A: How to speed up queries on a large 220 million rows table (9 gig data)?

FrankyBkkI handled tables for the German Government with sometimes 60 million records. We had a lot of this tables. And we needed to know many times the total rows from a table. After talking with Oracle and Microsoft programmers we was not so happy ... So we, the group of database programmers, deci...

1998 was in the past - they are still rolling an 'interesting' solution?

A: how do I subtract the value field from another and put the answer in a new field in MySQL

yemetIf you know nothing about SQL and there will be more classes then I strongly suggest that you read a tutorial. There many good free tutorials on the internet ie: http://www.w3schools.com/sql/ https://www.codecademy.com/learn/learn-sql The query below should work assuming that discount_percent is...

Is the answer bad, does it deserve -1?
The question is certainly bad but should we punish users that answer bad homework questions?

@ypercubeᵀᴹ The question to ask is: is it a bad homework question answer?
Clearly someone thought so.

@PaulWhite Yeah. Votes are secret anyway. I wasn't planning on voting that, in any diretcion

@ypercubeᵀᴹ I had a look to see if it was worth correcting the downvote, but I have a problem with anything referencing w3fools

@TomV haha yeah. Perhaps the downvote was because of that link!

@TomV "Correcting" a down vote is never a good reason imho. -2/+10 is hardly a correction anyway.

@PaulWhite Correcting in the sense that it might have been an uncalled for grudge vote or something which in this case it wasn't
so I didn't, since the answer didn't deserve an upvote IMO

Answer only as good as question --blam

Ha. Yeah well I shouldn't presume to tell people how to vote or not vote, that's up to them, but I have my own views that I am happy to share :)

You know I wouldn't listen anyway :)

Well that's true. And I am OK with that.
I should have closed that question when I first saw it. The answer was already there, which somehow dissuaded me. Not sure why.
Perhaps I was practicing being inconsistent.

dbo could imply a Sybase product, not necessarily MSSQL, and there's always a chance the OP is working with an old enough version of their db that it doesn't support window functions. True, re: exists (possibly, depending on indexes), but the current configuration allows a trivial adjustment to pull back the top n per category. ;-) — Craig 33 mins ago
