wow fuck

is that like a normal fuck, but surprising?

not really sure :/

It's more of a confused wow then.

wow upsidedown is MOM

Dog backwards is God
just think about that for a moment

12:35 AM
does that mean when you are looking at a dog from behind, you are actually looking at god?
2

Yes.

1:05 AM
You know what you get if you cross a dyslexic with an insomiac with an agnostic?
Someone who stay up all night wondering if there's a dog.

well, except that an agnostic asserts that he doesn't know. someone still in the process of wondering is simply undecided, not agnostic.
>.>
I love ruining jokes

he could still be wondering though
your definition of agnostic is narrow

mm, perhaps

1:27 AM
EVE, LoL, or Starbound... decisions...

2:04 AM
LOL
@IcyDefiance lol

LoL?

yeah

I went to starbound, but have no one to play with atm anyway, so okay

ok

7:47 AM
good morning

Good morning!
Anything exciting going on?

I thought about creating a Mick meme (Dumbledore with a crocodile's head, the "Dumbledile"), but I was shocked when I realized that I totally lack the photoshop skills for that
so no. howabout you?

Meh. I still have to finish a game before Friday, so that's fun.

2 hours later…

answer of mine for you guys to vote down: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/83893/…
I say that because it is an unpopular opinion on the subject.
but I'll take the negative rep to have it listed

1:42 PM
it depends how they define backtracking ... if it's purely about "going back to a place I already went to" ... well ... making something different about it the second time round might help ... Guild Wars does this pretty well IMO.

yeah, that choices v conseqeunces vid is awesome
I played heavy rain, and that thumb decision was tough
or finger, or whatever it was

@Christoph You think this is a game?

@MickLH sorry - what!?

@Almo I'm liking the idea of consequenses in a game
like the "poking the bear" scenario
I go find a uber strong mob and piss it off ... i then later find him following me around

1:51 PM
as the guy says, it can work fine if implemented properly

I will only accept my own mortality as proven when my immortality was disproven in at least one case.

just to be safe

haha

I came up with a new type of website engine, not sure what to call it yet, it's designed to optimize the workflow when you redirect annoying requests from management onto the less skilled developers / designers

sounds like an SEP field

2:04 PM
@MickLH so its basically the same as every professional CMS out there ?

Yeah, except it actually works because it's not some massive overblown implementation of "simple" with a million features and a complex configuration
It does some fun tricks that I haven't seen in any CMS either
The basic paradigm of operation is a minimal template processor, so you don't have to know how to use it at all. Anyone who can edit HTML can edit the website without training
But it also re-writes the DOM and scopes the CSS, so that loading forms with the template engine isn't dependent on page CSS

you guys know what an SEP field is? It's the Hitchhiker's universe equivalent of a cloaking device. It erects a field around whatever you want to cloak that convinces any observer that whatever is contained within is Somebody Else's Problem.

lol it really is that, it was explained to me that I was hired specifically to write a program to accomplish that function, because upper management has a problem with micromanagement and they are ruining the productivity of the skilled programmers

hehehe :)

2:22 PM
There's this one guy, he's genuinely skilled at having a micromanagement problem. He's efficient like a binary search at finding the pathelogical case that halts productivity, figuring out within 3 - 5 requests what he has to ask for that will take at least a week of breaking perfectly good code to accomplish.
And it's never, ever, ever for good reason, it's always something you could have just distracted him from and he would have forgotten about forever.

@MickLH my CMS works like this ?

Cool wardy

I wrote it years ago :) ... but i'm a web developer professionally so I'm probably up to date in this area
this is what appealed to me about using Awesomium as an in game GUI platform

Lol do you know that I'm a web developer professionally?

No i figured you were in game dev or something

2:29 PM
I actually have never made a dime on gamedev
I only do it for fun

My CMS is effectively a layer sat on top of an "object management system" ... CMS is one app i built on top of it
i then built a document system
and a few other apps

I sold this group my last CMS, and they love it and still use it, but it requires programmers to make structural changes. (Although it integrates TinyMCE & Aloha & Ace and handles users & file checkout / history etc)
does WYSIWYG editing of not just pages but even database content that gets dynamically inserted into pages, if you have credentials to do so
drag and drop upload / replacement of pictures & video, basically all the fun stuff I'd enjoy implementing
But it's too hard for complete idiots to skin it without breaking the CSS
So even if they redirect the wrath of management onto india, somebody good still has to come clean up

lol

3:13 PM
So... let's talk Jam dates

@MickLH to my knowledge, nope. not everyone. most can't grasp the essentials. I've tried in the past

Last year, it was on November 1st, but what works for people?

or am I missing something

Maybe I should start a meta
Or... that would be a mess

a mess? why?

