Q: How to get GTA type Cartoon Effect In Photoshop CS5?

MurdocNI'm new to Photoshop and was wondering how to achieve this sort of cartoon effect. I looked everywhere, youtube, blogs and stuff but still non were close to what I'm looking for. Look at the picture for clarity: I tried the following but didn't get what I was looking for: Made a duplicate lay...

to be honest it was probably done with the same tool as scanner darkly

@Joojaa I love that movie. Never did know how they did that kinda cel-shaded style. What tool is it?

I think he doesnt want to come to chat. He has 122 rep count for SO so there shouldn't be a reason why he cant access chat

2:35 PM
hmm I know I can't access chat on my phone, wonder if thats the issue

no clue

ah well we tried
Murdoc if you come in here, ping me and I'll see if I can help. If I have time I can try to answer in the Q&A format but its a bit hard since you seem to be after a universal system of key presses that will make any picture into a perfect illustration. You're always going to have to fine tune things.

Hey
Thanks for waiting. Sorry it took so long.

dont mind me asking, what was the issue?
your rep fro SO should have allowed you..
you guys need any of the comments from that question @Ryan or @MurdocN

I just read this chat message "hmm I know I can't access chat on my phone, wonder if thats the issue"
now using web browser

2:41 PM
that works
Thanks Matt

ok Im nuking the comments to the question

So Murdoc, do you have a single picture you're working on or a bunch? Because its going to take some fine tuning on any picture but can certainly get pretty close
There's a few tricks that help achieve this type of effect with Photoshop

scanner darkly, ya that kinda effect can work too. Or you can check TV show "archer"

A quick search found this tutorial that might prove effective

I basically want to learn how to achieve this in PS.

2:44 PM
But it too uses illustrator for some of the line work
One thing that helps is to separate the foreground from the background at least somewhat so you can adjust effects accordingly to get different levels of detail

is it better than PS? I mean I got PS after checking what it does which is spectacular per se.

also on really rough parts like the girls jacket in your attempt, you can blur that either with the blur tool or gaussian blur to remove some of the harshness before you apply your effects
Illustrator isn't better than Photoshop. It's different.
If you got the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription then you should have both

I'll check that out.

@MurdocN I don't think you can achieve this easily in PS. to me it looks like it's hand-drawn in Illustrator

And apart from this effect (that Tony's image), how to get low level cartoon effect like in games like GTA covers?
I think that can be done in PS?

2:51 PM
the GTA looks like the background at least was done in illustrator using the erm... auto-illustrate (not correct name, will have to check) but basically a tool that automatically attempts to trace the image, Wait thats it, auto trace feature.

You could try the 'cutout' filter in addition to what you already tried, but it won't be as slick or sharp as either the GTA or the Tony Stark examples you're giving

the Iron Man example is even signed and dated

Cutout and Auto Trace are in Illustrator, right?

@MurdocN That one was probably started with the Live Trace tool, and then heavily edited in Illustrator

2:54 PM
yes

Cutout is a filter in Photoshop

Live Trace is an Illustrator function

here's a pretty quick attempt entirely from photoshop
i increased the saturation, made a second layer with a level mask of sorts, blurred parts, applied some filters, and then touched up with blur and smudge a tad

what filter(s) have you used for that?
I obviously looks better than my edit.

3:00 PM
(everything down the scroll was just more smudge)

ok

the duplicate layer is then edited with threshold and then changed the layer mode to color burn but you can play with which layer mode you like best

Right

anyhow Ive spent too long on this and need to get some work done. ill check back a bit later

I'll give it a try now.
Thanks!
I'll let you know if I get what I want.

2 hours later…
5:13 PM
@MurdocN I played with it a little more on my lunch break. All was just threshold, levels, layer blending modes, blurring, and a little bit of color to her face
(did a real rush job adding the background so the hair doesn't look too good at all)

5:40 PM
Looks awesome. (y)
I see motion blur on hair

ya did a small motion blur just on her hair in the direction its going. Would be a lot less obvious if I had taken some time to clean it up around her chin but it works.

It's cool anyhow.
I was downloading Illustrator as well.
Did you use brush to color the face?

Yeah just a brown brush on a layer ON TOP of the other layer then changed the layer mode
brown / tan color I should say
most of it is duplicating a layer, adjusting the levels and threshold then changing the blending mode. Only filter I used was a very slight gaussian blur on the entire thing

6:06 PM
for the smooth effect, right?
as it gets very soft towards its end and provides better quality of blur

what are you asking about? Which part?

gaussian blur

uh I just did gaussian blur at the start because illustrations don't have as much detail as photographs
kinda like how magazines airbrush models to make their legs look smoother then they really are

ok
Alright sir, thanks for your help and time. I got to go now. Catch you later.
