Q: Where are the lines as far as meta-ish worldbuilding questions?

apaul34208This may seem a little convoluted, so bear with me... My first question that came to mind in this meta-ish gray area was about suspension of disbelief when it came to specific audiences, as in: When creating a sci-fi world/story/game for teenagers you can get a away with a bit more hand wa...

This is important -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladder_paradoxLets have a talk about time travel and hard science. First: I’m going to describe why your FTL methodology is either impossible under our current understanding of the laws of the universe or way too complicated to explain. Second: I’m going to explain why it really, really doesn’t matter. Lots of people have noted, in varying

Q: What is our (Worldbuilding) Elevator Pitch

MikeyA friend was telling me in passing that she joined "the local hash," and I asked her what it was about and she said: "Great! Elevator Pitch! ..." and told very me quickly what it was all about. I didn't have one for WP. The idea is that in roughly the amount of time it takes in an elevator, you...

I'm kind of reasoning that the majority of the WB users are in the USA, so I'm running batches of image fixing when I get into work in the morning (UK), about 3am US Central. I'm figuring that by the time the USA wakes up, there won't be a batch of old questions bumped up.

@Pete Probably true. The chat seems to be most active after 2pm (Germany) too

Yes, right at the time when I should really be working. I'm not that active when I get home in the evening except for looking at the phone app.

Late evening / night is a little peak in my activity after the afternoon gap

Well, my last question got fairly well shot down. Oh well, it was cool in my head.

Your slingshot?

8:13 AM
Yep. Apparently black holes aren't that fun.

Sad... I thought it was funny

Funny is hard to do well on WB.

Yep. Sometimes it works (your office-friendly grenade), sometimes not (apparently your slingshot).

Now I'm trying to think of how to create a question around "Element of surprise" - the element being the chemical element kind.

I don't really know what you mean. Like a random atomic number to surprise everyone at a regular interval? Or a new element? I thought all elements were discovered and that there is no room left.

8:20 AM
No, it's a play on words - "The element of surprise".

Yeah I got that, but what would be the "element of surprise"? I thought you wanted to create a new chemical element.

@JDługosz I tried, but it didn't help apparently...

The weather here is miserable. . .
So much sleet, and maybe 3-4" of snow.
Anyone have thoughts about worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/q/73894/627? I'd vtc as Too Broad, but obviously I don't want to act unilaterally on an HNQ question.

Here the weather is relatively good. Not too much rain and 7-9° Celsius. Perfect spring
@HDE226868 It feels like most of the answers are quite similar to the one from Cort Ammon.

@Secespitus That's true.

I think it's opinion-based and I am not sure if "reality-check" is a good tag for something trying to deny physics. But I don't have enough reputation to really participate in these discussions.

@Secespitus I agree with you, so you can participate in my stead

@DaaaahWhoosh Thanks :D
I should come up with a few questions to get the reputation for VTCing. Still need ~1,8k
BTW: When does a question get to the HNQ? Is it a certain amount of views, votes, answers, etc. per day?

1:47 PM
@Secespitus It's a variation of this formula.

@Secespitus the HNQ list is created by a single man, in a room with hundreds of monitors. He never sleeps, never blinks, he only ever browses SE, and finds the questions to add to his list

@DaaaahWhoosh Sounds like a pretty good job

@DaaaahWhoosh The same guy who cooks bread when you put it in the toaster, right?

Thanks
@HDE226868 No, that's the one stealing your socks from the laundry

2:26 PM
@Secespitus Oh, right. Him.

3:22 PM
@TrEs-2b Cholera zombies for the win....

3:52 PM
@Pete the more I discover about the concept, the more I look for a better base. The idea of zombies shitting everywhere seems less scary and more funny

It's an awesome concept. Also it gives them more to eat than just brains.

The reason for cholera was for it to be waterborne (which is fairly uncommon in the medium), but as pointed out, Cholera lacks nervous system symptoms. Currently I'm trying to find a waterborne illness, based in the digestive tract, with neurological symptoms... Any suggestions?

A biological weapon mistake? Some nerve toxin gets muddled up with a jar of cholera and a glass of beer....
If you're showing this film on the SyFy channel, you won't really need science.

I don't need to explain it, I just like to do it for my own assurence

@DaaaahWhoosh wrong. Its a cat

4:07 PM
@TrEs-2b - Food for thought - bacteria (Cholera) could be infected by a virus. science20.com/news_releases/…

That is interesting

Maximum infection damage for sure.

4:26 PM
Heres an idea, if bacteria can get virus', then what about Shigellosis infected with Polio. Shigellosis is known for taking very little to cause an infection as Polio handles the waterborne aspect, as well as the neurological. Also since Shigellosis is based in the digestive system, bites would still work.

Sounds good. Polio isn't really a "wow" disease though, is it?

