@user606521: That's like telling a French person that he should "finally understand that he must not expect proper French in his conversations, but gibberish from Google translate is equally valid". It's the other way round: ORM users must understand that ORMs are crude crutches that are popular with lazy developers trying to avoid learning SQL. Fair enough, I am lazy, too. But don't turn it around on us. To use the full potential of your RDBMS, you need to speak the native language, which is SQL. Your ORM is doing a poor job. Besides, "SQL database" is a misnomer. SQL is a query language. — Erwin Brandstetter 6 hours ago

Q: Select the last massage for each user

Алексей СахникPlease help me with a query. I want to write a query that selects every last massage from each user (I want to create a dialog page for my site). My tables: users: id, name, surname massages: id, sender, recipient, text, date This is what I tried, but it doesn`t work: SELECT users.id AS id, ...

There is one to one massaging system so we need one userID to fetch message or related to given userID — Ajeet Kumar 3 hours ago

@dezso Hah, I need this. :P

Let's hear it for covering indexes!

Hip Hip Hooray! Covering Indexes!
how's that?

JNK
perfect

@JNK Have you tried using NOLOCK instead?

JNK
2:08 PM
@JamesLupolt oh good idea
First I'll just see how long I can hold my breath...

2:50 PM
Hi @spaghettidba

@ypercube I nearly had to work on a pick system in 2000/2001. Fortunately(?), I got put onto a different project which ended up being converting dBase4 forms app to Access

Hi @PaulWhite

@spaghettidba So you had some questions about site moderation?
Specifically regarding this question:
0
Q: How can we select data from another table during an insert?

swapnil lotankarI tried the statement as follows... insert into wtdocversion values (( select id from wtdocmaster),'col2','col3');

Yes, I'm having a hard time understanding why legitimate questions get closed for "lack of clarity"
I admit it's subjective, but I see this pattern here more than elsewhere

@spaghettidba well, what's the question that's been asked in that post?

2:53 PM
@spaghettidba The close "reason" doesn't always reflect the first vote reason. Five people (or one mod) have to vote to close a question. They can select different reasons.

@Lamak the one that's been answered
I see

@spaghettidba what was answered was how to insert data from another table, the title hints to something else, hence the lack of clarity

I think that one is a pretty poor question by any measure. It's all a bit basic for this site. Basic questions are often closed by the community, particularly if it's just basic syntax.

I'm under the impression that the site's purpose is beyond helping people then.
It's a shame, because that's what I'm here for

@spaghettidba As I understand it, the main goal is to create a library (wiki) of good questions and answers that have wide applicability for future users of the site. It's not a forum, where the goal is often to ask and answer as many questions (including duplicates) as possible. Neither is necessarily better, just different.

2:57 PM
I see

@spaghettidba If you understand the question, then you have the ability to edit into something that would be usable and udnerstandable to anyone with the same problem.

@spaghettidba Also, closing is not permanent. As you can see, the question is "on hold". If the question is improved, it can be reopened.

I don't have enough privileges to edit questions

@spaghettidba it's what @PaulWhite says, but still, it is to help people with advanced issues about databases, for a question that basic, you should google it

@spaghettidba you can suggest an edit, it will go into a review queue

2:58 PM
(or, not you, but the user asking)

Anyone can suggest an edit.

OK then, so I was right thinking that my mindset doesn't fit properly with the rules here.

@spaghettidba And more to the point, you can still "help" the questioner in comments to the question. Such help can include getting them to improve the question so it becomes on-topic again.
@spaghettidba What is your mindset?

And after using your search engine if you are unable to find an answer, then come here. Show what you've done, explain what you're attempting to do. Provide table structures, sample data. That's helpful for you because it shows you've really tried. It's helpful for those who answer questions because that's what we need to know. It's helpful for posterity as you have then defined the reference question for everyone else trying to solve the same problme

I've always thought that there's no such thing as a poor question

3:01 PM
@spaghettidba How can I fix my SQL problem?
There's a poor question right there :)

And I also find inappropriate smacking people for asking poor questions

@spaghettidba really?

@PaulWhite Here's a poor answer: "google it"

how can you think that there are no poor questions?

