Hi Baby!
me earlier:
But I'm better now.

Why were you noping

We have a couple of users that I'd really like to send on a mission to Mars.

Lol
Darwin wins

Cool ! :) I bet he rarely knows hunger.
So in addition to the two users who are really pushing buttons, we had like a dozen questions and answers yesterday from never before seen users that were just extraordinarily bad.

8:59 AM
@Jolenealaska lol. I can think of a better planet to send them to.....

9:27 AM
well
another day begins
let's check the to-do list
....
nuffing

> KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — The Taliban captured the strategic district of Sangin in the southern province of Helmand on Thursday, the culmination of a yearslong offensive that took the lives of more combatants than any other fight for territory in Afghanistan, according to local officials.

you realise the nopes in that gif relate to the spider itself
it's not a way of displaying nopeness

It's a gif. I can interpret it in any way I want. :)

but then we have to look at a horrifying spider each time

I'll delete him

9:36 AM
phew
I don't mind little ones
big ones freak me out
my daughter opened her reading book from school yesterday next to me and GREAT WHITE SHARK. Jumped out of my skin.
<shudder>

You lost me there. Great white shark, you mean big spider?

no
i'm talking animals that freak Tall out
big spiders
great white sharks
that's about it actually

Ah
Did I ever tell you about the wolf spider I caught my dad's dog playing with?

hmmm
dings a dong

Biggest spider I've ever seen outside a pet store.
I need to reboot. BRB
I ended up calling an entomologist to be sure it was OK to release the spider (that he wasn't dangerous)
Non venomous, not prone to be aggressive. They hide all the time, that's why Iowans don't even know that they are surrounded by them.
What do you make of this?

Q: Is vinegar just vinegar - even with a different flavor

dougal 3.0.0Is vinegar simply just that - vinegar? If one were to keep every type of vinegar called for in recipes from around the world then there would be a lot of different types. Surely the basic chemical make up of all vinegars is the same, however the taste varies with what it is made from ie: cider ...

10:03 AM
all spiders are venomous
just that some aren't dangerous to humans

Mornin' guys.
@Jolenealaska PIA user.

@Cindy Yes that!
@ElendilTheTall Almost, but not quite
> Second, we have a set of false assumptions about spider venoms. Almost all spiders are venomous; only two small families lack venom glands.
Of course, my spider is not one of those

@Cindy hi

@ElendilTheTall How goes it?
@Jolenealaska Sooooooo annoying.
Back in a few........

10:19 AM
SSDD
:)
I have Ted Nugent's Stranglehold stuck in my head
which is annoying, because he's a dickhole
but it's a catchy song

Well, I've searched. I can't find an actual dupe to that question (the one I just posted above).
@ElendilTheTall Of course I Googled that. Thanks for sharing the joy :)

have you not heard it before? it's a rock classic!
the long noodle section in the middle goes on a bit, but then the main riff returns in fine style

With rare exceptions, I have always drifted towards music a bit more... soft?

10:38 AM
Awww... really?

@Stephie Yeah, I know. I keep my car radio set to the oldies station - You know, Billy Joel type stuff.

Neat. I like Billy Joel!

How do you not sing along with Piano Man? :-)
@Stephie you are exactly the person I was hoping to see. Do you eat a fair amount of seafood?

Remember that I used to do ballroom dancing. And yes, I do sing along.
@Jolenealaska not as much as I'd love to. Define "a lot" ;-)

Well, there is a question on the main site that I could answer very well if the OP lived in America. He lists home as "Continental Europe".
In the US, unless you happen to live in a place where you can practically buy fresh seafood off the boat, it's almost always actually better to buy frozen than fresh.

10:48 AM
Fun Billy Joel fact: he sang all the parts in the The Longest Time

I'm hoping that you'd like to answer the question, or fact check me as far as European versus American seafood purchasing.

Q: Good Frozen Fish /seafood

OlavFish seems to be one of the food items that is much better with fresh ingredients than frozen. Why is this? If I want to shop frozen food for my freezer, what should I buy? Looking for Very delicious end result and/or Good result for the price and/or types of fish where the frozen vers...

@Jolenealaska agreed. "Fresh" can be quite "fishy", so to speak.

Great line!
Wanna answer, or shall I?
It's a fave! :)

@Jolenealaska Go ahead, I'm busy here. I happen to get paid for being here, I should at least pretend to work.

10:56 AM
@Stephie I was once like you

And now you stopped pretending?
Current task: get the kitchen to work faster because we are ahead of schedule.
And we can't have about a hundred of hungry people stampeding to the restaurant and have no food ready.

