Q: Movie (seen in 80's) where a guy reminisces about his past with his family

SherlockEinsteinI remember seeing this movie in the 80's with a bit of a melancholic theme. In it a guy comes home (he lives in a detached house) and starts reminiscing about his life (mainly about his wife and child(ren) who had died in some calamity soon before him arriving). If I remember correctly, the movi...

@Randal'Thor If you're about to fix italic character names everywhere, you got quite a job to do. ;-)
@Walt Indeed.
@Himarm It's even harder to argue when "offensive" flags on your comments aren't particularly baseless.

@NapoleonWilson Does that mean these kind of edits aren't really appreciated here?
I probably wouldn't have bothered if there hadn't been some spelling mistakes too.

@Himarm No, you did not.
@Himarm Thanks, we're taking a look into it.
@Randal'Thor Fixed.
@Randal'Thor Oh, they are, just that it's quite a job to do for you, especially since I myself used to write everything in italic until about a year ago.
There's hardly an improving edit that's not appreciated here.
@Randal'Thor Oh, I missed them then.

@NapoleonWilson Sure; my question was more whether that really counts as an improvement or whether it comes under "tiny, trivial edits are discouraged" from the help centre.

@Randal'Thor Well, I'd see it as improvement and an improvement can't really be "tiny, trivial or irrelevant" really. But ok, it's indeed a borderline case, I guess. (And I wouldn't do it myself, even though I often wanted to remove italics when visiting one of my older posts.)

@Randal'Thor I thought they were moving away from the "tiny trivial edits are bad" concept.
they removed that from the edit review queue
it now says "no improvement whatsoever" instead of "only minor or trivial improvement"

12:39 PM
@Walt At least they can easily be deleted. ;-)

@KutuluMike It still says here that:
> Tiny, trivial edits are discouraged - try to make the post significantly better when you edit, correcting all problems that you observe.

ah well
i noticed whatshisname asked like a dozen porn questions and then deleted them all.
did someone yell at him?
there was at least one of them I could answer without being too graphic :)

@KutuluMike Yes, yes someone did, not for a porn question, though.

@KutuluMike He has a long history of self-deleting his questions. I think he does it every time they get downvoted.

ah well.

12:41 PM
Sometimes when they get downvoted after being answered, he starts yelling in comments "please delete my Question!!!"

the one about camera angles is actually pretty well documented. of course, it takes about 10 seconds to find the answer on google. so meh.

@KutuluMike And that one just got "voluntarily removed by its author" too, after I downvoted it.

I'm not sure I'm particularly sorry for porn questions disappearing from the site. Though, deleting on the first sight of downvotes is not the best attitude, even if a negatively scored question is technically not appreciated by the community.

^ This, on all counts.

i think there's a difference between "How are these shot because it seems weird", which I think is borderline but ok, vs "wow did we really see her lady bits?!?" which is off the scale wrong
doing / not-doing nude scenes is a huge part of an actors career choices, I don't see anything wrong with asking about them.
the game of thrones walk of shame nude scene was big news, 1) for political reasons, 2) because the actress refused to do it, and 3) because they used some fancy CGI to fake it.

12:47 PM
@KutuluMike Oh, I had no problem with the Basic Instinct question.

his other questions I downvoted and moved on.
but the camera angles question I would have answered.
though, I also self-delete questions when they get received very negatively very quickly.

@KutuluMike Oh, so that wasn't Miss Headey at all? I didn't know that (which probably means it's not really relevant for my opinion about her if they used CGI or not, given they didn't advertize it as not her body).

not right away, but if it's clear they aren't appreciated why keep them?
no. she had a body double and they CGI'd her head on
if you know that, you can kinda tell. her head moves funny in some shots.

@KutuluMike They might get appreciation later on. A single downvote as the first vote is not necessarily a sign of the entire community hating your post. Users you get agitated about not receiving 5 upvotes in the first 10 minutes do, well, not have a particularly good standing here.

@KutuluMike Another example of off-the-scale wrong.

12:51 PM
yeah I remember that one.

@NapoleonWilson Yes, but he said "very negatively", which a single downvote doesnt really qualify as.

yeah, one downvote doesn't bother me.