3:02 PM
@spaghettidba I know. I got sick of that sort of response on SSC ;)
@spaghettidba Placing a question on hold isn't "smacking" anyone. It's inviting improvement.

@PaulWhite it's actually banned (or was)

@Lamak Quite right too.

yup, I agree

@PaulWhite That's where I come from, as you know

@spaghettidba poor question

3:03 PM
@spaghettidba That's why I mentioned it.
@spaghettidba Besides, if you really want to "help" someone with a forum-style extended discussion, that's what chat rooms are for.
Create a chat room for you and the questioner, invite them there for discussion.
So, I don't really see what the problem is, unless the problem is "this site doesn't work the way I am used to on SSC".

@spaghettidba have you spent some time in SO?. There are so many ways a question can be poor, lack of information, posts that don't include any question, questions that haven't been researched, questions that have been asked thousands of times

Also, there are plenty of good SQL questions that aren't on-topic here. That doesn't mean they're not interesting or valid, just they don't fit the Q & A model very well.

What was the deleted comment in that q?

@ypercube Snark.

@PaulWhite Yes, that's probably part of the problem. More specifically, that's not how I treat people, here or anywhere else. I don't like abrasive comments in particular, especially when directed to newbies in desparate need.

3:08 PM
@PaulWhite which rightly should be deleted

Something like "do you even understand your own question?"

ah
@spaghettidba We all agree then, snark is not good.

I would think if they were in desperate need, they'd have stuck around. Looks like they asked their question and went away

@spaghettidba part of the problem is people are frustrated with bad questions and users who don't care to post anything that has quality. That's where the snark comes in. But if you see it, then flag it to be removed.

@spaghettidba Neither do we, hence the removal.

3:09 PM
@spaghettidba that's a good mentality, but it doesn't mean that the question isn't poor
3

That's certainly a poor question, but not hopeless. The OP can always come back and edit according to the guidelines.
I'm ok with putting it on hold

@spaghettidba that can still happen, and the post can be reopened

Violent agreement breaks out.
3

@PaulWhite :-)

@spaghettidba The question was rightfully put "on hold" though. I could see (probably) why the statement failed (and even that the answer solves the issue) but the question needs editing to make everything clear - for everyone. What error they got, what they are trying to do etc. You - everyone - can suggest edits.

3:11 PM
Ok then
Thanks everyone for steering my understanding of the rules and the general sentiment here

that entire comment thread could be removed from that question

I can do it for my own comments

There are so many alternatives. If reopening failed, you could always paraphrase the question, then ask and answer it yourself. That's another way of adding value to the collective knowledge.

@blue
@bluefeet done

@bluefeet fair enough :)

@billinkc I prefer gila monsters

The original q should have been deleted and a new one opened but I guess we can follow a simple road and reopen it: dba.stackexchange.com/questions/93747/…

@mmarie Declined. Non poisonous lizards plzkthxbai

@ypercube Voted.

Well I've edited this into a better question, do we want to reopen it?

not a lizard

Still seems poor quality IMO

Marginal. Voted to reopen b/c feet of blue put effort into it.

Well at least it makes sense. It's still a RTFM read the manual type of question

Four reopen votes should be enough on dba.se

removed the snark

3:33 PM
I was only second-guessing the answer to that question anyway. I assume that is what the question was about, but quite honestly, it may have been something completely different they wanted...

i'm always losing to win

Based on title, they could very well have been trying to look up a reference id based on source value

@MarkSinkinson We may never know.

@dezso argument I had yesterday with coworker
NOLOCK vs a covering index for a blocking issue
the index was applied last night and blocks have dropped drastically

@billinkc probably, they are an unregistered user

@JNK a truly scientific test would be to drop the index and implement nolock
@dezso do you know how to get plythonu up and running on pg 9.4?

@swasheck Linux/windows/Mac?

@CraigRinger ... not sure if you get this from me. if not, maybe @JNK could ping you? anyway. HALP!

@swasheck Did you have it running with 9.3 (and the problem is only with 9.4)?

4:03 PM
@ypercube no. stop with your sensical nonsense.

