A: How to enforce referential integrity on Single Table Inheritance?

ErikEIt's actually quite simple. The problem is that your User and Team tables are the ones that should have a supertype table (such as Party), not the Playlist tables. As you've pointed out, doing your "table inheritance" on playlists comes with penalties when trying to figure out what to delete. A...

of all the beers they bring to you from the states, it looks like they have quite a few Goose Island. That's not craft beer.
Erik, have you played Nurikabe?

@ErickRobertson I haven't, but looking it up now, it reminds me of Minesweeper

@ErikE Oh, it's far more interesting. If you're a puzzle fan, you should enjoy it.

I do play go, some. And am interested in writing software to play go.

oh, that reminds me, my new book is here! the first one I've ordered on amazon that prompted me to rent textbooks and save 80% :)

2:51 AM
@ErickRobertson It also reminds me a little bit of Flow

the white and black squares play slightly differently, though, and it makes for a really fun combination

I'm finding it somewhat easy. :)
Though that may be because I found an easy puzzle (working on 20x20)

(granted the ones I write are as self-documenting as possible, but still, even after adding code, comments, and docs, test scripts are longer)

@ChrisTravers I did a simple data quality framework the other day and the test cases for that were much larger than the code base.

You should always give the columns list regardless. But yes, a.* should work, and you could as well try it yourself... — dezso 23 secs ago

@dezso he is something something else though

@ypercube what, what?

if he can alias a.* AS x*

ah yes, that won't work

so a.id, a.name are aliases as xid, xname

10:39 AM
I'm curious as to why it's not an option to just use regular table aliases

@SimonRigharts because then he has to type all column names, I guess

@SimonRigharts They have columns with same names in different tables and they are lazy to alias every column with a different name.

@dezso Such typing. Very painful.
(If you don't get the reference that's probably for the best...)

@SimonRigharts I think I don't...

@SimonRigharts reference?

@ypercube It's a meme going around the internet (about a shiba inu dog) that inspired, basically, people to talk like they had a poor grasp of English.
Like all such retarded things, it gained traction through Reddit.
(The only reason I know of it is because one of my coworkers relentlessly posts photoshopped images related to that meme...)

Ah thnx.

@ypercube Worth a DV, but not quite spam IMHO - at least not yet. If the same account starts posting the same thing on different questions, that would be different.

Yeah, it doesn't actually push it like the previous spam links..

@ypercube I've destroyed the user (I had a little more to go on, enough to make me pretty sure the account was set up just to spam)
It was good to meet you yesterday @ypercube, hope you enjoyed the drinkies :)

@JackDouglas I did, yeah. Nice to meet you all.

@Marian Crikey, so it seems :)

@PaulWhite I do think it's not our Jack, though.. He wouldn't do that. He'd smooth talk any spammer to donate his earnings for SaveElefants or something..
Maybe they switched him with a different one yesterday evening at their party? :)

A: View scripts ran by a specific user?

Matan YungmanIn order to achieve it, you'll need to capture this information at run time using DMV's or Extended Events.

@JackDouglas not really.
(and btw, that guy's a DBA at MS :)

Is it anything like an answer?

oops, my mistake

Iif it's just wrong or poor I'll DV and decline the flag

it is an answer
Just a very short (Denny's style) one.

If anyone fancies improving it, please be my guest: it's all Greek to me...
Maybe all it needs is a bit of cut'n'paste from some docs somewhere

I would say that I was working through the SO flag queue this morning

@bluefeet how are you feeling about the SO election?

@JackDouglas well I've had a lot of support in the primary but we will see if people vote in the election :)

I don't know whether to wish you luck or to hope for your sake that you don't get elected ;)
DBA is a cushy job compared to SO...

@Marian Lies. But that was a very nice video put together by our VP of Events, Doug Lane.

@MikeFal No lies, none! You were absolutely natural on camera.
Was waiting for some cough "mongo" blurb..but still, was good enough :-).

