If you guys would like serverfault.com/questions/625870/… flag it for migration. It's likely to get closed on SF.

7:09 AM
@swasheck It's hard to guess without a copy of the data to examine. Ordinarily I would not expect the plan to recompile after that many modifications, so something is missing there. Other details might matter too e.g. which version/cardinality estimator were you using ... and so on.
@JNK That's nothing. I recently investigated an issue, only to find out I had written about it already!

7:24 AM
@Iain thanks, flagged.

Is there a replacement for OBJECTPROPERTY(…, 'ExecIsDeleteTrigger') in the form of a system catalog?
Aha, sys.events looks promising...

7:55 AM
Sys.triggers / sys.objects?

@AndriyM Why do you want a 'replacement'? I usually use OBJECTPROPERTYEX rather than OBJECTPROPERTY.

8:11 AM
@PaulWhite I wanted to filter a result set on that property and predicates like FUNCTION(Column) = Value always make me think about SARGability. Performance wasn't important in that particular case but I thought it might help to know in the future.

@AndriyM Fair enough.

8:26 AM
@Iain Flagged. If there are people who can answer it, it's more probable to be found in this site that SF

8:45 AM
@AndriyM I do remember a message of @Aaron's where he said he always prefers system views in place of functions.

9:05 AM
@Marian I remember him saying something like that too. I think it was about concurrency or something.

9:26 AM

@ypercube I'd suggest setting up an alarm clock ringing in 5-minute intervals.

1 hour later…
10:38 AM
@ypercube I'd be inclined to look at some form of power setting at the OS level

@SimonRigharts Could be. Perhaps they should check if their java module has some "keepalive" option.

11:06 AM
@ypercube @SimonRigharts The wait_timeout is in wrong section of my.cnf. I think it will get ignored in [mysqld_safe].

yes, you are right.

I think they will get a better answer from someone who knows more about JDBC connection pooling than me though

@James changing the elevator/scheduler setting to deadline or noop did not help. I have changed innodb_doublewrite as well and it looks like the stall times have gone up from 1-2 minutes to 3-4 minutes. WTF.

@the-wabbit Sadness.

WTF is a synonym of MySQL.

11:21 AM
I'm getting mad. I will not be surprised if I start dreaming killing MySQL and Oracle engineers.
I just hope I will manage not to cross the line between dreams and reality.

To be fair, Oracle took over MySQL only recently. They are not responsible for the whole mess.

Mmh, the Sun acquisition was in 2010. That's 4 years and a couple of releases.
I would think they deliberately have chosen to set priorities in a way which seems to affect (or at least not to improve) the product's stability.

It's just a Google search page because I think you're fairly capable of following the relevant links there, and discover why UDFs in check constraints are a bad idea, without me having to copy and paste each link individually for you... — Aaron Bertrand 20 secs ago
@Marian It's about isolation mostly, and it's really restricted to the metadata helpers like OBJECT_ID, OBJECT_NAME, etc. I should do some testing with OBJECTPROPERTY - I have a blog post coming out soon about this.
I don't think OBJECTPROPERTY is as complex under the covers - it's older and I suspect it's not prone to the same problem.

@the-wabbit I wouldn't say they affected the stability on a negative way.

11:36 AM
The constraint can't even be added to the table if there already exists a row with IsSuccess = 1 ... and if the constraint is added to an empty table (which isn't the OP's use case), no row with IsSuccess = 1 could ever be added. The important part to note here is that the constraint checks the existing data in the table and the row(s) just inserted. — Aaron Bertrand 36 secs ago

@AaronBertrand lmgtfy?

But a lot of installations and kits (like Wordpress, Drupal, etc.) are old out there and using the MyISAM engine. Which is not improved any more. Focus is given on InnoDB.

@the-wabbit well, usually I post a direct link, but in this case there are several. Gordon is a big boy and should have been able to read the links without being a smartass about it.

InnoDB is not less broken, just broken in a different way :)

@the-wabbit I dunno. I'd say InnoDB is less broken than MyISAM, but I'm no MySQL expert

11:41 AM
@AaronBertrand Isn't a filtered unique index on (updateID) WHERE success = 1 the answer here? Or I'm not following the question?
Hm, no. It seems they want soemthing different.

