Q: Does the MOBI file format for Kindle use the same CSS standards as browsers?

Dave M GI am working with a designer who is helping me format a .MOBI file for Kindle devices. We're having a little trouble with a table of contents, where the indentation of lines is not being placed correctly. He claims that the problem can not be solved. I work with CSS and web design for my job, s...

Q: Why is my cover image being made grey in my MOBI file?

Dave M GI am creating a .MOBI file for upload to Amazon's Kindle services. I have a cover image that contains a lot of white. When I view the image in my Kindle app on my Android device, which has full colour, the cover has been made grey so that all the colours look less saturated, and the white areas ...

Q: Do these sentences sound stilted and unnatural?

user109341.) I don’t think I can use this vacuum cleaner for 30 minutes without worrying about my electric bill. 2.) I don’t want to ruin your hope of getting a sound advice on dating boys, but I haven’t dated anyone before. 3.) The bar exam is so hard that most law schools focus more on teaching their ...

Q: What is the Normal Process for Gathering Permissions for Quotation Collections

Mere InklingI am contemplating gathering a collection of quotations from a single writer, similar to The Quotable [C.S.] Lewis by Wayne Martindale [Tyndale]. Most of the writers works remain under copyright, and I recognize (as in the case of the aforementioned text) that permission would need to be gained...

Arya GreeneI have recently started typing a book called One With Water but it is so far only 29 pages and I am nearing the end! How many more pages do I need?

Q: Use past or present tense for lasting fact

Carina GunnarssonI'm writing a story in present tense. One sentence is a little tricky for me, and I don't know if I should use past or present tense: Present tense The tree was so massive, that it even withholds the strongest storms. Past tense The tree was so massive, that it even withheld the strongest s...

12:04 PM
hip hip hooray! :D

4 hours later…
4:34 PM
Who is up for chat today? I am available in about 1h20m.

user116848
I am

user116848
Hello!

Great.
Hi.

user116848
How are ya?

user116848
What would be today's topic?

4:45 PM
I dunno yet. I have a meeting in a bit. Then I can play.

user116848
Okay! See you after the meeting!

user116848
Bye!

I am here too, lol.

user116848
@JasperLoy Hi Jasper Loy :-)

user116848
@JasperLoy How is your OCD these days?

4:59 PM
@Arrowfar Much better. Planning one more year to 100 per cent recovery, whatever that means.

user116848
@JasperLoy Yeah, I wish you good luck

@Arrowfar I am planning to start studying on my own on Jan 1. I have many math books to complete before taking the GRE.

user116848
Yeah, that seems like a good plan.

user116848
Studies are always beneficial, no matter what.

5:22 PM
I will now propose today's writing topic: Miracle.

Your test works.

I am having internet issues. I have to reload the page to get it to update.

Sometimes, it is the site issues. Happens once or twice a month.

Maybe but I am also having issues on other sites.
Seems to be working no.
now*
Is anyone else done?

5:45 PM
Hello

Hello.

Do we have a quorum?

I'm here in a few minutes.

I thought we had started so I already posted mine.

Oh. Going with "Miracle"?

5:55 PM
Yes. I am not writing though. I am only here to propose the topic, lol.

I could go again if there is another topic.

@Jas you should write! what have you got to lose. It's not like you're afraid of oversharing :)

True. =)

Really? Miracle?
Five more minutes and I'm ready.

6:09 PM
OK, actually 35 minutes and I'm ready.

Haha.

6:30 PM
Right.
Well.
Anyone else going to do this with me?

I don't know what to write, lol. My miracle has not come yet.

Well, you can write that then.

Haha.

OK. Writing. Back in ten.

I'll write too. starting now.

6:42 PM
Done. Miracle.

@KitFox I am getting distinct Catholic school vibes.
Very good.
Re-posted mine so it is with the other

I take it you've never given birth?
;-)
Good choice of miraculous material.

<Is male.
And the result of said story. Not sure what happen so most of that story is made up, but I know my mom was never supposed to be able to conceive or give birth. But she had both me and my older brother.

My apologies. It's late in the day and I'm feeling snarky.

6:59 PM
Dude. That's heavy.

It is Deepavali here now, a public holiday. On this day, it is said that Krishna came down to slay some demon, bringing back light into the world. Hence this is called the festival of lights.

