Q: Highest earning films by cost to earning ratio

sharkyI'm interested to know if there is a list of movies ranked by cost-to-earning ratio, defined as something like (box-office sales) / (film budget). Some data which can be used to construct such a list is on Wikipedia, often listed in the info box for each film under 'Budget' and 'Box office'.

Q: Horror/Comedy - Guy with Long Neck After Being Dragged by Head?

JesseI'm trying to find a movie that my Dad and I watched when I was younger. It was a horror/zombie movie but it also had to be a comedy. Twenty years later my Father and I still laugh about the guy "with the long neck." The film was: In color. In English. Was from the 90's. And I believe it was...

Q: Did Hugo Cabret and other characters really exist?

Faizan RabbaniIn Hugo, forgotten Georges Méliès's life, success and master piece films are revealed to us, but the movie was not just about him. It was about the boy Hugo and all his courgeous deeds. My question is did he really exist or it was just fantasy? As well as all the other characters shown in the ...

Q: Why is the 'Get to the chopper' so famous?

Sin Jeong-hunThe other day, I watched The Predator just to see why the 'Get to the chopper' is so famous. Finally, I heard the 'Get to the chopper!' line. But it was not funny or memorable at all. I had presumed that it was famous because of his Australian accent before watching the movie. (The Simpsons' Ra...

Q: Why machines didn't clear skies?

Faizan RabbaniIn The Matrix, humans blocked machines' access to solar energy. As a substitute power, the machines turned to harvesting the humans' bio electricity, while keeping them trapped in the Matrix. So my question is if machines are so much intelligent and advanced, then why didn't they simply wiped o...

How's it going in here?

12:04 PM
Hey

Hey @Faizan

I think you don't like my question?

I don't dislike it, I just don't think there is more to it than "Because they can't." But we will see. :) Why do you think the machines have to be able to clear the sky if they can run the matrix? Seem like totally unrelated tasks.

They are quite powerful. I mean the machine city in Revolutions?

That's like saying: If humans can build machines that let them drive at 200km/h, why can't they stop global warming?
Or if someone can program a computer, why can't he fix my car? :D

12:11 PM
Okay
But clouds were created by humans

Maybe they are just really good at the one thing but suck at the weather stuff :D
Yeah, but destroying something is easy, fixing it is hard.

Humans didn't destroy it? did they?
If humans (less powerful) can create clouds, then machines (very powerful) can clear them?

Well, in a way. AFAIR they polluted the atmosphere so badly that no sunlight would come through?

Yes
Machines so advance can not simply figure that out?

Not sure they really "created clouds", its more like pumping a lot of crap into the atmosphere. But I am not really an expert on this part of the story I have to admit.

12:15 PM
They can create such advance simulation and everything but they can not clear the skies :D
So am I :)
Thats why I asked this question

Yeah well I guess we will have to see if someone comes up with a satisfying answer. But I think the inability to fix it is just part of the story, otherwise they wouldn't need humans.

I agree
I have another question :D

@AndrewMartin I don't like to press myself to the foreground, though, and would like to discount any (false) impression that it is the moderator election I'm looking forward to most. The main point is really that we're a first class citizen among the SE sites. And I also would fear the day when I'm not able to cast close-votes freely if not 100% sure. It is just much better if you can act without large representative responsibility. Who's gonna incite all those "not enough detail"-votes then?

@ChristianRau Huh? What are you replying to?
Funny how the [graduating-eventually] tag is becoming a bit ironic over time. :D

12:34 PM
@atticae Just a comment.
@atticae Aren't all those tags ironic anyway?

@ChristianRau whatever it it.
I am happy that we got positive community response.

@AnkitSharma Sure, that sounds quite promising. But I don't want Movies & TV press any other site out of the queue, though, just because some impatient user cried for graduation.

@ChristianRau hehehhe....i don't think you are responsible for this changed condition.
It might be SE team already decided it and your question just bring it in front
Or maybe that queue was never fixed and they can change it whenever they want .
Re-sorted by activity?