@Stephie basically yes
lol
past caring

You sound like the model of a bore-out case.
Urgh, we need to keep them talking for another thirty minutes.

I just got an update that the attacker in London was British born, but that he had not been under the radar.

I'm sooo not following the media on this.

11:11 AM
what's a bore-out case?
@Jolenealaska yes, known to MI5 apparently
(MI5 = the FBI, basically)
can't watch all the suspects all the time I guess

You could, but the cure would be worse than the disease.

especially if they're not communicating with anyone

and that's what this sort wants

@JourneymanGeek indeed
"those who would trade liberty for security deserve neither"

pretty much
I'm also inclined to throwing them in the stocks in a pigskin jacket for this sort of thing.

11:14 AM
violence just begets violence unfortunately

Well, maybe. But the thing is violence has to be directed and discourage others not be punitive.
I mean, the romans would probably have publically crucified that guy's whole family

@ElendilTheTall the opposite of a burnout.

i see
yeah, that's about right :)

11:39 AM
Still here @Stephie?

doesn't look like it

Yep. Well I just wanted to run my seafood answer by her for a European take on it.

A: Good Frozen Fish /seafood

JolenealaskaI'd like to start with an analogy. Look at what you said in comments that some vegetables are actually better purchased frozen than purchased fresh. Let's take frozen peas vs fresh. Peas notoriously begin to lose flavor and their great texture as soon as they are picked. Quality manufacturers of...

looks good to me
but then I am the last person to talk about fish
<gag>
fun fact: Japan's flag is also a pie chart showing how much of Japan is Japan.

I know, otherwise I would have asked you! :)
@ElendilTheTall cute :)

11:52 AM
lol That's awful!

but true
lol
actually only true in Paris
in my experience
Parisians want you dead

@ElendilTheTall on the contrary
they consider you an inferior life form. Wanting you dead meant you actually mattered
The southerners and northerners are nice. Just not to each other.

you've obviously never driven around the Arc De Triomphe
they want you dead

You are in their way

all French car insurance policies are null and void on Le Etoile

12:15 PM
@Jolenealaska lunch. Back soon.

@Stephie OK!

12:39 PM
brrr
the air con is stuck on

Why is it on at all?

well, it's not air con as such
more like climate control
but it's stuck on cold

Aaaaand I'm back.
Lunch was excellent.

Yay what was for lunch?

12:54 PM
I had steamed "Tall doesn't like it" with spinach.

sounds great! I just had beans for breakfast :(

Cod, to be exact.

Speaking of, have you had a chance to read my seafood answer?

Not yet.

He stresses that he is European, so I'd like to add anything that might be more specific to there than here.
Dammit. I've been trying to convince Kitty that she is allowed in this kitchen; it's apparent that she was trained in her old home that kitties don't belong in the kitchen.

1:07 PM
lol
If she was a dog. I'd say... totally no chance ;p
We didn't even train ash to stay out of the kitchen, and his ex owner didn't really have him long enough to either ;p
@Jolenealaska does she refuse to go anywhere near or stop at the doorway?

So just now I dropped a bowl of bean soup I was eating, made a big mess. I cussed a blue streak just as she was right at the line between carpet and tile. She sees that as the boundary.

Confirming the "stop here" idea.

Not very bright critters. ;p

I think that's the first time she's ever heard me yell like that too. :(
She's under the bed now. I've only once known her to hide like that. There was a "stranger" (now her friend, George) in the apartment.

1:13 PM
wow

Ours has decided that he can wake me up to feed him around five am. I'm in the process of untraining him.

how can we make this bland and tasteless fish even more bland and tasteless? cook it with water!
🙄
;)

??

steamed cod
at least deep fry it for heaven's sake

spiced up and covered with herbs

1:14 PM
hmm

and steamed with some kind of broth
Not bland at all.
The cook here seems to have a kind of dried flowers mix he likes to use. A bit repetitive if seen two days in a row, but still...

you're not selling it Steph
:)

1:55 PM
It's kind of a backhanded compliment ;-)
And selling a seafood dish to you would be a futile attempt anyway.

hands @ElendilTheTall a block of tofu

thank you
I'd much rather tofu than fish

2:49 PM
tum tee tum
awfully quiet

I'm here!

hello
twice in one day?

I was just reading an article my news feed.
An Israeli - American, Jewish teenaged boy has been arrested in Israel for bomb threats against Jewish centers in the US.
That takes my breath away.

