But the other thing I was thinking about the meat: Piercing won't make it drier, but will it ever help with the marinade? Why would the marinade flow into the holes at all, and when it does, why will the tiny amount matter?

12:37 AM
@Cindy My own experimentation has led to conclusions that do not agree with ATK. One was adding lemon juice to avocado is supposed to retard browning. Another is here:

Q: Preheat the Dutch oven (and the oven itself) for No-Knead Bread? (experiment results)

JolenealaskaI'm trying the America's Test Kitchen tweak of No-Knead Bread. The video segment on the website conflicts with the attached written recipe (sorry, paywalled). The video clearly says to preheat the oven and the Dutch oven before slipping the dough into the hot Dutch oven and baking it. The written...

I may disagree with the ATK tester, but I was tickled to get the response.

They do not have "God status" in my mind, but I do find the membership useful. I have since closed the account that I used to buy my last subscription, so I'll at least have to respond to an email when my current subscription is up. I will probably not renew anytime soon. They allow free access to new stuff from the current season anyway.

@Jolenealaska If you ever find you need one of their recipes, let me know and I'll send you a PDF. I just renewed my membership last week.

@Catija Nice to know! :D
TY!

Welcome :D

Click through to the full size images and try to read them out loud to someone.

@Jefromi That's cute :)

Morning all

Hi Hon
This early to rise crap has consequences. I'm sleepy and I have 4 new episodes of Game of Thrones.

what's a girl to do

But, I got a lot of stuff done today that needed to get done.

A rich, full day then

Yes
I am about 1 book ahead in reading Game of Thrones from where I am in the series. Weird. I keep thinking that I've already seen the scene, but then I realize that I only think I've seen it because it looks just like I imagined while reading.
The death of the "king" at the hands of the shadow is a perfect example.

9:12 AM
I think I prefer the series to the books, actually
I found myself skipping on through the books when it got to really dense parts
blah blah blah come on
whereas the series tends to cut out that fat

You would so hate Hugo. I agree, yet I also enjoy stretching it out. More 'bang for the buck' and all that.

I'm sure
I hate most writing pre-1930 or so
blah blah blah
paid by the goddamn word
give me Hemingway any day

Yep, paid by the word is probably not the best way to go.
Hemingway could turn a phrase.
Do you particularly like any present day authors of contemporary (not fantasy or sci-fi) novels?

hmm
I don't really read much non-fantasy or sci-fi fiction as it happens
I read for escapism
I either read sci-fi, fantasy, or non-fiction

I pick up a lot more nonfiction than I ever actually read.

9:27 AM
this was the first 'normal' novel I have read in years

Hmm, I see another theme.
You seem to like maritime novels set in the 1800s.

this only starts in the 1800s
and it is somewhat more 'arty' than O'Brian

The first time I read a best-selling contemporary novel, it was Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer. Funny, the last time I read a contemporary (not fantasy or sci-fi) novel. it was by him too.
Kane and Abel still sticks out as one of my favorite books ever.
Have you seen How to Train Your Dragon?

9:42 AM
yes

Impressions?

erm
it was ok
been a while since I saw it
standard issue stuff

I may have been in just the right mood, but I loved it. Yes, it was formulaic, but it threw in just enough surprises to keep me wanting more.
I also tend to bawl if I like a film, so the more I cry, the more I liked it.
I was a snot-monster at the end.

lovely

living alone has its advantages

10:08 AM
if you call being able to liberally coat yourself in mucus an advantage, no wonder you live alone ;)

Afternoon

user116848
Jaqen H'ghar is one my favorite characters in the series. The way he talks is cool.

user116848
A man has said.

user116848
:)

He just brought down the first in the episode I just watched. Yes, I like him too. I'm a bit concerned about Ayra. She seems to be a bit overly drawn to the Dark Side.
{please, no spoilers}

user116848
10:17 AM
Oh good to know.

Hey guys!

user116848
Hi Cindy. How goes it?

I am about one third the way through book three, I am currently watching Season 2, episode 6.

user116848
I have a way of babbling about endings <zips my mouth>

@Cindy hi you

10:20 AM
Hi @Cindy. What's new?

@ElendilTheTall How's it going?

ssdd, as always :)

@Jolenealaska Same as Mr. T says. Same stuff. Just dealing with sinus infection and bronchitis on top of the norm. And nasty, nasty weather.
@Jolenealaska I answered your question. Very nicely asked in such a way to keep it from being opinion-based. :)
Hi @Arrowfar!

I pity the fool who has a monotonous life!

It has been ridiculously warm here all winter. At this rate we'll have "Save the Polar Bear" telethons soon.

10:28 AM
@Jolenealaska Yeah, it was in the 70's Wednesday. And still in the upper 60's yesterday morning. Then it went to s***. Turned cold and windy and rained all day and night. Now we're getting sleet and snow.

