@Clive Aviation is interesting, but as I said a lot of technology is quite old and changes are slow. The safety regulations for avionics are very strict, rapid developments are impossible. But I think there is a need for a more sophisticated data communication system for air-to-air and air-ground communications. The problem is not designing it, but introducing it while maintaining compatibility for older aircraft.
