Pip
12:49 AM
back
@TheMuffinCoder ir looks fine

Joe
1:02 AM
seems good to me man

Joe
1:47 AM
are there any obvious downfalls to performing all of my game within one scene Unity and just swapping out the "fixtures" around the player

2:24 AM
@Joe when you load the scene, it will load all of the fixtures, unless they are generated dynamically
items that are not "enabled" still get loaded
@IcyDefiance you here?

kind of
league time?

if you want

sure
today I decided to start working on my league statistics website again...only to realize I hadn't pushed it to github before reformatting my computer XD

oh shit!

Joe
3:04 AM
@Almo thanks! yea I guess what I am talking about is creating and destroying things within one scene... as opposed to setting up pre built scenes and formally "loading" them
to me it seems like its all the same but idk if there are memory leak concerns or what

3:28 AM
@Joe be very careful about memory
C# makes you think you have good garbage collection, and you don't really
Unity always finds some way to fuck it up

dunno about unity, but for C# in general you'll pretty much only get memory leaks when you don't unsubscribe from events properly
that, or if you use an IDisposable class and don't dispose it
unity probably introduces a hundred new ways to screw things up, though. it's nice like that.

Joe
so should I just stick to loading scenes the old fashioned way
n scene files

You get mem leaks in unity often from textures and other assets
really have to be careful

Joe
im trying to iron out loading "level" data for my tilemap from json
come a long way and considering the possibility of just 1 scene used to swap out the level info... thats all just thinking out loud

3:45 AM
lol Almo, I just checked the replay of our league match to see when morg flashed over your ult. that was actually pretty incredible. can't tell if she was anticipating your arrow, or if she was going to flash+ult anyway and just went over the arrow by pure luck...

4:02 AM
either way, it looked miraculous :(

it was. the arrow was like 20px from hitting her.

Q: Would questions about game-engine recommendations be on-topic, given they have clearly stated needs?

dot_Sp0TIs a question asking for a recommendation of a game-engine fitting one's needs on-topic or off-topic? There are SE formats such as rpg.stackexchange.com which allows for recommendation questions about game systems, which seems to be a similar case. What is GDSE's stance here? example: I am ...

Q: Should or shouldn't we introduce a format to ask about game-engine suitability?

dot_Sp0TThis question is a follow-up to the question: Would questions about game-engine recommendations be on-topic, given they have clearly stated needs? The help-centre states: What topics can I ask about here? ... and it is not about... how to get started making a game what la...

good morning GDSE

hey

Joe

my monitors are now too low

Joe
you had a growth spurt over the weekend? :D

hahah no I had my desk lowered at work
we
moved, and the new desk is too high
I mean at work we ended up with new desks

Joe
3:02 PM
ahh gotcha
I've been itching for a standing desk... but I dont think they will spring for one

heheh

Joe
they make monistor shelves? or you can just pump down that office chair pneumatic to the floor

Clint Hocking had one of those just before he left Ubi

Joe
i feel like sitting for 15 hours a day is going to kill me

@Joe hehehe

Jon
3:05 PM
studies show that it will

Joe
all I do is sit anymore

Jon
self-atrophy

Joe
I used to valet cars at a hotel to pay bills at college
I can feel how much less powerful worse off my calves are, I used to run ALL day

Jon
maybe you should become a gerbil and go to the gym

Joe
i've never been to a gym in my life... seems ridiculous to me, but your probably right

Jon
3:08 PM
turn into one of those intense gym people

Protein chug

Jon
where everyone you meet disgusts you and you need to try to convert them into going to the gym and eating right
basically a gym jehova

Joe
that is an accurate term
coin that right now and make tshirts you will be rich

Jon
vegan jehova
the first rule to becoming a vegan, is to always talk about being a vegan
3

Joe
i like the alliteration of Gym Jehova
I guess j - G doesnt matter same sound... english I fail @ you

@Jon how true and fucking annoying

Pip
Eyo
I'm hooked on music in Spanish for some reason :P
@William'MindWorX'Mariager noice!
@William'MindWorX'Mariager FLUIDS
I'm impressed :D

:D
Fluids indeed :D
I'm impressed as well. It actually performs nicely. It's O(1) compared to O(n) for other implementations. The only problem is that each operation is slower with mine. So it's sort of a trade. I can have as many particles as I want, but even empty scenes will have get calculated.

Pip
3:28 PM
Still cool

Pip
Hahaha I'm sitting at the Dota loading screen waiting for a friend and "Dota" by Basshunter started playing on Spotify

Probably won't do much with it besides upload it to Github. It was mostly just a challenge to myself. Get into the parallel thinking. :P

Pip
It looks cool, good job. :D

It all works purely by knowing the previous state of the 8 neighboring pixels. I guess it's very scalable.
I wonder how well it'd perform if I threw it at my CUDA cores.