3:15 PM
@Lasse stop making messes

Well... we've never really "voted" on jam dates before, and what are people really going to say?

@Lasse I'm not sure what you're referring to

@MickLH apparently me neither, are you talking about editing pure html or moving some gui boxes around?

Just editing raw HTML files, whether it's through a text editor or a GUI

@JohnMcDonald I thought the date was chosen by someone proposing a date and then three people saying "okay with me" and went with that. Isn't that voting? :D

3:19 PM
heh. Alright: the weekend of November 1st
I'll put up a preparations post with the Pot-Luck submission link, :)

how many days? from friday or saturday?

Ideally, I'd like it run from Friday evening, through Sunday at midnight for everyone's timezone. Thanks to the world being round and all, this means that the official start/end dates are quite wide.
Basically, if you're in Honolulu, the jam will start Friday evening, but if you're in Europe, the jam will be starting Friday very early morning
At any rate, plan for Friday evening through Sunday night. Anything more is cheating ;)

yeah I'm at work on friday anyways :P

Likewise

so yeah, the date is fine with me. I don't know yet any other plans
now two more people :D

3:32 PM
Date looks good to me, though I don't usually know what I'm going to be doing on a particular date this far in advance.

Weird and amazing song ^

3:59 PM
I think it's got really cool beat.
but it tries to be..... "weird"

So... I'm hooking up the potluck form on google drive and am starting to second guess forcing an email address out of people
Is there a better way to give participants their words? Maybe just an update to the jam thread instead?
Yeah... that's what I'll do

@JohnMcDonald if the theme is good I may compete

It's a Pot Luck theme, :)

First GDSE game jam had a lame theme
oh, multiple themes or what?
@BlueBug I like it for that.

Oh man the Unity docs look pretty terrible now

4:09 PM
So, you, and all other potential participants will submit 5 words. When the jam starts, you, everyone else will receive 5 of the submitted words at random. You pick 2-3 of the provided words, and there's your theme
14
A: The anniversary gamejam

AnkoPotluck Jam Just riffing off of the meta jam and cake jam ideas here. Thanks Michijan28 @ Wikimedia Commons Before the start, everyone submits 5 "foods" (English words) into a common "buffet". At the start, the words are shuffled and dealt to participants, so everyone has 5 random words fro...

@JohnMcDonald might join, but it would be lame to get only lame themes while some people could get god tier themes

Yeah, I'm going to have to do some curation I think
And bug people that put in flat words
We'll see. Alternatively, I could say: If you submit words that are hard to work with, you will be given those words
Or... get people to submit more words (8?), and hand-pick the best 5 of those, then randomly assign those?

MLM
Just say you have to have 5 accepted words to compete

I donno

I've been trying and it's pretty difficult to come up with words that are interesting enough

MLM
4:14 PM
Just place the burden on them to please you

I still think ninja-like things trumps all

Ugh... why does Vector3.forward * myFloat compile but not Vector3.Angle(vec1, vec2)?

Can someone experiment with how easy/hard it is to modify your words after submitting. docs.google.com/forms/d/… (This is the live form, but I will wipe the answers submitted in the next hour)

Vector3.forward and Vector3.Angle() both return a Vector3.
@JohnMcDonald pretty easy
Clicking 'edit response' just returns you to the form where you can change your words

MLM
@JohnMcDonald easy, but not sure how to find the link to edit after I leave

4:19 PM
@MLM If you click the primary link after you submit, what happens? Can you edit from there?

MLM
@JohnMcDonald no

hmm
Look at that, Google provided this tooltip automatically:

4:33 PM
Well... I can tell people to remember that link, but most people won't. Multiple answers can be submitted, and I can take only the most recent one, but that doesn't help you remember what you entered last time. Do we just want the result set to be public? Or... should I just remind people of their submission on request?

MLM
@JohnMcDonald It is possible to remember their unique slug for them using the google forms service scripting but I am not sure how you would transfer it to them when they want to edit.