Made me laugh there, what's a a wow disease? Polio was a pretty big problem only a few decades ago

Oh, something like a hemorrhagic fever perhaps?

Wouldn't that just lead to a lot of dead zombies? hemorrhaging tends to be pretty darn lethal

aren't zombies already "dead"?

4:33 PM
In most zombie mediums, they fall into two groups; diseased and undead

Oh. The last time I was going to raise a question about zombies, I got so many questions about what definition of "zombie" I was using, so I got confused and dropped the idea.

For example, Dawn of the dead and walking dead, undead zombies; 28 days later, Last of Us, diseased zombies.

5:00 PM
but then you also have magical zombies vs biological zombies

True, forgot about evil dead

ooh, and cyborg zombies!
like in Deus Ex HR

Do those even count?

dunno, I feel like they should
what about... the things in Mass Effect
what are they called

5:33 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh . . . Oh my.

yeah, science fiction zombies are the best zombies

@DaaaahWhoosh Did the geese get evicted?

@James haven't seen any, but it's been cold. Maybe they all froze
as I left work yesterday, I waved goodbye to the doormen. I had a feeling I'd never see them again
I really should've tried knitting them some coats

5:53 PM
...do you know how to knit?

nope. But it should probably be on my to-do list to learn
I have sort of been learning to sew (that is, I sew things)

6:37 PM
@Secespitus - seeing that exact image in my facebook feed is what prompted my musings this morning. However, since I couldn't contrive some kind of question to you, then I knew I couldn't write anything sensible to the outer worlds.

6:48 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh When I was a boy scout back in the day I had to sew patches and stuff but thats about the extent of my experience.

@Pete I am sure you can come up with something ;)

@James I find that sewing is a good excuse for watching TV shows. I can't really do one without the other, both seem like a waste of time on their own

I'm trying to locate an online story
It was titled after a greek letter ... I think it was Rho
magic is studied scientifically, i think it's called thaumaturgic engineering
does that ring a bell for anyone?

perhaps the wikipedia page on thaumaturgy has what you're looking for?

7:09 PM
My river question reached the HNQ list almost five hours after it was initially asked. Hopefully, patience pays off.
@DaaaahWhoosh That's quite the mouthful. It seems better suited for a spelling bee, but now I feel strangely compelled to use it in writing.

@HDE226868 I'm definitely using it for a character/faction I invented for my world
he's part of a group of scientists and theologians who, after proving the existence of God, set about trying to find and exploit all the backdoors he created in the universe

"The Thaumaturger" is almost reminiscent of The Necromancer, but I don't think the name's quite Sauron-level yet.
@DaaaahWhoosh That sounds like a fun job.

@HDE226868 it really does. The character I'm imagining focuses on Christian miracles. He's on a pilgrimage to assess warfare/crusades as a catalyst. I imagine he fights with an effectively infinite supply of fish

He sounds popular with the dolphins, then, if he's got that much fish.
Who does he fight?

7:56 PM
@HDE226868 haven't quite figured that out yet. I'd assume space Muslims, but that might be culturally insensitive.
plus, they'd mostly be on the same side by this point
I guess they could fight wars just for the sake of nostalgia

2 hours later…
10:22 PM
hmm, looking back at my comment from 2 hours ago, I wonder if it'd be reasonable for people to go to war because that's what their parents/ancestors did. Like, could you develop a culture that just needs to fight wars, because that's just what they feel like they should be doing?

A motivation along the lines of my parents hated him so I hate him could work.

yeah... but I kind of want to leave hatred out of it. Like, no hard feelings, but it's my job to shoot at you. It's just the way things are
I guess that's potentially what WW1 was like... everyone went to war because that's just what they were supposed to do

That still required a catalyst though.
I'm not sure a war could start just because people think they have to go to war.

oh, right, yeah I guess that's a good point. The catalyst doesn't really have to be anything important, just enough to assume the other guys are going to attack you if you don't do it first
so there's always got to be that certain level of self-defense
... that is unless you're conquering something
then it's just 'why not'

You could have a catalyst that two sides fear that they will appear weak if they don't attack someone and each chose each other as the victim.

10:31 PM
yeah... I'm starting to wonder if I'm looking at this from the wrong angle, though
I mean, it seems like there have been periods of history where people just go and conquer other places
not out of hatred, but just because it's profitable

True. Even Hitler was doing that at times.

so I guess growing up expecting to fight isn't so strange, except for the fact that there's nuclear deterrents now

10:48 PM
@James the geese are alive! Or at least two of them are. I just saw them out the window.
2
just in case you were worried about them

11:28 PM
@HDE226868 I think it could be answered with authority on Physics. This is a real-world thing and we already have done so.
@Secespitus maybe it needs downvotes.
@TrEs-2b have you looked at parasites with multiple life stages? E.g. google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://…
@SerbanTanasa Awsome amature effort.
