4:00 AM
@FaheemMitha Here is another book recommendation: Memoirs of a Geisha. Shockingly written by an American man.

2 hours later…
5:51 AM
@jolenealaska morning

How you doing?
How about a bit of anger to start the day?
“It’s a deep-rooted conviction; my conscience won’t allow me to do that,” Davis said Tuesday. “It goes against everything I hold dear, everything sacred in my life."
You can dislike it as much as you like, but you have to find another job to dislike it at...

He's already lost.
Bye, don't let the door hit you in the ass way out.
Or she...whatever. :)
suck it up, buttercup
If you hurry maybe they'll let you into Ireland before they allow such an abominationation...that's a nice Christian country! ...Oh yeah, my bad.

6:14 AM
Indeed

@ElendilTheTall Wow, someone who actually read that. Impressed.
And you don't have have to read everything on kindle.

@FaheemMitha read what? Sorry, I'm on mobile, it doesn't link back to replied to comments
I wonder if SE chat has an API... Hmmm

@Jolenealaska Well worth re-reading.
@ElendilTheTall Memoirs of an Invisible Man. If I understood you correctly.

You didn't. But I'd like to. I'll have to see if the library has it

Can one read PDFs on Kindle? Just curious.
8 hours ago, by ElendilTheTall
@FaheemMitha I was going to get memoirs but it's not available on Kindle :(

6:18 AM
Yes, but it can be hit or miss as to their legibility.

Yes, I see that I did misunderstand you.
@ElendilTheTall Ok.

It was the word "memoirs" that made me think of Memoirs of a Geisha.

7:09 AM
Ah, July in Britain. 10 degrees and drizzling
Last week, the hottest day on record. This week, the above...

7:23 AM
One December in Chickaloon it was -35F one day in the middle of the afternoon. 24 hours later (so afternoon again) it was 45F (as in, above zero). A difference of 80°F in 24 hours (that may not be exactly right, but it's close). It was one of the damnedest things I have ever experienced.
Although, 10C in July is chilly even for here.
(At least during the day)

I blame the Greeks

That makes complete sense.
Mystery solved.
I saw an internet headline yesterday that made me nod, laugh and hang my head.
American response to financial upheaval in Greece: "What does that mean for us?"

7:44 AM
Elementary, my dear Brown
Greece is in economic turmoil. Result: fewer tourists, of whom Brits make up a significant portion. Result: fewer jets leaving the country. Result: less heat being pumped into the British air. Result: it's cold. QED.

You're so smart!

You know it baby

@ElendilTheTall Wow, real hard science there.
@ElendilTheTall See, you can sound like Austin Powers when you try.

I just got a very disturbing email.
Here I am, about 2 weeks from (hopefully) signing a new lease (please let my credit score be high enough) the federal student loan people have suddenly forgotten that they forgave my loan four years ago.
I was just informed that on some database somewhere, I am 20 days delinquent.
The timing of that snafu would almost be funny if it didn't scare the shit out of me.

8:00 AM
hmm
get on the horn
it'll be fine

I tried, I have to wait until morning, they're closed now.

well, don't sweat it

It's hard not to.

I know
but don't

I'm the one with the car that I can't drive because Jupiter seems to be really pissed off at Mars, the cop who won't return my calls, a negative checking account balance and a missing drivers license that I won't be able to replace until I move but need in order to move.
So my credit rating taking a temporary nosedive right now would just be par for the course.

8:15 AM
I am having fun with our tax people
they say I owe them x amount, but I don't, because valid reasons
they advised me to write a letter stating said reasons
payment of outstanding tax is due end of this month
I wrote the letter in May. I called them earlier to check progress. They advised they are currently opening mail received in December
O.o
So I can either pay them money I don't owe
or I can let the payment lapse, then wait for the debt management team to contact me and tell them what's going on
but that makes me nervous

Well, you could send them a check! By the time they open the envelope it will be too stale-dated to deposit.
Is it typical for them to be so backlogged?

no idea - probably

Do you figure your tax and tell them what you owe, or do they tell you what they say you owe?
(as a rule, not specifically this bill)

8:34 AM
you fill in a self assessment form, and they tell you what you owe from that
Actually, the norm is that you are taxed via your employer. I just have some extra work that I need to file for

How confident are you that ultimately they will agree with your take on it, that you don't owe them?