Well... can't hurt to try. Next the issue is going to be that anyone with that URL can modify the answers
Maybe there's another survey system that will be better for this, :/

@JohnMcDonald invite them specifically
so everyone can edit, but if someone tries to troll, you will know who it is, and can roll it back.

5:15 PM
:/ That's not exactly how the google survey works
Just tried survey monkey, and it looks like it will barely work. Users can edit their own replies pretty easily, but on my end, there's no CSV export (unless I pay), so I have to open each reply one by one.

@MickLH just talked to the programmer with more business sense about Lowest Number. We'll be removing IAP from it, and just do it ad-supported. Like a banner in the client, and on the data site.
IAP is too much of a hassle to be worth it; since it's a niche title anyway, we're better off just getting it out there and see what kind of traffic it generates
since the webhost is already paid for for another reason, the game doesn't cost us anything more than dev time to make
well, except a few licenses, but no serious ongoing costs.

5:55 PM
@byte56 I think that question was fine, but you're the mod, so I won't complain further. :)

I agree with byte putting that on hold, but not for the reason he gave. The OP should've posted a much more limited selection of code. Few people are willing to read that much. Of course, in this particular case it would be real easy to just edit the question that way.
actually, looking at the meta thread linked by the on hold message, there's an even stronger argument supporting that question being closed.
> The key word in "debug my code" is my.
> if you're posting whole functions from your own code and are asking people to find the bug you put in your own implementation, that's asking other people to debug your code for you, which is against the site's current rules.

Makes sense to me

@Almo but yeah. He just needs to cache the result of playerHit()

6:11 PM
byte just made the edit I was thinking of and reopened the question.
tbh I would rather see it stay closed, but I'm an asshole, so whatever

hahaha

Actually, I'd vote to close it as a programming question, not specific to game development (instead of a debugging question).

that also makes sense
most of my SE answering is on SO, and I forget here that there are programming questions, but they should be related to game-dev specifically, and that one wasn't.

It's really just a noob mistake. That a little bit of thinking would solve.
I'll let the community vote if they want to close it though.

Q: New payment option on Paypal "Enter your online banking ID + password": Is my password sent to Paypal?

Nicolas RaoulPaypal has a new payment option called "Bank Account" which says: Enter your online banking ID + password QUESTION: Is my password sent to Paypal? Or is there a kind of protocol involving the bank's server, which makes this actually safe? Notes: Seen from Japan, on Firefox 32.0 Ubuntu 20...

look how the guy censored his account details in the image :D

Ey java devs, can interface classes implement other interfaces?
Which will then be auto implemented on any classes that implement the subinterface

interface classes?
are you asking if an interface can inherit from another interface?

no, I'm asking if we're playing LoL again tonight
gotta get you into S3

maaaybe. depends on whether I skip class tonight. I'm considering it, because they're just going to head to artprize and take pictures instead of actually teaching anything.

haaha ok

6:51 PM
@IcyDefiance yea
example: interface A
interface B implements A

class C implements B
// will that contain As methods too?

google says yes, you can do that, but interface B has to extend interface A, not implement

B is not implementing A, it is simply inheriting it. if class C wants to implement B, then it has to implement all it's methods, which include the ones it inherited from A.

7:15 PM
@Almo lol, first I thought it was kinda odd representation of his order :D

hahaha :D

Jon
I said "let their be light" and hit compile, and it failed.
was suppose to be there

it's because you should have used "there", not "their"
compilers don't like bad grammar

Jon
i'm a horrible god

This is why I like to close things fast when I can: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/83939/…
Why post an answer when you can vote to close?

Jon
7:28 PM
i'm done with politics
you know, if you stop reading and participating in politics, your life becomes 96% more happier?
that's not a fact, but it should be

@Byte56 I suspect people just see a question, say "I know this one!" and don't even consider duplicates

@Jon That's like saying, "If you just let other people decide everything for you, life is much easier!"

Jon
ignorance is bliss

@SpartanDonut yeah, I did that, but then I saw "1 new comment" and loaded it to see the duplicate links. then I upvoted the comment and moved on, since I couldn't vote to close.

Jon
you ever meet a girl, and get a immediate connection, and then can't stop thinking about her?

