@Gilles The first Japanese election had to wait 134 hours (5 and half days) for the first nomination. (I looked it up and that's the record.) Since we had the same number of nominees as spots, we had to cancel it and start over.
I think the most useful thing anyone can do on here is give good answers to questions. With the ability to write good answers, and do basic review as a non-mod, I wonder how being a moderator would actually give me a way to help the site and its users.
Like @Gilles said, if Emacs had more low quality questions and answers, and argumentative users, I think more people would be drawn to being a mod.
