My reputation at that corner point on his rep was about 975
EVen though my account was over 2 years old at that point

Reputation adjustment? Would never have thought this could have been a reason.
Another person who left before I joined is Macro. I was always wondering why he quit.
Hmm, he also seems to have left in 2012.
Rough year.

From interactions with him I get the impression he was pretty frustrated when he went.

With some of other users personally? So it was some kind of a conflict?

Even though the MC reputation loss on math.SE may not have been all that big a deal, sometimes an issue like that can come at the end of a sequence of other things. The actual trigger needn't be large

I don't see such things happening anymore (with high rep users). Or am I simply not aware of some cases...

@amoeba Again, this was right at the start of my regular participation so I don't have more than a brief discussion to go on
Generally things are pretty collegial
But they were generally so in the past.
One time I remember I got a downvote on an answer and queried it... and Macro gave me a nice earful (it was his downvote and he explained it in detail). However, that explanation (/detailed criticism) was a lot more helpful than the downvote was, because I understood what had bothered him.
It improved the standard of my participation
I think that was in his last days on site though.

Yes, every now and then I come across Macro's old answers and comments, and they are always very helpful, insightful, and friendly.
Cannot say this about Michael's contributions by the way.

What query were you looking at for the Epic/Legendary badges? All the ones I can find are clearly wrong

Macro's answers are exemplary... but sadly there are so few of them.
Hmm that one doesn't look right either.

It gives the right answer for me (not counting the one I just got of course).

12:30 AM
It looks to me like you hit it 10 times (9 not counting this one)
Maybe I miscounted

That's not what /reputation page says

Interesting. I cannot explain that. Perhaps some of them are 199
I could check it against the /reputation page for each day, but not right now

My badges accorded exactly with the graph (the graph for me I mean)
If the reputation page is accurate I would have had them much later.
All the ones I marked are actual 200 or more according to the graph.

How comes the /reputation page is wrong then?

12:42 AM
My guess is it's not counting something when it adds the things up at the end
It would be the same reason so many data.SE queries don't get it quite right -- likely some subtle issue that leads to an occasional miscount.
The rep page count is under by a long way for me.

Well, whatever. Are you going to watch the US debate now? I am debating with myself whether to watch, to go to bed, or to work a bit...

I have to work now so I won't be watching it.
You could check what you get when you track the Epic badge
on your profile

it says 10!

It's also correct.
They made sure that one was right
It must be a tricky calculation

good to know! thanks.

Ah well, I have some work-things I have to do now

See you

I have separated the population {0,1,2,0,1,2} with variance 5.1 into two samples, {0,1} with variance S² = 0.5, and with variance S² = 0.92. The pooled variance of the two samples is 4.96. I wonder if it is ok that it contradicts 5.1, the population variance?

Is it possible to fix the seed in Excel without resorting to VBA?
The usual search-and-ye-shall-find approach says no, but the world is full of creative minds :)

@Zaid: best to ask at StackOverflow, like this: stackoverflow.com/search?q=%5Bexcel%5Drandom+number+seed

@LittleAlien, that's a question for the main site; it isn't a chat item.

You might get a kick out of this - do not fire up RStudio. It's more to pass it over to your lay friends...