7:31 PM
@IcyDefiance I thought about that and I think it could be as easily overlooked. It's a bit irresponsible but it's likely what happened
Or maybe it was deliberately ignored... we'll never know
Frankly I'm ok with questions that are definitely duplicates, definitely off topic, etc. being closed by a single mod. It really shouldn't have to come down to that but I'm ok with that
lol yes

Well, people disagree on "definitely duplicate, definitely off topic"

Yeah I was just going to say that the idea of definitely being duplicate or off topic is subjective in itself

Jon
nazi mods lol

@Jon yup. more times than I would like to admit.

Congressman seeks ban to stop federal employees from watching porn all day. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/in-the-loop/wp/2014/09/24/congressman-seeks-ban-to-stop-federal-employees-from-watching-porn-all-day/
"a senior-level employee was caught spending as much as six hours of his day looking at porn...and viewed more than 7,000 pornographic files" and 4 months later "the porn-watching employee is still employed but on leave, but could not comment further because of the ongoing investigation"
I guess it would take more than 4 months to "investigate" that much porn

Jon
7:45 PM
That prompted Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) to introduce a bill the day Congress left town to make it a uniform federal government law that employees cannot look at porn at work.
One guy, ruins it for everyone.

Considering those are standard rules at most places where people use computers, it sounds pretty reasonable.

lol no he didn't ruin anything. he should be fired, not thrown in jail.
you don't need a law for that
the only reason anyone would even consider a law against porn is because of religion

Jon
well, it says a federal government law.. probably == to getting fired
if i own a hot dog stand, and I wanna look at porn between customers, who the hell are you to stop me

ehh, I guess jail isn't the only possible penalty
but you still don't need a law to fire someone

Jon
lol, anyways, pass a common sense law
if you are caught doing something stupid, go to jail

7:50 PM
if you are caught *doing something that hurts or endangers others
anything else, who cares

Jon
we need more jails man
you can't have totalitarianism without jails

Ha. Yeah, the US doesn't have enough jails.

hahahaha

Jon
this just in, thin aluminum sheets bend when you put enough pressure

hahahah

8:05 PM
lol the headlines for that are the best
Apple fans' tight pants are bending the iPhone 6 Plus: dailydot.com/technology/iphone-6-plus-bendgate
Is the iPhone 6 too bendy, or are your skinny jeans just too skinny? extremetech.com/computing/…

They're selling the repair kit already:

inb4 kids don't know what that is

Jon
that is hilarious

8:07 PM
What? It's not like rolling pins have been phased out. Kids know what they are.

Jon
yeah man, i still beat my kids with rolling pins
its like tradition

@Byte56 home cooking and family meals are kind of phased out (just a very limited observation)

kids won't really know what LPs are, or maybe typewriters
or 8-track tapes

@SpartanDonut I suppose there is that.

Jon
8:08 PM
I tried bending my M8
pffft

I realize it's a stretch but that's what I was basing it on I suppose... though I guess the rolling pin is more of a baking thing... and I have no observations on how many families still bake

8-tracks are the most monumentally dumb audio format I've seen. So you PULL the tape through with a roller, and to listen to an album, you must play the tape 4 times.

Jon
did you see the android bend test follow up?

Or at least bake somethign that requires dough to be rolled...

and the albums are usually rearranged to fit with fewer fade-out-fade-ins in the middle of the song when the tape passes its loop splice.

Jon
8:10 PM
Watch this

is that thing rubber or something?

Jon
thicker :)
you watch extant? they smash glass phones all over the place

@Jon wow

8:25 PM
@Jon That's why I love samsung phones. They are tough
The have a robotic ass in a factory that sits on them over and over.

MLM
I am trying to squash some commits in Git. I do the git rebase --interactive HEAD~8 which brings up a file in Sublime. I change all of them to squash except the first I leave as pick. I save but the second file does not open for the commit message does not come up. Back in powershell I see Successfully rebased and updated refs/heads/master.. I'm not sure what to do after that happens.

