Q: Mishneh Torah Statistics

user6781How many halchos are in the Mishneh Torah? How many chapters are in the Mishneh Torah? How many books are in the Mishneh Torah? (How many halachos, and chapters are in every sefer of Mishneh Torah?)

@AvrohomYitzchok, the subject of the question, the Mishneh Torah, is, without question, within the realm of Judaism. I don't particularly like this question, in that it asks for a bunch of work with no apparent motivation, but I fail to see how it could be classified as off-topic.

@IsaacMoses There are a lot of questions on this site which is very similar to this. If you want I can show you. They generally do not get -points so why makes my question worse then theirs?

@AvrohomYitzchok I don't understand the distinction you're drawing and/or "within the realm of Judaism" is definitely on-topic.
@user6781 If you want me to share my opinion about simiarly-formed questions, compared and contrasted with this one, please specify one or two, and I'll do so. Note that I speak for my own opinion and cannot account for any votes other than my own (which I have not cast on this post, FTR).

1) Suffers from similar problems to this, but at least it's asking for fewer products. 2) See my strong critiques there. 3) Asks for a pointer to a list, rather than a list, which is much more tractable and answerable. Still would benefit from the addition of motivation. 4) Same as 3, except that the motivation is a little more self-evident. 5) Is also asking for a big lift with no explicit motivation, which isn't great, but at least it's an inherently divisible task, unlike statistics compilation.

@IsaacMoses "3) Asks for a pointer to a list, rather than a list, which is much more tractable and answerable. Still would benefit from the addition of motivation." That is exactly what I want. (You think I am asking people to count each letter of mishneh Torah)
@AvrohomYitzchok Why?
@AvrohomYitzchok It seems like this is fine as you can see from my many examples of questions which seem like good questions based on votes comments etc.
@AvrohomYitzchok So what makes mine different?

@user6781, in all cases, questions are a great deal stronger if they include information about what's motivating them. I would encourage you to edit such motivation in to all of your statistics questions. Preemptively answer the question: "Why do you care to have the answer to this question, and why should anyone else care to expend effort to answer it?"

@IsaacMoses Why do you think adding a reason will help? And most questions are without a reason.

@user6781 You are asking for free labor from people you don't know. If you include a reason they should care, it makes it more likely that they will answer. In addition, including the motivation makes it more likely that answers will be tailored to be useful for whatever you actual goal is. For many types of questions, the motivation is self-evident from the question itself. IMO, this is decidedly not the case for this type of question. And yes, many of the other 11K questions on MY could use improvement of one sort or another.

@IsaacMoses That is the definition of a Q&A site. I am asking for facts and a reason why I want those facts, why would it matter? If they are people I do not know then why should I tell them my reason? If this was not a Q&A site where the purpose is to answer questions then I should only have a question not a reason, but I agree with you if this was not a Q&A site, for example a friend, I will tell him a reason 1. I know him 2. He is not a Q&A site meaning it is not his purpose.
And I agree that a lot of questions here need improvement but my question is, if according to you questions are better with a reason, so then the questions without a reason should be ALL going down. The problem I have is that I see questions going great with just a question of statistics and no reason, and mine which is the same is going down. And I really do not know what the difference is, if you think you know that will be great. It does not seem like there is one.

@user6781 I'm arguing based on your self-interest, not fairness. If you want people to choose to devote attention and effort to your question, my advice to you is to make it as compelling and answerable as you can. In addition, it's in the interest of this community to have as many question posts as possible be as compelling and answerable as possible, to make it most likely that people will choose to devote attention and effort to the community as a whole. That's why people like me take an interest in the quality of question posts written by others.
@user6781 You have very little to gain by worrying about how many votes each individual question gets. No one can ever account for any vote but their own, and votes can be cast for any reason, including shared interest in the topic, appreciation of the writing style, anticipation or observation of great answers, political affiinity, etc. (I'm not endorsing all of these reasons, just saying that you never know what's behind each vote.) ...
... If you want your questions to attract more upvotes, asking for advice and critique in the comments is a good first step. Acting on the advice you get is a very good nect step. People are ultimately going to cast votes based on what they see in the question post, not on how it compares to other questions or on what arguments are made on its behalf in the comments.

I did not put a reason for a few reasons 1. Most people don't so why should I 2. This is a Q&A site and no one needs to know why I want it. 3. Since I do not know any of these people I try to keep private and my reasons are private. All they need to know is the question to answer it 4. I do not really have a reason I was just thinking

@user6781 I wish you hatzlacha rabba in achieving your ends, whatever they may be.

I do not care how much votes I get, but I do not like when I get -4 with no comments it does not help this community. And I also do not like when everyone else with the same type as question gets no comments and - without putting a reason and I do.

Q: Commentless downvotes

TRiGIs there a policy to encourage people to make comments when they give downvotes? Commentless downvotes do very little to improve the site. If something is wrong, you should explain what about it is wrong.