3:05 PM
the world is a stupid place

It seems extra-special-stupid these days.

@Jolenealaska ugh
might have some issues if he couldn't serve in the military

@JourneymanGeek How do you mean?

@Jolenealaska we roughly have the same rules they do.
and if you're physically fit, mental illness is about the only way to get exempted
and it needs to be serious and potentially violent
So the kid might need help.
Its really horrible, especially since folk may not take real threats seriously, but there may be more to it than we know right now

That seems like it could, if not done really carefully, pretty badly stigmatize mental illness.

3:14 PM
I have a teenaged nephew with some rather serious anger management issues, supposedly somehow related to his Asperger's syndrome. He has been telling his mother that he wants to join the military upon graduation from high school. Dad told me about it when he came to visit. The very thought scared the crap out of me.

@Jefromi yup

I remember basic training. They put a loaded M-16 in your hands and then stand behind to trying to get under your skin.

@Jolenealaska heh. I'm pretty sure the folks who trained us my first time were nuts and somewhat incompetant.

I see that as potentially really tragic.

Do you guys have a battle indocrination course?
crawling across a simulated battlefield, live ammo over head?

3:16 PM
I remember seeing the basic aptitude test a friend had when he applied for the army. one of the questions was like "John is taller than Jack, who is tallest?"

@JourneymanGeek probably, with a different name.

best of the best eh

@JourneymanGeek Oh yes

did it once, it was hot and my knees hurt. Got yelled at for standing up. While dehydrated. Basically told an officier politely, I might faint if I didn't drink something. Drank 2 liters of water. DID IT AGAIN.
went home with 2 blistered oozing knees.

A tour as a drill sergeant is extremely good to have on a military resume.

3:18 PM
they also ignored me limping for 2 months
The other batches were less dumb.

I stood up during that exercise too, to prove a point to the soldier next me who was scared beyond reason.
I got into big fat trouble.

The recourse company only had heat exhaustion cases (and us trainees were all "We are NOT letting that guy who dropped out of commandos fall over. He needs water. GIVE HIM MORE WATER" and passed our water to him.
third time, no one gave a shit ;p

The soldiers in training are not supposed to know that the tracer bullets were good 10 feet over our head.
It's not exactly brain surgery when you can see the turrets the fire is coming out of.

lol
yup
shooting someone in the head during training would be bad

I made that point as well!
We were as safe as in our mother's arms, more so in at least my case.
(my mother was nuts)

3:24 PM
Oh, people did die in training
just not there
some poor kid got dunked during escape and evasion trianing when I was in the army

Our number one manner of death in basic training is suicide, followed by homicide.
The danger was not when tracer bullets were flying over our heads. The danger started once they put loaded M-16s in our hands.

lol
We don't load guns except at range
we don't have ammo unless its range or guard duty
also, we're rediculously careful about spent rounds
well used to be. New ranges are "leave the rounds on the ground, we'll sweep". Then they xray our stuff and use metal detectors on the way out ;p

We do all those things too.

We do not ever hand anyone a loaded gun ;p
or ammo until right when its needed ;p

3:39 PM
Same here. The homicides and suicides either happen on the range or during guard duty; or the very skilled soldier in question was a very sneaky son of a bitch. Either way, it happens. Does it never happen in Singapore?

Nope
I guess the two person system stops that
(buddy + an officier (for 2 lanes)
also the newer ranges have a few instructors

3:51 PM
did anyone see the recent video of the jackass gun instructor?

@ElendilTheTall ??

let me see
even Brits know you keep your finger off the g-d trigger

That's great!
I have to give him credit for his recovery though. That shot would have rattled most people a helluva lot more than that

4:06 PM
apparently that particular pistol has a notoriously light trigger
a woman killed herself doing the same thing - the recoil brought the gun up under her chin, and then the gun fired again into her head

That's a pretty popular size in Alaska, do you happen to know the brand?

S&W I think
44 magnum

Damn, I know a few S&W 44 Mags. I've never heard of that trigger issue with them. CN has a S&W 44 Mag.
44 Mags are supposedly the smallest weapon effective against a big bear. A lot of people bring them camping for security against bears.

4:29 PM
hmmm
probably better off just shooting yourself if the bear's close enough for you to hit anywhere that's going to stop it
did you see the other video of the guy that was attacked by a grizzly twice?

I did not!

4:49 PM
Oh yeah, you have shown me that.
Dude was having a bad day.

5:00 PM
indeed
well, my day is done
cya later Jolenator

After while, um, Tall!