Fairly confident
essentially you don't owe this particular tax if you made less than £5000, and I made about £600

Well, that's pretty straightforward.

8:53 AM
yeah
my instinct is to let it lapse, but I don't want it to appear like I have ignored them

I find it hard to imagine being nervous enough to pay now unless you really need stellar credit in the next few months. Other than making it difficult for you to get credit right now, what can they do?

I've emailed our office accountant to see what he advises
@Jolenealaska fine me and/or pass it on to a Debt Recovery Agency who would add a massive fee?

How can they feel ignored if they are over half a year behind in opening mail?

well, quite
But you can bet your ass the system for recovering a missed payment will be instantaneous
it won't hang around for 7 months like the letter will
I would hope that they are self-aware enough to work on that basis though

@ElendilTheTall if you pay now but they realize that your reasons are valid, you'll get your money eventually, right?
and by eventually, I mean at next year's tax return date at the latest?

8:59 AM
@rumtscho only half of it
the '14-'15 year's amount, essentially

@ElendilTheTall why is that half?

and then the rest the following year, right?

let's say they think you owe them 300 pounds tax on 600 pounds you made

@rumtscho I just happen to have filed for about the same amount each year
@Jolenealaska no

if you pay 300 pounds now, won't they return 300 pounds next summer?

9:01 AM
No

Now I am completely confused.

They think I owe 125 for 13-14 and 125 for 14-15.
I can only claim back 14-15
it's too late to claim back 13-14
because they say so, basically

so if you owe them money, you owe it forever, if they owe you money, the debt disappears after one year?!

@rumtscho apparently so

Somebody should take them to court for that

9:04 AM
pfff
be my guest

@ElendilTheTall I don't even think I can sue somebody if I'm not his "victim"

indeed. I was being facetious :)
anyway, I will see what the accountant advises

@ElendilTheTall yes, sometimes the experts have good ideas we laymen never think of. I'll cross my fingers for you.

I'll be curious what he says.

in the past they have been very reasonable. One year I genuinely owed about £100 and they arranged a 12 month plan without a problem. I would hope they would be as reasonable this time.

9:10 AM
@ElendilTheTall Sounds good. I grew up to be very wary of bureaucratic structures, but since I've been living in Western Europe, I realized that they can be reasonable too.

I have, of course, zero experience with tax agencies in the UK, but in the US the IRS is generally very reasonable with average people.

I'd write them a letter to let them know the situation, but it is apparently pointless
anyway, let's change the subject
what does the day hold for you both?

@ElendilTheTall Mine is terribly full, but some of the appointments are fun
I already have 2 hours of dissertation and 1.5 hours of work behind me
in the afternoon, I'm going to two presentations/lectures
one is Requirements Engineering for Molecular Programming, I've been looking forward to this one for a few weeks

I have to go to three different places in three different parts of town tomorrow, and I don't know exactly how I'm going to do that.

and then I got a mail today that there is a "slow science" seminar today on the topic "Design Principles of Cell Circuits"

9:15 AM
@Jolenealaska It helps if you are getting your income all from one place, like a lot of people do. The more complicated your taxes, the more the actual and potential headaches.

I've never seen a cell circuit aside from simple examples of how natural mini-circuits in the nerve systems work, and I really want to see it
and then there is a Board games evening at a cultural center, which I'm visiting with a friend
working in the meantime. Sadly, there is one meeting I have to attend even though I'll be totally unneeded and bored there. But the rest is OK.
@Jolenealaska :(

@Jolenealaska time machine. Simple.

@FaheemMitha headaches come with a complex financial situation, that is different from unreasonableness on the part of the government.

didn't you say there is a program where you can get a special bus to drive you somewhere if you call in advance?

@rumtscho Western Europe is a miracle of orderliness and sanity compared to most places.

9:18 AM
@FaheemMitha I find that it's a miracle of goodwill/trust towards strangers, which has some very nice side effects such as governmental structures being reasonable to the average person

@Jolenealaska Well, there is more opportunity for unreasonableness if the situation is more complex. At the risk of stating the obvious, govt workers tend to not be very bright.