Jon
they have 1000 robotic asses
awaiting orders

@MLM I know some of those words
@Jon

Well shit... now I'm stuck on YouTube watching video after video of Extra Credits

they're cool :)

Jon
8:33 PM
value1 + (value2 - value1) * amount

value1 (1 + (value2 / value 1 - 1) * amount
you know all that homework about "simplify the expression?"
how about, "complicate the expression"

Jon
yeah
write a code obfuscator

:)
I did, many years ago

Jon
it just iterates over code and makes it stupid

though it was just the usual renaming and line-joining

Jon
8:35 PM
i've never written one

was for shortening javascript game downloads
i guess it would be called minification today

fixed a bug
damn
it looks like inheriting from MonoBehavior results class to loss its unique reference
a = new Apple(); b = new Orange(); List<Fruit>(){a,b}.remove(apple) works// correctly removes a from the list
but it would not work(just remove whatever is first element) if Fruit, base class, was inheriting MonoBehavior

@BlueBug I don't believe you. unless you mean .Remove(Apple)

i mean, List<Fruit>(){a,b}. r Remove( apple a)
oh lol xD Capital letter...ah. Why do some functions start with capital letter while some others don't.

I assume the API was written based on UnityScript (JavaScript like) standards

8:47 PM
.Remove is referring to List<> in Mono/.NET, and their naming convention is with Capital Letters.
in c++ STL, it's .remove()
since their naming convention is not capital
Am I the only one who reads "numpy" like "lumpy"?

ah! so in c#, method names start with a capital letter, usually?

in my experience, yes

(switching first letter of all the methods to capital now... humming )

@BlueBug remove(a) doesn't work if a inherits from Monobehavior?
that sounds pretty friggin weird to me

I know
spent the entire... um... morning trying to find out why

8:55 PM
yeah in C# all method names usually start with a capital letter. I've seen private methods starting with a lowercase letter, but it's not common.
public methods starting with a lowercase letter, though, are an abomination unto god
same with public variables. *glares at unity*
but I'm surprised you're not using an IDE with autocomplete that just tells you the method name

I don't even understand how inheriting from Monobehavior could break list.Remove

> If type T implements the IEquatable<T> generic interface, the equality comparer is the Equals method of that interface; otherwise, the default equality comparer is Object.Equals.
if Monobehavior overrides .Equals() and it throws an exception or something, that would do it
if they don't do that...then yeah I have no idea either

haha I read that as "IEquitable" at first. Like somehow it's an interface that treats objects with fairness. :D
2
@IcyDefiance your comment about "would embarass a second-rate fantasy novelist" was pretty funny.
(though you forgot the hyphen)

What's this about Unity exploding?

you mean my blog post? lol I just copy/pasted the quote.
I'm more surprised that someone looked at my blog...
what kind of crazy person would do that?

9:09 PM
FYI, Unity Monobehaviour does override the equality operator.

yeah I got that far, then stopped before figuring out what the operator contains

How do we do the strikethrough on posts?

I guess work is over, I can look into that a bit farther
\---like this---

yeah

9:11 PM
Thanks

noooo not funnyjunk

that's a good one
trust me

fuck it, I have adblock, so I won't give them money
4

hahahah

haha

9:13 PM
why would you star that :'(
making me look like a horrible person

you're not a horrible person?
well, I guess I can tell that from your LoL behavior. Impatient, maybe, but not horrible. ;)
this guy is a good teammate

no I totally am a horrible person, but when people actually think that about me it makes interaction with them difficult
lol nah I'm only horrible in areas where I think the social norms are stupid

hehehe
:)

anyway, monobehavior.equals...
gotta figure out how to use unity again just to access the stupid class

9:33 PM
public override bool Equals (object o)
{
    return Object.CompareBaseObjects (this, o as Object);
}
Object is UnityEngine.Object, object is System.object
and that's as far as I can track this thing
CompareBaseObjects is not in the decompiled class, so I have no idea what it's doing
and holy shit Object looks like a misspelling now
so I guess that doesn't help any

#IcyDefiance I do use IDE with autocomplete, but I have been doing wrongness unto heaven's by starting method with a lowercase letter.
I am trying to redeem my soul by switching all the initial letters of method to capital and its almost done now.
I can only have that my work on earth maybe enough to be given second chance, redeem myself from, Android Hell.

9:51 PM
yeah it's all good as long as no one else has made something using your code that you're now breaking by changing the function names :P

2 hours later…
11:56 PM
:D This potluck should be interesting

Q: Anniversary Game Jam Preparations

Every quarter since then, we've continued the tradition with a seasonal game jam, with the summer jam having as many entrants as the previous two combined! Let's keep these jams thriving! Them...
