Q: Swap column names in SQL

UZIERI have a query where my COUNTRY_VISITED shows CONTINENTS and the other way around and I want to swap it but keep both columns? I don't want to add the extra column CONTINENTS to the tables. CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW V_HOLIDAYS AS SELECT CODE_OF_HOLIDAY, DESCRIPTION, COUNTRY_VISITED ...

It's unclear
it gets more unclear when you read the code, which is a bad sign

Q: What's the best way to schedule a SSIS package

Nadeem_MKI have got to run a SSIS package [.net 2008 framework] which would retrieve a report from my database once every week. @ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I doubt it, but thanks for the thought. I haven't booked flights at this stage, so things could change I guess, but right now no plans to stop off in the UK.

Thank you blue footed diamond

@billinkc Ouch! Though, if I could choose, I think I'd be Abby Lockhart. Certainly not Benton - I found him intensely annoying. (And yes I have watched every single ER episode.)

@billinkc I can be helpful... sometimes
@PaulWhite I've watched them all as well

@swasheck Sad to hear. Best wishes to all.
@bluefeet I started in the middle, watched to the end, then got the earlier episodes on DVD (rental) so bit of a weird way, but technically correct that I've seen them all.

3:10 PM
No, really
> I have a table with some columns

The weird would be a table with no columns.
Although technically, such a thing exists in the RM. Just not in SQL.

@PaulWhite So I now invoke the magic words: Free alcohol

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells :)

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells as in "Free Willy"?

3:12 PM
@ypercube Now, to someone from New Zealand that doesn't mean what you think it means.
WILLY

Willy is slang for the penis.

I guess I better stop giving people wet willies then

I was also told that offering mine for free was overvaluing it

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells That seems to be happening more and more of late (words meaning different things I mean). I have been struggling to follow much of Twitter for the past several weeks. Perhaps it is a passing phenomenon. Perhaps it is related to a recent bump on the head. Perhaps I don't know when to stop typing or say things only in my head...

The implanted chip is healing nicely, based on the pictures I've been able to gather

@PaulWhite you actually read through all of that?

3:18 PM
@swasheck Of course. The Heap is my social life.

@bluefeet A pro/con question still isn't on topic for SO, correct?

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I've heard it here, too.

@swasheck What's wrong with your sis-in-law?

@billinkc correct, those are typically too broad or too opinion based

@swasheck Best of luck.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells sounds delightful, but why would one leave lisbon in the first place?
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells thanks.

@swasheck In order to enjoy our scintillating conversation and free grog of course.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Thanks. It is something I will seriously think about when booking. Intended route is PPQ-AKL-LAX-LHR-LIS on Air NZ for the long bits then BA/TAP for the short hop.

3:25 PM
@swasheck Clearly you've never been to Greater-Lower-Peckashire-in-surrey

@PaulWhite I just flew Emirates to Indonesia and back (coincidentally to visit somebody with an infection in their brain tissue). They were quite comfortable. Easyjet would be fine for a short hop to Lisbon.

Yo yo yo!

@PaulWhite i took one of those stupid facebook quizzes and it turns out that the country in which i should live is NZ
@billinkc clearly

Anyone having issues getting to KB articles? I can't even get support.microsoft.com to just load.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells green fog?

3:30 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Yes I really don't care much about the short hop. The long bit I am keen to do on NZ because I enjoy their business class (and loyalty points). I am not against trying other airlines in principle, but the risk would be high on such an epic.

@ShawnMelton probably migrating to Azure

@swasheck I could have told you that without you needing to waste cycles/cells on FB :)

@ShawnMelton try changing it from support. to support2.

Ah, finally getting "The service is unavailable."

(I have the same problem with support. but support2. loads immediately)

3:31 PM
To continue your analogy, you walk into an automotive repair shop and ask what is the better fruit: apple or orange? The mechanics might have opinion on which is better but they cannot provide an authoritative answer. They then point out that asking them fruit related questions is an incorrect usage of their service. — billinkc 25 secs ago

Why is that, support2 their backup?

so i'm walking out of my seattle hotel with my wife, and this dude in black pants and a black leather jacket is just staring at me, following me. i notice him and think, "what's going on?" i thought the cia was after me, or something. so we're walking down the steps and cia-man says, "seth washeck?" now i'm for sure going to get arrested or something in front my my wife. "seth washeck? mikael eriksson (points to himself)." whew. dodged a bullet.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Ok I'll see what I can work in. If it happens, it'll be on the way back to NZ.

commence awkward 35 seconds of conversation because a) i'm awkward, b) the wife and i were arguing about where to go for dinner. sorry for the awkward, @MikaelEriksson

@swasheck No worries, sorry for being in "all blacks" and agency like ;)

@swasheck was this the same night we ran into you going to dinner? (sushi night)

And BTW, I don't look half as scary as the avatar.