@FaheemMitha it's usually lowly administration employees who are not very bright, it doesn't matter if they work in the govt or in industry

@rumtscho It's all relative, of course. I think for the example the level of corruption in the rich countries of Western Europe is about the lowest in the world. Which may not be saying much, of course.
@rumtscho Agreed.

the govt actually gets the cream of the cream for certain institutions. But not for tax office mail opening duty.

@rumtscho I don't know about the cream of the cream, but there are certainly some very capable people working for govt.
Random example - I assume the faculty of UC Berkeley are all govt employees, am I right?

9:22 AM
@FaheemMitha No

@Jolenealaska They aren't?

I don't know how it's regulated in the States

Hmm, I thought they would be. But Berkeley is a state school. Are they employees of the State of California then?
@rumtscho Me neither.

In Germany, universities are a very special construction
they are a kind of legal person which belongs to the public, but is not owned or managed by the government

@rumtscho Is that unusual?

@FaheemMitha There are a few other institutions which have this status. But I don't know how common this type of structure is, internationally.

In the US, the state universities certainly fall under the control of the State Legislature. That I do know. For example, the NC legislature sets UNC tuition.
@rumtscho ok. And what is the reason for this?

@FaheemMitha No idea. I don't know much about laws.

@rumtscho ok

State schools are not government run.

@Jolenealaska But don't the state school employees count as govt employees?

9:30 AM
No. Hold on I'll try to find something that explains it better that I can.

@Jolenealaska I think that for everybody outside the United States, "government" doesn't mean "federal government" by default
when we say "government employee" we mean somebody who works for either the federal administration, or the state administration, or the county administration. The difference is not important to us.

But the government (state or federal) does not control the universities. The universities are subsidized by the state, but they are not of the state.
In some jurisdictions janitors or cafeteria workers may be government workers, but university faculty are not. They are not paid by the government, they are paid by the school which is in turn paid by the government.
Government employees are paid by the state of Alaska or the United States or the city of Dallas... A professor at the University of Iowa is paid by the University of Iowa.
Not the state of Iowa.
They are employees of the school, not the state.

9:50 AM
@Jolenealaska Ok. But like I already said, at least in NC, the legislature controls tuition. And I had the impression that the same was true in CA at least. Of course that does not, in of itself, mean people working for the universities are govt employees.
@rumtscho That is true.
And I used to be in the US, and the distinction wasn't important to me then either.

Controlling tuition is a far cry from controlling the school. Consider that the government offices are up for grabs every 2,4 or 6 years.

@FaheemMitha do you share your culture's stereotypical love of cricket?

@ElendilTheTall Nope.
I did read about it in P G Wodehouse, though.
E.g.
Mike is a novel by P. G. Wodehouse, first published on 15 September 1909 by Adam & Charles Black, London. The story first appeared in the magazine The Captain, in two separate parts, collected together in the original version of the book; the first part, originally called Jackson Junior, was republished in 1953 under the title Mike at Wrykyn, while the second half, called The Lost Lambs in its serialised version, was released as Enter Psmith in 1935 and then as Mike and Psmith in 1953 – this marks the first appearance of the popular character of Psmith. == Plot introduction == The first half of...
I like Wodehouse's early school stories.
As regards cricket, I think he makes it seem much more interesting than it really is.
@ElendilTheTall you might have figured that out already, but I am really not terribly Indian, as Indians go.
@Jolenealaska Agreed.

@FaheemMitha yes, you really are a disappointment
;)

@ElendilTheTall Yes, sorry about that. Maybe you would have preferred Raj from TBBT.
I'm terrible with women, if that helps.

10:00 AM
The Ashes are about to start, so expect lots of cryptic ejaculations on my part regarding googlies, silly mid offs, and LBWs.

@ElendilTheTall I do know that LBW means Leg Before Wicket.

@FaheemMitha pff, even @Jolenealaska knows that
right jojo?

@ElendilTheTall damn, and that was my best shot at impressing you.

@ElendilTheTall nope!

be cool, woman
ah, here come the anthems
Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is a lovely one

10:06 AM
Although I just learned that some faculty at some state universities are kind of considered state employees sometimes.

@Jolenealaska Well, that's a very qualified yes.

although the government can't hire them, fire them or directly pay them.

@Jolenealaska Hmm. And which states does this apply to?

Tennessee specifically

10:09 AM
@Jolenealaska oh

Minnesota specifically not.

