3:35 PM
Happy Eid ul fetr everyone!

You too!

I feel awful, got too many things to do, but doing feel like doing anything
bruno mars described my current feeling well enough

Probably a good idea to watch the Grand Finals SC2 match for Gamescom then :P

what if I don't have a connection good enough to see an streaming game?

Then.... you should probably cry
Also
the video you linked is frightening
those Monkeys are creepy.
And that dudes hair

3:43 PM
:(

lol :P

my dota2 client doesn't connect to server, so I guess there is only one thing to do
:'(

Hello there!

hi saad
@saadtaame I assume افران is arabic right?

Right, Arabic characters.
The word itself does not belong to Arabic

3:47 PM
well, I could have guessed both.

Do you understand Arabic?

not so good
just a little.

Are you a linguist?
:D

nope, I'm an iranian.

Okay
So, what's the discussion hinging around here?
By the way, Eid Mubarak!

3:50 PM
right now the most active discussion is this one between me and you.
before that I was celebrating eid.
and before that the room was quite inactive for a day or two.

Tell me a bit about your current game project
Battery

This room is generally pretty quiet but we've got a few people who are on quite often regardless of whether or not people are actually talking

@saadtaame I don't really know where to start.
I suggest you check the blog yourself.
there is a basic idea of some people chasing after each other.
which one of my friends turned into a game when I was at 8th grade.
around a year ago I've rewritten that game (which is the first release on the blog) with a little bit enhancements in the algorithms.
and after that I'm adding more features little by little

I see
I used SDL once

there is no solid documents written anywhere.

3:56 PM
Simple Directmedia Layer

@saadtaame if I'm not wrong my friends used a library I've created with SDL back then
it was a little port of bgi.
with a little bit fancy features.
like alpha blending and these kinda things.

What's bgi?

though I've written all blending functions myself which were running on CPU, so you could not use more than 2 layers actively.
@saadtaame "borland graphic interface"
it's a handy library if you ask.
though it's performance is not that good, but still you can easily prototype some games with it.

I think I've used this before, graphics.h

yep, you had to include that header in TC (turbo C)
and BC (Borland C)

4:03 PM
What's a port exactly? Wrappers for functions in bgi?

not exactly I guess,
or at least I don't believe it means that.
I've never looked it up in dictionary.

How did you write one?

but always people use it to say they provide same functionality with same interface but with something else in the back end aka. implementation.
@saadtaame here is my header codepaste.net/bf4tqp

is this the actual port?

and this is the implementation : codepaste.net/j3tjyn
it just provides you a semi-similar interface.
I guess most people don't count that one as a port
Dota2 spectator client is out! now for everyone for free!

4:14 PM
Does it support people casting the game while others spectate?
I feel like the people casting keep SC2 interesting to watch

"casting the game"?
you mean like saying what is going on and these kinda stuff?

yes it allows.
actually right now these features are only available if you watch tournament games.

but it's said to be released to public once the game gets out of beta

4:16 PM
Tournaments are more exciting anyway

tournaments are expensive to watch :(
most of them cost just $1 or $2 to watch all the games, but international cup had tickets with cost of $49.

My professor loves to say jeeze :D

also there will be some extra features which are restricted to pro players. like having clans and playing over lan.
@saadtaame @ToddersLegrande and I thought "jeeze" was a persian word :D

lol I have no clue
I assumed jeeze came about as an alternative to "jesus"
but I never looked into it

4:21 PM
I'd say jeeze came from the sound you hear when something hot get's near water

so jeeze has a complete different meaning in persian

yep, jeeze in persian is completely different .
جیز [jiz] is something you should not touch, mostly because it'll burn you.
but it's usually used when people speak to children.

so it's a general term for things that burn you if you touch them

4:27 PM
In English, I'm pretty sure sure there's no 1 word to describe that: red hot, boiling hot
Scalding maybe?

Scalding is a good one
but yeah... lots of words

what about scorching?
but as I said it's not something people use in their everyday speech.

I think of scorching as being big fires or the sun (technically also a big fire)

incendiary, scorching, fiery, searing, incinerating
stinging, pungent, tart, savory, snappy, scorching
from google

Scorching desert

4:31 PM
And why is the desert scorching?

actually it has a completely different usages when grown ups use it.

I dunno. I'm pretty sure I've heard it used that way
Might have been scorching hot desert

Yeah, because of the SUN

lol
touche

hit the scorching road
aka go to hell

4:32 PM
hmm, never heard that one

my own invention

but that's pretty logical
@JohnMcDonald @ToddersLegrande just out of curiosity how much is an average wage for someone like me in your companies?

Based solely on my experience through different companies, it seems entry level would start somewhere between $45-65k / year and senior level probably from $65k-85k / year and then management would go up higher from there

Intro Programmers (those without at least 2 years of working experience in the field) will make between $35k and $60k per year with a degree in Comp. Sci., Software Engineering, or sometimes Computer Engineering

This is just speculation based on my salaries, other peoples salaries, and could vary between consulting and regular company roles

4:37 PM
$65k = $65000?

Correct

yes
My figure is in Canadian Dollars, not that it should matter much

@ToddersLegrande r u a game programmer?

@saadtaame only as a hobbyist. For work I'm a web developer, primarily using Microsoft SharePoint

that's way too much compared to what we get here :(

4:40 PM
If I didn't have school to pay for I'd agree that its probably more money than I need

The only people that I know of in this channel that are professional game devs are Josh and Tetrad (correct me if I'm wrong)

You are right @Gajet. That's the case almost everywhere else

@JohnMcDonald I'm a freelancer, and sometimes I've been offered with game projects.

You made money in the gamedev field?

in general I accept "anything goes programming", while I have an unwritten rule "never get near data bases"
@JohnMcDonald around $1.5k but that was a long time ago and it was my share from a project which was never finished.

4:42 PM
Databases are awesome, :)

What's a good kit for game programmers. I mean, what should you (as a game programmer) have already programmed?
engines

I agree, but in @Gajet's defense I wouldn't want to be the guy that has to solve the DB problems. I've worked with some really bad data. It's not fun.

algorithms

@Gajet How did you make money from an incomplete project?

@JohnMcDonald well I started the project, and I've implemented some of the features written for that game,

4:44 PM
@saadtaame if you are really looking into breaking into the industry your number one goal should be to "ship" something, regardless of the technology.

later we had an argument with the artist team, and they abandoned the project. so our team only got a 3rd of whole development budget.

Build that portfolio. Complete projects > Incomplete projects

we were going to develop whole game for $10k! and I guess we were doing it good enough.

@Gajet *weren't?

we were doing good enough, but other teams were not

4:47 PM
@Gajet What was your task?

That being said, C++ is probably the still most dominant language for games (outside of mobile) so find something you like working with using that. Otherwise if you just want to make a game for fun, look into UDK or Unity and just make something

I've accepted 3 game projects so far, and all of them failed because artists failed.

Or if you really want to program everything, XNA is a fantastic place to start

@saadtaame I usually do things that are performance critical, but besides that I'll do whatever the team needs. or debug whatever other people in the team fails to fix.

5:35 PM
:D Guess what I found while cleaning up!
