3:20 AM
AARRGGHH I want to CHEAT, but I can't get any of the hacks to work.

3 hours later…
6:44 AM
@ElendilTheTall Hah, and it seems we can't both be here at once...

The hats are gone; life returns to normal!

They're not gone yet! Not until I refresh!

OOOOH NOOO! No more hats? But I am having a bad hair day!

Yeah. Hats ended at midnight UTC.

Yeh, well, I hadn't noticed. I've been dealing with zombies.

6:57 AM
I thought it was that damned talking skull.

The damn talking skull is a bit annoying.
I'm wondering if there is a good reason other than the possibility of really creepy sex to ignore his rule that I shouldn't hit female zombies.
It really does bug me that I can't seem to hack my saved games.

Why are you determined to.... have alternate rules... when you haven't even played it the regular way yet?

I want to be be smart and strong

Sometimes you have to settle for pretty

That doesn't seem to help in this game one bit.
I tried the classic hair toss at the dying dude at the big book. He didn't even notice. Bah!
Of course it probably doesn't help that I'm an apparently repeatedly dead dude and my best friend is a skull.
Ok back to zombie land...CYA!

2 hours later…
8:48 AM
kickstarter.com/projects/seattlefoodgeek/… ... apparently, I should have my circulator soon-ish.

9:02 AM
@derobert I saw that last night! woohoo!
@Jolenealaska If I'd known this was my chance, I wouldn't have spent the last two days shuttling around southern CA

9:42 AM
@sourd'oh Bah! I'm in a weird ST:TNG retrospective and am playing an old RPG computer game. Step up to the plate! :) Or I will tease you mercilessly.

10:01 AM
:-)

10:52 AM
I spent the last two days darting around between bakeries and bakery equipment suppliers in Southern California. Sheeesh...

But did you do it at Warp speed?
With a sarcastic skull? Hmm?

2 hours later…
1:06 PM
@Jolenealaska Sarcastic skull?

@sourd'oh she's referring to a character from the game she's playing, Planescape: Torment
obviously...
;)

    Morning, folks.

1:24 PM
@ElendilTheTall Ahh, I should have known. If it's not pre-Advanced D&D, Call of Cthulhu, or Shadowrun, I know nothing of it.
morning SAJ

1:57 PM
Wha?!? Surely you @sourd'oh understand how warp drive and silly floating skulls intertwine?!?? Bah...

2:07 PM

2:56 PM
smatass

@Jolenealaska And yet you continually return.
@Cerberus We see you Cerby. ARe you quite sober today? :-) :-)

Hello.
And yes.

Well, perhaps that immoderate state will be only temporary.

Being sober is immoderate?

Only for you :-)
I had leftover spaghetti and meatballs for breakfast. No traditions were honored this morning.
And hot chocolate.

3:15 PM
I really don't drink that much, you know.
That's a nice breakfast.

I was out of parmesan or it would have been better.
@Cerberus I tease you because you like to come to the chat and tell us you are tipsy.

Heh.
It's also to tease David...

Ah I refrained from telling him I couldn't see any difference in credulity of the krishna doctrines and his own. I was very good.

Refraining from religious debate is always good.

I haven't argued with theists since my 20s.
What is a typical breakfast in amsterdam?

3:27 PM
French.
So pretty boring.

What, a croissant and a cup of coffee?

Coffee/tea, milk, orange juice, some kind of bread/croissant, jam, boiled egg.
Yes, basically.

Do n't tell anyone but I usually heat a can of soup or something.
At least on week days.

And why not?

The mightly cook heats canned soup....

3:29 PM
As long as the soup is good. Canned is often yucky...

I know the one or two brands which reach as high as "not too bad."
I like leftovers for breakfast.

I'd like to have dinner all day!

Sometiems I make eggs and sausage for dinner!

And why not?

Indeed. And hashbrowns, which are a favorite. Then again, I have a weekness for potatoes.

3:31 PM
I have a weakness for food, did I tell you that?

I inferred it, if you hadn't mentioend it.
Then again, all of us who are regulars here are... regulars here!

Indeed!
I did go to bed hungry yesterday, so I'm proud of myself.

Why deny yourself dinner?

I need to starve myself of 21,000 kilocalories in order to lose fat.
I did have a meagre dinner.

Per?

3:34 PM
(Alas, 1 kg of fat equals 7,000 kcal.)
@SAJ14SAJ In total.

7 lbs? That is not so bad.

Yeah it's not so bad.

Moratorium on lemon tarts, then.

Heh.
December is behind us, but January is also full of occasions where one can eat and drink a lot...
Tomorrow, we're baking a cake or cookies.
There will be booze.

Imagine!

3:40 PM
Tonight, dinner and a movie.