Q: What Linux Distro do they use in films?

Ah, now a dupe of a closed question.

its about movies, so not really.
but i doubt there is an answer.

@Randal'Thor Well, duplicate anyway.

i dunno if I agree that it's off-topic.
it's about a movie prop.
> Questions about a Movie or TV show's production.

@KutuluMike You have your reopen votes, though (and your edit privileges to make the question more relevant).

yeah the original question is kinda terrible and also looks like screen caps from a pirated copy.

12:55 PM
Can somebody else approve this edit so that we can improve the post further?
(yes, I know I should have clicked "improve" rather than "approve", but I hadn't seen the comments then)

done.
pro tip: when pasting screenshots of a movie, photoshop out the file name of your pirated copy.

Indeed. And remove any motherfriggin' space-wasting black bars if you're going to upload 5000 huge images.

@NapoleonWilson What's wrong with black bars, you racist? :-P ;-)

@KutuluMike That might just be the name of the genuine BluRay file, though.

genuine blue-ray files probably won't have "WEB-DL" in the name...

1:18 PM
@NapoleonWilson Why are my flags being declined on comments asking for clarification which has since been added to the question?
It seems weird, at least to me, to have a question which says "I saw this movie in 2015 and it was in English" with a comment asking "What year did you see this movie and what language was it in?"

@Randal'Thor Because those comments are also asking for other information that has not necessarily been added. Those are general comments asking for improvement of the question and the flag-handler deemed the question to be still possible to profit from further improvement. Adding a release year doesn't magically shut off all complaints about missing details.
> It would be of help if you could remember the year you saw this movie and what language was the movie in, etc. Any other information
is what the comment actually said.

@NapoleonWilson OK, so you left it because of the "etc. Any other information"?

@Randal'Thor Pretty much, yeah.

Bear in mind that since the OP has already responded to that comment to provide the specific information asked for, they're not going to respond to it again to address the last few words.

I could have deleted it and added my own "moar details please!" comment, but I chose not to. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1:26 PM
A better way to get more info from the OP would be to leave another comment asking for more specific details.
@NapoleonWilson jinx :-)

@Randal'Thor Of course they're not, but other people will see the comment.
Meh, done.

@NapoleonWilson And how will that help? Other people won't be able to respond to it; only the OP knows the details of the particular movie they watched.

Gheez, you're really making me work on those bullshit questions. ;-(
@Randal'Thor They'll at least see that it's not sufficient.

@NapoleonWilson Jinx again! I did the same thing 9 seconds earlier :-)
@NapoleonWilson Surely that's part of what you signed up for when you got your diamond.

@Randal'Thor I guess so, yes.

@NapoleonWilson WUT?!?! OMG!! It's pretty awesome, isn't it? Well, I watched Batman v Superman yesterday afternoon! Er, I wouldn't say that it's awesome. It was like pulling teeth to get me to sit through the thing, but I did it at least ;)
@NapoleonWilson Why are you never here when I am? :'(
@Randal'Thor Hmmm...be nice? That's how I always handle a situation. Disgruntled people are waaaaay easier to deal with if you come at them with a positive attitude rather than being on the defensive...right? I have seen you handle situations simply by being nice and considerate to the other person :)

@Randal'Thor Himarm picked a fight? No! Impossible! I don't believe it! ;)

@KutuluMike OMG! Now, I am really shocked!! ;)
@NapoleonWilson Er, I liked the cool house that you were so excited about! Uhm...yeah.

3:09 PM
@steelershark Yes, of course that's the best answer. But sometimes it's easier said than done, when you've already had to handle a load of crap that day and you're tired of it even if the other person isn't. Just ask Napoleon ;-)

@steelershark Awww, hehe!
Meh.

@Randal'Thor Yeah, I understand. I actually just responded to that comment to give you a compliment, just because I have seen you handle disgruntled people in this way before :)

@steelershark It is indeed. I actually wanted to DVR it. But I couldn't sleep anyway and after about 15 minutes I was hooked.

@steelershark Aww, thanks :-)
Yeah, I'm still proud of myself for successfully appeasing that meta hedgehog that one time.