@KitFox I did not think you were being snarky. Did I sound defensive?

@KitFox For some reason, Jasper said "Miracle" and I thought of "boat"

@Aaron My private reaction was snarky and I wasn't sure how much that conveyed online.
The word "miracle" is that kind of trigger for me. It's not directed at you.

Ah.

7:02 PM
And now I'm over-explaining because I feel uncomfortable.

So about that weather.
:)

:)
I'm really hungry. Also, I got a new teapot today!

Yay teapots! Decorative or for use? Or both?

@KitFox Yeah the word miracle gets overused. There's a blogger I follow who periodically reports on what the media is reporting as miraculous.

Plus, I'm having a disagreement with an easygoing dev.
@Aaron Both!
It's my first one that I've actually used.
It's cast iron.
Painted green.

7:04 PM
I have never had a teapot honestly. Not much of a tea drinker anymore.
I worked in a nursing-home kitchen. Drank so much tea I am still sick of it 2 years later.

did they MAKE you drink it?

Oh, Maria showed me her pic, which is a good sign I guess.

No but it was just about the only thing to drink.

Recently I have been drinking a lot of coffee and almost no tea.

Like that one.

7:10 PM
Looks lovely.

I'm pleased with it.

Yesterday I did not sleep for 23 hours. It was a record.

I remember when I had insomnia and would cycle between about two hours of sleep at night for three weeks or so and then three to four days of sleeping for 22 hours at a time.
For months.

Wow, sounds wicked.

It was pretty bad.

7:21 PM
I am not sure what wicked means, but I used it to sound cool.

That was maybe three or four months, then I had my first full-blown anxiety attack.
I was jumping out of my skin for almost a week. My therapist told me that you can't have an anxiety attack for more than a few hours, at most.

I don't think I ever had a panic attack.
It's hard to imagine what one feels like.

But that shifted my "official" diagnosis from major depression to mixed anxiety-depression.

I have the opposite issue. When I get too stressed I shut off.

@Aaron That was my normal reaction. Well, dissociation.
So I guess it was progress, of a sort.

7:25 PM
I'm glad you got help. I didn't and still haven't and I have issues understanding emotions.

@Aaron Drugs may help to a certain extent by dulling your senses. Therapy may help especially if you don't already know the useful techniques or lack self awareness.

@JasperLoy The issue is lack of emotion at this point not an overabundance of it.

I was in my twenties at the time. I still don't feel like I process emotions normally.

I describe it like something halfway closed the pipes that my emotions flow out of.

But I can cope, and that's the most important thing.

7:28 PM
@KitFox Recently I have been very bothered by something. I call it a moral dilemma. I emailed Matt about it, maybe I will email you too if needed.

OK. I'm willing to listen.

@KitFox How did you go about asking for help?

@Aaron Hmm perhaps there are drugs and therapy for that too.

@Aaron I didn't. I had a good friend who talked me into it.

@Aaron I started seeing a doctor and taking some meds. Then I also went for 2 psychotherapy sessions, but now I have stopped.

7:30 PM
Then I shopped around for a good therapist. It took me years to find one.
But the first one was good enough to convince me that there was something wrong that could maybe be fixed.

I told my therapist I will make another appt when I feel I need one. It could be next month, next year or never, I don't know.
I also threw away all my meds a few weeks ago.

Q: What comes first: the hook or the rest?

LCIIIWhat is generally accepted method or writing a good song? To start with the hook and let the rest of the song point to it, or start from the beginning and let the hook come naturally? Is there a "best-practice" stated somewhere?

Songwriting can't possibly be on topic here, can it?

If it's the lyrics maybe?

1 hour later…
user116848
8:48 PM
@KitFox I don't write dialogues in my stories. I like to write them in a exposition kinda manner. Is that okay?

user116848
I only describe the scenes clearly.

user116848
Like in all my short weekly stories here.

9:15 PM
@Arrowfar It is perfectly OK if that's what you are trying to write.

user116848
9:30 PM
@KitFox Okay. Thanks.

user116848
@KitFox Miracle

user116848
I tried to insert some dialogues though.

user116848
Sorry for the bad language in the story :-)

The ending is almost like a real story.

user116848
Yeah, haha