@JackDouglas haha, thanks :)

@Marian Heh, being natural on camera does not make one a rockstar. And I'm not going to mention mogno on a SQL Server User Group promo vid. :)

@MikeFal why? you could say: come to our SQL Server User Group meeting, or you'll look like "them" :D.

@JackDouglas If I recall it's the part that has fun. ;)

@Zane @AaronBertrand has kids and he's buckets of fun

3:22 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO My roommates have a 4 year old. My favorite thing to do when their kid is being a pain I ask them. "Hey do you know what I'm going to do?" They ask "What?" and I say "whatever the fu** I want." :)

to export a table data to csv format in sql-server 2008 I have read this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14212641/export-table-from-database-to-csv-file
but my table have 4 million of records, in fact I'm doing that, but I think there should be another way to do that,
my `select * from table` is for 10 min and only showing 500 k record

@Zane i don't follow

Is something else hitting this table.
@FreshPrinceOfSO Hmm I was hoping that would translate to type but it appears not to have.

@FreshPrinceOfSO he can do whatever he wants because he's single and doesn't have kids

heh I am now starting to regret my decision to write a little database-centered programming framework :-P

3:25 PM
@ChrisTravers how come?
good to see your beard :)

@Lamak Bingo!

@JackDouglas It's still "little" in terms of number of lines of code (maybe 500 lines of code plus twice that in docs) but it is growing in complexity and scope rather quickly

I can continue to live my life as shallowly as I wish :)

ahhhh

@EmilioGort why can't you use the import/export wizard?, or SSIS?

3:26 PM
@Lamak ah

@Lamak I try but maybe I did something wrong, right click on DB, task, export data, but there I didnt find any option to csv.

@JackDouglas I am looking at now writing a framework for Perl objects that automatically serialize themselves to PostgreSQL tuple notation as complex types.

@EmilioGort What you want to select is flat file.
This then gives you a number of ways to can seperate the data.

yes, the whole table to csv

@EmilioGort when choosing the destination, choose flat file

3:29 PM
Keep in mind these could have attributes that are arrays of other complex types.

ok, thanks,,,let me try

@EmilioGort Once you've picked flat file choose comma separated and bam export.

@EmilioGort A flat file is a flat file is a flat file. Whether use tab delimitation, comma separation, or whatever it's still always considered a flat file.
@AaronBertrand did you see the women's hockey game yesterday?

Q: SQL to Find records where result is in range between two columns, but check multiple rows

aohm1989I'm working with two datasets, one is a more detailed view of clock punch activity, and another is a summation of entire "shifts" that these clock punches make up. What we are trying to accomplish, is to return a record where the PAYCODEID is equal to '7' or '8' (these are meal break codes), and ...

This seems stupid.
I don't follow his clock event things.

Thanks @zane, but I had an unexpected problem, In SQL Server Express, Web, or Workgroup, you can run the package that the Import and Export Wizard creates, but cannot save it

3:42 PM
@EmilioGort well, there goes a requirement that you didn't tell us about. Nothing about saving the SSIS package
but really, create a package to export data from a table to a flat file should be a breeze.

@EmilioGort You can just create an SSIS package it should be incredibly simple.
Create package. Add Data source. Create data flow task. OLEDB source/ Your Query. Flat File Destination. Bam done!

I don't think that version of SQL Server includes SSIS

yes I did

@Gonsalu what version?

SQL Server Express, Web, or Workgroup

3:45 PM
@Gonsalu If he can run the export wizard than he should have access to BIDS.
Let me see.

I can run the package but no save it
it's really faster 30 seconds an saving 1,5 million

@ChrisTravers does pg do any conversion by default?

A: Is business intelligence development studio available in express editions?

user756519As per the below MSDN link, Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) is available in SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with Advanced Services. Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2008 R2 - Development Tools You can download the Express with Advanced Services from the below link. No...

That's of course this is using 2008R2

in the middle of the page it mentions SSIS
it's only available on Standard Edition up

@Gonsalu yeah but if you can get express you can get express with Advanced Services which does come with BIDS.

3:50 PM
@Zane but it seems it's just to create reports

it would be really cool if they added it, though
@EmilioGort, maybe you could BCP to export the data?