@NapoleonWilson So...Superman is actually dead? Well, I must say that I dozed off towards the end and woke up to Superman's funeral. Ugh.
@Randal'Thor <pats on back>

3:12 PM
@steelershark Did you also like that Batman guy, and his alter-ego and the buttler of his alter-ego?
@steelershark Probably not anyway...but...uh...Dude, spoilers! ;-)
It was hinted that he had survived. In fact the whole scene was (yet another) rendition of The Dark Knight Returns, just with switched roles.

> The Spoiling Room

@NapoleonWilson Da...wut? Alter ego? Huh?

@steelershark Uh, Bruce Wayne is Batman's alter ego, just in case you didn't notice.
@steelershark Did you actually watch the Ultimate Edition, by the way? (I assume your nephew accompanied you?)

@NapoleonWilson Oh, sorry. I thought that you meant that he had some other alter ego or something. Yeah, I actually liked Affleck in it. I love Jeremy Irons, so that was awesome.

@NapoleonWilson "buttler" - typo or slightly rude joke?

3:19 PM
@Randal'Thor The former (or rather simply lack of knowledge).

@NapoleonWilson No. My brother had it on pay per view. You get it for 24 hours, so I watched it while I could...just for you! :)
No. My nephew was too busy pokemon hunting ;)

@steelershark Wut? For me? Wow, you wouldn't have to do that, it's not like I'm up in arms about that film. There's way more important stuff for you to watch. ;-) But thanks, hehe! ;-)

@NapoleonWilson I thought so. Which is why I mentioned it, so that you'll know for the future and won't risk scandalising people by mentioning butts ;-)

@steelershark Urgh.
Kids these days, running around outside instead of watching a cool film. <head-shaking emoticon>
@Randal'Thor Indeed, and thank you for that. I pondered about it before writing it anyway, but a single "t" didn't seem to have sufficient "power" for that very short-spoken "u" beforehand.

@NapoleonWilson Well, you kept going on about that house and how cool Affleck was. I figured that I should watch it then, because I probably won't get another chance to. Also, my nephew said to watch it before I see suicide squad due to characters being introduced or something. I don't know.

3:24 PM
I think there's only 1 character in both movies and I'm pretty sure you would know who he was.

Indeed.

Yeah, I don't know. I thought it might be the electricity guy. Hell, I don't know. I am clueless about all of these superheroes ;)

as far as I know, everyone in Suicide Squad is new except Batman

@steelershark Uh, what electricity guy?

Flash, I assume

3:26 PM
@KutuluMike If he even does much more than show his cape for a second.
@KutuluMike Oh, I see.

@NapoleonWilson I thought one of the trailers showed a scene of Batman rescuing Harley

@KutuluMike All I know of is him clinging to the roof of a driving car. But maybe I haven't seen the latest trailers.

The guy at the end, who knows Wonder Woman or something...there were 3 other characters that were "like" wonder woman...correct?

there were 3 superhero cameos.

@steelershark Oh, yeah, indeed.

3:28 PM
flash, aquaman, and cyborg

Oh, and Wonder Woman is smokin' hot, btw.

Those YouTube videos of the other guys were one of the most stupidest parts of the film, though.

true.

@steelershark Of course she is, she already was totes hawt on Fast & Furious.

I get the idea of having Bruce find that information, that's ok.
but the videos were dumb.

3:29 PM
@KutuluMike Who was the one that sent electric power surges through that ship thing at the end?

and that Flash extended cameo really better pay off.

It was just strechted way too much and you wondered when she's finally through with those videos, they felt like 10 minutes each.

@steelershark I don't remember that.

@KutuluMike I haven't seen the Ultimate Edition yet.

did you watch the "ultimate" cut by chance?

3:30 PM
@steelershark Huh?

Actually, that's just when I was waking up from my nap...it could have been imagined ;)

@steelershark <sigh>

I just watched it on pay per view.

@NapoleonWilson I'm sorry! I was so uninterested in that thing. I just couldn't stay awake any longer. It was too frigging long. I only dozed off for 10-15 minutes ;)

user116211
@steelershark :D

@MAFIA36790 Did you see the sequel? Not as good, but still alright.

