Welcome to chat for: Operating Systems
This is a general discussion room, but please feel free to create more subject-specific rooms (a single room with every possible discussion isn't very helpful)

I'd forgotten this was today
I don't have any questions ready
Mind you, I'm not convinced this site should exist at all

A: Your Thoughts on an "Operating Systems" Proposal

GillesBackground: I'm a former computer scientist (not in an OS-related field), current developer working on an in-house OS, and I've been around Stack Exchange quite a bit (including being a moderator of the Computer Science SE site). I do not feel any need for an Operating Systems site. When it come...

I don't see what this site would do that Stack Overflow and Computer Science can't do
unlike Embedded Systems which does cover some ground that none of the existing sites cover

Q: The Real Essential Questions of Every Beta

AsheeshRThe blog post Seven Essential Meta Questions of Every Beta gets linked to prominently from every beta's meta. However, this blog post is somewhat inaccurate and actually misdirects new users. In almost every beta, for example, the site design question gets asked and undergoes a fair bit of discus...

Yo, @Gilles. I just want you to know that, though we appear to vehemently disagree with regards to whether OS.SE should exist, I do respect your opinion and I don't try to come off sounding like an all-out contrarian.

@AdamMaras ditto here

@Gilles now quit trying to make my favorite new SE go away ;p (I kid, I kid)

I don't think the site exists, but: 1. if someone comes up with a good reason for the site to exist (presumably in the form of questions that thrive here but would fail elsewhere), I'll switch to supporting it. 2. as long as the site does exist, I will support its having good content.
(even if I'd prefer to have that content on SO/CS)
but 3 questions in the first 4 hours is extremely bad
I've been in several betas and I can't remember anyone starting that slowly

hey, I'd love it if SO had the same kind of focus on OS that it does NullPointerExceptions in VB.NET WinForms apps, but you know as well as I do that kernel-layer questions just get lost
but this is my first startup SE that I'm trying to be involved in, so enlighten me: what is a more common level of traffic for a private beta?

Computer Science started relatively slow and had its 20th post (Q+A) after 2 hours
Cryptography had its 20th post after 1 hour, and it was slow too
The now-slowest site, Poker, had its 20th post in 20min
Italian Language, another slow start IIRC, had its 20th post after 2 hours
Chess, also about 2 hours
2 hours for the first 20 posts is the slowest I can find, and we had 5
