hey you
how you doing?

Hi hon. I'm OK, I just got up
You?

yeah, not too bad thank you

Dragon is choking BRB

when does it not? xD

10:14 AM
Jojo the Dragon tamer ;-)
Morning, you two!

hi @Stephie

I'm so hungry, it's affecting my mood.

oh dear
Hangry eh?

You bet! Which reminds me that I need to set up a meeting with that group leader, that keeps interfering with my team.

strike while the iron is hot and moody eh?
:D

10:20 AM
And the coffee here is abysmal, too.

gosh, you are on the warpath

Coffee! That's what I need. Dragon is back.

A non-native would be more careful with it
(-‸ლ)

One would hope. It's just painful.

well, let's hope he can butcher meat with the knife as well as he can butcher the language eh?

10:37 AM
My cat is demanding food. She is not being subtle about it.

it is not in cats to be subtle in my experience

Well there will be no peace for me until I feed her. brb

Hello! 🌞

hi @cindy

@ElendilTheTall How goes it?

10:40 AM
much the same as always sweet
how about you?

Same old stuff. Expecting a quite warm day, mid 80's (F). Then storms late.

10:53 AM
We don't expect to see a cloud for the next 10 days.

we had snow yesterday
actual no-foolin' snow
a whole inch

That must've freaked people out :)

mass hysteria

Did they cancel school?

they cancelled Tuesday

10:54 AM
Good grief
They regularly get snow in Scotland, though, right?

um
depends what you call regularly
they didn't really cancel Tuesday by the way
it was pretty localised snow
gone by lunchtime
they get snow in the Highlands in winter, because they're Highlands
but otherwise we generally get snow once a year
for about 2 days

Interesting, since the tippy top of Scotland is the same latitude as Anchorage.

then it rains until the week of summer, then it goes back to rain again
Yeah, but we have the jet stream :)
and we're a tiny island
we don't have a massive landmass keeping the cold in

Do northerners ever see northern lights?

yes, if they can find a place dark enough
which is generally the Highlands again
England has a population density of 413/sqkm, Scotland is 68/sqkm
and most of those a concentrated in the Central Belt
the highlands are mostly empty

11:11 AM
This is interesting:
That makes me realize something. I bet I haven't seen a globe in 15 years.

lol
yes, the Prussian States have merged, did you hear?
and there has been all sorts of kerfuffle in Mesopotamia

:)
That latitude comparison taught me something. I would never have known that the entirety of the UK is north of Vancouver. For some reason I always thought you were somewhat in the latitude area of the American lower 48.

lol
thanks Jet Stream!

I would have guessed London was about equivalent to Boston in latitude.

trans-Atlantic flights normally fly over towards the pole somewhat

11:28 AM
Okay, exalted one who always knows the answers to this type of question:
What do you call a map of the world centered on the poles?

what do you mean?
a top down view?
or bottom up
as it were

Top-down is the one I want
But, I figured the word would include both

not sure there's a specific term
north pole centric?

That makes me smile so much
I can't help it

makes you realise how big the Pacific is

11:31 AM
Santa! You xenophobe you!

there's not much round that side at all

I was imagining a polar projection map (there's the term!) that ended at the equator.
Look how weird Australia looks!

I can imagine that as a trivia question, basically "on a north pole projection map, what is this country?"

have you seen a Peterson projection map that shows the landmasses in the correct proportions?
sorry
Peters projection
Mercator always makes Africa look tiny
it's fkn huge in actuality

11:37 AM
Alaska gets squashed :(
And stretched
What a crick in my neck!
I have very fond memories of a giant globe (8 feet in diameter?) that stood in the doorway of the Des Moines Register.
My dad's law firm used to be in the same building, above the paper.

It was not unusual for me to need to wait for my dad.

I think Bill Bryson mentions that in his childhood memoirs
his parents both worked for the Register

And he went to my high school!
If I had to wait for my dad, I would wait for him by the globe. I would almost always be somewhat reluctant to leave.
It also used to have a plaque that said, "One newspaper has won more Pulitzer Prizes in international journalism than The Des Moines Register. Our congratulations to the New York Times"
Our political cartoonist also won a record number of Pulitzers.
Although he was number one I think, not two.
And here it is! Not quite as big as I remember it. (imagine that)

I'm sure that drew visitors all the way from Fudd County
:D

11:52 AM
I feel oddly moved by that photo.
@ElendilTheTall yes :)
That and the life-sized cow always carved in butter at the Iowa State Fair
That little girl leaning against the glass could be me except for that dress.

yes, if it was your dress the plaid would be orange even through the black and white film
xD

Yes :)

12:10 PM
America in video form:
WOOOOO FUCK YEAH! GET THAT BALL DOWN!
:D
it's why we love you and roll our eyes at you at the same time :D

Yes, I can so see that. I would be cheering too :)

Now my cat has been fed, so she is begging for love and attention. It's funny, she isn't nearly as loud (usually) begging for affection as opposed to begging for food.