@steelershark Indeed. Though, I'm not sure I liked him that much. But on the other hand, it's not entirely his fault as well, that's just how he was. I totally loved the quote at the end that summed his relationships up pretty well:
> He was a rock they broke themselves against.

user116211
@steelershark Many times; yes not good; but I definitely liked it; it was really required to tip the balance towards the Greece side.

3:38 PM
@NapoleonWilson That's exactly why my nephew was named that. Because of that quote! Ha! Too funny that you liked that! OMG.

user116211
The third instalment of 300 is in rumour; probably in 2018.

@MAFIA36790 I was just glad that Themistokles got props in the sequel. He played an integral role in that battle. I mean, Leonidis is a bad ass, but they all pretty much were ;)
Now I forgot what question about suicide squad I was supposed to ask my nephew to annoy him. Something about crocodiles...Argh! ;)

in Mos Eisley, 23 hours ago, by Ixrec
"Why doesn't Killer Croc just summon an army of crocodiles to kill them?"

OMG!! YES!! That's it!
It baffles me how you people come up with this stuff ;)

Well, just search the chatroom for "croc", nothing else.

3:49 PM
Can I also say that Holly Hunter looked frigging awesome in that movie?
So, does The Joker kill Batman's parents in the actual comics? Are we just assuming that every time they show Bruce Wayne's parents being shot, it's always the Joker? I get so confused by this stuff.
@NapoleonWilson Haha! My nephew simply said "Are you serious right now?" He shook his head, let out a sigh, said "OMG" and went back upstairs ;)

@steelershark No, not at all, that's what the 1989 film made up. No other film or comic actually did that.
@steelershark Weren't you supposed to ask that during the movie? It seems a strange question to just ask out of the cold right now.

@NapoleonWilson Seriously? Argh! God dammit! I thought this whole time that Jack Napier was the murderer because of the 1989 film.

@steelershark It's just a normal street thug, later named Joe Chill in the comics, like in Batman Begins, too.

@NapoleonWilson Er, if that seems strange to you...then you're in for a lot of surprises ;)

I think part of the point is that it is an unknown criminal without a huge motive. The '89 film just wanted to give Bruce that character moment of finally avenging his parents, something he actually never could in the comics, and something that Batman Begins explicitly took away from him in some way, too.
At the end of the day, who specifically killed his parents doesn't matter, it was crime itself that took them. Or something along those lines, I guess.

4:05 PM
I just acted all cool like I knew who killer croc was. I see nothing strange about asking that question out of the blue...I launched a preemptive speech on how I watched Barman v Superman. "So, speaking of these characters, does killer croc summon an army of crocodiles to help him?" That's when I got the "Are you serious right now?" So, my question still wasn't answered ;)

It might even be an interesting question in which way the anonymity (or "unspectacularness") of his parents' murder and murderer add to his motivation and characterization. But that would proabably be more a Comics.SE question anyway.

@NapoleonWilson Sure. Also, how many frigging times do we have to see his parents being murdered? Ugh.

@steelershark Well, it's part of what makes him him, I guess.

We get it. His parents were murdered. He is f-ed up for life because of it. They just have to show it so many times, it seems.

23
Q: Who killed Bruce Wayne's parents?

OghmaOsirisIn the 1989 movie Batman, it was shown that the man who would become the Joker killed Bruce's parents. Is this what happened in the official canon? Did Batman ever get revenge on the person who killed his parents?

4:14 PM
I see. So, is the Joker's true identity that of Jack Napier or is that just bs as well?

@steelershark Well, the Joker doesn't really have much of a true identity. But granted, I think is some version he even is called Jack Napier, but I'm not sure about it, I'm no expert on comics either.
But part of the Joker's point is that he doesn't really have a secured backstory at all.
56
Q: What is the real reason for the Joker's scars?

Vijin PaulrajIn The Dark Knight, The Joker told different reasons for the scars on his cheeks. Initially he said that his father gave him the cuts on his cheek as a child after his father performed the same act on his mother, which includes the famous line "Why so serious?". The Joker also tells Rachel Dawes...

This is exactly why I can't get into these superhero movies. It's just too damn complicated ;)

user116211
@NapoleonWilson Well, in Gotham, it was Hugo Strange.