@AnkitSharma Yeah, sure, I also don't think a single meta post revolves the whole SE business plan, but it makes a strange impression, and if we have compassion for anything, then it's a site not getting out of beta.
@AnkitSharma Unfortunately there wasn't said so much about the nature of the queue, but fortnately it doesn't seem to be so relevant for us.
Anyway, once the design stands I'll be the first one to cry it out as inappropriate and call for a 3-month reevaluation and a new design employee, muhahaha! ;-)

@ChristianRau its matter a lot to be in beta or not, trust, beta is said to be unreliable in content . I am working on a site from 3 year and its still in beta, It hurts.
@ChristianRau if i am not wrong then mostly designer stick with there plans. Only resolves bugs. They mostly ignore design changes.
@ChristianRau or should we start design recommendation in meta? are they listen this things?

12:47 PM
@AnkitSharma I think the designer will gather input when he has started, that's how I have seen it happen on other sites.

Contrary to SE opinion, the design for me at least is really the least important part about graduation, especially since I'm quite an unfunny no-nonsense guy in this regard and am thus pretty satisfied with the current streamlined beta design.
But as long as we don't get a totally dark background or funny pictures, I'll take what we get.

@ChristianRau Yeah that's why it's frustrating that the whole queue seems to be coupled to the design team progress. (if you can even call it that :P)
I feel like we have the same discussion every 200 days.

@AnkitSharma There was a post for that looong ago, but I don't think it's necessary. Haven't seen that on other sites, but I don't have too much experience with that anyway. If it would be contibutory, they would maybe have mentioned it.

Not like scifi for sure
Its darkest like hell and it sucks and cant open it in office
Attention seeker design

@AnkitSharma Heh, that should be the main criteria: "Looks as if I am working."

12:51 PM
@atticae heheheheh....then it should be like stackoverflow to fool office people :D
Should i bring it in front?

Q: What is the plan for the design of this website?

Lelouch LamperougeAre there any discussions going on about the UI, fonts, icons .. of this website? UPDATE: If I came up with some concept, how do I show to the community for approval? Who approves the design?

I would let the designer do his thing and wait until he comes to get input when he is ready to show something. I am sure many of us have some great ideas for designs, but I also think that designing is something that should be done by professionals and it's dangerous to have too many cooks too early.

I just want movie reel, oscar like award, Clapperboard and at the end a TV too

@AnkitSharma Yeah, I thought about oscars for badges, too, but it's probably way too filigrane to make much sense. I for one had also clapperboards in mind.

@ChristianRau Not as filigrane as Golden Globes, anyway ;D
But yeah while Oscars would certainly be cool, simpler is probably better when it comes to icons
Can we still kill Identify-this before graduating please? *hrhr*

1:12 PM
@atticae I definitely keep it under stricter surveillance after learning that we're at 28% already.

It's only getting harder the more there are. Probably impossible already with these numbers to get a majority to ditch them.

@atticae Well, once it's off-topic it's off-topic. Just requires much more closing effort to make the chnage from one day to the other. But enforcing a higher quality standard is first way to start. And while encouraged by other users to be more lenient, I might not make too big a deal anymore of simply close-voting 3-liners once they're in, especially from unregisterds.
Somewhere those in the community concered about it might have to take a stronger position and, really, if you're not registered you're just not coming back anyway and I might not care too much about scaring IDs away. Might not be the best attitude, but serious conditions require serious measures and my patience is overstretched at some point, too.

I think its better to give them close survillence

@ChristianRau What I am saying is that it will be hard to get a majority to rule it as offtopic in the first place, because it produces a big part of the site's traffic and questions. Not that I think that's relevant, just saying.

But maybe I'm just getting a little bitter at the moment, that 28% shocked me a bit. I should probably just calm down a little.

1:24 PM
We should have nipped that whole thing in the bud right from the start.
Now it's way harder.

I think academia.stackexchange.com have best suitable design
from upvote to badges

Then on the other hand, the people interested in asking those things are also the ones not giving a damn about the site so much. Sorry if that sounds harsh and is quite overgeneralizing, but honestly, that's the way it is. Though there are enough active people inclined on answering and with enough interest in those questions still.

There is a good portion of regulars who make their daily rep income that way. They will probably want to keep them around.

@atticae Well, it's never too late. English Language & Usage also founded a dedicated site for dumping LQ stuff.

@atticae are you talking about me :D

1:29 PM
@ChristianRau Yeah, I proposed an externalization to a "Guess-This-Movie" SE long ago. Would take someone who is actually interested in them to propose it on Area51 though, and I don't see that happening.

@AnkitSharma No one in particular, really. I don't follow the ID questions so I don't really know who solves them either. ;)
Btw we have 3 open bounties. Can't remember having seen that many at the same time before.
It's a good sign I guess.

