morty I mean.
Obligatory fuck Tammy btw.

Kill La Kill?

Sie
3:17 AM
Seen that too. Pretty good.

Jon
the Roy game

Hunter X Hunter?

Sie
Not into anime that much these days.
I am going to a convention though soon.

I tried watching rick and morty but the voices gave me a headache
same for south park

Sie
3:20 AM
I too found them annoying but still it's a good show overall.

its not on my Netflix :(

Jon
best cartoon ever made

@Sie OH! Check Misfits

Jon
the multiverse episode was so cool

It's a superpower movie, but the ones who get superpowers are juvies
hopeless juvies
sorry, not movie
TV series
superhero tv serie, UK
I kinda want to watch it again now that I'm thinking about it.

Sie
3:25 AM
Looking into 3D modeling software and examples then this... thing shows up...

HAHAHAHAHA

DH.
wtf is that lol

KILL IT WITH FIRE

Sie
Apparently someones practice model on deviant art.
This one too.

DH.
I mean, it's OK to stay low poly but... wth with that face...
At least that one is well made
I liked that ducknicorn

Sie
3:27 AM
Not bad but sort of creepy.

Suddenly I don't feel so bad about my 3D modeling :P

DH.
And I was thinking that the worst part was the texture

Sie
Christ.
I think I recognize that character from some where.

Sie
3:31 AM
Why did I think she was from Disgaea?

I tried making a more regular-anime version, less SD

Sie
Was that yours?

that model, yes. in my engine. testing shaders.

Sie
ah

Other POV
before I added specular highlights in the shader
Next thing I have to learn to do animations

Jon
3:40 AM

. . .
Jon, why do you hate us so much? :D

DH.
It seems to be his second job, posting weird shit here at the chat

all right, and that's enough internet for today

Jon
time to gorge on food

5 hours later…
user92578
8:59 AM

user92578
It's a new general enemy that does nothing special

Okay I'm trying to make a Camera in OpenGL
so far I've seen that I need a campitch and camyaw
then add this too direction whilst * by M_PI/180
which does what I don't know perhaps allows for
mouse movement or something...

user92578
is there a question there?

@Tyyppi_77 Well if you know what the math is and how you figured it out of a opengl camera Id be seriously eager to know.

user92578
That's reallyreally generic

9:12 AM
I am baffled , according to jamie king's videos you need mouse position and a vector that handles the rotation when the mouse position changes in certain area's .
I've tried to draw a diagram in paint and tried to implement that technique but it didn't work for me since I couldn't even get a correct angle value on my mouse position .

user92578
Well work on fixing that first then?

I deleted it got way too annoying.
however I can implment it again it's just a SDL_mouse x int and SDL_mouse y position but then too change that into an angle is extremely difficult and drawing a line that follows the mouse is also difficult

user92578
That doesn't sound hard at all

Well I could do a put pixel function in SDL then draw a line with x and y position ,etc lol
but you can't exactly do that easily in OpenGL

user92578
tan(angle) = (y/x) or something like that

9:15 AM
Interesting where did you learn that I'm sorry?

user92578
Like 7th grade math class, that's like the most basic trigonometry

Which is what genre?
linear algebra , trignometry , calculas?
probably trig

user92578
read my message please

user92578
it makes conversations easier

I did read it , I was asking a simple question where did you learn to do
tan(angle) = (x/y) I assume trignometry?

user92578
9:17 AM
> Like 7th grade math class, that's like the most basic trigonometry

Brillant I've got a trig book finally a chance too use it ;)

user92578

user92578
That's really basic gamedev stuff

user92578
All you gotta (probably) do is translate the mouse coordinates so that the origin is at the center of the screen

user92578
9:32 AM

user92578
Aight now he calls for backup

9:49 AM
@Tyyppi_77 Thank you for that I'll defiantly look into that as a potential solution.
