You plummet downward in a jagged halo of glass. Frank Miller throws the script down on the editor's desk and takes an early lunch.

If I asked 'Do I need to have a fancy planning system to write a good novel?', would I get downvotes? I'm really scared of downvotes. Please forewarn me :)

@DanielCann - First of all, you cannot control downvotes. They'll come whether you write a good Q/A or not ... no sense worrying about what other people will/will not be doing. Do your best and write a Q/A ... I really don't know about the topic, though. I'll wait for someone else to pipe in here.

@DanielCann two things. 1. "Good novel" is pretty subjective, so you might have problems there. Is your goal to get an editor to read it, to get published, to give your friends an enjoyable read? 2. The answer to any "do I need X" question is "no", in the sense that somebody out there didn't. It's more constructive to ask about the benefits and limitations of doing something.

@DanielCann I think a better question is, "what are the advantages to planning out a novel or not". But I seem to recall we've had some like that in the past, will take a look.
Also, what do people think of this question? I haven't had the time to read it all but it looks kind of discussion-y but also thoughtful.

Q: Creating a story in which the hero(es) lose

ggiaquinSo I am still in the primitive stages of creating my own world and story if I even do it that is. I am still trying to get a feel for where I want to go with it. The biggest issue would be that, my world would be heavily influenced from novels like Lord of The Rings, Redwall (children series si...

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I think this is related to your idea:

Q: Is there a hybrid novel writing method that incorporates both "pantsing" and plotting?

user9885I have wanted to write a novel for the past three years. I have read books on writing and taken online courses. Some of that material recommended not using an outline to write a book, and some recommended using an outline initially. No matter which way I have chosen to proceed, I have felt gui...

Q: Pantsing a story?

Elizabeth SchechterI heard a writer talking about pantsing a story. What does that mean?

Q: I'm not a great pantser; what kind of preparation do I need for NaNoWriMo?

StandbackI'm very appreciative of NaNoWriMo's "your first step is writing a crappy first draft" credo, and I like the motivation that NaNoWriMo encourages. I'm precisely at the point where what I feel I need most is some serious butt-in-chair routine, with less emphasis on writing well, so this credo suit...

Q: Is it OK to invent as I write, or should I plan the entire story first?

Amit JokiI have read Harry Potter and am a big fan of J.K. Rowling's writing and I had always had this urge to blog and to write. So, I started a blog - 2200 Common Era. I've the basic idea of writing a science fiction set in the backdrop of space. I don't know the whole story or to say, I don't have th...

Maybe you can find an answerable question that doesn't quite duplicate any of these!
But if you post something that needs a little editing, we can work with that too. If it's a dupe we might put it on hold while we edit it, but that's okay.

@NeilFein Yeah, I suppose so. I was just wondering why loads of writers follow these complex planning routines and they don't just enjoy the writing. I've written five books, each one with just a bit of planning so I know what I'm doing, and then I've just enjoyed the writing. I want to ask the question to hear how using one of the 'great' methods could benefit me

FIRE!!, a 1920s Harlem magazine "devoted to younger negro artists," is reborn as FIYAH, "a magazine of black speculative fiction."