See? ^
Yet another name! Ugh!

user116211
He contracted Matches Malone for that.

@steelershark It's not that complicated, though. But ok, comics are famous for having like 5 million different versions for every story and a totally jumbled canonicity, which I guess is what happens when you try to tell the same story for 70 years. But Batman is one of the more solid heroes that doesn't change too much (at least compared to other stuff, I guess).
I mean, even the Flash TV-show has about 7 different universes with 57 different versions for each character at this point, and they're in the 2nd friggin' season.

BTW, I recognise Fish Mooney now ;)

user116211
Saw the episode where she was resurrected by Strange. She had her memory intact unlike Azrael.

@steelershark You should ask if that's the same guy as Doctor Strange. ;-)

user116211
@NapoleonWilson ;D

@NapoleonWilson Okay, but look at The Dark Knight and the Joker's backstory in that. He said thathe had a wife and he talks about his parents and stuff. And then there's the comic that suggests 3 separate jokers. I don't know. It's just overwhelming.
@NapoleonWilson Yeah. I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about right now ;)

user116211
4:23 PM
The guy concerned here is this:

@steelershark Um, the Joker told about 3 different versions of his backstory in The Dark Knight alone. But that's the point, he talks bullshit! Which is what the answers to that linked question say, too.

user116211

@steelershark There's a film called Doctor Strange comimg out soon, but it's about a different superhero from Marvel, played by Cumberbatch! I just tried to confuse you more. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson OMG! Argh! You and my nephew just love f-ing with me don't you? ;)

@steelershark Well, I honestly thought you had at least heard about the Doctor Strange movie. Even as a non-comics person it has friggin' Cumberbatch, and the trailer kicks ass!

user116211
4:28 PM
Dr. Strange would be epic, I betcha for this year.

@NapoleonWilson Er, no. I have not heard of it. I think Cumberbatch is awesome, but I don't even know what Dr. Strange even is.

user116211
@steelershark O.o

And Rachel McAdams, for god's sake!

Yes, I know. I completely suck <hangs head in shame>

4:29 PM
The trailer looks like Marvel going Inception with the mothereffin' Sherlock! That's gotta be boss!

Meh.

@steelershark :'(

user116211
@steelershark hmm.

I am completely fine with just Sherlock without Inception.
runs
<hangs head in shame again>

user116211
@steelershark condolences

4:34 PM
I'm sorry. I don't go crazy over superhero movies. I never have. I watch them, just because everyone else does, but I have never been wrapped up in them :(

@steelershark Then just don't see it as a superhero movie, problem solved.
You just have to ignore that's based on some comic superhero if that's what bothers you.
I don't give zero crap about no comics either, I just like me cool films.
But to each his own, of course.

@NapoleonWilson It doesn't bother me. They don't bother me. They are just so long and boring for me. Batman vs Superman was utter torture for me to sit through. I was watching it and following what was happening, I am just not interested in it at all. I simply just don't care about the characters or the story. I just start yawning if I can't move around ;)

@steelershark Awww, well don't worry. There's still enough other films we can watch. ;-)

I have no desire to see Batman and Superman fight, especially over something so stupid, imo. I don't know. I was over it long before they fought, anyways ;)
@NapoleonWilson Of course!! I mean, you do have good taste in movies some of the time ;)

@steelershark Well, sure. But there's other cool Batman films. If you don't care about the specific story that's fine, though.

4:46 PM
@NapoleonWilson I don't know. Maybe I am just over it, already. Maybe I am just tired of watching the same frigging story over and over again. I'm not just talking about Batman. I'm talking about Spider-Man, Superman, Batman...just all of them. No worries. It's all good :)

user116211
yeh, like Batman and Robin ;P

@steelershark Yeah, it's undeniable there's quite an abundance of that stuff lately. It might get a little tiring. But fortunately the individual films are still fun to me.

Batman and Robin was frigging awesome! I mean, I love it when Clooney whips out his Bat credit card...Don't leave the cave without it. jfc.
That comment is pure sarcasm...just fyi!

@steelershark Good.

user116211
@steelershark hmm, for me, it was dull T__T

user116211
4:49 PM
@steelershark ohh!!