@Gonsalu I think that's what he was doing at first

sorry what is BCP
let me say I'm not an expert in db

google it

@EmilioGort, no worries, we'll help as we can

@FreshPrinceOfSO google.com/…

@EmilioGort well, the answer of the question you posted presents a solution using bcp

Abdalwhab BakheetI want to: Export table from sql server database to a comma delimited csv file without using sql Server import export wizard I want to do it using a query because I want to use the query in automation Is it possible? I searched for that and didn't find a good answer

i'm reading your link

@Lamak He was it was going slow for unknown reasons.

shoudnt be a big deal write something in c#,

@Gonsalu thanks, but he posted that link

@Lamak that is what I was doing at first

@EmilioGort If that's in your skill set that I would recommend going that route.

@Lamak heh. Sorry, thought it was a different one

no worries, I got confused when he asked what was bcp

let me ask the export data is taking the same time that the query to export to csv'
is it the same process them?

I'm confused, what do you mean the export data is taking the same time as the query?
Have you tried "bcp "SELECT * FROM Database.dbo.Table" queryout C:\Test.csv -c -t, -T -S .\SQLEXPRESS"?

4:15 PM
@Gonsalu here it's what I tried so far

@JackDouglas well, you could use row/array constructors, but in the contexts I am looking at, probably not very helpful.
so I am effectively having to handle it all myself.

@ErikE A couple of theories: (1) "It's actually quite simple" is a phrase I use sometimes too, but it can be seen as condescending. (2) The link to more information is sometimes considered terse (and what if that question or any of its answers get deleted). (3) both you and JDeveloper got a down-vote at the same time.
Coincidence: they are the only two answers with no code in them. I'm not going to point out who else involved with that question was online in the same time frame, but that's something you could figure out if you were curious.

anyway off to sleep I think

Of course being online or showing activity in the same time frame is a very weak indicator, and if they're not going to explain why, it doesn't really matter. Just makes it a bit easier to jump to the "down-voting competing answers" conclusion. Which is only slightly better than wondering needlessly about what might be wrong with your answer. Chances are, if your history is any indication, it's nothing.

@Zane is that a win or a loss?

4:27 PM
@swasheck I don't really like working from home. I'm far less productive.

fair enough
last night proved to me that i'm incompetent enough IN the office

@Zane uh, yeah

@swasheck We all have those days my friend.
@AaronBertrand I am bummed. I thought we finally had you.

apparently there's another hockey game today.

@EmilioGort Try to make sure you're using Management Studio Express 2012 SP1 (which is fully functional, not crippled like previous versions, including 2012 RTM). microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35579

4:31 PM
@Zane give up two goals in the final 3 minutes ... already fatigued ... that's crushing

@Zane That was a collapse of epic proportions. They kind of sat back in the third and let them tie it up. Then they were nuts-o at the beginning of overtime - should have scored three or four goals if that were possible. Our streak is intact.

so had the US team really been warned about slashing? because i felt like that was a (correct but) soft call. i thought i heard the commentator say something like that but we were at a pub

Then again I thought we had you in 2002 as well.

@swasheck yeah, I am already feeling a little cough under cough the weather

@AaronBertrand I'm trying to find a place I can listen to it online.
I'm bummed I can't watch it.

4:34 PM
@AaronBertrand when does Russia play next?

@swasheck This isn't a rule they wouldn't have already known about. You can't slash the goalie.

/endlol

@swasheck 2018
@Zane get NBC Live Extra on your phone

@AaronBertrand psh. still a bit soft

@AaronBertrand Can't don't have cable TV.

4:34 PM
@swasheck how about the "cross-check" that should have been a penalty shot?

They ask for a cable TV subscription.

@swasheck bad calls go both ways, man

@AaronBertrand yeah. i know

@AaronBertrand Especially in Olympic Hockey. International sports have garbage refs.

@Zane they certainly do. I hope it isn't a factor today.

4:36 PM
@AaronBertrand Russia's not playing today so I doubt it will be one sided.