@swasheck ypercube hides under a rock (but not before adding another nonsense: stackoverflow.com/questions/21323236/…)

@ypercube yes. that's the answer that i tried last night that started me on this magical mystery tour

@Zane Saw what you said about the job. Good luck man, I think it's a good call.

@MikeFal I already applied this morning.

Cool

5:31 PM
Hopefully it does. If not I won't exactly be heartbroken.

Do you know Jes Borland?

@swasheck I asked for her thoughts on applying on twitter and then we had a quick email conversation.

what on earth happened to Mickey Rourke?

He's old.

that's not just old though

@PaulWhite Ha! The great @Paul editing @billinkc's SSIS answer on SO? :D

@Marian welcome to the land of the living

@swasheck stranger things have happened, right? :)

Here's an odd question: If you have a clustered index, and then change the name of a column in that index, does it force a rebuild of the index?

6:03 PM
@ypercube Yeah he looks like a totally diff person than he did in his 20s. I just find it remarkable that as destroyed as he looks now, it actually seems to be an improvement over a few years ago.
Sorry, why am I talking about this
Time to go home... have a good day

@MikeFal with sp_rename?

JNK
@MikeFal pretty sure its metadata change in the table
I don't think the index stores the column names just the column ids
For a filtered index it MIGHT but I'm not sure, I think the filter is stored as a string
but you can see this by looking at sys.indexes

GIVE IT A TRY!
2

JNK
yeah that too

6:20 PM
@MikeFal it's only metadata change.
tested now on a small db :D

Should I get a Torta or a Vietnamese sammich?

So tempted to kick you for that

@Marian :) Just minor formatting.

@JNK @Marian Thanks, we were just testing that here as well. Just hadn't heard of doing that before.

@PaulWhite and he didn't jump at your throat yet?

@Marian He's in a meeting. I think.

@PaulWhite Or getting soft.. (old) :D

@Zane nice choice

Soooo good.

I had Venezuelan and it was superior, although the waiter was slow as molasses
Arepa (Spanish pronunciation: [aˈɾepa]) is a flatbread made of ground maize dough or cooked flour prominent in the cuisine of Colombia and Venezuela. It is eaten daily in those countries and can be served with various accompaniments such as cheese (cuajada), avocado, or (especially in Venezuela) split and used to make sandwiches. Various sizes, maize types, and added ingredients are used to vary its preparation. It is similar in shape to the Mexican gordita and the Salvadoran pupusa. Arepas can also be found in Panama, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the Canary Islands. == Charac...

Apparently I didn't notice a bill for a copay on one of my radiology bills.

ah

7:52 PM
No, I don't think I'm the one who doesn't understand.
I don't think you understand. By "existing" database, I meant the database that is being restored. Which I would think is exactly what you want to do. To clarify: I have a database B on my local system. I make a backup of database A on a different server, copy the *.bak file to my local system, and then use this script to restore the *.bak file to database B. It correctly restores. Obviously database A isn't touched. And my Database B is now a copy of database A. — pmbAustin 2 mins ago

JNK
@AaronBertrand "existing" obviously means "not existing yet"

I don't think you understand. Up is Down, Down is purple. Left is mayonnaise. Got it? The restore of the flizziflaze leads to the umblepumple of the files
Yikes

@pmbAustin how would this be useful for others who are searching this? I imagine if they are searching this then they have the same problem as the OP. A problem that this answer doesn't address since you are talking about restoring over and not creating a new copy on the same instance. — Zane 7 secs ago

Aaron, do you have a post about how to properly move databases via backup and restore and the perils of just detaching?

@MikeFal you around?

@billinkc hmm, I don't think so
If I did, I would have pointed Quent at it.
Anyway, as it turns out, yes they did try to back up the databases by detaching them, and they haven't learned that valuable lesson yet, but I think it's coming soon...

aaron rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard,

@billinkc i flagged this. why hasn't @JNK removed it yet?

@swasheck because it exists to archive forever what a jerk off Quent is.

Like, seriously
Do you realize that what you've done by "priming" the backup file to the new database using the SSMS GUI or whatever is actually restoring the database WITH MOVE? — Aaron Bertrand 16 secs ago
