Q: What would be the opposite of a MacGuffin?

Chris NoeA MacGuffin is a plot device that motivates the story's characters, but whose specific nature is unimportant to the overall plot. But is there a term for a plot device that is a primary motivator for the audience, but that the characters are not invested it, or are even oblivious to? For exampl...

@Catija @Walt I recently asked a question regarding an actor who changed his "credited" name from when he was a child. In your opinion(s), was that appropriate to ask on SE movies &tv or should it have been asked on another SE site?

Q: Movie is a western about a bunch of mentally handicapped people lead by a con man?

BreadSo yeah basically the main character tries to exploit a bunch of mentally handicapped people in this western by first getting one guy to count cards and the film climax's with a western shoot out in a ghost town against bandits.

@steelerfan It's sort of borderline since questions should be about films but you did frame it in relation to a film... so... it's mostly fine. Someone could argue that it's not appropriate but it's about his professional life, not his private life, so I think it's OK in the long run... that's my chain of thought.... and my final answer is "it's fine".

Q: Help me find this movie

Maddie ParsonI remember when I was younger I found this movie at blockbuster (yeah a while ago) that was about a bunch of forest animals who for some reason had to go out on a journey to find an object or something like that. I remember they all had clothes on and lived in little houses in a community. And I ...

Wes Craven has died. :(

@MattD I just saw that, too...
I was looking at "The Try Guys" on BuzzFeed... they were trying "revealing men's swimwear"... and there was a news notice on it.

Ewwww, Buzzfeed.
Stupid Time Warner making their streaming service not work if you're not in your own home. IF I WERE HOME I'D WATCH ON MY TV YOU DUM DUMS.

but now you can watch tv in the bathroom

3:10 AM
Buddy lent me his DirecTV account creds, but their streaming service blows. Fortunately they let you login directly to Adult Swim's website. Sucks I'm missing John Oliver, though.

@MattD We have a friend's HBO and Showtime logins... It's magic.

Yeah, sadly their streaming service doesn't do live feed, though.
Staying at my parent's place most of the week and they don't have cable. I can survive without Last Week Tonight, but I needs my Rick & Morty.
Just cheeses me that I'm paying for cable, but can't use the streaming service when I"m not at home.

@MattD I think Last Week Tonight is off for two weeks, anyway...

@Catija Ah, well, TWC still blows. :P

Yeah, they're off until the 13th.
I've still not decided whether I like Rick and Morty yet... I'm not liking it much... really. but.. meh.

3:27 AM
One of the best new cartoons on TV, and headed for one of the best of all time. I absolutely love it.

@MattD But the art is horrid and the characters are obnoxious. Even if it's funny, it's hard to watch.

@Catija The art can take a little getting used to I guess, but I wouldn't call it horrid.
Which episode(s) have you seen?

@MattD The first... five? Maybe six? Just watched the episode with the Needful Things reference.
... So I guess that's the first 9 episodes...

Oh man, the episode where the shop owner is the devil selling cursed items? That's probably my favorite episode from season one.

Q: Ends with a woman on a horse being told her eyelash was found at the crime scene?

AmberI don't remember much about this movie, but it is just a memory I have from years and years ago. I think about it from time to time and it drives me crazy I can't figure it out. All I remember is there is a sex scene in the movie where the woman is on top and slowly rocking on the man. They're ...

3:33 AM
The current season has been hit after hit as far as I'm concerned. Such cleverness in the stories and sci-fi aspect, plus I'm a sucker for dark humor.

It's ... really crass, though. I'm not a prude but the belching, farting, having green goo on his chin... it's a bit much sometimes.

3:47 AM
Meh, guess crass doesn't bother me that much. I want good stories with dark, twisted humor sometimes and this show gives it to me in spades. This season alone has been pretty messed up, hell the episode I'm watching right now is, whooooo.

Q: Identify 70/80's softcore/erotic movie about orphaned young woman in expat community

your uncle BobI'm trying to date a childhood memory that involves a 70's or 80's softcore / erotic / porn movie. I've tried googling and searching on IMDb, but my memory of it is too vague for that to work. @Catija thanks for your response to my question. I fell asleep and woke up to find a world without Wes Craven....so upset!! :(

1:38 PM
@TomCody is it a yes or no for TOW idea?