We haven't been bitterly cold (read that double digits below 0F) since early/mid November. It's hugely slick though, melting then refreezing really sucks.

I ran into a lot of the melting and refereezing last week in the northern VA area. That's an area that got 3 feet a couple of weeks ago.

@Cindy Thanks. Provolone is definitely on my radar.

I've grown happy living in a place with a mild winter
this year, we almost had snow once

10:36 AM
the hills around the city got it, but down here in the valley there was none
the summer is not so nice though
much of the time, it's not very warm
and when it does get hot, it's an oppressive no-escape heat

I was driving through mountains last week and while the snow was pretty, it created some strange views. It was right around freezing and the sun was bright. In every valley or low lying area, there was a haze or fog. I guess from the sun shining the snow. But at higher elevations, there was no effect like that.

My apartment hasn't gotten cool enough yet. I have my windows open and a fan blowing from a window at least 3-4 hours per day. With the window shut, my bedroom gets too hot just after sunrise and doesn't get cool enough until nearly sunset.

@Jolenealaska ouchies. Is this the south side of the building?

hold on...

@Jolenealaska I lived in a house like that some years back. In the upstairs areas you couldn't cool it down. Windows open in the dead of winter.

10:44 AM
Is there a way to install an air conditioner linked not to the outside, but to the neighbour unit? Assuming the neighbours like it warmer than you do and are currently heating, that would be a net win for both.

@rumtscho 6 o'clock is due south. My windows are here:
@rumtscho No, there isn't. I'll buy a window AC unit before I melt, and I may have to sleep in my living room for a few months. (My living room window is good for placing an inexpensive AC unit)

11:13 AM
@Jolenealaska How many BTUs are you thinking?

Hopefully, next year I will have a portable AC unit for my bedroom. The maintenance dudes were here earlier today and they have seen units like mine kept cool by just the one unit in the living room.
@Cindy Well, I'm not sure. If I just try to keep my living room cool, I could probably get away with 5000.
However, if I am trying to cool the whole apartment, I probably need 10,000.

@Jolenealaska I'm thinking you would be better off with two 5000 BTU units than one 10,000. You can keep the temperature more even that way. Plus they wouldn't be as large or heavy.

I can get a 5000BTU window unit from Amazon for $120, with good reviews. Unfortunately, that will not cool my bedroom even close to enough.
It will make my living room habitable.
My bedroom window is not AC friendly.
My bedroom will either need a portable unit ($300+) or a 10,000 to 12,000 BTU unit in the living room.

@Jolenealaska I'm with Cindy there. Better a portable unit in the bedroom than a very strong one in the living room

@rumtscho I think so too, but it won't happen in time for the summer.

11:29 AM
that's another advantage of the two unit solution then - your "buy only one first, sleep in the living room" plan

so, I'm just going to get a 5000 BTU window unit for the living room by mid-March.
I can experiment with it and probably sell it at no loss if I really think that it isn't going to help.

I think it is going to help
my parents have such units
OK, maybe not "window units" exactly, but small AC units built into each room, not a large system planned together with the house
they work quite well

I need it to help enough. Certain things are just not negotiable. I can live without chocolate, I cannot accept being too hot. I lose my mind.

Well, I don't know which temperatures you need. But the summer where my parents live gets very hot, and the thing is still capable of keeping up with the demand
in fact, my mother frequently prefers to have it turned off, or on a very mild setting, because she's afraid of getting a respiratory infection. And I suspect that she has similar adverse effects from heat as you do.
I don't know how many BTUs it has, but I'm sure my parents didn't buy overdimensioned, they don't have the money.

@Jolenealaska How big is your bedroom window?

11:37 AM
I'm not sure that I can pin it down to an actual temperature either, but if I'm sweating that can only be bad.

I cross my fingers that it works out!

Perhaps 6' x 3', horizontal orientation. It slides from the side and the apartment complex is very strict about blocking part of the window with plywood or anything like that.

You're right. Not AC friendly at all.

I have a window in the living room that is perhaps 25" inches wide and closes from the top. That is the only convenient window for an inexpensive AC unit that I can find.
It is there that I could put the $120 unit from Amazon.
The living room window is 20" wide.
There is also a huge corner, almost floor to ceiling window in the living room. That provides light for my garden, but does not help the heat situation.

12:17 PM
Hi guys :)

@mien gosh, twice in one year? we're honoured

:D
and we are only February!

@Mien hi!

indeed

I think it is even twice in one week, no?
@rumtscho hey you :)
so, how is everyone?

12:18 PM
same old same old
you?

@Mien did you see, we have an election!

I saw!
I was here a couple of days ago :)
and I have already casted my valuable vote!