Sounds like a date?

Nope.
With friends.
I should be getting dressed...

have fun

I wish I had spaghetti with meatballs!
I only ate a left-over pastry from NYE.

NYE?

3:44 PM
New Year's Eve.

Ah.... i don't think of pastry as party food.

I'm not sure what you would call it.

Oilleyballen?

It is croissant dough with cinnamon and sugar, and apple inside. Pretty good.

Sounds interesting.
Kind of like a turnover.

3:45 PM
Nope, oliebollen are like very airy bread that's deep-fried, with raisins and sugar.
@SAJ14SAJ Yes, they are sometimes even called that, appelflap.
I'm sure you can devise the meaning of appelflap.

I think traditionally turnovers would be made with puff pastry rather than croissant, but I can see that it would work either way.

Maybe it is puff pastry.
I actually don't know the difference.

Yeast.

Ah.
Actually, I think they may be deep-friend too, before the sugar is added.

Sure you can deep fry a turnover.
They look tasty.
And obviously calorie free.

4:08 PM
@SAJ14SAJ Almost calorie-free!
Maybe 3 calories?
Now I must away.
I bid thee farewell.

Man, now I need an apple turnover
Crisp, sweet, flaky pastry. Cold whipped cream. Tart apples. Mmm.

4:58 PM
Oh, that sounds good.

2 hours later…
6:56 PM
well, evidently you all failed to receive my psychic summons for dinner. Now I have a dozen of these to get through

Hehe, good luck with that.

I jest of course
I only have half a dozen

How were you expecting me to help? You want me to eat three?

Have as many as you like

Maybe I won't like any of them.

7:07 PM
though SAJ may take exception if you eat his

Then you'd better tell me which one is his, so that I don't make a mistake.

the biggest one, natch

So when I come to your house, I should bring a tape measure?

If you care that much

No, I think I will just live with annoying Saj.

7:10 PM
fair enough

@ElendilTheTall I think perhaps that pizza is haram
But it is beautiful

It's hard to tell by looking at it.

Its pepperoni, almost always made from pork

I mean, whether it's haram, not whether it's beautiful. Looking at it is probably the best way to tell whether it's beautiful.

ah well
my pizzas don't take into account irrational dislike for the noble pig

7:12 PM
I couldn't quite tell from the photo whether the six large reddish circles were pepperoni or tomato.

who in their right mind would put fresh tomatoes on a pizza?
who in their right mind would put fresh tomatoes on anything?
foul things

@ElendilTheTall Its a thing here, in the fancy places sometimes. Sliced very thinly. I don't approve.

I sometimes use tomatoes, but for some reason, they retain heat much more than the rest of the pizza, so I sometimes burn my palate on them.

Are you straying from the stromboli path, @ElendilTheTall?

@SAJ14SAJ variety is the spice of life

7:15 PM
Not coriander?

Chili and oregano and garlic are among the spices of life.

and it was a nice change to get some nice well browned crust for a change
stromboli tends to be doughier
oregano is a herb
garlic is an allium

The metaphorical category is broad enough to accept them.

you broad-spicers make me sick
the main reason I started making strombolis was that the oven at our old place didn't get hot enough to do pizzas very well

I'm a broad spicer, cat petter, code writer...

7:20 PM
the new one does a pretty good job, so pizzas it is

I have a calzone for later.

do you ever cook anything fresh?
you're always reheating!

I rarely cook anything right now... hopefully that will change in a few weeks.

what happens then?

New apartment, new kitchen, unpack kitchen toys.

7:22 PM
ooo
what's prompted the move?

Bad times, not going to talk about.

sorry to hear that

Life goes on.

I hope the move helps
a change is as good as a rest, or so They say
packing the kitchen is a royal PITA

7:31 PM
PITA is an initialism in this case

No, really?

honest injun ;)

@ElendilTheTall Nobody says that :-)

I just did
but then I am a total badass

Well, stop.... its too 1940s
You are very badass with a camera and a dough-based object, yes.

7:41 PM
"Gee willickers mister, can I see your color tv? Is that a 4 inch screen? Jeepers!"

Color TV was invented in the late 40s but not reasonably available until the late 50s, and not cmmon enough to be important until the 60s
IIRC

hence "Gee willickers!"

@SAJ14SAJ I didn't know you were that old.

@DavidWallace I am not, but I can read.
That is for Lindy, since he likes the 1940s now.

7:46 PM
I think this room just became haram.

Wow

dear me

That was not a reaction I anticipated.