@AnkitSharma I don't know. One user already seems to like it. I wouldn't personally have guessed that Wes Craven is that universally missed, but there seem to be quite a few voices in chat already that deem him significant enough. So since that proposal is already voted positively and we don't have any other challenges in the near future, why not? I'm just not sure when, any ideas?
Maybe Sep 1st till Sep 10th?

@TomCody its better to start by today
And in absence of any other contender make it 15 day

@AnkitSharma Well, Sep 1st technically is today (or tonight).
@AnkitSharma Seems a bit long, though.
Or maybe till 11th? That'd be sunday night.

@TomCody ooops
lol
@TomCody that will work

Wait, I think my calendar was off, I'm talking rubbish.
The 10th would be thursday, sunday would be 13th. But two weeks sounds a bit long. Will it really garner that much attention?
I'd maybe opt for 11th, which would be (next week's) friday night and 11 days.

@JimmyHoffa Perhaps he doesn't realize that that was Sylar's ability?
@TomCody I'm ambivalent. Too bad it isn't closer to Halloween.

2:50 PM
@Catija Ambivalent on what? If to do it or not at all?

@TomCody I respect his contribution to the film world but I don't know that I've ever seen any of his films. I'm not a fan of horror.

@Catija Me also not so much, but he's undeniably quite a big name in the genre. (And personally I liked the Scream series very much, even if not every other teen slasher it inspired was that great.)
@Catija Well, we could do a general horror challenge on Halloween still (given somebody proposes it as an idea).

Looks like you won't get a primary phase in the ELL elections. ;-(

@TomCody Yeah... Oh well... I'm not even sure what the primary's like. It's going to be such a crazy election. Of the 9 candidates, I'd vote for 5 of them. Ugh.

3:01 PM
@Catija Well, the primary is just a fun and interesting intermediate stage in the form of a classic SE-style up-/downvote fest of all the candidates, throwing out everyone but the 10 top-voted candidates.

@TomCody I guess the primary would give a good preview of the final...

Well, two of the people I voted for in our election didn't win either (and no, the third one wasn't me ;-)).
@Catija Indeed.

@TomCody Me neither. Just kidding. I think I voted for two of the three winners... but I didn't know people as well then. I feel like a few of the people who ran disappeared after the elections.

I just chose to give some lesser-voted but IMHO still very good candidates a chance in contrast to voting for the three favourites that honestly became pretty apparent after the primaries already.
@Catija Well, I think there generally are many avid users whose activity has quite a bit ceased unfortunately.

That seems nice. We have one person who's obviously going to win... I might not vote for him simply because the vote would be unnecessary.
Oh, wow... they list the order of everyone? That means I'll get to see exactly how poorly I do.

3:12 PM
Which is not to say there isn't also some great new blood to take their places (counting present users ;-)). It's probably just natural membership fluctuations.

@TomCody Sure. :) But if our site traffic doesn't increase, we'll be stuck with you three lads forever. :P

@Catija I don't think so, they are ordered at random I thought.

Nope. They order them in vote order.

@Catija Well, it was just an intuitive move, since I don't really know shit about how that STV thing works in practice at all. So I don't really know if my strategy was of any practical use at all.
@Catija Oh, you mean in the results? Sure, that makes sense. I was talking about the ongoing election.

@TomCody Essentially, if you need 100 votes to win and 100 votes are cast for you, only 1% of each of those votes is awarded to you... leaving 99% for the other two candidates. If your second choice candidate has very low votes, you may give the remaining 99% to that person and nothing to the third... I think.
@TomCody Yeah... so in a little over a week, I'll know whether I was 4th or 9th. :P

@AnkitSharma I like the large majority of those questions, even if some of them are quite short.

7:07 PM
The Lady In Black 2 was actually better than The Lady In Black 1 (not hard to do), had some pacing issues and was relatively predictable. The jump scares were annoying but the art and story were still fun I thought. The acting was actually decent as well, with only one stinker (that pilot's performance hit all the wrong notes). I'd suggest it to anyone who loves horror with the caveat that it's still not particularly good, just simple and fun. Others should still stay away.
One thing about horror films is there's a strike zone between about 30% and 70% of the movie where they have to show the monster. Whatever the spook is, no matter how much or little, if they wait until after 70% they've drug on too much and now they have to compress the scares in the end, and frankly I don't care anymore. Before 30% and you're going to really work to keep it scary to the end. Lady In Black 2 hit the mark there, but lots of horror movies fail that simple test.

Uhuh.