I need a word.... now

12:30 PM
Ha!
That looks says, "I will kill you in your sleep for this"

enjoy this while you can hooman
it will be the last thing you ever do

1:16 PM
last night I noticed the temperature control on my fridge is marked 'colder <------> coldest'
what. the actual. fuck.

@Jolenealaska a true nightmare.

1:57 PM
lol
my mom tried to use the noodle maker on her own...
she first added too much water, then tried to fix it and....
yeah, the noodles ended up... unusual.

2:26 PM
As in...?

6 hours later…
8:37 PM
To 10 K!!!! And now I'm there... provided no one downvotes me. :P

Congratulations!

Thanks! :D I can now see dead posts... or, deleted ones, anyway :D

"I see dead posts" - when you put it that way, one wonders why it is something people want to achieve

@Catija congrats!
Evening, girls!

@rumtscho Because it's fun... for some reason I really like being able to see what got deleted. A lot of these posts are amusing.
@Stephie Thanks :D

8:51 PM
Aaaand good night - I just fell asleep for a moment on my computer. Possibly a sign to quit for today. Sorry!

Awww, sleep well! Seems like you're mostly there already!

2 hours later…
10:58 PM
... and then I idiotically downvoted two bad answers and was down to 9998 rep... But then someone upvoted me so I'm all good. :P

11:19 PM
lol
I was on 99 9989 reputation. I was hoping for one upvote so I'd get 99 9999 reputation...
got an accepted answer...

I can't even imagine getting a six figure rep count on the entire network, let alone on one site alone.

;p
Its one, large active site, over an extended period of time.

It still requires a ton of subject knowledge which I don't have. :P

eh. A lot of it is googling and getting sucked down interesting topics
oh and HNQs
On active sites, its pretty darned easy to find one question per day to answer, and that was a pretty important part of my stratergy to hit 10K
also helps being an early user superuser.com/users/1931/john-t this guy us 2 places ahead of me and his most recent answer was in 2011

11:39 PM
@JourneymanGeek Wow... I bet they get a lot of residual rep.

yup
hence the one question a day thing I talked about. If I get 10-20 reputation from old posts a day - that's 3500k rep in a year ;p

I think M&TV is the site I get closest to that on... and ELL... but there's not a ton of residual rep on ELL... I don't think that most questions are generic enough to solve many peoples' issues.

yup
lol
quite a few of my recent questions are basically consolidating knowledge from elsewhere
and/or closing the loop on a problem I talked about on chat.
(and they're rediculously niche, and somehow help others)
superuser.com/questions/1039396/… for example is a piece of software that hasn't been supported in years

That's nice that you're able to help people like that. :)

lol. More like, Its the one thing that worked for what I wanted to do, imperfectly, and someone else was like "Oh, that looks like fun"

11:49 PM
Superuser has a really broad collection of subjects, right? It can be for any sort of software/hardware?

pretty much
though phones are out
tablets are a grey area verging on white ;p

Are phones out because they have their own sites to some degree? iPhone questions can go to Ask Different.

our initial scope was home PCs
but scopes change over time

Ah, it's nice of you all to change with the times :P

Tablets are allowed cause of windows RT not having a site
course windows RT died ;p
yup, and android has its own site.

11:56 PM
Interesting... so I could ask questions about my iPad but not my iPhone? That's amusing.
I have one question on Ask Different... I don't find that it was suitably answered but that's because I think Apple's treatment of the issue sucks... so it's not really AD's fault for that.

In theory ;p
I don't recall any ipad questions on SU

Q: Is there a way to turn off iOS 9 update reminders?

CatijaThe answers to this question imply that the reminders do not recur... but that's for versions prior to iOS 9. Much like with newer versions of OSX, iOS 9 will remind you every other day or so to update giving only the options to "update now", "remind me later", "view details". The third option ...

But, hey... it's a pretty popular question, considering it's my only one.