The interesting thing is the ratio between asked and answered among the top users in this tag, speaks a bit about the fact that most of those questions are one-shots.
@atticae Haha, because I wanted that Hanukka hat. Don't underestimate the power of rep/badges/hats.

Ah heh. That explains it

Though, I had to get those Benector and Promoter badges sooner or later anyway.
After all, there are enough ID-this-movie sites already existing, and I doubt the questions there are much lower in quality than ours.

1:56 PM
Walt will be mad if we remove all Id's lol

2:24 PM
@MattD And now The Interview is dead. Wow indeed

2:41 PM
@AnkitSharma Not really. Won't be around much a few days from now anyway. No ID would certainly make me frequent M&TV even less later on, but whatever the majority rules is fine by me. I do prefer the idea raised here of tackling the root of the problem, though (short, sloppy questions from unregistered users) rather than the notion of ID questions itself.

2:53 PM
@Walt I bet it turns up online soon.

Q: Why didn't Aladdin (Disney, 1993) lend the lamp to Jasmine?

Sin Jeong-hunI watched Disney's Aladdin back in 1990's when I was a middle school student. Even though I was a child, I thought why Aladdin co...

@Walt @atticae There's word going aroudn that Sony is looking to do some kind of VOD (video on demand) deal to get the movie out there.
Personally I feel it's a huge mistake to cancel the movie like this, as it's basically giving in to terrorist demands. What's to stop another group from threatening violence in an effort to stop a movie from being released?

Q: Why not use the wyrms to win?

MattDWhen the Battle of the Five Armies begins, and Dáin arrives with an army of dwarfs to do battle, we see Azog has been using giant wyrms, which he refers to as "earth eaters" earlier in the film, to come up behind/beside the battlefield to flank everyone. My question is, why didn't Azog simply us...

I've added a tag for the latest Hobbit film, and at least got it started with an excerpt. Hope it's all in order.

@MattD Sure, why not. Finally someone takes part in the challenge.
Though, I would have thought the first question to be if the movie has friggin' spiders in it. ;-)

Haaaa, yeah, I thought about that. :P That's about all I can think of to ask so far, sort of need to let the movie settle, may see it a second time, preferably the HFR version as I didn't get around to seeing the second one in HFR.
Hobbit 3 isn't a bad movie, but it's note a terribly good one either. 2/3 of the movie is basically the battle, which you'd think would be awesome but ends up feeling very drawn out. The whole thing isn't very fulfilling, and the entire Hobbit film franchise hasn't been anywhere near as good as The Lord of the Rings, which is a shame because I feel The Hobbit is the better book.

@MattD My colleague is going to watch it in Dolby Atmos and claims it to be the ultimate experience, can't judge though.

3:35 PM
@ChristianRau That's how I saw it last night. Also saw Desolation of Smaug with Dolby Atmos.

@MattD Well, it's a prequel trilogy afterall, so what? ;-)

@ChristianRau Definitely a far better overall prequel trilogy than that OTHER prequel trilogy from a decade ago. :P

@MattD Well, whatever they wanted to achieve, thanks to the Streisand effect now a whole lot more people will watch it. Unless that was the goal, that plan pretty much backfired.

Sure, those are fun movies and I definitely enjoy them (don't know the new one, though). But yeah, somehow I don't fell as enthusiastic about them as with LotR.

Hobbit just feels so...fake in its world, if that makes sense. I really don't like that they seemed to use far more CG this time around than in The Lord of the Rings. The world felt more real and lived in with LotR as a result. Still can't believe Azog was a digital character....

@AndrewMartin I don't get it, the existing answers are providing entirely reasonable arguments. Sure, it isn't as variable as with Star Wars, but well, then we have just two answers (though, the argumentation is variable, too). But nevermind, to each his own, I'll be the first one to reopen-vote anyway.

@ChristianRau: Answers doesn't make it a good question. It's blatantly off-topic, as it's totally opinionated. I'm not that bothered, but if we're made a rule we may as well enforce it.

@AndrewMartin Then be sure to close-vote the Star Wars question, too. Ah, forget, don't dare to.

@ChristianRau: If it were edited or something similar, I would. There are tons of old, off-topic questions that are in the archives. A bit like at SO. There are loads of one-off, off-topic questions and just in general off-topic questions that either lie open or are protected.

Challenge accepted!