7:31 PM
then again lots of people perhaps like movies where the creep is never actually put on display... I just get bored though, they gotta feed my imagination.

@steelerfan Hmm, the Science Fiction & Fantasy people are quite big on comics (or bigger than we are). They might help with that. There's their general chatroom as well as one for comic movies specifically.
That being said, in all chatrooms there might be people who know that stuff, but that site's rooms are probably the biggest chance to find someone.

10:08 PM
@TomCody are you around? I have a question I thought you might be able to address.

@Catija I'm all ears.
(Just when I was about to start watching Nightmare on Elm Street.)

@TomCody As a moderator, is there any sort of precedent for how to deal with a user who intentionally creates an account with an identical name to an established user?
Clearly, if it weren't allowed, SE wouldn't make it possible to have more than one user with the same UN... but I feel there's a line that should be drawn at an obvious attempt at mimicry.

@Catija Hmm, I don't really know. It might depend on the circumstances. There are coincidents and there are trolls. If there is a definite history between the user and the moderator, it's at least quite questionable.

@TomCody I don't know about history... but it's sort of difficult to "accidentally" duplicate "inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M" .

But I admittedly don't really know the practical intricies of it.
@Catija Hmm, indeed.
Especially interesting during moderator elections.

10:14 PM
@TomCody Yes... but I honestly think it's a coincidence. There was a user who got in a bit of a tiff yesterday with him, and I think he's continuing to act out... I don't think there's any direct connection to the election.

By the way, you should actually already be answering questions right now!
@Catija Well, the least you or he can do is alerting the existing moderators to the case and leave it up to their judgement.

@TomCody I just got home from class. I have to get to it...
@TomCody That has certainly been done. Honestly not sure if there's much a mod could do other than putting the user on a time out... and if it is a troll, they'd likely simply make a new account and come back for another round.

@Catija Which, in case of a suspension would be a rule violation, too. The SE staff also have better tools to deal with such extreme cases.
Creating an account to circumvent a suspension is invalid.

@TomCody Sure. Right now it's mostly a minor annoyance... Hopefully he'll just get tired of it and move on.

Well, they could talk to him in a private moderator message and try to call him to reason and calm him down. But I also don't want to prescribe what they should do, as lacking in context as I am.

10:20 PM
Ugh... @TomCody did you see this:

A: What is holding back the new navigation from rolling out to graduated sites?

SklivvzWe care a lot about the feedback we get. Sometimes it needs ...interpretation, but it's useful nonetheless. We're being a bit slow because holidays, but here's what we are working on: A simpler UI for newbies which "grows with your experience" The ability to save your searches User on-boarding...

@TomCody Yeah, don't worry about it. We sort of have two active mods right now, since one is back to run for the election again... so hopefully it will be handled soon.

@Catija Hmm, point 1 sounds like a possible solution to the frontpage dilemma (even if the best solution is admittedly also the easiest, which noone in SE seems to realize). But point 2 sounds great, too. Just recently thought it would be cool to save and organize some often needed searches.

@TomCody ... point one's what I'm groaning about... it sounds stupidly complicated... which is something you pointed out long ago... somewhere.

I mean, what's so damn difficult in presenting a simple unique site on front-page click and resort to all the other views when selecting tabs.

@AnkitSharma sup?

@TomCody No clue. Clearly the SE model is "let's make everything complicated".

10:24 PM
Another disadvantage I didn't realize before is that when you are on the front-page, the URL is total crap, messed full with stupid search queries. No way to just easily get the basic site URL.

@TomCody I think that was one of my points in my question, actually... the logo should go to meta.stackexchange.com - which shows the recently active posts... And that's it...

oh I see I missed lots of drama
who did you "scold like a child"?

Noone, that's the point.

ok, who were you blunt to and why weren't they expecting it?

Noone, that's the point. And I don't know.

10:30 PM
curiouser and curiouser
and migration drama?

@kalina That was different.

different as in?

@kalina All the context is actually in his meta question on Meta Stack Exchange, his question on Movies & TV Meta and the chat discussions linked therefrom. There wasn't really much more to it at all (apart from an unrelated earlier incident where he made a slightly sexist remark in chat that got deleted and explained to him (after which he even apologized for it)).
@kalina Another incident altogether.

@TomCody that involves searching and/or effort, though
@TomCody oh I gathered that

@kalina Well, from your chat message it looked like you already had seen his question. I'm not really intent on gossiping about it so much more now.