That movie was so ridiculous that it was laughable ;)

Indeed.
Batman Forever was already hinting at that, but it didn't exhibit that degree of ridiculous bullshit and it had some interesting psychological approaches.

Everything about it. From Poison ivy to that lame ass Bane character to Mr. Freeze. Batgirl was just ridiculous. Robin was a whiny little girl. It was just...ugh.

> What killed the dinosaurs?...The ice age!

God. That's so f-ing ridiculous. OMG!

Q: What's the name of a Chilean film about a mining operation in which a worker has his tongue cut out?

zadroznyMy guess is it was made in the 80s. I think the company in question was foreign-owned.

Well, Batman Forever was at least somewhat interesting without the bs. Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones actually provided interesting characters. Uma Thurman and Alicia Silverstone sucked big time.

@MovieReel Yeah...no!
@steelershark Indeed. And it had Nicole Kidman!
Though, Carrey and Jones were largely annoying.

@NapoleonWilson Sure. I didn't know that you were a huge Nicole Kidman fan...

@steelershark Well, she's cool...and hot. ;-)

Yeah, but not as annoying as Mr. Freeze and Poison ivy, imo.
@NapoleonWilson Sure. Alright :)

4:59 PM
@steelershark Granted.
@steelershark She was quite a big thing in the 90s (and still is to some degree). You don't like her?

@NapoleonWilson Yeah, I like her fine. I really liked Dead Calm before she married Tom Cruise hit it big ;)

@steelershark Indeed, nice film. Sam Neill is boss!

@NapoleonWilson I love Sam Neill! He was in The Tudors after all! And, of course Billy Zane was in that movie ;)

I also liked the Merlin film with him.

I love it when Sam Neill washes her hair in that movie. That's frigging awesome.

5:07 PM
And of course Jurassic Park. And I don't give a crap about what the internet says, Jurassic Park 3 was great, too, to a large degree because of Sam Neill.
@steelershark I don't remember that right now.

@NapoleonWilson I loved Jurassic Park 3! Sam Neill, William H. Macy, Tea Leoni. I thought that it was awesome!
It was better than Jurassic Park 2. Julianne Moore was annoying in that movie as was Jeff Goldblum's kid.

Damn, I wanted to watch that William H. Macy film, what was it called The Cooler. But well, I guess there's not need to anymore in a few days. ;-)
@steelershark Oh, I liked that too. But I might agree that 3 was better.
Afterall I liked all of them. The new one was nice, too, even if it copied the first one quite a bit, but which one doesn't. I'm not going down to The Force Awakens bullshit complaint level. Shall it copy the old one as much as it wants as long as it's a nice film.

@NapoleonWilson Well, it is about Las Vegas! So, you will be seeing Vegas in a few days. Wait...maybe you're talking about something completely different. Er, nevermind. Haha! ;)

@steelershark ...

Uhuh. That's what I thought ;)
Actually, I think that I have The Cooler on DVD. Maybe I will bring it with me. You can see for yourself what an awesome movie it is ;)
Has anyone seen The Green Inferno? OMG. Worst movie that I have seen in a long time. It's beyond horrible. Ugh.
@NapoleonWilson I have to go and get ready. I will talk to you if you are available tomorrow, okay? Have a good day. Don't stay up too late ;-*

5:33 PM
@steelershark Sure, have fun! ;-*

5:55 PM
Nothing like returning from a week long vacation to Maine and Boston to watch all the new goodies that have come out of SDCC.

There was an SDCC?

@NapoleonWilson I'm not sure if that's dry German wit or you actually didn't know SDCC went down this past week and ends today. :p

@MattD I genuinely didn't know, because (1) it's about 10,000 km away and (2) I'm not that well-rooted in the popular internet hype culture. I do know there seemed to be some new trailers and now I know why, I guess.

Q: What is the name of this psychological thriller movie?

fornitThe movie involves a darkroom (you know, the ones where photographs are developed). The protagonist is an old man with mental issues who befriends a small child (and his parents) in a shop. He then somehow ends up kidnapping the parents (definitely the mother, I am not sure about the father tho...