Glad to hear it. I'm excited about the results, and also about working with one more person.

with how many mods are you already now?

there's two active now, me and Jefromi

12:24 PM
oh boy :D

I don't even remember if Jefromi was already elected when you were coming here regularly

what happened to all the others!? hobodave? aaronut? :P
he was not I think
I know you were not

hobodave had no time for moderating when he got a new job at Groupon (which I think he later gave up)
@Mien I wasn't? I know that at the beginning, I wasn't a mod, but I thought you were still around when I was elected.
Aaronut seems to also have no time for us, but we have not heard from him

I was coming here regularly from quite the beginning

Regarding the election: I am fairly certain that I know who is going to win. I appreciate Catija more than I can even express for throwing her hat in. Had she not, this would have just been embarrassing.

12:26 PM
Actually, I got a LinkedIn notice this week, Hobodave has started his own business

but I "stopped" being a regular about 2-3 years ago I think
in food?

but I don't know if he also gave up his day job
@Mien I didn't click through to the description. I doubt it. He's a professional developer and his biggest hobby is fitness. I think he worked as a fitness trainer for some time.
I haven't talked to him in ages, I just notice these things because I have him as a LinkedIn contact.

cool :) I don't

Hobodave was just before my time, but I have enjoyed his posts.

so have you finished your PhD already, @rumtscho? ;)

12:28 PM
@Jolenealaska Reputation does correlate a lot with election results indeed
From my point of view, both you and Catija would make an excellent moderator, I'd like to work with either of you.

@Jolenealaska He was/is a nice guy :)

@Mien No, sitting at it as we speak. Last study is underway, and I have over 80 pages written.

@rumtscho Yes, add "candidate score" and it's almost insurmountable.

@rumtscho cool! keep up the good work :)
when are you planning on submitting it?

When it's ready :) Should be sometime this spring.

12:30 PM
Too bad politicians don't get a "candidate score".
@rumtscho Good luck with that!
I will go back to my work now ;) ttyl folks and have a nice weekend!

I had hoped for the beginning of April, but balancing a job, Stack Exchange, being on the board of a sports club, and some private stuff, the deadline still slips a bit.

you are in a sports club?

@Mien started kayaking a year and a half ago. They talked me into becoming the cashier.

Oh nice!

Kayaking itself is great, and being on the board is also an interesting experience. But managing the financial flows takes a lot of time, especially for somebody as disorganized as I am.

12:33 PM
@rumtscho What ever happened with the job at SE? Did it die with the contract issue?

But except for the "time sink" aspect, every single thing around that kayaking hobby has been exceedingly positive.
@Cindy They wrote to tell me they are not interested. I still don't know if they expected me to write them and got tired of it, or if they saw me unfit for other reasons.

@rumtscho Sorry to hear that. I was so hoping it would work out for you.

But I must say that the combination of that communication breakdown with the advance of my disease made me much less enthusiastic about working for them. There was a time about 2-3 weeks after the interview when I thought "I should call them and ask what's the situation" and decided against it, knowing that I might be reducing my chances without such a follow up.

@rumtscho Well, most often it's best to follow your instincts.

I would have gone with the flow and taken a next interview if they had offered it, but that way is also OK.
I am facing another application dilemma now, was thinking to write it up either for Workplace or Academics as a question. Maybe you can help now.
There is a prof coming to my research institution, opening a department.
I've been encouraged from different places to apply for a position in that new department.
The department itself is in medical informatics, very relevant to my career
so, he is already here, his department is already functioning (I think he came on the 1st of January)
he only took a handful of people from his old university along
and he is supposed to make a big department, 30 people maybe
he's also taking over the project which will be my current coworker's next assignment
now, I had planned to wait until my current coworker or somebody else I know well gets to know either the professor or Dr. L., who's his right hand. This will likely happen within the next 3-4 weeks.
And then ask through my coworker (or other contact) for a meeting, so I can talk to them what positions are planned and which would be a good fit for me
I assume here that the prof is more interested in getting somebody internal than an unknown person from outside, and I know that my current boss will support me if he asks internally if I am a good person to hire
Now, I looked at the job openings this prof has published. There are only 3-4 of them out for now, I assume he wants to push them out gradually
and there is one which I would really, really like to do
I know which project it is about (it's the one my coworker is working on), and it is a great, very interesting project. Cutting edge stuff.
And the position itself is exactly for my specialty.
But the problem is, the project is already underway, and he needs somebody as soon as possibl
application deadline for that position is Friday in a week
while my current contract goes on until the end of June
I might be able to switch somewhat earlier, if my current boss's boss approves (and he's potentially OK with it)
but I can't do a full time job before I have finished my thesis, which will still need 2-3 months
also, if I apply for this job, I will need to get into contact with him now, before I have built up a connection over other people
and then I will be just another resume
so I don't know what is better to do, wait, or not wait