Pip
3:31 PM
What are those?

Something NVidia cars have.
Lots and lots of processing power. My GPU has like 1k+ CUDA cores.
They're made for general programming, not just graphical.

Pip
Oh, cool

@Pip Spanish is a great language for rap
lots of hard consonants

Pip
mhm

I find french rap sounds odd

Pip
3:36 PM
I was just listening to "Vamos a la Playa"
Not rap, but was pretty good

from Los Lobos?

Pip
from Loona
Whoa video is a bit odd :P

ok

Not my cup of tea :p

Pip
3:41 PM
Lyrics are stupid, sounds good though

from the movie Juice
which I thought was a good movie

3:58 PM
I like it when a band that makes some great music manages to knock a few out of the park again 30 years later.
and this one, accompanied by some dumb video about a fish

@Almo I spent a little too long trying to figure out the roman numerals there... xD

hahah :)

Joe
4:55 PM
"Amnesia Fortnight" During the development of Brütal Legend, a publishing issue arose... Tim Schafer (Double Fine Productions Founder) attempted to boost the company's morale by engaging the team in an "Amnesia Fortnight". For a two-week period, the employees were split into four groups, told to forget their current work on Brütal Legend (hence the "Amnesia"), and tasked to develop a game prototype for review by the other groups.
awesome... they do one every year

that's a neat idea
shame BL was such a boring game. It was fucking funny as hell.
"And we'll call it Ironheade. With an 'e' so they know we're not fuckin' around."

Joe
looks like a majority of their small game ideas stem from prototypes from the Fortnight

spoilers for what
Not clickin that link

Magic the Gathering
:P

5:09 PM
Am I the only one who is struggling to come up with a detailed story for games?

Joe
I struggle with everything else

So....
Time to learn unreal

Joe
30 bucks cheaper
damn

Well considering there isn't a free vs pro license that's pretty good
Full engine source for 5% royalties

Joe
ooo nice
sucks im hesistant to try it.... i might like it

5:16 PM
They seriously improved their website too

Pip
5:42 PM
@SpartanDonut what the faq
I have a license through Github
oh well, worthless now :P

@Veritas i don't design games that need story so it's not an issue for me :)
fuk yeah
really smart

Pip
yeah, it is
It's annoying that I need the Android SDK for Xamarin Studio
At least I can install it on my HDD vs my SSD
Hahahaha
Game Informer says this:
> Epic’s making a smart play here. With more publishers opting for in-house engines, giving people incentive to explore Unreal Engine 4 is smart in the long run. The more great games that are made on the engine, the better Epic looks.

This is near-term investment that has potential to reap big long-term rewards. It also means that Epic, which already does a good job of promoting UE4-based projects, gets another opportunity to tie its name to success.
Also, can someone pin this?
why you no onebox?
there we go

@Pip was starred previously
had 8 stars

Pip
ah, kk
Didn't see it

I don't see a need to pin. People saw it

Pip
5:54 PM
meant star, whoops

So I wonder what sort of pressure that might apply to Unity (if any) regarding it's licensing model

MLM
How did that message get one more star? Room-owner privilege?

The option to star it is in the drop down menu for the message
I starred it seeing if it would jump to the top (or at least be visible from chat) but it didn't

MLM
6:00 PM
Ahh, thanks! I believed once it was in the transcript only you couldn't

@SpartanDonut nice!

Pip
@OMGtechy hey bro
Just got my SSD installed yesterday
massive upgrade

Hey man
Awesome :D did you put the OS on it?

Joe
hmm 5% past $3k / quarter seems pretty good actually

That means you'll only loose 35% of your revenue overall!
It's a little unbelievable how much money those market places make
Compared to a physical store
Well to be fair I don't know... but I doubt Walmart makes $20 on $60 games
lose*

Joe
6:19 PM
steam = 30%?

I don't know if anyone has ever released steam numbers

I don't think they're allowed to

but the mobile marketplaces are 30% all around I believe

Joe
so wait how does unity work?
monetarily

@Joe flat fee

6:20 PM
Unity has a Pro license

Joe
pro = you buy it and you dont kick back?

> Yes you can create and sell a game with the free version of Unity, without paying royalties or any revenue share. However, Unity Free, which includes the free platform add-on products, may not be licensed or used by a commercial entity with annual gross revenues (based on prior fiscal year) in excess of US$100,000, or by an educational, academic, non-profit or government entity with a total annual budget for the entire entity (based on prior fiscal year) in excess of US$100,000.

^

> No, Unity does not charge on a per title basis and you do not pay royalties or pay revenue share, even for games and applications made with the free version.