3:40 PM
@MikaelEriksson you have no reason to apologize

@PaulWhite If you need to crash overnight I have a folding sofa bed that's fairly comfy. The shindig typically starts at 7:30 in Richmond, which is close enough to Heathrow to get there by taxi. IIRC the flights via LA get to Heathrow at around 4 in the aftenoon.

@MikaelEriksson no. he doesnt. except when he's the man in black. :)
@mmarie no. this was our first night there (sunday, i believe)

oh, i was going to say that you didn't seem awkward when we saw you, but it was a different night so it could have been awkward.
Also, your wife is very pretty

she's beautiful --- and also quite attractive on the outside.

Such a smoothie

3:43 PM
@PaulWhite If you're going on the way back then you would have to stay overnight as the flights leave at 15:30 as far as I can tell. If you can get from Portugal to london in time for the shindig you're welcome to crash at my digs.

that's it. i'm done for the year.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Thanks! I would definitely do an overnight.

3:49 PM
@ypercube is very close to 20K

@bluefeet I like the design. The question, I don't.
Why would you give your students that are learning databases, questions about char splitting?

That's the only important problem to solve. Store everything in a delimited field and presto, webscale

@PaulWhite Get me some advance warning about the dates and I'll organise a drinkies.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I will. Most likely 18th May (a Monday!) but that could well change.

@PaulWhite I'll pencil that in. Tell me once you've confirmed that.

AlwaysOn AG for the VDI databases used in VMware...isn't that a bit excessive just for those databases?
I don't know what all those DBs are for other than user interface for things like stats and performance stuff.

@ShawnMelton what happens to VMware if those databases are unavailable? Say, goes suspect, taken offline, etc.?
Maybe VCenter doesn't deal with that scenario very well. HA is not always about uptime for the end user. :-)

true

@AaronBertrand your server admins (esp. vmware) should know CLI anyway, but your point is well-taken

@swasheck well I didn't just mean the stuff your server admins are doing, but the management VMware itself is doing

I am not aware of anything in those databases that is going to cause VMWare itself to crash (i.e. guest VMs start crashing). I understood they were just management/monitor databases.

5:10 PM
ah. i'm not particularly current on my vmware architecture but my impression was that it's "just" performance metrics storage and stuff to facilitate vCenter UI that's stored in the sql server database. but still, it's nice to have the lights on all of your tools

It just seems excessive to have to go through all the setup of AlwaysOn AGs and the mishaps that can happen by not doing it correctly. I would favor log shipping or just basic mirroring right off.

@ShawnMelton It would be easy to test what happens if you alter the db to offline temporarily. Maybe it is worth the effort. Hard to know what dependencies exist.

better safe than sorry - especially if you can afford the minimal storage that it requires

Log shipping isn't really HA (e.g. no automatic failover). And I doubt you could convince anyone that mirroring is a top play since it's deprecated.

I guess it is client's final decision to spend the money on Enterprise licensing.

5:14 PM
Wouldn't you need that for sync/auto failover with mirroring too?

is that the only thing in any AG anywhere?

@swasheck This would be their first AG on their network to date.

If all you need is DR and not HA then perhaps log shipping is fine. But again, hard for us to know the requirements, why they're requirements, and whether HA really is required for any of VMware's mechanics
@ShawnMelton have you asked them why they think they need AG for this?

^^^^

@AaronBertrand About to. I have one other client that just put their VMWare databases on a shared cluster and they do fine.

5:17 PM
Warm it up Shawn. I'm about to. Warm it up Shawn. Cuz that's what I was born to do.
@ShawnMelton were you at PASS Summit last month?

