Poor Latin roots. Ironically a case of "Sic semper tyrannis", since (in my understanding) a lot of Latin usage in English was "forced," like the rules against splitting infinitives and ending sentences with prepositions. Then again, Latin does so much for expressiveness, and so much is lost with the subtleties in Latin roots. E.g. "disinterested" is a great word, but it's usually conflated with "uninterested" nowadays. And RIP "enormity"
