12:45 AM
Ah TI in highschool, those were the days.

11 hours later…
11:24 AM
So, @Mana, and @badp since you came in anyway!

(pay no attention to the mod behind the ninja mask)

Hum, the old room was deleted. Which isn't exactly an obstacle for you two, but meh all the same.

was it? bah

I need someone to help coordinate the Gaming side of things with Game Dev's "Two Weekends, One Week" game jam, where Gaming gets to be the judge.

Wow! So you mean, we play Game Dev's games and judge them?

11:26 AM
Aye to that

That sounds neat. But coordinating gamers is difficult.

This was an idea that was come up with by various members here, spearheaded by @AttackingHobo. Your current job is to do what I did back in July - keep an eye on things to know what the status of progress is. We've got some of the basics ready but we aren't starting yet.

eh, we don't have to be online together at the same time to do that I gather?

@badp To do the judging? I reckon not.
I'm figuring, they get 10 days to make game, you guys get a fair amount of time to judge, but the details are still being kinked out. Hence what I figure is a good first step is to connect with AttackingHobo and just get up to speed.
I'm still going to be a part, but this time I'll be acting as Community Coordinator (and thus, in a general communication and organizational position, not just as Gaming Liaison)

I see.

11:29 AM
Now, I have to... "dispose of some trash", so I'll be right back. ♪

But...garbage day's on Monday, I thought?

@Mana Actually, here it's Tuesday (it was Wednesday back in Westfield, too)

Oh, neat.

11:51 AM
Aaand, back.
So, right, I don't expect that the Gaming side will need to do anything but I figure that people should be in the know in advance rather than springing the thing on everyone as a surprise.

Thanks for that.
Now I have an excuse to endeavor in developing great fwendships with all the Game Devs.

you needed one?

Everyone needs excuses. dramatic face

12:22 PM
I prefer to just do stuff because I can ...
... which occasionally gets me people yelling stuff like "DON'T CALL THE ARTILLERY ON OUR CO'S POSITION!!!" at me in TS, but whatever. :)
Hmm. This gets me an idea - about a game inspired by "Things Mr. Welch Is No Longer Allowed to Do" ...

Sounds intriguing.

1:08 PM
Morning :-)

1:29 PM
@ManjotSingh Hi.

Hi How are you?

1:43 PM
Alive. :D But no time for small talk, sorry. How's your game coding going along?

1 hour later…
3:01 PM
@MartinSojka You've got to go to the origins: skippyslist.com/list

3:15 PM
@TreDubZedd Yeah, but the Welch one is applicable to more game types.

@MartinSojka Don't you realize? Everything is becoming Call of Warfare. In the next generation of consoles, Skippy's List will be the only applicable list.

Let me guess, you read the Syndicate news and had to make a double facepalm as well?

If I have any sources, it's online comics...who probably read the Syndicate.

Ah--I've heard references to that, but I've had no idea what it actually is
Ahh...X-Com. If I had known that, I would've paid attention.
This...this is blasphemy.
Hm...evidently I need to pay better attention when paying attention. Syndicate was like X-Com, visually...and that is what's changing. Got it.

3:26 PM
...

Next stop: Dungeon Keeper, as an FPS. or Populous, the FPS: somethingawful.com/d/news/populous-syndicate-xcom.php

Actually, it's "X-Com was a tactical game in isomeric view and is now getting a crappy generic FPS treatment. Oh, and same goes for Syndicate now, too, which was much of the same (just real-time instead of turn-based)."

Dang.

Though, me, I'm waiting for the revival of Sim City, where you play a cop in a gritty city, where everyone is a Sim
Sims, of course, being robots that are controlled by an Evil AI, who is out to kill you
It's an FPS

... and fight Gojira and alien invasions ...

3:30 PM
If you play the Wii port, you get to fight bowser!

"In other news, the Diablo 3 beta has not been testing well, so the entire engine is being re-built. We realize that this will push the release date back, but we see it as a vital improvement for our fans....
"One of the changes will include a more up-close-and-personal viewpoint, putting the player closer to the action--directly behind the avatar's shoulder. Also, the traditional point-and-click interface will be improved to handle a third dimension, also increasing the reality and 'grittiness' of the game. We feel this is what our players are expecting from us, and we are in a position to provide it."

"Since managing health potions is boring and only serves to waste players valuable time, health will regen automatically by taking cover, and after major fights."

heh, I guess they said that "the entire engine is being re-built" to appeal to people that don't know what an engine is eh?

haha
Marketing...of course they'll get the details confused.

Can you imagine if they were actually rebuilding the entire engine from scratch?
and yeah, marketers

3:37 PM
No...because Blizzard is much smarter than that.

At one point, Microsoft tried to re-write Word from scratch
(according to Joel on Software)

At this point, that might be a worthy exercise.

heh, you might think so eh?

...if only to provide an example of "how to do things wrong."

Here's the article I was referring to: joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000069.html It's a great read
Old, but still applicable

3:44 PM
@Noctrine do you have any thoughts on the tag synonyms I proposed in the meta thread?

The debug/debugging is pretty clear
just seems like a very unclear tag in general, though, I'd put that as a candidate just to be useless.

not sure whether debug or debugging should be the root tag though
personally I'd lead towards debugging
but there are more questions tagged with debug

How do the rest of the general "action" tags look?

most of them are verbs
programming, scripting, learning planning, etc

Yeah, you've got "path-finding", "rendering", "scripting", etc.
I'd go towards then

3:52 PM
done

4:06 PM
I agree, "debugging" is better

When The Day of the Tentacle becomes a FPS, I'll give up all hope.

What if it was made into a curtain fire shooting game?

4:54 PM
Damn you Wikipedia! Monkey Island -> Grog -> Pirates

haha

@Tetrad I agree with what you said, debug should go into debugging. And Mod to Modification. I would have done the synonyms myself but I figured you didn't because you were looking for more consensus.
Monkey Island FPS? Is that what Josh was talking about on twitter?
The CryEngine one is awesome.

5:10 PM
@thedaian Please shoot me now if this is an official LucasArts project.
Although, note, I probably have the Dead Ringer out...

I wonder if that Crysis Mod is still in development.

5:38 PM
@Powerlord No, it's not real. It's video from a HL1 map someone made, and video from a completely unrelated crysis thing
it's basically a joke in response to the Synicate and Xcom FPSs being made

@thedaian Oh, well certain sites are blocked where I work, so I can't check stuff on them.
