Q: Mi Yodeya Referencer: A Syntax for Linking to Sources

HodofHodSeveral times, the community has discussed and requested an easier way to link to sources. So recently, with the help of Hashem yisborach, and @Menachem, I threw together a quick script to do just that. It links to Tanach and most of Talmud Bavli, and with the help of the community, we've added ...

Hi, and thanks. Well for instance I wanted to link to the shulchan aruch. What should i have done?

Okay, you're going to need to install a little bit of software first.
What browser are you running?
(Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer ....)

Chrome

Okay.
You'll need to install Tampermonkey
Let me know when you're done -- it should take about 5 seconds to install, once you've told Chrome what to do.

Hold on. Most of the time im using my phone. Android. Does that matter?

12:23 AM
You could install this for your phone also. What browser do you use on your phone?

These days chrome as well.

So you should install Tampermonkey on your phone also
Here:
Ready?

Nope. My cheapo phone is running out of storage. Oh bother. K im gonna work on that and get back to you. Thanks again.

Okay. If/when you're ready, just come back here and ping me @Shokhet, just like on a comment.
Unless you want to work on the computer now? (I always think about the computer, because I only ever use Mi Yodeya on the computer)

12:42 AM
^^^^ like this: @user6591 (and I'm assuming you were notified ;)

@Shokhet hi

Hi! The ping worked, didn't it? :P
If you don't clear it for 15 minutes, it shows up in your notification bar (where comments ping you), so you can let me know when you're ready even if I'm not in the room, currently.
Hi @Daniel !

@Shokhet hi :)

Not the first time i pinged you. It disappeared actually, and i didn't see yours, i came looking for it

@Daniel Working on teaching someone how to use Hod's script -- shouldn't take too long ;-)
@user6591 Really? That's odd.

12:49 AM
Yeah. Ok. But im here now.

Ok.

Teach me rebbe:)

Alright. You installed Tampermonkey?

Yup

@HodofHod Oh that tampering monkey, he is good.
Alright.
Now go here, and click on "Mi Yodeya Referencer," and click "Install"
Once that's done, you've installed all the software you need. Learning how to use it is very easy.

12:55 AM
I clicked on it and got a page full of script, not an install option.

In the middle of that page, towards the left side of the screen, there should be a few buttons. One of them says "Install"
(where the red arrow is)

Nope. Not getting anything like that.

Can you upload a screenshot?

Oh come on. I'm on training wheels here.

Can you describe what you see?

1:04 AM
There are a couple of instructions. For chrome lets say, it says left click above on mi yodea refferencer . But i dont have a left click on my phone.

So just regular touch it/click it, whatever.
(screenshot I showed you was the next step)

That's what i did. Then i got the page full of script

What did that look like?

==UserScript==
// @name Mi Yodeya Referencer
// @description Links Tanach, Talmud, and Mishna Torah references to online resources.
// @match http://stackoverflow.com/*
// @match http://meta.stackoverflow.com/*

And etc etc:)

@user6591 Right on top of that should be the buttons I told you about.
I think

1:10 AM
Nope. This is the top.

Let's take this back one step.

Ok

Tampermonkey is installed, right?

Yes. Just double checked.

Ok
Try long-pressing on that link, see what happens.
(The link that says "referencer" on it)

1:19 AM
Do i need to sign up with github for this to week?
To work?

I long clicked. Got the same page of script

Hm....scroll down -- is there a button that says "Install" anywhere?

Nadda. I even switched to desktop view just in case, but to no avail.

Hm. I'll have to try doing this on my own Android (haven't gotten around to it yet, don't often use MY except on computer) and see if I can figure it out.
Can you send me a screenshot? ....grab the top of the screen and pull down -- there should be a screenshot button (looks like a rectangle inside corners) in that menu.
(in the versions of Android that I've used)
[mt shabbos 2 l] = Rambam, Hilchot Shabbos 2
@user6591 Done showing off now ;-) .....I'll try to work on my Android tablet tonight, and let you know what I find. If you try the steps I told you to do on computer, then it will work for sure.

1:36 AM
Well i copied a screen shot, how do i get it over here?

There should be a small button next to where you enter text for this chat room, that says "upload"

Ok. Thanks for your time and patience!

^^^^ is where it is on my computer; not sure what it looks like on 'droid

Yeah. Figures I don't have that:)

Yeah, you're on a different platform. So I'll try it tonight; we'll meet back here sometime tomorrow?

1:40 AM
Yup. Thanks again buddy. And one day you'll show me how to shecht:)

:-)