I don't know precisely what haram is (though I can guess), but if it means one can't look at an attractive, more or less clothed adult of the opposite sex, I don't agree with it

@ElendilTheTall Forbidden

7:50 PM
Hey @Cerberus

so I gathered

So it means to them the same as treif for Jews, as well as being the name for the famous harem, since the women were forbidden.
Also, with connotations of dirty.
Cerby was here earlier, but was going out tonight

@SAJ14SAJ The icons under the room name lied to me
:D

@NeilFein Mendacious icons are not contraindicated at SE

God damn cache

8:04 PM
it's just the way it works
all recent chatters are shown
he was here 4 hours ago
@SAJ14SAJ who in their right mind would forbid Isla Fisher?

@ElendilTheTall Evidently, either that is answered, or the individual does not meet the qualification specified

quite
I despair for the world, I really do

Although googling that name indicates she was born about 50 years too late to be a real pinup girl

indeed
that was from a Vanity Fair shoot with several modern ladies photographed in a pinup style

I see...
that explains why the picture did not look quite period correct.

8:15 PM
indeed
here's a thought for the day: the longest journey starts with a single step. And a fear you've left the heating on.

My cats were indifferent to your kitchen table philosophy. They want to know where the next can of Friskies is coming from.

Pester, and ye shall receive, O felines

Friskies is a morning treat.
So there is no begging, as there are no inappropriate rewards.

So what's on the cards today @SAJ14SAJ
it's what, half three there?

About... I am thinking of heating up my calzone.

8:30 PM
at half three?
is that lunch or dinner?

I tend to eat only twice a day if I don't go to the office.

I would faint

You get a 'tea' as well, no?

no
breakfast, lunch, dinner
some people call dinner tea
but it's not a common extra meal

But you have to eat those little sandwiches with no crust!

8:35 PM
sorry to shatter your illusions

I don't think you are really English now; tea is the very soul of being English. Everyone knows that.

tea the drink

Which is consumed... at tea! QED

which is consumed throughout the day
now, it may be that you might sit down and have a cup of tea and a slice of cake of a Sunday afternoon
and you could possibly call that Afternoon Tea
but it's by no means a regular or common occurrence
nowadays if you want a 'proper' Afternoon Tea you need to at least go to a certain type of cafe, or a posh hotel

So England is no more, and all that is left is the corpse in the eU? :-)

8:39 PM
Also if you're in Devon or Cornwall on holiday you might have Cream Tea or two - tea, with fruit scones, jam, and clotted cream

I have never clotted a cream. I don't like sour cream, creme fraiche, or any of that nonsense.

clotted cream is not sour
it is just extremely thick cream
in fact, I think by American standards it is technically butter
it's utterly fucking delicious

Interesting; that is not a product we get here.

so I understand
though I do have an American pie book that mentions it
make your own! get some raw milk, and simmer it on an extremely low heat in a wide pan overnight

It is extremely difficult to come by raw milk here. It cannot legally be sold in most channels.

8:48 PM
imagine - a rich, buttery scone, packed with succulent fruit, thick, cool, clotted cream - the very definition of creaminess - and a sweet, sharp, raspberry jam on top
mmmmmm mm!
@SAJ14SAJ in that case I will send you a case
as it were

Not until I move

no one should go through life without clotted cream
@SAJ14SAJ too late!
ordered and shipped

I think you can buy it in jars.

one metric tonne of clotted cream

From posh overseas sources.

8:50 PM
or Amazon
$5.50
that's extortionate, but no more than £1.50 for a tiny pack of peanut butter M&Ms
revenge is sweet

Are the jarred products even worth trying?

no idea
it's only sold fresh here
good reviews

Ca ne fait rien

your funeral ;)
another thing to put on the list of things you need to try when you visit this sceptr'd isle

I hate travelling, Lindy. I will never see anything farther than a days' train ride.

8:57 PM
well, that's a sad state of affairs

In practice that means as far north as Boston.

alright, another thing to put on the list of things to bring you when you pay for my flight to the States ;)

I would worry it was infused with cilantro :-)

I wouldn't be so cruel

Good to know.
How were your experiments with 'merican style barbacue?

8:59 PM
how could you appreciate the delights of black pudding or haggis if it was tainted with coriander?
@SAJ14SAJ I never got the smoker

I won't be trying either of those, until you gobble down some scrapple and boudin sausage.

didn't have the cash after the move

The weber type grill is not terribly expensive, and I still maintain it is your best option.

it's on my list of things to get

:-)

9:01 PM
even a weber grill is out of my price range at the moment

Even with the fancy new job?

the fancy new full time job requiring little the tall to go into childcare full time
£700 a month
about $1150

That sounds like a lot of money.

> about $1150

I hope the job pays more than that

9:03 PM
it does, but that plus the mortgage and all the other bills doesn't leave much for luxuries

I understand.

anything more than about $15 I have to think about
right, I'm going to watch Sherlock
catch you on the flipside

Have fun
