Q: New navigation for Stack Overflow is in alpha testing

SklivvzAs announced 6-8 weeks ago... In a major effort to move as much UX cheese as possible in a single deployment significantly improve the site browsing experience, we have deployed a new version of the site navigation to Stack Overflow, Meta Stack Overflow and Meta Stack Exchange. The catch is t...

@dezso Sorry! I like hanging out with DBAs, though – hopefully that lessens my guilt a little. :)

Morning all
A good time was had by all at Drinkies last night. @MarkSinkinson met the gang.
@Bluefeet, we discsussed this last night and concluded that perhaps our experience with building an offline community might give us something to offer. Perhaps you might propose an action research project where you can come and participatively study our offline community building process.

It was good to meet everyone last night!

Sorry I couldn't be there.
I'll probably be back next time.
@MartinSmith Have you heard anything about getting the demo scripts from the precon yet?

10:33 AM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells you think SE management are stupid don't you ;)

Sorry, got that one the wrong way round. The difference:
o Representativeness: Stupid, therefore must be management based on understanding of typical management traits.
o Avaiability: Management, therefore must be stupid based on prior experience of working with management.
@JamesLupolt Never mind.

11:06 AM
please everyone give themselves a big pat on the back :)

Do you have a higher-res version of those?

I didn't drink all that much but I'm feeling slightly under the weather.

Q: sharepoint DBA.

Steve DBAWhat exactly makes a 'Sharepoint DBA' different from a normal SQL DBA. What are the differences in competency and responsibility? What are the differences is daily database support?

One's a useful member of society. The other needs to take a long hard look in the mirror and wonder where it all went wrong.

Can't even touch Sharepoint, being a Sharepoint 'DBA' means you sit on your rear all day and watch backups

Hello All
Anyone know where I can try out SQL Server 2016 ? preview

Do they even have the CTP out yet? I thought it was June/July before us mere mortals could get it

@Kin I think you have to be a special person to do that

Yeah, that may be something that Paul and Aaron may be able to get their hands on but us commonfolk must wait

Kin
@MarkSinkinson I thought so .. but people are trying it and blogging about it .. Just like @AaronBertrand did some awesome posts related to JSON support ... etc
I will wait then ..

2:23 PM
TOCCATA AND FUGUE IN D MINOR

Kin
@swasheck good one

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells what the f...?

so, adding to a question would not really be a constructive edit, correct? To me, that is a way-to-generic tag.

Yeah, I dont think adding sql really adds to the value

2:59 PM
i'd like to add the to that

3:09 PM
wouldn't be amiss

because you can never be too sure

3:33 PM
deploying at Friday afternoon ... sucks

hey, at least you already are on the afternoon

@ypercube who did that? You should smack them

Not only I had to do it
but now they want to deploy a fix
so, another deployment
The only good thing is that it doesn't take me more than 10 mins
@Lamak there's that as well.

At least you didn't have someone give you (poor) instructions for fixing a staff payment system and then disappear on two weeks holiday before you could question why what he requested isn't possible..

3:55 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells wow programming a self driving car is easier than I thought.

@Zane Hm, self-driving car? You think it was the car computer that posted the question?

Q: Trace Flag 4199 - Enable globally?

SkagalakThis may fall under the category of opinion, but I'm curious if people are using trace flag 4199 as a startup parameter for SQL Server. For those that have used it, under what circumstances did you experience query regression? It certainly seems like a potential performance benefit across the b...

Q: LDF files vs. TRN files vs. Tempdb.MDF+LDF files.:

Mitchell McClureWe have a dilemma… We have all of our MDF and LDF files in the same…\192.168.6.22\d$\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\DATA\Production...folder. We have all of our TRN and BAK files on the…\192.168.6.22\r$...drive. We have read several articles stating that our Tempdb.MDF+LDF files need to be re...

Wow this dude posted his IP address in his question. That seems like a bad idea.

4:29 PM
private IP, no biggie

4:42 PM
@zane ... thanks for posting those two questions
also ... "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" is a forgotten treasure. i actually played that in a HS orchestra

5:24 PM
@Zane Did they edit in the 6-min time window? I don't see a public IP there.

@TheConfusedDBA unless you penetrate the firewall, then you'd know where the data is.

@MaxVernon If the firewall is penetrated, then finding internal IP addresses/services is not hard.

@ypercube agreed. Just begs the question, "why"
the bigger question for me is why are you connecting to the databases over the LAN at all. Unless it's a 10GB direct connection. But then, why wouldn't you use iSCSI or FC.
or even better, get a couple of PCI SSDs and slap 'em in the bad boy directly.
@bluefeet congrats, @bluefeet ! awesome!

5:59 PM
@TheConfusedDBA still kinda wierd.
@swasheck ??

6:38 PM
Comic Sans for the win!

and Sybase? Even better!

Yeah, and 12.5, too! I'm gonna laminate that baby!

Laminate, frame and treasure that piece of history

nice
but sybsystemdb ?
@MaxVernon Change one to "syskebabs" and it's a nice puzzle. "Find the mistake"

6:59 PM
@ypercube that whole thing is a mistake if you ask me.
Other than it gave rise to SQL Server, of course.

and GO. Can't underestimate the importance of that.

Kin
@MaxVernon Sybase ASE .. still in existence

7:34 PM
@Kin we use it to this day.

Kin
@MaxVernon we do to .. 15.5 ; 15.7 :-(

@MaxVernon when did that come out.

@Zane 2001. A DBA Oddity.

8:12 PM
@MaxVernon yes. sybase is a comedy

@MaxVernon you mind if I edit your answer for mysql?

@ypercube by all means. Can you do that with the answer deleted? The other option would be to just add the correct answer for MySQL.

sybase is a wonderful database server

you can undelete now

Hallo, @swasheck. How's it going?

8:16 PM
flabulous. and you, @mmarie?

It's been a weird week and I want a nap
and maybe some ice cream

sounds weirdbad

yeah, I had jury duty this week. I got chosen for a trial on the rape of a 15 yo girl.

wow. that had to have been difficult to sit through

yeah, and the police seemed to have been negligent

8:19 PM
@MaxVernon it shows how much compatibility there is between dbms.
3 statements, 3 changes needed.

Not gathering sufficient evidence at the scene. not looking for the guy whom she said did it from the very beginning.

(and 3 more to kick the GOs)

@ypercube interesting pigeon post.

At least I won't have jury duty for another 3 years

@ypercube I appreciate your edit!
@ypercube I have MySQL to store WordPress rows; however I know next-to-nothing else about it.

8:21 PM
@mmarie that sort of thing is infuriating. i understand mistakes being made in some capacity, but those are the kinds that are just not acceptable. "accidentally shooting someone" is also one of those mistakes that's not really excusable

Kin
Have a nice weekend All !

You too, @Kin

@Kin thanks! and likewise to you too!

8:40 PM
@kin don't tell me what to do

@KrisGruttemeyer happy, happy, joy, joy. I'm not on call this weekend!