@swasheck No but watched what I could from PassTV

ah
@AaronBertrand is the SQL Sentry Performance Advisor Timestamp data point UTC?
(off the top of your head, dont go doing crazy research)

@swasheck I have a Powershell script for that. ;)

@swasheck yes should be - there are functions to convert to and from the timestamp to a real date/time value, pretty sure it's all UTC.

Mike Fal will make you JUMP JUMP
@AaronBertrand yeah. found that function - but just noticed that i've got data points from 5pm today so i assumed it was either UTC or a TZ issue on the server :D

Ozar has a provocative post today: ozar.me/2014/12/not-learning-analytics

> ETL means boring meetings.
bahahahahahahahahahah
(true)

If only. Most of my ETL involves: ummm yeah, we don't have documentation, those people have retired so can you just figure it out and tell us how our data (and business) works

> And at the same time the analytics boom is happening, there is a concurrent trend of not wanting to spend any money on ETL (one vendor even promises ‘no more ETL’) or data warehousing. In my personal experience with a few projects, this translates into the same expensive and confusing data cleansing tasks being redone for each project, and the project ending with clients asking why it takes $100k to build a report.
BRILLIANT

@billinkc How do you manage to deal with nonsense data like that?

@billinkc The @COTW data analysis creed: Where there's muck there's brass.
Sounds best when spoken in a broad Yorkshire accent.
@James It's very tedious and time consuming and pays quite well.

5:39 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Yep I'm not sure about the 'run by easily replaceable staff' part of Brent's post. People I've met who can work past these data quality issues and salvage the client's sunk costs are in high demand and have a daily rate to match.

mysql + python is making me want to stab my computer

@majnemɪzdæn mysql ok. python why?

@ypercube using pythonanywhere

7:17 PM
I haven't used that we use only Python where I work now.
with Postgres

@Zane I did debate how early I would bring that up, but subsequent changes to the database really are second tier compared to server level things when there have been no changes to the database.

How many questions could be summarized as: I copy and paste error message but I no read it
> There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure
And yet, that's the only error row they post

Today is not my day for getting quality interaction on SE sites

@billinkc I have a one-off python flask app
@billinkc I was a L/MAMP stack guy, never learned much more
so hosting python apps eludes me

@majnemɪzdæn they should rethink the "Anywhere" on the name

@billinkc PA made it easy

@majnemɪzdæn I see postgres in their tools: pythonanywhere.com/batteries_included

7:38 PM
@ypercube yes, but it is coming soon
not actually available once you become a paying customer
:/

that sucks

That's kind of bullshit.

Postgres was "high on their list" two years ago, and they "are working on it", this June.

@majnemɪzdæn that's the problem with things that "make it easy" - they make it easy by not handling any of the hard stuff, not scaling, and only covering lowest common denominator

7:46 PM
@AaronBertrand that's....a pretty accurate description

EF/CodeFirst, for example, is great for pumping out a quick prototype. Try to get it to scale though, or handle even the most basic extensions to very core ORM models
sigh
Which would be why I put it as a comment. ;) (with hopes that he'd go do some googling and reading) — Joishi Bodio 4 mins ago

@AaronBertrand Someone's trying to be cute and it's not working.
@AaronBertrand I'm more annoyed that they advertise Postgre as a feature and then if you buy it it's under coming soon. That's hardcore bs right there.
You can't advertise features that will exist in the future as features you have now.

8:12 PM
@AaronBertrand yeah, but for someone like me who remembers a time when 'full stack' meant MAMP, and when all I need to do is run a one-off web app that is obsolete in two weeks and only has 5 users...
not sure what better solutions exist
I had it running using sqlite but now the database is locked and there is a journal file so it is in an inconsistent state
and I'm not even sure how I'm going to go about repairing and unlocking it

See, it's sad that he smeared his legacy to the point that you don't even know which team he was playing for while embroiled in some off-field shenanigans
I don't think any of the things he did post-GB were worth what he sacrificed by not retiring a one-franchise QB.

@AaronBertrand yeah
@AaronBertrand what's next? Chris Osgood laces up the skates at forward for the Hershey Bears?

@Zane sure, I'm just saying McNabb might not have been the best available a year earlier.

