Idk if it’s my particular fridge/freezer combo or what, but the estimated time to thaw frozen turkeys does not seem to work well for me. 1 day for every 4-5 lbs (1.8-2.3 kg). However I have a 7 kg bird which should be at most 3.5 days by that metric which still feels icy almost 4 days later
@Tinkeringbell fridge reads about 34°F with an IR thermometer which is on the low end but within the “correct” range form what I can see. And I haven’t had issues w/ stuff freezing on me when it shouldn’t
According to a Dutch source (Voedingscentrum, freely translated: nutrition/sustenance center), only like 1 in five fridges in the Netherlands has the right temperature, most are higher.
But I guess I have to make my own rule of thumb, because the “standard” definitely isn’t working. I guess I could just raise the fridge temp but honestly I’d like to keep it as low as possible without causing food quality issues like freezing
I mostly only drink milk (in terms of beverages from the fridge), and I find that the amount that it warms up when you pour it into a drinking glass is just about perfect
But if you pour a second serving in the same glass (or put the glass in the fridge) it’s definitely too cold
I definitely checked the temp one time, but I’ll do it again - I’m curious how much of a temperature difference the first and second pour actually are
I usually have water (plain or with syrup/fruit/leftover fruit/herbs) in there, as I find straight from the tap "too hot". And orange juice, milk (but that gets microwaved to make gruel for breakfast XD), and yoghurt drink. And on weekends, soda.
Maybe I can put the fridge colder and just heat up a glass/cup with some warm water first :P
I do find the tap water temp variance over time as the seasons change to be kinda interesting. You kinda get a look at the temperature of the subsurface rather than just the air
Yeah, same here! It's really noticable, especially in hot summers. I can almost shower in it then, no such thing happening in winter no matter how much of a sweat I work up first XD
@fyrepenguin Eh, I've also had dairy and sandwich stuff way past its "best before" date still being fine, even in opened packaging.
Chicken breast usually doesn't make it more than 2 days past that though, so I'm vigilant about freezing most meat I don't use within a day or two after buying.