@ypercube No, I thought so too, but that doesn't quite work, since it would still allow rows with 0 to be inserted. I think a trigger should be used here.

Should we re-open it?

Yes I did, sorry that was jumping the gun
Now Gordon's answer is venturing off into the twilight zone
0
A: Constraint that would not accept a data if the value is true(1)

Gordon LinoffI think you would have to do this by defining a function. check constraints only work on one row's worth of data, and there is nothing within a row that distinguishes an allowable update or failed update. I also cannot think of a way to use a unique index for this problem. But, something like ...

@AaronBertrand It is. Constraints that involve more than one rows of are not easy - if possible - to do.

JNK
12:15 PM
@PaulWhite I've had similar things where I search for a very specific problem and find a 2 year old answer I wrote on SO :)

12:30 PM
@JNK From time to time, I stumble upon a question with a well-researched answer which I want to upvote - only to discover that I can't because it is my answer.

1 hour later…
1:58 PM
good morning everyone

yo yo yo!
Oh wait you weren't an American in the 90's.
Good Morning!

@Zane Lamak?! He was born American as far as we know ;)

2:15 PM
@Zane no need, in this times I can just use the "Yo" app
(which is, to me, one of the most ridiculous apps in existence)

hello, Is there a Visual Studio Deveploper edition like SQL developer Edition microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/…, that the price would be not too expesive, less than 100 dollars?

@Lamak There is a yo app?

Yes, It's only function is to say "yo"

and got a lot of money from people

2:22 PM
> The app has received USD$1 million in investment from a group of investors led by Moshe Hogeg, CEO of Mobli, who had originally asked Arbel to design a single-button app to call his assistant.[2] In July 2014 the app was also released for Windows Phone.[3] The app was valued at between $5 and $10 million in July 2014 and received a further $1.5 million in funding

I should make a "Cheers" app for the UK

@ypercube oh....
I'm sad now.

> Joachim Fels, an economist at Morgan Stanley, expressed interest in the app due to its simplicity

JNK
@ypercube or an "Excuse me" app for Canadia

@PaulWhite sure. sorry i left out that information. sql server 2014. both estimator versions (using trace flaggery). specifically recompiling the plan with option (recompile), though (so as to brute force no parameter sniffing, though i'm sure i'm missing something given the trivial plan).

2:36 PM
@Lamak Apparently we should all quit our jobs and build mobile apps instead.

mini-boom... please vtc dup (maybe @bluefeet)

Q: How to get all the values which are comma separated against one value of a table in vertica

AbhishekI have one table in vertica. Table name sub_temp. Mapping key is an identity column.Data is as follows: MAPPING_KEY | SUBSCRIBER_KEY | DATASOCCODE -------------+----------------+------------- 1 | 1 | 123 2 | 1 | 456 250001 | 1 |...

@billinkc My free trial is over, I want to buy one but is too expensive, I think there would be something like the SQL developer edition by 60 dollars

@EmilioGort are you a student?

no...

2:40 PM
I don't see that it expires. The VS Online junk probably does but I've got it sitting on a VM and it works fine visualstudio.com/en-us/products/visual-studio-express-vs

@James apparently so

but I'm learning .net,SSRS and SSIS,

SSRS is boring.

I think I'll create Oye! app and rule the Spanish speaking app market

@EmilioGort SSRS => SQL Server Express Advanced Tools

2:42 PM
@Kermit done

Properly, there'd be an upside down exclamation point there but charmap is not cooperating

@bluefeet danke schoen

yes but the express edition is limited to the amount of data I think
I need to process millions of records
I have the sql developer edition
I was looking for the visual studio but the cheaper I saw is like 2k dollars

SSDT is free.

@Zane thanks I'm going to review it, thanks

2:52 PM
You're using this in a non prod environment right?

yes just in dev

@billinkc I would imagine that it already exists

Yeah then you should be good to download and us Data Tools.

@Zane thanks

3:07 PM
love when people accept the answer, then edit the question and unaccept
bozo

@Zane If you think that, you are doing it wrong (or whoever gathered the report requirements is doing it wrong).

You and steve wake...