@Zane Still hate to see bad calls in either direction. When we're the victim it sucks, when we're not it's an excuse and blame game
(Even when they balance them out. We should be playing by the rules, not how the refs feel like calling this specific game.)

None of the games I've seen have been too terrible. I like our chances team USA has been playing as a cohesive unit more than any other team IMO.

I've quit sports leagues for that shit - especially volleyball. It's unbelievably frustrating when the exact same play gets called differently from week to week.
@Zane I agree, USA is playing better than they did in the last Olympics, and that came down to the wire.
I went into that game thinking we had you easy, but not so.

@AaronBertrand this is my opinion as well

@AaronBertrand Truth. However you can't be 100% accurate all the time. I've refed volley ball for a few years. Harder than I had originally anticipated.

4:39 PM
Today I'm far less confident, this really could go either way. Sucks it's a semi-final and not a final.

@AaronBertrand I agree.

@Zane well not even just the refs. When a setter doubles he knows and should call it himself. In a rec league.
With player refs, not real/paid refs

I think they set up the initial bracket to assure both games wouldn't end up being USA vs Canada.
The Fins are strong this year but I still think these are the two best teams hands down.

@Zane uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

@Zane no that was totally based on round robin results
If Russia had beat USA it would have been completely different
Fins will play for Bronze tomorrow

4:42 PM
I love womens hockey because it's still all high school and college kids.
Oh wow I didn't see they lost to Sweden.

@Zane yeah while I like to see the highest possible level at the Olympics, it sucks that some countries have absolutely no chance. Taking out the pros will help some countries compete better (but obviously not all).

I remember a girl from my gym class in 2002 stoped playing floor hockey as she was off to train for the olympics. I couldn't believe it.

Felt bad for Chara. He was so freaking proud to carry his flag at the opening ceremonies. Then his team sucked it up around him.

I know Darwitz was a beast but I wasn't expecting that.

@EmilioGort there's no sensitive information there i hope?

4:45 PM
@AaronBertrand Yeah total bummer.
Which was good for me as we ended up winning the floor hockey championship without her there to score on me. ;)

@AaronBertrand @Zane i'll be interested to see how the US handles Canada's forecheck. i remember watching that in their first game and they were really, really aggressive with that

I'm going to get my old man's comcast e-mail. Hopefully I won't run out of data. I must see this hockey game.
Argh! I should have worked from home.

@AaronBertrand I was really really good. I just can't skate well. It just doesn't click.
I didn't get into it early enough as we were far too poor.
Argh! Why do I need cable to watch something that's being broadcast locally? Fuuuuuu**!

5:00 PM
People get all uppity about cutting the cord. Then there's something they can't watch. Sorry, /nosympathy :-)

@AaronBertrand From the guy who gets free cable... :)

@Zane I paid for plenty of cable before my wife got this job. It's just a perk, not the reason I have cable. :-)

@AaronBertrand Essentially there are 4 events in a given year that I want to watch that require cable. Not worth the asking price.

@AaronBertrand kitten? you're a big kitten

Companies are finally starting to come around Fox has an XboxOne app that lets me watch any of their programming with normal ads online. I'm not sure why NBC won't let me watch a show they are broadcasting locally for free.

5:04 PM
@Zane NBC is greedy
@Zane I also think they paid dearly for the Olympics rights

@AaronBertrand Well now they aren't getting advertising revenue from my viewership.

@Zane that's ok, I'll watch the commercials for you. :-)

@JackDouglas not as far back as I can go

@AaronBertrand No clue don't care. Must find stream. I don't care about LeBron and Arod. There is a live event going on with no coverage.

@Zane NBC probably went all out to ensure that nobody else would be providing coverage.
@Zane could probably give you access to my SlingBox if you're really desperate, but I'm sure you can find a restaurant or something with the game on

@AaronBertrand I might have to go home.

@Zane that's ok. I'm sure productivity in North America has reached an absolute low for the year so far.
Interesting, NBC is already advertising the next Super Bowl

@AaronBertrand It will be lower when March Madness starts