Maybe that should be "what states".
"which" is for people, right?
@Jolenealaska ok

either which or what works for me.

But per the rules of English grammar, one of them is probably incorrect.

Tall would know.

10:11 AM
The ELL would probably be happy to tell me.

They both seem right to me, there isn't always only one right answer.

what what?
which is correct

@ElendilTheTall See, you can do PG Wodehouse too.
@ElendilTheTall Oh?
@ElendilTheTall say what-ho.

> If it weren't for quotes, conversations between gentlemen would consist only of 'what ho!'
Which: asking for information specifying one or more people or things from a definite set.

@ElendilTheTall That wasn't quite what I was after, but it'll do.

10:14 AM
What ho Faheem! How the devil are you, old thing?

@ElendilTheTall Hmm. Ok, I guess I was overthinking it.
@ElendilTheTall What ho, old chap. All tickety-boo.

That was very pretty!

Hmm, the net thinks that tickety-boo is of Hindi origin, so it seems appropriate.
@Jolenealaska what was?

Land of my Fathers...the video Tall posted.

@Jolenealaska oh

10:19 AM
Wales is a pretty place, once you get away from the south Coast
and even most of that is very pretty

Sorth England is quite scenic too.

Sorth?
The north of south england?
I know I'm biased, but there aren't many parts of non-urban Britain that aren't scenic in some way
the South tends to be rolling chalk downs
the West Country is rugged coastline and windswept moorland
The Midlands is archetypal Shire-country - hedgerows and orchards
Wales is mountains and waterfalls
Northern England is moors, mountains, and lakes
Southern Scotland is lush pastureland
Northern Scotland is back to epic mountains
and you can drive from one end to the other in less than a day!
Come to Britain: it's fucking great!®
oh jesus
7-1
(-‸ლ)

Damn! Alaska is over 7 times the size of the UK.

yup
What is a long drive to you?
What would make you say, jeez, that's a journey and a half

300+ miles

10:33 AM
how long would that take you, roughly

The first time I drove to Anchorage from Des Moines, I had to make a pit stop in Phoenix.
It depends hugely.

give me your best guess, average, rough back-of-a-cigarette-packet number

Valdez is 300 miles from here. That trip, during summer would take less than 5 hours.

I thought as much
our sense of scale is totally different
3 hours is epic

@ElendilTheTall strange, because I would also see a drive of >5 hours as long

10:37 AM
Big time...Very few people on the planet have the sense of scale that Alaskans typically have.

>5 hours is long, ridiculously long

@ElendilTheTall I meant that for me, 5 hours is the grey area around which it starts deserving the predicate "long"

@Jolenealaska I doubt it's confined to Alaskans though - most Americans would happily drive for a couple of hours to get a good taco. That would take you clear across the UK at some points
@rumtscho case in point ^

I wouldn't drive a couple of hours for a taco

@ElendilTheTall South

10:39 AM
even Continental Europeans have a different sense of scale

but my commute to my highschool was 45 minutes
and if I'd stayed to study at home, it would have been 90 minutes to the university
that's within the same city
granted, it's two diametrically opposed places in a large, dense city with very little underground railways yet

45 minutes to high school is pretty up there for normal people.

@Jolenealaska it's ridiculously long for most Europeans

@Jolenealaska Quite normal for big third world cities at least.

I happened to live in a very large city, on the periphery, and to go to a special highschool in the center

10:42 AM
I can see that 'because it would also be long for almost everybody in the lower 48.

Note that I was going by bus, I wasn't driven by my parents
It's maybe 10 km as the crow flies
but it's 10 km with changes from bus to streetcar, some walking, and on congested streets
public transportation can be highly inefficient for some routes
right now, my way to work is 20 min by bicycle, door-to-door. By bus, it would be almost an hour.

my commute is an hour door to door
joy

@ElendilTheTall I know :( that's what I'm going to avoid in my life as long as possible
of course, it's only easy to avoid in a single-person household

yes indeed

My longest daily commute was for was 28 miles (45 km) for one year, about 12 years ago.
@FaheemMitha Of course you're right. I should not have used "normal" that way.
Crap it's 3 AM. I'm doing it again, I'm totally wired.