This comment amuses me
I'm newer to MDX than Rob Ford is to sobriety. Im not sure if the Keys are the same, but the captions are. To be honest, I don't even know what information to give you such that you are able to answer my question effectively. Super String Theory is easier for me to wrap my head around. — Gemione 5 mins ago

That's a good description.

@billinkc what about steve?

3:15 PM
The two people in the world I've heard profess a love for SSRS

Don't forget Doug Lane

I bet Paul Turley and Stacia probably would too but it's so rare to hear
I've never actually heard him utter the words

I have. Though usually followed by "but I'd love it more if Microsoft actually worked on it"

i can agree with that

A little birdie has said such a thing is happening

3:17 PM
Chris Wolff apparently has a love/hate relationship for SSRS, but he loves PowerView more.

Is he a coloradian?

Yah, he works with me as well.

Was he the guy sitting with us after Springs?

Big guy, REALLY red hair?

yeah

3:18 PM
That's him

Power View is too limited right now
it's the beginning of something cool
and SSRS is being worked on. It will be available inside of Power BI for 0365 soon.

i have a hate/hate relationship with SSRS, but it's still better than Cognos
3

@mmarie I'm just not a fan of designing reports. I don't find it as fun.

@mmarie Apparently the concept of SSRS in O365 confuses Chris. He gave me a very odd facial expression and asked "why" when I relayed the info.

@swasheck To be fair, using an Etch-A-Sketch would be better than cognos

3:20 PM
I will stay off of my soapbox for now, except to say this: To most end users, that is all your Data Warehouse is. You can create the best model, the most effective ETL, but your end users usually see none of that. Your reports (or the methods by which they do ad hoc) are the way you deliver information to clients. The entire purpose of a DW is to deliver info to the business.

@billinkc all's fair in hatred of ignorant bi tools and war

@MikeFal Because they will never make Power View as flexible as SSRS. Sometimes you need detail reports. And sometimes you need very exact formatting.
Companies are never going to give up SSRS and they shouldn't. Power View isn't really for standardized reporting and there is still a need for that.

@mmarie Fair enough. I told him he should ask you about it at SQL Sat KC, as this is out of my realm.

cool

@MikeFal @mmarie tucker is trying to figure out how to do a ReportServer AG

3:23 PM
@swasheck The database or the actual SSRS service?

why is it any different than any other AG?

@mmarie as true as that may be that doesn't mean I have fun using it. Query and index tuning are fun for me to do. SSIS development I also find quite enjoyable.

@MikeFal both of them
@mmarie the ssrs service requires some ... finagling
(apparently)

@swasheck as @mmarie, database is a simple matter. Just like any other DB on an AG. For the actual SSRS implementation, you need to do a scale out deployment

@MikeFal yeah. it's his thing. i am not involved at all

3:24 PM
It's not an actual AG, you get HA of having multiple SSRS nodes serving up reports. so HA + load distribution.
Yes, but tell him that I said not to try and be to clever. ;)

i think we're going to ramp up and try to do a scale-out deployment and demonstrate the clear superiority of SSRS over Cognos

JNK
@swasheck let me know if you have numbers on that
since we are supposed to evaluate alternatives to SSRS, including cognos

i miss eating crayons

@JNK it's an internal black-ops thing. not really ever going to happen because "cognos is the standard." however, if we can use report designer to copy some of the reports and then demonstrate a code quality and performance improvement, then at least we can remind them that it's their model that sucks and not sql server

3:29 PM
@Kermit You seem more like a lead paint chip eater

@billinkc i get that a lot

@billinkc did you live near power lines as a kid?

@swasheck Good luck with that. Let me know how it works out for you.

@swasheck Yeah, and my parents gave me large quantities of copper wire to play with. They'd say "Go lasso some clouds"

it may not be the case. i know there was some rumbling about it in the past

3:31 PM
@swasheck Near nuclear power stations.

@ypercube clearly the case, from his profile pic

Power lines, Power stations, now Power View.

3:46 PM
Raspberries are just too fragile to buy at the market. If you aren't picking them out of your yard they just aren't very good.

Just gotta eat them within a day or so

@swasheck did Paul answer your stats question yesterday. I didn't see it until I was on my phone.

@Zane we buy organic raspberries and they're very good. Always a couple of bad ones in there, but overall quite high quality.