10:38 PM
shrug I was just going through the star list

But yeah, an "interesting" week it was.
@kalina Oh.
@kalina And you forgot the tagging drama (which should have been especially interesting to you), which was yet another completely different incident on the same two days. ;-(

oh well I know that any effort spent tagging or discussing tagging is completely wasted here
not even worth going there

@kalina Apparently.

did you succeed?

ooo are we talking about again? I brought popcorn.

10:41 PM
@kalina I don't really know who did. I guess noone actually.

a tag conversation ended in stalemate?

@MikeEdenfield No, we're not. We're watching Nightmare on Elm Street, not Nightmare on Movies & TV Meta!

That's never happened before...

everyone in mos eisley is being reasonable and friendly. i'm going through argument withdrawl

who tried to migrate rubbish to who?

10:42 PM
@MikeEdenfield Yeah... I saw that lovely "religion" convo a few days ago...

@Catija I meant right now :)

@MikeEdenfield I know. I was implying that that argument may have lead to a calm... seeing as people are sore at each other. :P

no, we had a tag argument earlier. but we almost came to a consensus and I think the shock put some people in a coma.

@kalina It was faaar more difficult. Basically SciFi migrated an ID question, that might have been closed here for lacking detail, but might as well have stayed open. But before anything could happen SE staff, made attentive to it by an utter coincidence, stepped in and downright rejected the migration. Which led to confusion and dissatisfaction by basically all the parties.

Or they don't want to start anything else at the moment.

10:45 PM
then @steelerfan popped in and got everyone googling for pictures of cosplay girls, so that might be distracting them

@TomCody it's strange how SE care so much to step in and make individual adjustments after leaving their sites to create the mess in the first place
@MikeEdenfield well cosplaying is awesome

Meh, I've said to the SciFi guys what needed to be said and am glad I did. That thing's currently solved for me now.

@MikeEdenfield sorry about that....sounds like the change of topic helped :)

@TomCody what did you say?

@kalina Can be read in various chatrooms.

10:50 PM
@MikeEdenfield you guys were a great help, thanks again, at least I know what to expect at Comic-Con next month.

@TomCody for which you could provide links?

@kalina Meh, check the Agents of Nothing room for the most recent instance. That's pretty much all there was to say from my side. I don't really want to incite anything again. Read it if you want and make your own thoughts.

so much effort..!
what is it that SF&F believe M&TV "do wrong"?
oh, it's all @Catija's fault? :)

no, just the tag thing.

SF&F believe that M&TV's tagging is wrong?

sad to say, reading that tag discussion in the agents of nothing channel leaves me in a situation where I either have to agree with SF&F or say noting at all
no doubt I missed something crucial as the thought of agreeing with SF&F...
like a disclaimer at the top "all names have been changed to protect the identity of those involved and to confuse future reading"
but you knew I disagreed with tagging here anyway
:)

@kalina You're free to vote for whichever answer you prefer... or to construct one of your own. You're as much a member here as anyone.

@Catija hardly, I was merely dropping in to make sure there was still a pulse
I'm happy this room has more than 4 people in it for a change too
I miss the drama, a little

@kalina I thought that was why you abandoned us? But we can get you some drama if you want. How about genre tags? ;-)

@TomCody no I "abandoned" you because pointing out the failings was resulting in no change at all with lots of "oh stuff is changing but we're discussing it first" for months
I don't mind drama if stuff happens

Uhuh. Meh, whatever.

11:15 PM
besides, it wasn't just you, I stopped using everything on SE except chat occasionally

Seemed that you left specifically after one of our good old tag discussions in chat got passionate again.

@MovieReel Me neither.

@TomCody Did you have trouble learning the difference between "breathe" and "breath"?

@Catija Huh? Why?

11:57 PM
@TomCody Because that OP does... and I see Americans screw them up all the time... I just wondered if someone who doesn't speak English natively can manage to understand the difference, considering so many Americans are idiots.

Hmm, one is a noun and the other one the verb. Never had personal difficulties with that.

@TomCody Me neither. Just wondering. It's one of my pet peeves, really.
Ugh... I'm just delaying the inevitable... I need to answer those questions... and I should have been writing drafts all weekend so it was already done today.

But it's also hard to remember the actual learning process of something that has basically been flesh and blood for over a decade to me. Maybe I did have difficulties with it once.
