The trick for the component parallel to the current - for which we could not eliminate z -> -z, because that's simply not true; our current is directional! - was to take an Amperian spanning to infinity, destroying the integration symmetry of the current-parallel components, allowing us to find one (and by Ampere's law, conclude it to be zero)
