Q: Minecraft, without the death?

t-martI think Minecraft is fun for its progression. First you start with a plain world that you sculpt, mine and craft to your choosing or (with mods for example) you start with a system that's small, tedious, or inefficient that you upgrade to be large scale and fast. It's this "building up" that I l...

What use does armor have if you can't be hurt anyway?

He is talking about an armour giving you invincibility, not about wearing an armour once he is already invincible.

@Shunwoo yup, but he wants a way to become invincible. So what good does your armor do you once you are invincible? because the only use of armor is reducing damage.

That's a good point Arperum, but I meant that I'd still want to craft my own armor for aesthetics or for mechanics related to a mod: Some mods' armor does more than just protect.

@Shunwoo I didn't see the reason why it couldn't be an armor, because armor would be useless, now that I know armor is still wanted for aestetics, I can understand why.
Would keeping your inventory on death be enough? In that case: there is a gamerule for that. So you can still die, but the only consequense for death is that you are spawned back at your bed (and probably lose xp, never tried it out)

You don't lose XP with /gamerule keepInventory true turned on.

@Arperum, yes, that would definitely take the edge off. I've upvoted your comment here, but I'm going to see if the community has a more exact solution. Thank you!

Doesn't /god playername do the trick?

@Zommuter +1, /god looks perfect here, you just need minecraft-bukkit right ?

Doc
Is there a reason you don't just play in creative mode and...don't fly or spawn items? Just because you're in creative mode doesn't mean you have to take advantage of all the aspects of it (and is item spawning in the GUI now? it used to be via text commands in the past).

@Doc but creative mode doesn't let you harvest things (e.g. to build a torch you would need to collect wood and coal) because you don't have a proper inventory to collect items into -- you just have a limitless supply of items.

@Shunwoo isn't it part of native Minecraft? I haven't played in a while, but indeed I used bukkit back then...

Doc
@DoktorJ obviously I haven't played in way too long - it didn't used to be like that. If you wanted blocks of wood you either had to harvest it or had to do a text command to spawn a given number of blocks of them.

@DoktorJ Creative mode does let you harvest thing and does have a proper inventory. IIRC, it's the leftmost bottom tab, with the chest symbol on it.

@GiulioMuscarello You cannot harvest in Creative since every block is 1-hit and then removed, not dropped.

The name "survival mode" implies that death is a possibility. If the possibility of death is removed, the game should no longer be considered "survival." It would exist on a plane somewhere between survival and creative, perhaps with a moniker like "gather mode" or (with a nod to invincibility available to certain classes on multiplayer servers) "god mode."

@GeorgeCummins, I remember playing on servers that had something like that (around the beta 1.2-5 period). You could spawn yourself items (or harvest them yourself as there was no Creative mode back then), and health would never deplete (and no flying, not even with bukkit's Essentials /fly...

@Batophobia You can however middle-click a block to select its kind
