Pip
12:21 AM
Just went and saw the Martian
fucking amazing

Pip
12:39 AM
holy crap
AMD's new architecture like... matches Skylake
same 14nm architecture
introduction of Hyperthreading (first time for AMD!)
ISA compatible with Haswell/Broadwell style
private L2 and one FPU per core as well

Jon
zen?

Pip
mhm
Alright, not quite as good as skylake
but still massively closes the gap
DDR4 support
Expected Oct. 2016 unfortunately
Cannonlake should be interesting, in other news. Similar release date to Zen
Huh. Intel also recently announced that their 10nm process would be delayed to 2017
Should be a pretty even playing field for a while

1:27 AM
Hi.

Pip
@Almo I might try building a hackintosh
@Almo If I do so, can I get a copy of OSX from you?

Jon
@Pip yeah they are having difficulties making it smaller.. in fact the 14nm chips were also delayed
the 10nm chips are going to be like, the end of the line
moore's law is dead

Pip
1:43 AM
Probably
I'm getting my PC from school next week. If it's hackintosh compatible, I'm going to do it, dual booting OSX and Arch Linux at least
Assuming friends of mine (looks at Almo for last resort) will get me a copy of Yosemite

Jon
@Almo rokit?
cool @Pip, u gotta pay for that shit?

Pip
for OSX? It's a free download but has to be done from a machine already running OSX

Jon
no your pc from school

Pip
so basically you have to buy a Mac or use someone elses
Oh yeah, it's free

Jon
everything is free for you

Pip
1:48 AM
Basically the school gets donated computers from the gov't, companies, etc

Jon
back in my day, we had to pay for VS licenses just to learn it

Pip
and the top students in my A+ Computer System class get them (aka me!)

Jon
heh, nice

Pip
Yeah, it's awesome. I'm probably taking home a Core 2 Duo desktop tower this time around.
Last year a friend of mine brought home a server with a Xeon, a Chromebook, an i5 laptop, and a tower of some sort
he was the top student last year, I'm the top student this year

Jon
core 2 duo is what I upgraded from

Pip
2:01 AM
It seems like a cheap processor that's still okay-ish. Works for me for now!

1 hour later…
3:18 AM
AMD was on the right route with the integrated GPU on-core, and just scheduling the FPU out of there instead...
A good instruction re-scheduler would be able to take most loop[nez] instructions, and just start pumping the code into the VLIW FPUs until it hits the lower label.
Effectively... automatically paralleling tight loops into the on-board GPU... it's a wonderful vision anyways
but I guess FPU-per-core is kinda cool too

3:33 AM
@Pip it's not that simple.
I don't "have" a copy of OSX. It just comes with the computer
I've heard of people installing it on PCs, but that might have been when you could still get a CD of the OS
I'm not sure you can anymore.
My computer doesn't even have a CD/DVD drive.
iMacs still have CD drives though so maybe

user4704
You can make a bootable USB stick from an installer downloaded from the app store.

user4704
I do it for clean installs.

5:27 AM
Just did a 29.42 second solve. That's pretty good.
Woot.
For great justice.
@Almo My solution: Readed. It looks dumb right now, but I think all past tenses should be the same as the word with a suffix at the end.
But maybe it should be spelled ryd and not read. Every letter should make one sound and one sound only.
Which is why X, C, and Q are stupid.
And why "is" should either be pronounced the way it's spelled, or be spelled "iz".
How much sense does it make for the sounds T and H to somehow make a þ sound when put together as "th"?

Morning

Good morning dude guy

Q: Platformer Tile Map Collision Help

PlatyPiI've been working on a small platformer as a simple project but, I'm having troubles with my collision detection. What I want is that as the player falls due to gravity, it will stop when it touches the ground it'll stop the y from updating, but not the x from updating. I'm having troubles with t...

user92578
is answered here?

Q: Entity to tile collision detection (C++, SDL)

TriforcerI'm currently trying to handle collisions between entities and a tilemap, but I've hit a problem. My tiles are stored simply as integer tile IDs in a multidimensional array, and I wanted to perform a quick collision check by working out which tile the player is on (or will be on if the new positi...