12:49 PM
It sounds like a great opportunity. I always tend to be proactive with these things, rather than waiting. It conveys a true interest and desire. I would apply, explaining your current situation in an interview and see what happens. Worst case is that if the current opening doesn't workout, you can be forefront in his mind as the other positions open up and you apply.

and if I wait, what exactly do I ask for? A pre-application talk so he can tell me what positions he's planning to create? Isn't that a bit too much to ask for, as a job applicant?
Oh, what I didn't mention: if I apply, I am 100% certain to get an interview. There is an internal policy that every internal applicant has to be invited. So there will be a personal talk for sure.
But you see, I know that he needs somebody right not and not in July, and I think he'll know that I know that
and in this case, it seems somehow impertinent to apply for a position which is written for "start: as soon as possible"

I would move forward with it. He may be willing to accommodate your needs. And, if not, you are in the perfect situation to ask about future positions.

I could, in an interview, tell him that I won't mind switching over to his team. But then I am afraid that I will be seen as disloyal to my current project. It is understaffed, and they are letting me go because they don't have the money to keep me longer, not because they don't need me.
Now that they scraped the money together to keep me for 6 more months, I feel bad not staying until the end.

@rumtscho I wouldn't think it would be viewed as disloyal, as you know your contract will expire and you need to prepare for your future. And yes, they did help you out, but you were up front with them about other employment opportunities and the fact that you may need to leave before the end of your contract.
I think you would be able to let the prof know enough of the details to counter any negative feelings about it.
Especially with the support of your current supervisor.

@Cindy thanks! Very good thoughts.

1:01 PM
Any time! I tend to look at application processes from the view of a hiring manager, and base my actions on what I would want to see in an applicant. Not that my way is the only way, of course.
@ElendilTheTall may be able to share insight also. He is pretty knowledgeable about such things.

@Cindy No, but as somebody who has almost no insight of the hiring decision process from the point of view of the hirer, I really have nothing on which to base my choices.

@rumtscho I understand completely. Sometimes you just don't know which way to go. I have felt the same sometimes during the application and interview processes. But then I can take a step back and think about what I would want to see.

@Cindy so, you don't think that requesting a personal talk before any application would be especially positive or important?

1:18 PM
G'night guys!

@Jolenealaska Sleep tight!

@rumtscho I would absolutely go for it

@rumtscho If you're going to apply for the current opening, not really. Especially considering that the application deadline is next Friday. Of course, there is another way to go that could be very positive. You can ask for an informal meeting (before next Friday) to discuss future openings. You could then let him know that you really would like to apply for the current opening, but <describe your current position, dissertation, etc.>.

@Cindy yes, that was just what I was wondering about.
I considered 1) just applying, 2) asking for an informal meeting before I apply, and 3) not applying, but waiting to build connections and then asking for an informal meeting for discussing future positions.
I have no idea how to evaluate which of these three is a good idea or a bad idea.

Just apply
That's what interviews are for. Explain the situation early on, if he can't use you, the worst that happens is you take up ten minutes of each other's time.

1:30 PM
Yes, ultimately it's up to you. But if it was me, #3 would disappear from the list. Get in and then build connections. Waiting is often not the best idea.

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take

Exactly. And you have to be thinking about your competition for the positions. Are they waiting? Or are they making inroads now?
Hi @Stephie!

Hi @Cindy!
What are you discussing?

@Stephie my next job application
54 mins ago, by rumtscho
I am facing another application dilemma now, was thinking to write it up either for Workplace or Academics as a question. Maybe you can help now.
start here

Apply.
If you "fail as anonymous resumee", you can still use your contacts for the next matching opening.

1:36 PM
haha :D

woot, boss has gone home early
that means I can do what I was going to do anyway, just less surreptitiously

user116848
Cool.

I just had my afternoon plans (coffee, novel, sun, patio) blown.

@Stephie oh :(
what happened?

I am taking an underage bat to the kids carnival.

1:47 PM
@Stephie How's your leg/foot?

The only bit that remains is caffeine.

underage bats don't go to the carnival alone?

@Cindy wobbly, but good enough to drive short distances.
@rumtscho not if the event is 10km or so away.

@Stephie That's progress! :)

You need more busses.

1:49 PM
@rumtscho if the bat was my elder child...
So last minute costume scramble....

user116848
@Stephie Which novel?

@Arrowfar chick lit (aehm...)

user116848
Ah :)

@rumtscho Good luck!

@Cindy thanks!

user116848
1:55 PM
@rumtscho Good luck with the job hunting rumi!

@Arrowfar Oh, it hasn't started seriously yet, I have 5 months more on my current contract. But if I can secure my next job early, that would save me from a big hunt later.

user116848
ah I see.

and it's much easier to get my foot in the door applying within the same institution

Wish me luck... Off to the madness!

user116848
Good luck!

1:58 PM
@Stephie have fun with the kids