@Zane not enough info.

@swasheck bummer.

3:49 PM
yeah. it's weird.
nice

JNK
@Zane if you get them from the source they are good
if you buy ones at the grocery store that have travelled 2000 miles or more yeah they are gonna be squished

4:37 PM
Ok, DBAs, I need help. I had to DBA promote a stored procedure to production. It works perfectly in the other environments. When I run it in prod I get
Msg 2797, Level 16, State 1, Procedure DW_Column_Profile, Line 18
The default schema does not exist.
I understand this to mean that there is a non-existent default schema set for my user...
when i select schema_name() I get null
i don't have a specific login. I think i have access through an AD group that is mapped to a login or something. How can i figure how what login it is that has no default schema on the database?

SCHEMA_NAME() expects an argument (schema_id) so I expect that to be NULL.
SELECT ORIGINAL_LOGIN(), USER_NAME(), SUSER_SNAME()

ok. those all return the same thing

The default schema is set at the database level, so you need to map sys.server_principals to sys.database_principals to figure out what the default schema is at the db level (they join on sid).
(Also you can probably get around this completely by calling the procedure right, e.g. EXEC dbo.DW_Column_Profile instead of EXEC DW_Column_Profile)
And make sure the references inside are also explicit by schema. Then it doesn't have to check the current user's default schema at all.

Hmmm..I ran it as exec dbo.dw_column_profile
i wasn't leaving off the schema :-)

Then perhaps something inside the procedure doesn't use the schema prefix.

4:42 PM
must be something in the procedure. I'll check it. thanks!

Anyway once you figure out the user:
ALTER USER username WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = dbo;

Q: Closed topic, leads to non-existant topic

JBuraceThis question: unloading data from oracle dbf files Was closed as a duplicate. I went to find out the original question (and answer): http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/43637/restore-oracle-database-from-dbf-files And received a "Page not found"?

^^^ already answered

@AaronBertrand I don't have those permissions :-)

Ok, well someone must...

4:52 PM
yeah, their knowledgeable dba is out right now. they have a brand new dba who doesn't know anything yet. I'm trying to work through this for him and tell him what to do if I can't do it myself.

@mmarie look through the code for dumb things like [database]..[object] (per @AaronBertrand 's recommendation)

There is a lot of IF OBJECT_ID('tempdb..#LimitTest') IS NOT NULL
DROP TABLE #LimitTest;
woudl that do it?
(I didn't write it)
most of the stored procedure is temp tables and sp_executesql calls for dynamic sql
it's a data profiling stored procedure that you feed a schema and you examine all the tables in the schema
the only thing that didn't have a schema defined when it was created or referenced is a sequence that I added.
how come when i do
select schema_name() on the dev box it returns dbo rather than null?

@mmarie right. so have you asked the new dba what your default schema is for your prod user?

I will when i figure out how I actually have access to the database :-)

@mmarie for right now, ask the dba ... what's my default schema? can you please set it to dbo?

5:07 PM
I wonder if you also need permission to view schemas and schema information.

he doesn't do any altering without permission from the senior dba. I have to wait until he comes back.
no i can select it just fine

@mmarie does he do any looking without the sr. dba?

haha, i dunno. this is the first time i have met him. his response to most things is he'll run it by the sr. dba
i think this is his very first dba job and he just doesn't want to mess anything up

@mmarie tell him to suck it up. what happens if there's a disaster or something? "sorry, cant restore backups without the sr. dba telling me to do it."

haha

5:10 PM
I'm guessing he can't suck it up unless he gets authorization from the Sr. DBA

@swasheck I think this is his 3rd week on the job.

he's "Goose" to my "Mav"

I don't know him. this is just a client site i have been at a couple of days a week.

@mmarie You're right, my bad, I've never used it that way before. Anyway the problem is still the same - the user doesn't have a default schema, and SQL Server is trying to find it because of some unqualified references somewhere.

@AaronBertrand yep. tempdb..#objectname ... it's her user which (probably) doesnt have a default schema and the newguy dba wont check it for her

5:12 PM
Sorry, we can't solve politics problems here

prozactly

@AaronBertrand Haha, i know. I'm just trying to figure out how far i can get with my limited permissions
thanks for the help, guys

@mmarie not very far, sorry. That's why the permissions are there.