Q: Create multiple rows in table from existing rows?

worker17With SQL, I have a table with key made of 1st three columns. All columns are small int values. There are a total of 21 columns per row. I want to insert 80 new keys for every existing key. For example, first key is 1 201 0. I want to now update the table to also have keys 1 201 1, 1 201 2, 1...

ugh.
I changed the configuration file per Microsoft: <ServerName>'.'</ServerName> to named instance and it worked. Permissions - I granted access to SSIS in component services and restarted SSIS per Microsoft. When the developer attempts to connect through object explorer and selects Integration Services There is NO SSIS instance to select; however, I can see it when I try from my client? I don't think I've ever used that. Agent jobs and file system on pre project deployment models.

agent jobs and sql based deployments for me but yeah, you get no benefit from using that thing and only pain. Can only run in 32 bit mode, doesn't work for multi-instances, etc, etc

JSheanHas anyone loaded XML data from SQL Server to a MarkLogic document store? This would be preferable to dumping XML to file system and then using mlcp. Maybe with SSIS?

@billinkc, in SSIS projects with a lot of packages (>100), would you keep it in a single project or try to split it in multiple projects?

@Gonsalu I personally try to move them into smaller logical groups if I can. This way it's less likely for developers to be working over each other in their SSIS project.

thanks, y'all

generally speaking, I'd have my project contain as many packages as were required to solve the business problem and no more

@billinkc during lunch, @MikeFal got an email about not receiving personal packages at the office

thus, if it takes 150 packages to make @MikeFal get in trouble, then that's the solution I'm going with

haha

I don't want your package.

s. I'm like a bad character from hentai

you went there, didnt you

I'm using project deployment model and don't want to give up the sweet, sweet execution ID on a single master package call

I live there

Better than treacle pr0n. Way too sticky

Every SSIS developer get's into it for the "Package" jokes.

but at the same time, makes working with source control a pain in the ass :(

somehow this conversation made me think of this guy
Richard "Dick" Trickle (October 27, 1941 – May 16, 2013) was an American race car driver. He raced for decades around the short tracks of Wisconsin, winning many championships along the way. Trickle competed in the ASA, ARTGO, ARCA, All Pro, IMCA, NASCAR, and USAC. In more than an estimated 2,200 races, Trickle logged one million laps and is believed to have won over 1,200 feature races. He was billed as the winningest short track driver in history. Trickle's career highlights include racing to 67 wins in 1972, winning seven ARTGO Championships in nine years between 1979 to 1987, winning back to...

Lets see where should I focus my career. Oh SSIS lets me routinely say "I'm deploying my package" I'll go with that please.

I CANT FIND MY PACKAGE IN YOUR MSDB!! DID YOU PUT IT IN THE FILESYSTEM WHERE THE VIRUSES LIVE?

@swasheck Come back to my trailer and I'll introduce you to logging

That's a you problem.

(in all honesty, most of them are a problem with @billinkc)

I will say that Biml has gotten me back into trying new approaches for SSIS stuff, which has lead to happier days. Even if I'm solving the "same" problem, it's nice to have a new approach toward doing so

Time to bike it back to the bar!

What? More work? Okay

Work is dumb and I don't want to do anymore so I'm going home!
@billinkc why don't you have these points?

Q: Getting new and updated data with an archive column

MetaphorI am trying to optimize an SSIS package that retrieves data from a very large transaction table that gets millions of new records daily. The data is being collected from several hundred field servers where SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition is installed. CDC, therefore cannot be used as it is an En...

Some folks are afraid of the demons of doing something different, which is why I posted as comment and not an answer. See whether they were interested in such an approach.
The srutzky person took it and ran with it. Not entirely the direction I'd have gone but my enthusiasm for answering that users questions is rather low

@Zane I want to upvote @srutzky's answer but the "fields" and "records" are holding me.

Click the edit button, you have the technology

@ypercube I didn't read the answer since going home sounds like more fun.
Especially with a bar trip on the way.

i'm going to the bar in my garage

@swasheck Bar in my neighborhood does a different infusion on one of their beers every tuesday.
It's quite lovely.

i'm just drinking from the spout in the kegerator ... because i'm that lonel|awesome

Nice! I want of those but don't want to pay the upfront cost. Anyway see you all later.

@swasheck Imagine that I texted you some dick pictures to keep you entertained
And then a flood of photos of Richard Nixon, Dick Grayson, etc come rolling in
It amuses me, but I'm too lazy for the execution