Joe
googles the difference between royalties and revenue share

6:24 PM
I like Unreals approach to the whole linux editor fiasco; "Ok, if you want it that bad, you do it" xD
Rather than the Unity "no"

user image
3

ahaha
I think it'll be Unity 5 release or release date
If they went open source I'd be like WHA
but glad about it
I bet Unreal timed it just right for that

Pip
@OMGtechy yep, have Win8.1 on it atm :D

awesome, size? did you move your pagefile and hibernate file off?

Pip
It's 128 GB
I haven't put any Linux stuff on it atm, was doing school stuff and needed to use some Windows-only stuff

6:31 PM
You'll deffo want to move them off then

Pip
Yeah

Mine filled up with just Windows 8.1
and I had moved the pagefile and hibernate file off
D:

ok

Pip
:D

6:33 PM
@Lasse what editor?

@OMGtechy scene / game object / etc editor

what for though? Your own engine?

Pip
It doesn't seem that I can move the hibernate file

yeah

Pip
I can probs just disable hibernation though

6:34 PM
@Pip I personally get rid of it entirely
@Lasse what specifically are you having a problem with? :)

Pip
Yeah, I think I will

@OMGtechy I don't have enough time at my hands, I need help to get this open source project good enough for publishing it

@Lasse well if you add me I'll take a look if nothing else?

okay

@Pip can you remove me from RadiantVoid btw, I have no interest in it anymore
Mainly because I don't want to use HipChat
you can keep the object pool and use it as you please

Pip
6:37 PM
:D

@OMGtechy I need to know your user name in bitbucket

@Lasse take a guess ;D

lol

Pip
Avast is constantly using like 20-40% of my CPU :/
God damnit why

Joe
@OMGtechy "catlover1337" ?

6:38 PM
@Joe HOW DID YOU KNOW
@Pip probably filling its cache

Joe
it cant be! thats my username mwuahaha trick

:O

Pip
OMFG WHY AVAST

@Pip did it start when you moved your page file?

^

Pip
6:39 PM
I haven't moved it yet
I just installed Xamarin Studio and it's scanning every single file. Such CPU usage

Then turn off active scan or whatever its called

Pip
It's scanning avery GTK+ dll, everything from Mono, the Android SDK, the JDK
hm, I'll look

@OMGtechy I sent you a message

It's making sure every single file doesn't contain a virus. It's how these things work

Pip
Yeah, it's using a ton of CPU though
It's supposed to be a background thing :P

6:40 PM
quinquagintillion

If you say so

I do say so!

shush you

WITH EMPHASIS

Pip
:D

6:41 PM
@Lasse I got access (no message though?). First thing I'd say is to fill some basic info out in the Wiki. For example, supported platforms

@OMGtechy I sent it through bitbucket, I guess it'll arrive some day

Thursday

I didn't even know you could get messages through bitbucket

Pip
Alright, seriously. I'm actually considering disabling the real-time scan. It's using a ton of CPU and actually froze most of the other processes for about 15s

It's like you don't even listen

Pip
6:43 PM
I listened, sh you

@Pip let it fill its cache
@iKlsR ello :D

Pip
Yeah, hope it does that soon :/
hey @iKlsR

@Pip I use Baidu which is quite nice, but it does get quite a few false positives

Joe
@Pip sh: you: No such file or directory

Pip
:D
@Lasse you mind sharing your repo on Bitbucket? Username is WardBenjamin
Just want to check it out :D

6:45 PM
@OMGtechy @Pip Hi~

@Pip you got it

Pip
cool

I might have to paste the introduction text in there somewhere if more people is going to join in

Pip
yep
I just tried to disable hibernation, and it told me I didn't have permission
WTF WIN8

have you considered a break from computers today?

6:47 PM
here at Microsoft, we know better than you
Microsoft, we really do

Joe
O SNAP! UE is C++? so I can dev on mac NOT IN MONODEVELOP

@Joe you don't like Xcode I take it?

Pip
@SpartanDonut nope
@Joe yes

Joe
abandons 6 months of everything, switches
@OMGtechy xcode for C#?

6:48 PM
Wha
@Lasse I see a README emerging :D

yes
it's the same text I sent you as pm, if you didn't got it yet

Didn't get it, but good to know :D I'm cloning atm

I hope it builds
it should though, my friend successfully built it

Pip
Eyy it finished
noice
Computer just sped up a ton
Also turned off https scanning

Pip
6:57 PM
Yes
So, it turns out that Avast HTTPS scanning doesn't play nice with both Firefox and Spotify
Which are.... both running
welp, glad I turned it off

Yo

glad I don't have antivirus

Pip
Why not?
Hey Noc

I don't have antivirus on my mac

Pip
But... It's a Mac
Macs are special cases

6:59 PM
And that is why you need antivirus
But more seriously