@mmarie what a nincompoop. so he can promo to prod without authorization, but he can't check your default schema? wtfe. take the $$ and run.

@swasheck More like Sundown

5:14 PM
@billinkc nah. cougar. that's who he is. he may be good, but he's skeered.

@swasheck he got permission from the other dba before pushing ot prod.
Actually, he didn't know how because it's on a cluster and he didn't know which one is write vs read only

@mmarie uhhhhh, what? is this an availability group?

@mmarie um, it's a clustered instance of SQL Server? He shouldn't care that it's a cluster because he shouldn't be connecting to physical node, he should be connecting to the virtual server name. In a clustered instance there isn't one that's write and one that's read only. There is one instance that lives on one of the nodes - the other nodes are standby and aren't running SQL Server at all until there is a failover.
Stack Overflow, please stop sending us your </facepalm> users
@ZoKu And like I said, this assumes you can control - forever - that this procedure will never change and that it will always be the only way you ever run an update against this table. That's not a very safe assumption. If this is school work, wasn't any of this material covered? — Aaron Bertrand ♦ 1 min ago

5:30 PM
@AaronBertrand yeah. i'm wondering if he somehow got confused with AGs and readable secondaries (even still, how he's connecting would be an issue).

This morning we upgraded to 50/50 (what do we care, Nicole's work pays our bill). Only our actual up/down speeds went DOWN instead of up.
Not cool, Verizon, not cool
Also my conversation with crotchety is officially over

Because... I poke bears

@AaronBertrand details ?

@billinkc how did your guest outperform the host on upload? or were they two separate tests?

@Kermit he said "this conversation is over"

5:38 PM
@swasheck Two separate tests.

i was hoping there would be some more juicy details

@AaronBertrand crotchety?

I find it strange that my upload is consistent in that range buy download varies

@Kermit there will be at some point. Debating whether I should send the thread to Max's thing

@Lamak Cantankerous. Aka, you

5:39 PM
@billinkc probably fighting a lot more people on your block for download traffic than upload

oh, that guy

@AaronBertrand max's thing?

wait. i thought that it was @AaronBertrand who was claiming that he was crotchety, not that the other guy was the crotchety

@billinkc you need to get over me, dude ;-)

i'm all fouled up

Q: Looking for sql server tool with schema sync

SexyMFI am looking for free sql server tool with the following features. Visual schema management for adding tables and fields. Sync schema with other schema and build upgrade script. Simple query editor. Free tool will be best, if you know one. I am using sql server express 2012. Thanks

You are fast.
I usually know when you start up "mod-ing", if I have flags not processed by our British mod, and I see them gone.

@AaronBertrand needs a VtC reason of "Clearly haven't searched the Goog"

(no offence to the other 2 American mods, they are in a more western timezone)

ha ha like Connecticut :-)

any idea if there is a SQL Server 2000 equivalent of sys.traces?
(speaking of not Googling first!)
is there even a default trace in 2000?

@AaronBertrand Oops. My geography limits are revealed.

@AaronBertrand It's sooo far West of Boston. :)

6:45 PM
@MaxVernon no, that was introduced in 2005. In 2000 you need to look at fn_trace_getinfo
(but you won't find a default trace there)

@AaronBertrand thanks.

e.g. SELECT * FROM ::fn_trace_getinfo(default);

cool
@AaronBertrand any way to get filegrowth events out-of-the box on 2000?

@MaxVernon whats mvct.com ?

@MaxVernon not without starting a trace first, no
@Kermit can he e-mail you anywhere? I know you are very protective of your e-mail address. I suggested you get a different account (like kermit_loves_boys@gmail) but Max is suggesting setting one up for you.
@MaxVernon why the hell are you troubleshooting 2000 - can I serenade you with "Let it go" from Frozen?

6:51 PM
@AaronBertrand @MaxVernon someone wants to e-mail me? (teary eyed)

7:04 PM
hey @AaronBertrand you should sign up for this

@Kermit my own domain, hosted by me.
@AaronBertrand lololol. I cannot believe we still have many 2000 instances. and a great many more 2005/2008/2008R2. I think we have 1 2012 instance so far.

So don't say I never give you folks anything.