11:16 AM
You're so old fashioned
You'll be sending a fax next

'wired'
There are some things I wish we still had capital punishment for, viz.
Putting tomato in a store bought cajun chicken wrap
Or indeed any wrap, sandwich or other foodstuff
There you are enjoying a healthy, tasty wrap, and bam. A rondel of sour slime. Ugh.

meaning totally wide awake, bouncing off the walls.

What next, avocado?
I know you putz, it was a (bad) pun!

I'm not entirely sure but I think I'm right at about 72 hours.

11:22 AM
@Jolenealaska !!!

I know I didn't even lie down last night.

I haven't had that even in my worst times
not the "didn't lie down last night" part, the "haven't slept in 72 hours" part

The night before that I think I tried for like an hour and then gave up.

If you think it's due to medications, maybe they can adjust them?

Shit, last month I went five days straight.

11:25 AM
even if you're feeling fine, the long term results are bad

It gets worse with every hour.

What could possibly be so stimulating as to keep you up that long?
(as the actress said to the bishop)

@ElendilTheTall Apparently you read Leslie Charteris too. Or did.

Tall, was I here at all during your workday on Tuesday? Do you remember?

11:30 AM
Nope, the phrase has passed into common parlance.
Um, let me think
Tuesday? Yesterday?

Your Tuesday day, my Monday night...

Yes, you were here all day iirc

so I slept Sunday night, your Monday day, right?

Maybe... You could always check the transcript...

I was just trying to.
Sunday night was the night I first watched Heat.
So Saturday night, the 4th into the 5th was when I slept
it is now night of the 7th/morning of the 8th.

11:48 AM
@Jolenealaska are you aware that sleep deprivation kills earlier than food deprivation does?
I'm worried about you, you are probably close to overt cognitive symptoms. The metabolic ones have probably kicked in already, although you're not likely to notice them.

Cognitive symptoms are obvious, I can't figure out how many nights that is.

The first cognitive symptoms are diminished concentration, and other ones similar to alcohol drinking. There is a surprisingly low sleep debt (I think 2 hours per night sustained for 4-5 nights) which produces impairment comparable to 0.5 promil abv
but later on, you get into hallucinations and really weird stuff

I don't really care whether I sleep at night or during the day, but it has to be one of those

also, lack of sleep makes people fat. Well, it makes rats fat, there aren't many full sleep deprivation studies on humans.
basically, a sleepless mammal cannot cover its muscles' energy needs (it's not known why)
so the body tries to compensate by increasing food intake
it goes well for the first few days of complete sleep deprivation, or a long time under partial sleep deprivation, with the side effect of obesity over the long term
after several days, the body cannot produce enough energy to keep up body temperature no matter how much it is fed

I want badly to sleep.

11:57 AM
@Jolenealaska and your head cannot turn off? That's a very bad situation to be in :(
I hate taking medications, but if I were at a point as serious as yours, I'd probably try a sleeping pill

Yeah I know.
I have.

@Jolenealaska oh :(

@rumtscho I get impaired faster than that. A couple of nights at maybe 4 hrs a night, and I would probably fall asleep standing up. Not that it happens in practice, of course.

is there something else you can do which you haven't tried? Leave out a medication which acts as a stimulant? Perfect sleep conditions? Meditation to cope with the anxiety and frustration of the "this isn't going to work" intrusive thoughts?

There is one drug called Tizanadine that works when it gets this bad.

12:01 PM
I wish there was something I could do to help you
If your sleeping situation is so serious, you have probably heard all of the existing tactics though :(
I also see that I have to run to get in time to a lecture

Is the closest thing I have seen to a stimulant is the coffee I had... a day and a half ago?

I cross my fingers for your next try to fall asleep
see you later - or even better not, because you may be sweetly curled up and dreaming by then

shutting down the computer would probably help
not only do we keep on poking you with our thrilling conversation, but the light will keep fucking with your circadian rhythms.

yesterday, by Jolenealaska
Coffee tastes much better held for a long time in a crockpot than held for the same length of time in a cheap old Mr. Coffee.
That was the only coffee I have had recently, 2 cups....Ok, here I go

Do something non-electronic for a while

12:09 PM
hopefully you won't see me again for at least 6 hours.

I wouldn't try and go to sleep straight away
now go on, shoo

ok, i'll read for a while..
cya

don't read on your phone!
or anything back-lit

no, I have a boring legal document to read.

perfect
sleep tight x

Jay
12:44 PM