6:15 AM
sorry bro too many Fs required to deal with all that code everywhere

user92578
6:47 AM
thanks

you're welcome, I otherwise would have marked it as a "debug my code" :P

user92578
the first one totally is one

user92578
7:05 AM

user92578
Some small progress

user92578

@Tyyppi_77 made me think of i.ytimg.com/vi/AqturoCh5lM/hqdefault.jpg

user92578
Nice! That's what I'm kinda going for

user92578
10:43 AM
Stupid question, but how do I initialize const TString g_LevelEntityTypeNames[(int)ELevelEntityType::NUM_LEVELENTITYTYPE];?

user92578
That's just declared at the end of a header file

user92578
And I can't seem to be able to do this:

user92578
const TString g_LevelEntityTypeNames[] = {
	"Entity",
	"Entity Blade",

user92578
It complains about redefinition

user92578
ah, extern

> Oh, and bring your sense of humor. Just in case.
that's dangerous if someone has very dark sense of humor

I have this sad feeling that the author is trying to be serious:

11:57 AM
@AidanMueller Readed would be good enough for me
@tereško what a fucking idiot
it's easy to see the difference between 60 and 30
I'm willing to bet I could tell thedifference between 60 and 120 as well

maybe his eyes are just bad and he thinks it's the same for everyone else

could be
or he's never done an A/B comparison
PS1 Gran Turismo had "GT HiFi" mode which stripped the game down so it could run at 60 FPS. Was sooooo different.
then you get people saying NTSC is 60 fields per second, 30 FPS, so you guys are stupid
But the game engines ran 60 fps, and did not wait for two fields to render a full frame
so they're the stupid ones

user92578
You guys probably have peer-review rights or something?

Q: SDL -- What am I doing wrong with SDL_LockTexture()?

SDLDude9283I'm trying to use SDL_LockTexture and SDL_UnlockTexture for direct access to pixels in SDL 2.0. When I try to set pixels, I never see anything happen. Here's my code: void *pixels; int pitch; SDL_LockTexture(mytexture, NULL, &pixels, &pitch); // Set pixel 100,100 to blue ((uint32_t *)pixels)[1...

no idea

user92578

oh
I do have that

user92578
12:08 PM

user92578

user92578
Who would favorite that question tough?

12:10 PM
I got only 1200 fake internet points :(

user92578

I see 186

user92578

user92578

12:15 PM
Network rep takes a bit to propogate to chat probably

user92578
12:57 PM
@MickLH I thought I'd just ping you with this gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/98641/…

1:15 PM
is this sentence grammatically wrong? "this is a test and it seems I can not translate well."
I mean google translate says it is... but it doesn't seem to be wrong...

user92578
looks right to me

user92578
Is it considered bad to answer old questions that are really "debugging code"-heavy?

user92578
actually nvm

@MickLH @Tyyppi_77 if I may have a word about that question, MickLH has a point. Textures and Surfaces are separated for a reason. But (and it's a big but) it really depends on your use. if it's a texture that you might change every 10 seconds, keeping a copy of it cpu side all the time might not be the best practice.
otherwise as MickLH suggested you should use surfaces...
but then again... as MickLH suggested working with texture data might be harder than working with surfaces.
for example, if you are working with a surface, you can explicitly choose the pixel format the surface is working with. But according to GL specifications, driver is allowed to choose a pixel format as it feels, and your request is merely a hint (which might be completely ignored)
all these matters should be considered when writing a code.

user92578
1:38 PM
all very valid points

user92578
However if I were to add let's say custom shirt colours to my players, I would probably just modify the texture data directly

user92578
yeah?

user92578

user92578
I added a buttload of entities to the editor

Jon
1:57 PM

Pip
@Tyyppi_77 I passed it a while ago. I left ads on for SE before I hit 200 rep because ad revenue is good and I like this site... but now I'm at 1.2k rep :P

The environments in that game looks great.

user92578
Man HIMYM was an awesome show

Pip
2:27 PM
Anyone here watch the WAN Show?

user92578

user92578
I'm trying to look for a series to fill the hole I've got now

user92578
The Finnish Netflix just doesn't have that many good comedy series

Pip
Silicon Valley?
Halt and Catch Fire?
The IT Crowd?

user92578
I would totally be interested in Silicon Valley and the IT Crowd

user92578
2:33 PM
Neither seem to be in Netflix

Pip
Aww that sucks

user92578
2:50 PM
yeah

user92578

3:31 PM
Hi.

user92578

3:49 PM
FUCK how hard can it be to edit "About Me" on blogger. >:(
still can't find it
even searching google for how to do it turns up unanswererd questions I upvoted years ago.

Pip

user92578

superuser says "not for websites"

So
@Jon any ideas for a roughly 50-60 dollar christmas gift for me? My extended family will be in town for thanksgiving and we're having "Christmas" then. My grandparents last year got me a refurbished monitor (~55 bucks) so I'm looking for something else around that price range for this year
(CC @Almo @Tyyppi_77 @TheMuffinCoder)

you like good mice?
or good headphones?

Pip
I have a decent mouse and a headset that works for me (actually, now to think of it my headset was like $60 :P)

I mean headphoens for good music not headset for computer shit with talking to other people

Pip
It's decent for music as well, meh
Any other ideas?

