@Miniman ooh... I think I've got the idea(s) for my version of this:
(a) constructed along the full Angry [megadungeon](http://theangrygm.com/category/megadungeon/) treatment, spreadsheets and all;
(b) L1-20
(c) the artifact is the Gjallerhorn, the horn of Mimir, the wise one, the guardian of memory, which when sounded will wake all the gods and start Ragnarok. The adventurers finding the pieces and assembling it is a scheme of Loki's
(d) a la Legacy games, when that horn is sounded there'll be a packet or sealed section to open. Stickers to place on the game-map, stat-sheets for all the go
Basically, two games in 1: a full campaign-length megadungeon, then a bloodbath of cage-matches.
I've added it to my giant list of "someday-maybe" projects. This could be fun. (In a year!)

@nitsua60 That sounds pretty cool!
@nitsua60 Do pieces of the horn benefit the players? If so, why? If not, why blow the horn?

@Miniman Benefit? Oh, sure--I'm thinking just like what you sketched out above: having one piece looks like a decent magical item, having a second is actually pretty cool, and by the time you've attuned a third the synergies are pretty awesome. It should also be apparent by this time that it's the various pieces of a horn... maybe they even fuse as you attune second and third pieces.
The fact that they seem curiously well-powered to complement each character will, of course, be a bit of Loki's fingerprints on the thing.
(I may have to 3dsculpt a horn, fragment it digitally, and 3d print it.)
As to why blow the horn... well there's a packet in the module that says "only open if Gjallerhorn sounds."

@nitsua60 I was thinking about this too, except for me it'll just be a 2D rectangle and I don't have to print it since I'll be playing online anyway :P

You can totally "complete" the dungeon without ever doing so.

@nitsua60 Ah, right, so you're not going to try to make them, just wait and see if their classic adventurer curiosity gets them there on their own?

And then there'll just be this pandora's-packet sitting there, tempting you.
In the bottom of a Risk: Legacy box, under the plastic tray (which you have no reason to ever lift out) is an envelope that says "Don't open. Ever."
My son is dying to open that thing.

I would be too!
Actually, I haven't even played Risk:Legacy, and I'm curious about it now.
I looked it up, because I'm a bad person :)

The envelope?

Yeah.
I'm assuming you don't know and don't want to know?

Both are true =)

Imma let you finish, but boardgames.stackexchange.com/questions/6808/… has hints but no spoilers. May enhance your fun...