Sounds like you're not really into music :)
you like boardgames at all?
I can recommend some good ones

8:40 PM
I'd vote for board games

Pip
go ahead!

Carcassonne or Settlers of Catan

Pip
Settlers of Catan is a great game

sort that by my rating

Jon
8:41 PM
hummmmm
fallout 4 :D

Catan is not a great game. it has a shitty randomizer that leaves you out of the game if it fucks up

Jon
@Almo you are in montreal?

Particular ones not to miss: Power Grid, Cosmic Encounter, Puerto Rico, Agricola
yes Jon
Carcassonne is quite light, but fun if you don't mind a really large random element. It doesn't leave you out of the game like Catan does. It may cause you to lose, but you still get to play.

how about card games? Munchkin, Cards against humanity, Android netrunner

Tichu
CAH is Apples to Apples with anal beads.
if that's your thing, then you'll like it.

Pip
8:44 PM
@Lasse I have those first two
What's Android Netrunner?
Although I'm missing some expansions for them

android netrunner is one of the top rated living card games
one player plays a corporation that tries to cash in agendas, and other player plays a hacker that tries to steal the agendas

Pip
Huh cool

Android Netrunner is like Magic the Gathering but asymmetric (aww yeah) and you don't have to buy randomized packs, you can just buy the expansions all at once.

I have a full set of the original netrunnger
if the new one is anything like the old one, it's really good

And if you're looking for boardgame reviews, Shut Up & Sit Down is the place to go.

Pip
8:47 PM
On a totally unrelated note: ooh maybe I could ask for a part for my hackintosh if the PC I'm getting next week isn't completely compatible

Not one person ever found agenda in my archives

Pip
Know of any cheap but decent graphics card?

not that there were never agendas there...
but they were never there at the moment a runner looked :)

Ooh ooh Spyfall is a great game by the way. Excellent at parties or.. anywhere, really.

Jon
fucken rockit league
whos in
shut up

8:57 PM
hahah

Jon
9:27 PM
i wrote a book on how to gracefully get your dick out at parties
need a good TV show recommendation
i think i might rewatch workaholics

what's the book called? I got a collection but none of them says anything about doing it gracefully

thanks

Jon
9:42 PM
I hope you enjoy

it seems solid, it tells you what god thinks

Jon
nothing else matters

@Tyyppi_77 I don't even have the energy to sigh. I literally just closed the window the first time around and had to come back later ready to chat.

Jon
fuck the truth
accept the word of god, as written by man
Smith said he found the plates on September 22, 1823, at a hill near his home in Manchester, New York, after the angel Moroni directed him to a buried stone box. Smith said the angel at first prevented him from taking the plates, but instructed him to return to the same location in a year.
In September 1827, on his fourth annual attempt to retrieve the plates, Smith returned home with a heavy object wrapped in a frock, which he then put in a box. Though he allowed others to heft the box, he said that the angel had forbidden him to show the plates to anyone until they had been translated from their original "reformed Egyptian" language. Smith dictated the text of the Book of Mormon over the next several years, claiming that it was a translation of the plates.
He did this by using a seer stone, which he placed in the bottom of a hat and then placed the hat over his face to view the words written within the stone.[3] Smith published the translation in 1830 as the Book of Mormon.
aka... Mormons are fucken crazy

Pip
mhm

9:51 PM
Please, @Jon, I'm struggling with my sanity already, please don't remind me that these people literally, actually exist.

if you think about the babylonian flood thing, that one guy got warned by the gods through a talking wall
aliens
The Gilgamesh flood myth is a flood myth in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Many scholars believe that the flood myth was added to Tablet XI in the "standard version" of the Gilgamesh Epic by an editor who utilized the flood story from the Epic of Atrahasis. A short reference to the flood myth is also present in the much older Sumerian Gilgamesh poems, from which the later Babylonian versions drew much of their inspiration and subject matter. == HistoryEdit == Gilgamesh’s supposed historical reign is believed to have been approximately 2700 BCE, shortly before the earliest known written stories. Why do we even record subjective history crap?
Why don't we just have an objective record of what methods work best for what purposes, given which materials?

because philosophy

Why do we even record subjective philosophy crap? I'm joking I know why.
But I genuinely think that people who can't come up with a philosophy should just have their crisis and if it ends bad, well some lives end bad.

philosophy and bureaucratism has a lot in common, you need more bureaucratism to support bureaucratism

10:02 PM
As long as all the objectively best methods for everything are public domain knowledge anyways...
g2g
Hating socializing too much lol

lol
eh, I guess the correct word was bureaucracism

Jon
